The enemies seems to benefit more under any government in power, they're still buying your ancestral lands and are still building on them while your people continue crying and protesting because of hunger. Buying properties on another man's land and who benefits ? Where do the taxes go?you are the ones helping them add value to their land while yours turns to a wasteland no one is interested in acquiring......with all the money you spent acquiring the land,99 years after it goes back to the owners and you have to negotiate again.....the cycle continues. |

CodeTemplar: Protecting local farmer dont always work out well. There are strong-willed middlemen who unionize to milk farmers and consumers from one end to another. We saw that in a thread few weeks back when market women resisted on of their colleagues who was selling at lower price in Kwara state. They sell at intl market price. Controlled opening of the local market to foreign goods is better than total shutdown or opening. Have you wondered why food items that are majorly consumed in nigeria have been the most expensive? Cassava, Yam are exceptionally higher in price. The major reason for high food prices is inadequacy......we simply aren't producing enough also our agric economy is badly skewed to the detriment of the real local farmers......all this is due to lack of adequate investments by govt and relevant stakeholders,we have no reason to still be practicing subsistent farming....we have one of the lowest land productivity ratios 8n whe world comparatively. All these problems have been there for decades and cannot be wished away by hating tinubu or obi. |
Politics › Re: Bakers Protest Hike In Flour Price Despite FG Waiver by Lithiumite: 11:29am On Aug 15, 2024 |
Beremx: Tinubu isn't ready to solve hunger crisis in Nigeria. He makes a policy for zero tarrif on imported food items and gives a crazy condition for his policies.
Another massive protest loading soon. You need to protect your local farmers by disallowing different foods being dumped on us.....if you were to allow foreign rice unimpeded for instance, you will kill local businesses who are already into farming and processing, jobs would be lost, investments will be lost. Also we have limited availability of Forex and introducing this policy without some control can further worsen the already bad Forex rates. This policy will surely drive down prices of rice, wheat and maize but we can't sacrifice our economic interest for popular opinion. Don't just criticise without having a good hang of any topic |

omojeesu: 1. I have my farms though l live in an urban area. Just harvested my maize! 2. Sometimes I wonder how some of us reason. Did my post ever suggest that Tinubu should come and farm for me? 3. Do you have your own farm? 4. Serious governments promote local farming to prevent hunger in the land and not depend on importation. 5. If other countries don't farm and have surplus how are we going to import from them. 6. How safe is the food for our consumption? 7. When are we going to stop this culture of being mere consumers instead of being producers and exporters with added value? I am glad you mentioned you are a farmer......you should be able to better understand the problems we have in our agric sector.....we have been retrogressing in agric for decades we barely could provide enough to feed ourselves. The govt is to blame largely,I agree but people trying to place all the blame for the current food crises we are having is totally unacceptable to me. |

We have crude oil we are importing petroleum products!

Politics › Re: Customs Unveil Guidelines For Free Import Tariff Waiver On Staple Foods by Lithiumite: 7:52am On Aug 15, 2024 |
Newyorkitis: How will this bring down the price of rice if it has to be milled here in Nigeria? These people don't understand what it means to govern. Those of us that have done rice cultivation knows that if I mill 1 bag of 100kg rice, I might end up with 75-80 of rice. Who then suffers the loss? Bulk husked brown rice is cheaper than the finished one.....the good thing is that business men would be the once importing themselves and the competition would balance out prices.....anybody can now go and bring into the country and sell at your own price. |
Politics › Re: Customs Unveil Guidelines For Free Import Tariff Waiver On Staple Foods by Lithiumite: 7:49am On Aug 15, 2024 |
RecessionistPMB: The effect of this policy will be too negligible to be felt.
The cost of transporting these items will erode any perceivable price reduction.
Whatever has gone up is usually difficult to come down in Nigeria. There is imota mill in ikorodu Lagos that can feed the entire SW and there is a port terminal in same ikorodu......it should cost not more than 2,000 naira to transport 50 kg to and from that mill in Lagos. |

dimgbajwe: They have started. The 40 thousand naira bag of rice they say they will sell where is it today? Be calming down....the policy just took effect yesterday.....so more people can have access.....govt have been providing rice at subsidised rates but the people receiving are round tripping it to sell @70 to 80k. Nigerians are very terrible people, that's why govt now seeks to liberalise it and have genuine businesses bring it in so it can rich more people and govt stops wasting money subsidising rice for some few to feed fat |
Politics › Re: Customs Unveil Guidelines For Free Import Tariff Waiver On Staple Foods by Lithiumite: 7:41am On Aug 15, 2024 |
Majesty7: Customs have started again with wayo. Which one is, "husked brown rice"? Why not dehusked rice? Yes, we know that it is, husked *brown* rice but average Nigerian customs are illiterate and touts. They might attack the grain if the rice is not brown and called it polished rice. Polished rice is also dehusked but more processed than just, *husked brown rice*.
Customs are wild, devilish and street smart. The government should please look into that and make corrections. Customs are just trying to be smart here.
Secondly, what is all this bullshit about the need for importers to own a milling plant with a capacity of at least 100 tons per day, operate for at least four years and have enough farmland for cultivation? 100tons/pay is approximately 2000 bags (50kg) production per day. If we truly have mills that are already producing 2000 bags per day, do we need to import again? What sick country is this? It was the federal government that gazetted those items and not customs.however, finished rice will still come in through the back door. We have several mills in Nigeria that can achieve that capacity, the challenge had always been adequate feed stock, same problem dangote refinery is facing.however if imports are allowed there will be sufficient production which will eventually drop prices. This policy is masked so as to pretend to protect local producers but you and I know that this is Nigeria..... however,I believe this policy will crash prices to about 45 to 50k a bag. |

But they are trying to frustrate him from crashing the price. The it's high time for Nigerians to know that some people benefit more when Nigerian goes bad. That isn't possible, yes there will be some reduction which obviously makes sense but nothing outside 20-25% at most.....anyone looking for 200 naira fuel would be the biggest dreamer ever..... dangote isn't getting the fuel for free and he is buying at international price. |
