I saw this news on a blog and as usual many people were commenting out of ignorance. Some over-religious people attributed it to a "miracle".

But this is actually a simple Geography, so let's explain how it works.

You see, the world is divided into time zones due to imaginary lines that run from the North to South Poles called "Lines of Longitude".

Now, if you are scared of mathematics, you can stop here o.

Hong Kong (HKG) is located on longitude 114° East and Los Angeles (LAX) is located on longitude 118° West.

To get their time difference, you add (because they are in opposite directions):

118° +114° = 232°. Then, 232° ÷ 15° = 15.47 = 16 hours approximate.

After every 15° (or one hour), a new time zone begins. (I will explain TIME ZONE in detail in another post.)

The flight left HKG at 00:38 local time on January 1st.

To make the timing easier, let's use all time in GMT.

HKG is GMT + 8 hours

So we subtract 8 hours to get the departure time from HKG = 16:38 GMT (December 31st)

The flight duration from HKG to LAX is about 12 hours.

So, we add: 16:38 + 12 hours = 04:38 GMT (January 1st)

The flight arrived LAX at 04:38 GMT.

Then, convert 04:38 GMT to LAX local time.

LAX is GMT - 8 hours.

04:38 - 8 hours = 20:38 (December 31st)

The flight departed from Hong Kong on 1st January 2025 at 00:38 (12:38am) local time

And arrived at Los Angeles on 31st December 2024 at 20:38 (8:38pm) local time.
