Those calling for restructuring are opportunists - Governor El-Rufai

Author: Nnenna Ibeh

- The Kaduna state governor has said that all those calling for restructuring of Nigeria are opportunists

- Nasir El-Rufai said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has done more restructuring in the country

- He also said those agitating for restructuring are irresponsible

The governor of Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai has said that those calling for the restructuring of Nigeria are political opportunists and irresponsible.

While speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, El-Rufai said the President Muhammadu Buhari's administration in two years have done better than the past administration.

He said the Buhari-led administration has taken some practical steps towards restructuring the country through various means

El-Rufai said governors of all the 36 states in Nigeria are currently more involved in policy making at the national level in the present administration.

The governor also said that before now, issues at the federal level were been hidden from state governor but the Buhari-led administration has made transparency one of its key mandate.

“We meet every month under the auspice of the National Economic Council and working together with the Federal Government we chart directions of economic policy and that is part of shifting the federal-state balance.

Nasir El-Rufai said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has done more restructuring the country

“A lot of the talk about political restructuring is political opportunism and irresponsibility in my opinion

“It is popular and people that have presidential aspirations think there is a platform upon which they will exploit this. As I said, if you look at the APC manifesto, all the elements to divulge power to the state to change the balance in the federation are there and we are committed to that as a party.

“The National Chairman of our party will restate that commitment and we are discussing it and as I said President Buhari and Osinbajo’s government has taken very concrete steps rather than rhetoric to actually move in that direction and we are going to move in that direction but we do not believe that the basis for it is rhetoric and opportunism, we do not believe that the 2014 CONFAB report is a sensible basis to even begin.

“We all know the circumstances in which the so-called CONFAB was put together, we all know the composition, how lopsided it was, how important stakeholders were not taken to account, how even the composition and numbers do not reflect the demographics and the diversity of this country and we took a position as a party not to participate but to encourage our state governors to be there at the table.”

KIDNAP DAY 36: Parents, others contribute N285,000 towards ransom balance LAGOS SCHOOL KIDNAP DAY 36:

Parents, others contribute N285,000 towards ransom balance

By Evelyn Usman

Apparently disturbed by the delay in the release of the six abducted students of Lagos Model College, Igbonla, Epe, some parents have contributed their widow’s mite to shore-up the ransom of N10 million already paid.

At press time yesterday, Vanguard gathered that only N285,000 had so far been contributed. It was gathered that the parents contributed a minimum of N2,000, while few of them did not contribute a dime, as they gave the present economic situation as excuse.

The course, as gathered, was championed by a Junior Secondary School 2 parent. Vanguard learned that the suggestion initially came up in the third week of the students detention. But some of the parents reportedly kicked against the idea, saying the state government should rise up to the challenge as it did the first.

However, they eventfully succumbed last week, after it became apparent that all expected avenues had closed. One of the parents, who simply gave his name as Bosun, confirmed the ongoing contribution to Vanguard. He said: “The person collecting the money said N285,000 had so far been contributed. As at yesterday, there was no additional contribution. Some parents that would have gladly contributed had withdrawn their children from the school.

“We were moved by pity when we learned that one of the affected parents sold his car to raise money for the release of his son. “Some even sold their landed properties to make up the N10 million that was paid. Is that amount not enough to release the students? “By today (yesterday), they would have spent 36 days with their captors. Only God knows what they are feeding them with and the condition they have been subjected to.

“We heard that one of them fell sick at a time and was taken out of the creeks. Who knows if same fate had befallen others. Those students are going through hell, no doubt. “I do not know what I would have done if my son was one of them. I will withdraw my two children after their third term examination.”

Adamawa APC nominates Babachir’s replacement

ByChijioke Jannah on June 29, 2017

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State has nominated Mustapha Salihu as Babachir David Lawal’s replacement in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

Babachir’s position as the Party’s National Vice Chairman (North-East) has remained vacant since August 2015 following his appointment as Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF) by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a letter addressed to the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the Adamawa chapter of the APC forwarded Salihu’s name for the position of National Vice Chairman (North East) of the Party pending ratification by a convention.

The letter was co-signed by the governor of Adamawa state, Bindow Jibrilla, the state chairman of the party, Ibrahim Bilal, and the APC secretary in the state, Sa’idu Naira.

Adamawa APC nominates Babachir’s replacement

The letter partly reads: “Your Excellency, the party Exco, the working committee has met with His Excellency Executive Governor of our State (Adamawa), in line with Article 17 (iv) of the party constitution as amended, we hereby nominate Alhaji Mustapha Salihu as Engr. Babachir David Lawal’s replacement as National Vice Chairman North East zone pending ratification at the mini convention.

“Our careful research and ananlysis revealed that Comrade Mustapha Salihu has tremendously supported and contributed to APC in this zone, hence his nomination”.

The decision of the Adamawa APC has also been endorsed by leadership of the party in the remaining five states in the zone, namely Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe and Taraba.
