Business › Re: Petrol Can Sell For ₦605/Litre, Subsidy Is Accounting Magic - Olawepo-Hashim by londonerr: 6:58am On Sep 06
eazzzy1:
Countries like Canada, USA and the UK where most Nigerians like to japa do not subsidize fuel for their citizens.
That statement is partially true, but oversimplified.
While Canada, the US, and the UK generally do not offer direct consumer retail subsidies (meaning they don't fix pump prices below market value like Venezuela, Iran, or Saudi Arabia), all three governments provide billions of dollars in indirect fuel and fossil fuel subsidies.
The distinction comes down to how a subsidy is applied:
1. Direct Consumer Subsidies (Pump Price Caps)
* The Claim Holds True: Drivers in Canada, the US, and the UK pay market rates at the pump, plus federal and local fuel taxes. The governments do not artificially set low gas prices for the general public.
* Exceptions: During short-term economic shocks or high inflation, these governments have temporarily stepped in. For example, the UK capped domestic energy bills during the 2022–2023 European energy crisis, and several US states and Canadian provinces occasionally suspend gas taxes ("fuel tax holidays"wink to lower costs for citizens.
2. Production & Tax Subsidies (Corporate Level)
* The Claim Is False: Governments in these countries offer massive tax breaks, low-cost public land leases, and royalty exemptions to oil, gas, and energy companies.
* The Mechanism: By reducing operational costs for fossil fuel producers, these policies function as indirect subsidies, keeping supply higher and prices slightly lower than they would be under full market dynamics.
3. "Implicit" Subsidies (Environmental & Health Costs)
* Economic institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) define a subsidy broadly. Under their definition, if a government does not tax fossil fuels enough to cover the secondary costs they create—such as air pollution, healthcare expenses, and climate damage—it is providing an implicit subsidy. By this metric, the US, Canada, and the UK heavily subsidize fossil fuels.

Now that a price and date has been fixed for Dangote Refinery IPO. The thread is now dominated by analysis ( those buying, those that will not buy, those that doesn't even have money). Full details of the IPO is only contained in the prospectus which i know is not yet out. This will be one of the most hyped stock I have witnessed in a long while. This is just the beginning as the topic of discussion will not change until the initial public offering come and go. I have been privy to a guy on u- tube who said he won't buy the IPO because he was sure it will be oversubscribed. He even went ahead and listed about 13 stocks he would buy instead. He said the stocks will do because of the coming of Dangote Refinery. We also want to see the effects of this IPO on the NGX as a lot of analyst predicted the fall of prices of already quoted companies on the NGX because they would exit some of their already held positions to be part of the IPO. I really don't like the idea. Why put your two feet inside the water when you are actually testing the water. Why leave a known position to go for an unknown position. People will say all manners of things about this IPO just to belong.

My point is that whatever decision you are making, let it be your own decision. Don't let it be a bandwagon effect. It is when a topic is in the public domain that you see everyone will turn to an expert. Some will tell you to do something while he is not do the the same. Everyone will want to be relevant even in a faceless forum like this. I imploy you to read all but, the decision to buy or not to buy lies with you. Yours truly will definitely also buy a few units ( that which i can afford) and not for you to go and borrow to buy a stock. I can't even sell my already investment yielding something nice to go and chase after Dangote Refinery. As the saying goes is is risk not to take risk. This IPO is an opportunity in a life time. But, also know that after the IPO, it will later be listed on the NGX. Hence, if you miss out. You still gave a good opportunity to enter.

Lesson learnt: Always do your due diligenceas you remain the CEO of your portfolio

A word they say is enough for the wise. grin

Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by londonerr:
A lower share price tag, such as Dangote’s expected ₦525 entry point compared to Aradel’s ₦1,450 market price, often creates an illusion of cheapness. However, the individual share price is simply an arbitrary fraction determined by how many pieces a company chooses to divide its total equity into. Dangote created a structure with roughly 120 billion total shares, whereas Aradel operates with only around 4.3 billion....

When you evaluate total business value, the dynamic reverses entirely. Dangote’s listing targets an aggregate enterprise valuation near ₦63 trillion ($40 billion+), while Aradel’s total market capitalization sits around ₦6.3 trillion ($4.8 billion). Consequently, buying into Dangote requires paying a significant premium for a massive, heavily capitalized downstream single asset, whereas Aradel trades at a far more modest valuation multiple as a low-debt, cash-generative upstream producer.

Summarily.... Aradel is cheaper.
You pay roughly ₦8.70 for every ₦1 of profit Aradel makes. For Dangote, you pay over double that per Naira of earnings....

If we compare the N525 to prices of other stocks like DanCem, Aradel, Seplat etc, you realize that the IPO price is not too high.
So interesting that I would have benefit of feedback from Oando AGM to know what to do with my units.....either keep all, offload some or everything to buy the IPO.

if this is how you measure valuation with a straight line, dem go job you in the stocks market easily.

Why did Aradel not go to N10,000 since Seplat is now selling intra day around N14,800.

You need to wait for the prospectus to be out. You will know the total number of outstanding shares. Do your due diligence with their reported financial reports and then take your decision after seeing their income statement, Balance sheet and cash flow.

It may shock you that the N525 is expensive

I have been a long time user of itel products from the A16+ I bought during covid when my Samsung Note 2 died on me, to their A70 I bought when my Samsung Note 8 suddenly just gets hot for no reason grin

To the itel S26U I am currently using. when buying Itel go for higher ram like 8gig to enjoy lag free experience. Other things they have a low quality unlike other users.

I bought the Itel S26U only because my work is heavy duty and I won't go and buy Samsung 700k to break the screen and be looking for 500k to replace it. The S26U doesn't lag at all and the 6000mah battery last me around 2 days.

*Cutix Plc is in "turnaround mode" right now* — auditor out, profits back, new products, but stock still nervous.

Here’s the full picture:

*1. Corporate Updates*
*External Auditors Resign*
- *Who*: Ngozi Monica Okonkwo & Co
- *Effective*: 28 Aug 2026, after the 43rd AGM
- *Reason*: "Strategic review of audit portfolio" after completing FY ended 30 April 2026 audit
- *Next*: Board has started process to appoint replacement. Will file with NGX once done.

*2. Financials — The Big Turnaround*
*Q1 2027 Interim Report* released 31 Aug 2026:
- *Revenue*: ₦3.70B, *+5% YoY* vs ₦3.52B in Q1 2025
- *PBT*: ₦88.36M, *+199% swing* from ₦89.42M loss in Q1 2025
- *PAT*: ₦58.31M, *+155% swing* from ₦105.84M loss in Q1 2025

*Driver*: Management says "rigorous cost-optimisation framework" to rebuild margins.
So they didn’t need revenue to explode — they cut costs and protected profit. That’s classic for a cables manufacturer dealing with copper + FX pressure.

*3. Leadership & Strategy*
Still under *Acting CEO Uchechukwu Igbokwe* after the executive shake-up earlier this year.
*New bets*:
1. *Solar energy market* entry
2. *Fire-resistant cables* launch
Both are higher-margin, infrastructure-driven products. Makes sense given Nigeria’s power deficit + building codes.

*4. Market Reaction*
*Stock*: ₦2.37 as of late Aug 2026
*52-week low*: ₦2.28
Investors are cautious despite the profit rebound. Why? 2 reasons:
1. *Management + Auditor change in same year* = uncertainty
2. *Turnaround is early* — only 1 quarter of profit

*Reading between the lines*
This is the classic "penny stock recovery setup":
1. *Catalyst 1*: Costs cut → profits return
2. *Catalyst 2*: New products → growth story for solar/fire cables
3. *Overhang*: Governance — new auditor + acting CEO. Market wants stability before re-rating.

If the new auditor is a reputable firm and they confirm FY 2026 books are clean, that ₦2.37 could look cheap given PAT is already positive again.
