Nigeria as a nation has a very large debt burden. We also have hefty budget deficits that have been groowing for years, and oil revenue is going largely to settle debts. If not for subsidy removal, all our oil revenue would have gone to settle debts.

One word about subsidy removal,...it is not about politics. Simple and short. Once you get why it had to go, you would support subsidy remooval, while still rightly calling tinubu a bad leader.

Whoever takes over is still going to face massive debts, and a host of other issues. And if the government wants to be a good government, it would have to

1. Tax more of the gdp
2. Borrow for rail and pipeline projects
3. Remove subsides on power, and deregulate electricity, giving discos the right to set their prices.
4. Fight corruptuon at all levels.
5. Diversify the economy

If the government does not do these things, it is a bad government. If the government returns subsidy, it is worsening your debt for you and you go feel am after a few years of cheap prices.

I await the abuse.

Yes State policing will throw up initial teething and 'learning curve pain but there is no other viable alternative to it in terms of long term efficacy for any Nigerian who understands we must run our states and regions more autonomously because Nigerians are not one nor united and will never be.

On the contrary, I believe state policing could strengthen the rule of law in Nigeria. From a security standpoint, a single police force cannot claim exclusive authority over investigations, particularly for crimes that occur at the state level. With both federal and state police operating in the same space, they would either have to cooperate within the law or risk exposing each other’s misconduct. Crucially, they would answer to different employers with different political interests, creating a system of checks and balances.

For example, neither the federal police nor state police would be able to arbitrarily arrest motorists as they sometimes do today. In their early years, both forces would be competing for public acceptance and legitimacy, which would discourage blatant abuses and encourage more accountable policing.

APC’s internal politics are more deft than the opposition parties’ challenge to the ruling party.

For example, will state police turn a blind eye to the usual police roadblocks used for extortion? It’s either those extortions and corrupt practices stop, or the new guys set up their own roadblock system to run their own rackets. But I wonder how long that can last—especially since they’re natives and will be more accountable to the people around them.

There is a big difference between elections conducted to install public office holders and a regional referendum to leave a country. I agree political influence may easily affect electoral outcomes especially when public offices are involved but it is not that straightforward in the event of regional referendum because regional referendum most times occur based on the direct pressure of the people to leave the union so it's final outcome is predictable, making it almost impossible for politicians to rig it's outcome unlike general elections to install public office holders.......

I say the 1999 military constitution is fraudulent because it is a deceptive document, an illegitimate constitution, it was not formed by the people and does not truly represent the true position of the people because the people's consent was not sought during it's creation. It is simply a military document created to impose a forced union on the people.... Constitutions are legitimate only if they truly represent the people they govern. IMHO, representation can be grounded either in the consent or the will of the citizens or when the constitution reflects the ‘real’ identity of the members of the nation and promotes national justice..... The 1999 constitution does not qualify as a democratic constitution that's why I am posting my opinion here to raise the necessary awareness so that those with access to political power can do something about it.....

The current population figures and sharing formula at ederal level is based on a fraudulent census. That is one issue then there is no basis for saying Ekiti and Kano or Lagos or Rivers or Ogun etc should have the same number of senators making decisions. It does not matter if the US is doing t. I am not saying Nigeria has no advantages but many of the advantages are due to the huge population. If Ghana had the population Ghollywood would be big too. Accra might rank above Lagos in everything if the metro area contained 17 million people etc etc

That population is an asset. It’s one of the major reasons goods and services are relatively cheaper, and we all need to double down on it fast. For example, if we meter everyone, that population can reduce the average cost of electricity. But the system needs to be fully deregulated for real price discovery to happen.

In the real sense of it, the Eastern Region is a recent creation of the British in 1954—read Max Siollun’s books. The present South-South region has been interfacing with the Portuguese since 1472.

The fact of the matter is that anyone pushing for a return to the Eastern Region is only after the oil & sea-Access of the South-South. What baffles me is how elementary this strategy is: it assumes the South-South folks are idiots who cannot see beyond their noses to understand that their interests are more likely protected either in Nigeria or as an independent nation.
