Politics / Herdsmen Did Not Kill Daughter Of Afenifere Leader – Buhari Condoles Fasoranti by Limitednow: 10:59pm On Jul 12, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the the killing of Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Reuben Fasoranti, a leader of Afenifere, a socio-cultural group in the South-West region.

Mrs Olakunrin was reportedly killed by herdsmen on Friday evening but Mr Buhari has dismissed the crime as having been committed by herders who are recently accused as arrowheads of insecurity in the country.

In condoling Mr Fasoranti, the Nigerian leader said those who killed the lady are said to be armed robbers, according to Ondo state Police command.

“President Muhammadu Buhari condoles with Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, whose daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin was killed along Ondo-Ore road by those described as armed robbers by Ondo Police Command. He prays God to give Pa Fasoranti fortitude to bear the loss,” Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, said in a statement on Friday evening.

Politics / Election Tribunal: How Aides, Lawyers Scammed Atiku – Lauretta Onochie by Limitednow: 9:59pm On Jul 12, 2019
Developments at the 2019 presidential election tribunal indicates that Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been scammed, an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari has said.

Mr Abubakar, a former vice president, was the major challenger to Mr Buhari who sought re-election on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

Popularly known as Atiku, the opposition candidate is at the election tribunal praying he be declared winner of the February 23 exercise wherein the president was declared re-elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The petitioner and his party are claiming to have won the election based on results allegedly obtained from the servers of the electoral body, despite the commission’s claim of not possessing any computer database, let alone transmitting results electronically during the general election.

While some of the petitioners’ witnesses who claimed to have served as officials of INEC during the election said they transmitted results of the exercise electronically, others could not give the correct date when the election held.

A cross section of the witnesses, testifying against Buhari, APC and INEC who are respondents to the petition, said they were seeing statements allegedly from them for the first time at the tribunal.

While Atiku and the PDP has upto July 17 to prove their case, some of their witnesses from Zamfara State journeying their way to the tribunal sitting in Abuja were reportedly attacked by unknown gunmen.

For Lauretta Onochie, the president’s media aide, aforementioned events so far suggest that aides and legal counsels of the PDP candidate are hell bent on swindling funds out of their client.

“Some of @atiku’s witnesses were “attacked” in Zamfara on their way to the Election Tribunal. Some witnesses can’t remember d date of d presidential election. Others saw their statements for the 1st time in court.Atiku allowed himself to be scammed by opportunistic aides & lawyers,” Ms Onochie who just turned 60 said in a tweet on Friday evening.

The presidential aide who accused the former vice president of shopping for terrorists in a foreign land to make the nation ungovernable for her principal, will be on the defensive side to shake off the N2.5billion filed against her after refusing to publicly apologize and pay N500million as damages.

Politics / Ahmad Lawan: Buhari Will Be Challenged Under Me – Senate President Vows by Limitednow: 4:52pm On Jul 12, 2019
Ahmed Lawan, President of the 9th Senate has vowed that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will be challenged to proof the legislature under him is not a rubber stamp as insinuated in some quarters.

Mr Lawan stated this on Friday while addressing Women Parliamentarians, led by Joy Emordi, a former federal lawmaker.

Critics of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) are quick to refer to the top lawmaker as a rubber stamp of the executive led by President Muhammadu Buhari, considering the circumstances that led to his emergence as the leader of the legislative arm of government.

Mr Buhari and his party had explored all available means at its disposal to ensure Mr Lawan succeeded the immediate past President of the 8th Senate, Bukola Saraki,

Although the top lawmaker was tipped for the position during the formation of the 8th Senate in 2015, Mr Saraki thwarted the plan, despite belonging to the ruling party, by forming alliance with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to produce the past legislature.

As the formation of the 9th Senate drew near, Buhari played a vital role in ensuring the preferred candidate of his party clinched the position. Another lawmaker who was interested in succeeding Saraki traded his ambition for the withdrawal of corruption charges against him on the orders of the president who claims the fight against corruption knows no political inclination.

Addressing his visitors, the Senate President said he will never be a rubber stamp of the president.

“Yes, I believe in President Buhari as a person and I believe in my party, the APC, but I believe that our problems as Nigerians are Nigerian problems. They are neither APC nor PDP problems, they are Nigerian problems that require Nigerian solution. So, we have to work together,” Mr Lawan was quoted by his media aide, Mohammed Isa, to have told his guests during their visit.

“We will be there for the executive arm of government all the time in moving this country forward. We are going to challenge the executive in a manner that is decent but decisive. As a minister, you have to do your ministerial job well.

“We will make government appointees to do what is required of them. We have to deal with the issues confronting us. It is not going to be easy, but we have to build a relationship that have mutual respect, collaboration and partnership. It is achievable,” a statement Mr Isa added.

Politics / Strangers Were My Ministers During My First Term – Buhari by Limitednow: 5:35am On Jul 12, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has said most of the ministers he appointed when he was first elected president in 2015 are strangers.

Mr Buhari who took almost six months to appoint the strangers into different ministries had at the time told Nigerians that he took his time to carefully appoint those he described as to have merited the appointment.

The president who was first sworn-in on May 29, 2015 also said his intention to restructure Federal Government ministries accounted for why he did not send names of ministerial nominees to the Nigerian Senate until September 30, of that same year.

He has at different occasions praised his cabinet members as effectively discharging their duties well despite allegation of incompetence levelled against most of them by critics of the administration.

Mr Buhari who was sworn-in for a second term four years after, is yet to name those who will help him pilot the affairs of the nation for another term of four years.

After President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, who predicted that ministerial list of the president will arrive the lawmaking arm before the week runs out, led the leadership of the National Assembly to visit the president, the Nigerian leader has said he is under pressure to unveil his ministers.

He also said those who worked with him during his first term are strangers whom he does not know but were recommended to him by his party, the ruling All Progressive Congress, (APC).

“I am very much aware about it and I am under tremendous pressure on it,” Mr Buhari told State House Correspondents after the gathering Thursday night

“The last cabinet which I had, most of them, a majority of them I didn’t know.

“I had to accept their names and recommendation from the party. I worked with them for three and a half years,” he added.

TODAY POLITICS could not independently verify if the president handed over the list to the leadership of the National Assembly. A senator had said should the president fail to send in his ministerial nominees on time, he will have to wait until the legislative arm resumes in September after their two months recess expected to start in two weeks time.

He also opined that this might shatter the plans of both the legislature and the executive to return to the January to December budget cycle.

Politics / Stop Igbo Governors From Driving Away Fulani Herdsmen – Northern Groups Tell PMB by Limitednow: 9:45pm On Jul 11, 2019
The coalition of Northern groups has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop state governors from the South-East region over their recent decision said to be against herdsmen in the region.

The recent decision of the state governors to restrict the movement of cows into the region by foot is one of the measures faulted by the Northern groups whose 30-day ultimatum, for the implementation of Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) nationwide, is yet to expire.

In a statement signed by its spokesman, Mr Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in Abuja on Thursday, the group urged the federal government to urgently halt the forceful ejection of pastoralists in Southern part of the country.

Mr Suleiman said the decision of the governors is currently building tension among citizens of Fulani extraction.

“We are not impressed by the patronizing and insulting attempt to divide Fulani people and Nigerians by leaders who do not appear to understand the implications of their decisions,” the group said.

“We ask here whether other Nigerians should now arrogate to themselves powers to decide which chemists in the North sell drugs or which business men are making money manufacturing spare parts in the North.

“Should Northern Governors assume responsibility for expelling persons from particular ethnic groups that are clearly involved in criminal activities, or designing difficult and impossible conditions for others from these groups which will make it impossible for them to operate? they queried.

The group urged security agencies to urgently check the escalation of hate-inducing comments by some Southern based political, cultural and religious leaders aiming at endangering the Fulani people rendering them object of indiscriminate attacks.

Politics / Continue Praising Buhari – Onochie To Fayose by Limitednow: 10:25pm On Jun 14, 2019
Following his commendation to President Muhammadu Buhari for making June 12 the new day in the country, Ayodele Fayose, former Ekiti State governor, has been told to continue praising the president.

Democracy day previously celebrated on May 29 was shifted to June 12 on the proposal of Mr Buhari to commemorate MKO Abiola, presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election.

Mr Abiola had the election that produced him as winner annulled by the military led by former military leader, Ibrahim Babangida.

The president, during the celebration on Wednesday which was not attended by past leaders, renamed the national stadium to reflect the name of the presumed election winner.

Previous administrations who attempted to immortalize Abiola failed to do so. The attempt of former president, Goodluck Jonathan, to rename a tertiary institution after him met brick walls.

Reacting to the development, the former governor commending Buhari and slammed former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, for failing to honour the late Abiola.

Mr Fayose has been urged by a presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie, to continue praising the president whom the former governor has been attacking during his reign as Ekiti governor.

“Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has commended Pres. @MBuhari for honouring Abiola who was the winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election that was annulled by then military Head of State, Gen Babangida,” Ms Onochie tweeted Friday evening.

“Me: This is a good development.
Keep it up, #PeterTheRock,” she added.

Mr Fayose is not the only opposition figure to have commended the president for rescheduling the democracy day. A former Aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, had towed same line as the former governor.

The duo are facing corruption trials instituted against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Meanwhile, properties traced to the former governor and sealed by the EFCC has been unsealed.

Politics / Presidency Speaks On Alleged ‘non-existence’ INEC Server by Limitednow: 9:44pm On Jun 14, 2019
The presidency has reacted to the controversial alleged non-existence of electronic server of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The issue of electronic server was first brought to the front burner by the commission which vowed to use it in transmitting election results electronically.

However, after the outcome of the election which is being challenged at the presidential election tribunal, the electoral body claimed not to have transmitted election results to any server but collated it manually.

On Thursday, while responding to the request of the opposition party seeking access to peruse its server, the commission said it does not have a server.

The latest position of INEC has triggered reactions from Nigerians and an aide of the former vice president.

Speaking on Friday, the presidency said the onus is on Atiku to prove that the commission has electronic server it used in transmitting results during the general election.

Politics / Aisha Buhari: Call Me 'First Lady' Not 'Wife Of The President' by Limitednow: 7:06am On Jun 14, 2019
Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has said she should henceforth be addressed as the first lady.

Mrs Buhari’s wish is against that of her husband who said his wife should be addressed as wife of the president.

The president when he sought for the office in 2015 had promised to abolish the first lady’s office because it is unknown to the Nigerian Constitution. He is yet to do so even as at press time.

His wife has continued to occupy the office which is perceived to have held enormous powers during previous administrations.

Mrs Buhari making amends to how she should be henceforth addressed on Thursday disclosed her new official title at the presentation of awards to the former and current wives of Governors of the 36 states.

“When my husband was newly elected, I personally chose to be called the wife of the President,” she said at the event which took place at presidential villa, Abuja.

“But, I realised that it causes confusion from the state as to whether the wives of state governors are to be addressed as the first ladies or wives of the governors.

“So, forgive me for confusing you from the beginning, but now I chose to be called the first lady,” she added.

Politics / See How Nigerians Reacted As INEC Denies Owning Electronic Server For Elections by Limitednow: 5:40am On Jun 14, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied it owns an electronic server used in conducting election.

INEC made the claim on Thursday while responding to the election petition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate for the election, Atiku Abubakar.

Mr Abubakar and his party are challenging the outcome of the February 23 exercise wherein President Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected for a second term in office.

The opposition candidate who is at the presidential election tribunal is claiming to have won the election based on results allegedly obtained from the electronic servers of the electoral commission.

Initially, INEC responded to the former vice president’s allegation that despite owning an electronic server, the commission did not use it for the this year’s general election.

At the hearing of the petition on Thursday, the petitioners asked for permission to inspect the server of the commission but opposing the demand, legal representatives of INEC at the tribunal claimed the their client does not own an electronic server.

"They are asking us to bring something we do not have,” INEC through its counsel, Yunus Usman, in a counter affidavit asked the court to dismiss the application.

The response of the commission to the application has since generated reactions from Nigerians.

POLITICS TIMES gathered some of the reactions for your perusal. They are reproduced below.

Politics / Why OBJ, Jonathan, Other Former Leaders Boycotted May 29, June 12 – Shehu Sani by Limitednow: 1:27pm On Jun 13, 2019
Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker from Kaduna State, has revealed why former leaders in the country recently boycotted state functions.

Former leaders in the country often grace important state functions in the country especially May 29 celebrated as democracy day.

The aforementioned date for the celebration was recently changed to June 12 by President Muhammadu Buhari following his proposal to the National Assembly which endorsed it to commemorate late MKO Abiola, presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election which was annulled by the military at the time.

On May 29, Mr Buhari took the oath of office which ushered him into his second and final term as a democratic president. The occasion although toned-down, was attended by a former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.

Past leaders who were absent at the oath-taking ceremony includes: former presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan; former military leaders, Abdulsalami Abubakar and Ibrahim Babangida.

But on Wednesday, June 12, both the past democratic and military leaders, including Mr Gowon who attended the president’s oath-taking ceremony, stayed away from the celebration.

POLITICS TIMES as at press time could not independently ascertain why the former leaders stayed away from the functions they ought to be present but the former lawmaker says the absence of the former leaders might signifies a bad omen.

He said the leaders decided to stayed away from the occasions because Mr Buhari during his days in the opposition do not attend similar events.

Politics / After Withdrawing From Senate Presidency Race, EFCC Hands-off From Goje’s Corrup by Limitednow: 4:00pm On Jun 07, 2019
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has washed its hands off the corruption trial of Danjuma Goje, lawmaker representing Gombe Central at the Senate.

The development is coming barely 24 hours after Mr Goje stepped down from the race of Senate President on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Buhari whose administration has vowed to rid the country of corrupt elements told the lawmaker to withdraw and endorse the candidacy of Ahmed Lawan.

Mr Lawan is the preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) for the top job at the legislative arm of government.

At the resumed hearing of the corruption trial of the Gombe lawmaker on Friday at a Federal High Court sitting in Jos, the state capital of Plateau, Wahab Shittu, the legal practitioner of the anti-graft agency notified of his intention to hand over the case.

Mr Shittu handed over to one Pius Asika, from the Ministry of Justice, according to Sahara Reporters.

The news medium reports that the president intends to suppress the corruption charges preferred against Goje, who is accusing of stealing N5 billion between September and November 2010, by having the Justice Ministry take over the case, stall it and ultimately quash it.

It said this formed the basis of discussion between messrs Goje and Buhari at the Thursday meeting brokered by Nasir El-rufai, Kaduna State governor.

Chris Uche and Paul Erokoro both Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) and counsels to Mr Goje were at the Friday’s court sitting where the handover was made by the anti-graft agency that has been handling the case for over 8 years now.

The case has been adjourned to June 21 when Asika is expected to make further submission.
