A water expert and the National president of the Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners Practitioners (AWDROP), Engr. Michael Ale has revealed that the present COVID-19 pandemic bedeviling the world had showed that government must provide running potable water for human wellbeing.

Speaking recently in an interview with some journalists, Ale stated that with COVID-19 pandemic presently ravaging the world, it shows government, corporate and concerned individuals must do more in providing drinkable and running potable water to save human lives.

According to him, only about 54% of Nigerian population presently have access to potable water while other 46% are at danger of unclean water.

He said: "By year 1990, about 25% of Nigerian population had access to pipeborne water supply. And between 1990 to 2015, the population who had access reduced to 7% considering the fact that population had increased beyond 200million. We also need to consider landmass expansion where green areas are now being populated by buildings.

"So, my accessment is that, we are not moving forward and this is coroborated by World Bank, FG and NIBS. Talking about general supply of potable water, only about 54% of Nigerian population presently can access it and about 46% shortfall recorded.

"Although, this is increasing through intervention by government, private bodies and other individuals. You can see volume of underground water supply is more than surface water.

"Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic, it tells us that we needed to do more to save lives by having running potable water. We are looking at 100% access by 2030 and it is achievable if we put things right.

"Challenges of inability to provide potable water for populace are multidimensional and we have to look at the problem from the holistic perspective. The problem is population expansion and inability to control it. Because, population explosure leads to uncontrolled urbanization.

"Today, government priority is shifting from water supply unlike the past because they feel we have various means to get water. Government should roll out plans to control urban activities. For example, each house should run pipe to connect other pipes outside to ease water supply to homes.

"Water is a resource and it needs to be controlled because what is not controlled is not valuable. There is this issue of indiscriminate drilling activities. This can lead to Earth tremor, earth quake, building collapse and other environmental hazards.

"In controlling indiscriminate activities, we must be wary of water pollution especially now there's issue of COVID-19 pandemic. A buried victim, if not properly buried, his or her body fluid can be washed into our well and contaminate them. That's why most ailments come from lack of hiegene.

"If there is proper control, a borehole can be sunk in an area and serve about 500 houses and this can save cost and environmental degredation", Ale explained.

THE Special Adviser to the Oyo State governor on Security, CP Fatai Owoseni (retd), on Wednesday allayed fear of residents in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state.

He said the peace will now reign in the area as those responsible for the rape and killings in communities across the local government had all been arrested.



Owoseni stated this while speaking at a town hall session themed ‘Tackling Insecurity in Akinyele,’ organised for stakeholders in communities in the council area by a radio station, JAMZ 100.1 FM.

Owoseni, a former commissioner of police in Lagos and Benue states, added that all steps had been taken to ensure that the experience of the last one month did not occur again in the area and in other parts of the state.

The security expert said the main culprit had led security operatives to all those aiding him, including a herbalist, “and the police will give out details of the development to the public soon.”



Owoseni, however, said while the government and security agencies had put in the right mechanism to ensure that such criminal acts do not become a norm in the community, the people also have roles to play in ensuring that they secure their environments “because security can only be effective when all stakeholders collaborate.”



In his welcome address, the general manager of JAMZ 100.1 FM, Tony Awobode, said the organisation is concerned about the issue of security of the area and urged people to give out required information to help security agencies do their work effectively.

Also speaking, the caretaker chairmen of Akinyele West Local Council Development Authority, Taoheed Jimoh Adedigba; Akinyele East, Muyiwa Ogunrinde and Akinyele South, Ahmed Kazeem, thanked the state government for its efforts in ensuring perpetrators of criminal acts in the community were arrested.

They further urged members of the society to be security- conscious and be vigilant at all times.

On her part, the member representing Ogbomoso North in the state House of Assembly and chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Olawumi Oladeji, expressed appreciation to the state governor for putting a round peg in a round hole, especially in the area of security, adding that every arm of government had been working since the first incident occurred in the council area.

A development expert, Michael Ale has advised Nigerian government on need to adopt knowledge based policies to address the aftermate effects of COVID-19 on the nation's economy.

Ale while speaking recently on an NTA program, Weekend Deal, he said in order to enhance a sustainable development in the country, the government must understand the concept of industrialization to make appropriate policies.

According to him, government's policies revolves around indept aspect of leadership saying: "talking about industrialization, we look at first, second and third industrial revolutions and we are now in the fourth industrial revolution, which has to do with the technology and drives sustaining development.

Speaking on how Nigeria can attain 2030 economic goal, Ale who is also the National president of the Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners Practitioners (AWDROP) in the country said the government need to consider knowledge based policies to attain the economic goal.

He said: "We need to consider academics in attaining goal 2030. The problem is, we are still at first industrial revolution stage in Nigeria. Now, we made use of oil and gas as maystay of the economy and we forgot farming which was our basics of our economy.

"Now, we are in COVID-19 pandemic period which is bringing revolution of adopting robots in our industries. In developed countries, businessmen sponsor academic researches to solve industrial problems especially in situations like this pandemic period and that's where relevance of academics lies.

"Therefore, government must look inward and revolve its policies around evolving challenges to maximize opportunities. It is therefore time that we must drive knowledge based economy and make it a template for all businesses to thrive", Ale said.

The controversial medical and investigative journalist, Dr. Kemi Omololu Olunlonyo has posted a video on YouTube where she boasted of winning incumbent Governor of Oyo, Seyi Makinde if she contest against him come 2023. Although, the broadcast was meant to educate the general public about the coronavirus pandemic in the country and in the world.

In the video, the Kemi Olunloyo who is daughter to former governor of the state, Omololu Olunloyo spoke at length about how some Nigerians who don’t even know her, perceive her as ‘one mad crazy woman’ because their friends told them so. She said this is a reason she feels Nigeria itself has been wrink, as people do not find out things about others, but they listen to what other people say tothem and then they make perceptions up, of who they are.



She also brought up the issue of Oyo state and about how people are abusing her.

In the video, she said: ” Oyo state is in a pandemic mode now, and i see people abusing me. Telling me Seyi is the best governor you have, Seyi may have been a good governor starting up but with this pandemic, I’m not saying he’s a bad governor, he’s really handling it very poorly. I feel like, when Seyi contracted the virus and recovered, he shouldn’t have been at the top of that task force. He should have appointed somebody at the top of thw task force, and preferably a medical doctor. That’s where UCH is, somebody could have been there. Even though UCH’s medical director also contracted it, there has to be one doctor in that whole Ibadan. Okay, if Seyi had put me at the top of the task force, i wouldn’t have taken it. She went on and on, talking about how Africa would soon experience the full force of the virus like the USA, Italy, and Brazil, alleging that South Africa’s health care system has already collapsed as it holds the record for the most coronavirus cases in the continent.



It was towards the end of the video, that she made a bold statement to those people who sit at home and just abuse her that she could become the next governor of Oyo state if she decides to run in 2023.



” Some of you sitting down there and abusing me, do you know that i ran in 2023, against Seyi Makinde for governor of Oyo state, I’ll probably win. You know why, because I’m popular, and what would win me that governorship seat is the popular vote.
