Two inmates of Kirikiri Prison in Lagos in spite of their incarceration have enrolled for doctorate degrees at the National Open University, NOUN.

The two doctoral candidates were among the three inmates who were awarded masters degrees by NOUN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdalla Adamu.

Tunwashe Kabiru and Oladipupo Moshood enrolled for Doctorate Degrees in Business Administration and Peace and Conflict Resolution, respectively.



Speaking at the ceremony, Comptroller General, Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Ja’afaru Ahmed, urged other inmates to make use of the opportunity provided by NOUN to further their education.

Ahmed said that the NPS had empowered many inmates with education from secondary to masters degree level as part of efforts to reform the prisoners.

“We have collaborated with Ministry of Labour to give inmates Trade Test Grades one, two and three and for those who want to further their education; we create an enabling environment for them. For those furthering their education, some have done WAEC while some have proceeded to university for degrees. No fewer than 420 inmates are currently studying in NOUN and 10 are in 400 level,” Ahmed said.

Presenting the degrees, NOUN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adamu, urged the inmates to take advantage of the institution’s free education to prisoners from first degree to doctorate levels.

Adamu said that most of the inmates chose entrepreneurial courses to enable them become independent after serving their jail terms. He appealed to the NPS to provide an enabling environment for NOUN to provide necessary equipment for inmates at its study centres in prisons.

“We focus our attention on making prisoner scholars; all the courses taken by inmates are free, from first degree to PhD level. “Hope should never be lost even when you are a prisoner, it is when you are educated that you will get your absolute freedom,” Adamu said.

The reproductive system of a 12-year-old girl, Faith Nwanja, who was allegedly tortured and mutilated by her mistress, Mrs Nkechi Bartholomew for being too stubborn has been seriously damaged.

The revelation was made, yesterday, by the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, while briefing journalists on the development. Nwanja, was tortured, mutilated and abandoned by Bartholomew.

Bartholomew, a childless woman and seamstress adopted Nwanja and took her to Onitsha, Anambra State, when she was eight years and allegedly disfigured her.
The woman allegedly inserted sticks inside the girl’s private parts which have caused her serious damage to the reproductive system. Nwanja has shocking scars and injuries all over her body, including eyes, mouth, head.

She also has bloodied mouth and has lost one of her hands to torture. Briefing journalists yesterday, Head of Department, Child Development of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Godwin Igwe said the health condition of Faith has worsened.

“The child has been undergoing medical examination by team of expert gynaecologists, a team of orthopaedic doctors, a team of expert opmologists because of serious harm inflicted on her reproductive system, her hand, her ear, her teeth all over.

Last week, her medical examination was concluded and the hospital management said the report will be released to the police as soon as it is demanded”, he said. Igwe accused the state Police command of refusing to arraign the suspect.

Two underage children of the same parents, Olufemitan Olaitan 9 and Oluwafifunmi Olaitan 7, were found dead inside a non-functioning deep freezer in Eyin Ala area of Akure, Ondo state capital yesterday April 12th.

According to reports, Mrs Olubunmi Olaitan, the mother of the deceased had gone out of their home to run some errands. She came back to meet her two sons inside the non-functioning deep freezer and raised an alarm.

No one could explain how the two primary school students got into the freezer and suffocated before they gave up.

While some residents suspect someone might have killed the children and dumped their bodies in the freezer, others are of the opinion that the children might have been playing inside the non-functioning deep freezer and got locked inside while there was no one at home to rescue the kids.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Femi Joseph said that there was no trace that the boys were killed, saying that the command did not make any arrest on the matter.
“We did not suspect any foul play because it appears as if the kids were playing inside the deep freezer and they were locked up in the process, while there was nobody at home to open the door for them.” he said
The remains of the boys have been deposited in a morgue.

A former Mobile Police Officer, Mr. Emenike Vincent, said he was framed up and dismissed, which forced him into the crime world. The suspect claimed to have taken to crime, using his uniform because he was wrongfully dismissed. Before his dismissal, Vincent was with Mobile 18, Owerri, Imo State.

He was sacked for allegedly corking and pointing his rifle at his superior. The dismissed officer was one of the suspects paraded by Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Anthony Ogbizi.The suspect said that he was dismissed after doing special duties in Kano, Kaduna and Abuja in 2012.

He said: “In 2012, I was sent to Kano, then I finished. The same week, I was sent to Kaduna, after I finished, I was sent to Abuja. I did all these duties without complaining only to be dismissed on trumped up charges.
I was dismissed maliciously on the flimsy allegation that I corked a gun against my superior officer.

That was not true! There was no evidence to support that, yet I was dismissed. My wife met some people who offered to help. She gave them money to review my case, but at the end, nothing was done. I also went to Abuja myself to see a man who promised to help me, still I was dismissed.” Vincent added that he was arrested in front of his mother’s house in Aba.

On how he came to keep the uniform that he was supposed to submit to the authorities after being dismissed, he said: “I had two pairs of police uniforms; I submitted only one before leaving the Force.”
But Ogbizi said: “The dismissed policeman told us that he leads a gang that uses tricycles to terrorise residents of Aba, while in police uniform.

The general public has been reporting robberies by men in police uniform. Vincent is one of them.” Ogbizi said Vincent was arrested while three of his gang members escaped. The police boss said that his men were on the trail of the fleeing suspects, vowing to rid Abia State of criminals.

Model who survived an accident which claimed the life of a friend says she has learned to show off her scars. Neli Zuma was left fighting for her life after the tragic smash and had to have skin removed from her thigh to cover a gaping wound in her stomach.

Neli, who was just 23 at the time, was left with scarring on her stomach and thigh and had to use a colostomy bag for 10 months.

Tragically her friend, whose car spun out of control and hit a wall, died after suffering fatal injuries from the accident.

Neli, who had just started out on her modelling career, said it left her body confidence at an all-time low.
But after months of trying to improve the way she saw herself, Neli from Durban, South Africa, decided it was time to show the world that she is no longer ashamed of her scars.

In addition to using her modelling to raise awareness on social media, Neli decided to create an online blog where she could share her journey and talk to others who have been through similar hardships.
Neli’s family and close friends also played a crucial role in her regaining the confidence to embrace her body.

Despite everything she has gone through, Neli no longer dreads going out in public during the summer time and she looks forward to a bright future.

Herdsmen have been confirmed to have killed five members of a family at Mbiya village, Takum LGA, Taraba state.

The suspected herdsmen said to be about 20 in number, stormed the family's farmland on Wednesday April 4th and burnt alive the head of the family and slaughtered his wife and children.

Confirming the attack, the chairman of the local government, Shiban Tikare, said the man, his wife and children were slaughtered like chickens.
