Olufemi Fani-Kayode, the former aviation minister, has addressed some certain issues which he indicated in his Open Letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, December 28.

Speaking on Channels TV morning show Sunrise Daily Fani-Kayode highlights the “Lies” of the present government after seven months in power, he also considers the most glaring flaws and inconsistencies that has characterise the current administration, while also pointing out the efforts the past administration made in the fight against insurgency in the last six weeks in power.

Read excerpt from the interview below:

“People are dying daily in this country and our government is given a commitment to do certain things but haven’t met those commitment. Instead of coming out to tell us the truth, they keep telling us lies and I think it’s appropriate for a true patriot and every good citizen to stand up and speak the truth.

“The president and our government came out to say that no arms were bought by the previous administration. This is a lie, it’s not true and if no arms were bought I wonder how the last administration could recover 22 local government areas in a space of a new month. Arms were bought and arms were used.

“They said the war against Boko Haram had been won and this is not true. The war hasn’t been won, people are been killed every day. They said the war had been won on December 23, but people were being killed on December 25 in Maiduguri, people were killed in Borno state on December 27 and people were killed in Adamawa state on December 28, and as I speak to you today, of the 22 local government recovered by the Jonathan’s administration, a number of them are back in the hands of Boko Haram today. It’s simply not true that the war against Boko Haram had been won. Instead of being consistent and clear in his assertions, what the president now did was to come out and say that arms were indeed bought but they were bought with cash without trying to understand why it was done that way.

“The time Jonathan was in power, there was an arm embargo on this country, we could not prosecute the war against Boko Haram because nobody was prepared to sell us arms. Therefore we had to purchase arms in black market and the only way to do that is by using cash, and the position of the previous government was that no matter what it takes, whether through arms, cheques, bank transfer, the important thing to do was to get arms for our army to prosecute the war against Boko Haram. They prosecuted the war effectively and by the time the election was held, Boko Haram had been eliminated in most parts of the country and could only be seen in the Sambisa forest.

“My letter isn’t a solidarity letter to the president but a wakeup call. Let me remind Nigerians that I was not a member of the previous administration, I was a spokesman of the campaign for the previous administration and I am proud of that. The government may claim they have sent Boko Haram terrorist packing in Sambisa forest but it’s not true.”

On if the arms were procured with cash, Fani-Kayode said: “You will have to put those questions to those who are of the business of buying arms, maybe the offices of the previous government. But what I know is that it was impossible for us to buy arms from anywhere in the world at that time because our hands were tied by our allies ironically including the government of the military of defence of the United Kingdom who the president recently hosted. As a consequence on the arms embargo, many our soldiers were dying.

“You can’t prosecute a war by propaganda, you say morale is high amongst the troops but this is not true, their morale is low, many of them are being killed without being celebrated. “Before this government came to power, Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic were supporting us in the war against Boko Haram but in this government, Chad that is critically aware of this fight against Boko Haram has pulled out of this alliance for reasons best known to them. That’s a cause of concern and things are not that rosy.

“I don’t derive pleasure in saying all this but I say this because I expect more from our president and I recognize the fact that he was a great war hero during the time we fought in Chad and he led the Soldiers to repel the Chadians coming into our country, he did so well in the early 80s and I wonder the same man unable to prosecute the war today.

“The command moving its office to Borno state makes no difference, you can’t determine the end of the war by where your command office is. Whether President Buhari moves his office from the villa to Maiduguri and the rule the country from there in the name of trying to fight Boko Haram, if that what it takes let him do it.”

Fani-Kayode’s remarks comes days after he carpeted President Muhammadu Buhari over the 2016 Budget which he (Buhari) presented to the National Assembly on Tuesday, December 22, 2015. The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is known for his outspoken nature on issues of national interest, took to the social media to express his dissatisfaction with the budgetary allocations.
