PoliticsCOVID-19: Buhari To Address Nigerians Today by LORDofODDS(op): 6:46pm On Apr 27, 2020
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will address Nigerians at 8 pm today (Monday).

Personal Assistant on New Media to the President, Bashir Ahmad, made this known via a tweet.

He tweeted, “Buhari will address the nation later today, at 8:00 pm. Television, radio, and other electronic media stations are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the NTA and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria respectively for the broadcast.”

The President had on March 29 imposed a 14-day lockdown on the FCT and the two states to contain the spread of the virus. At the end of the 14 days, which terminated on April 13, the President extended the lockdown by another 14 days, saying the pandemic had become a matter of life and death and that it was no longer a joke.

However, barely a day to the end of the extension, stakeholders have disagreed on whether the President should extend the lockdown or ease it.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mr Boss Mustapha, had maintained that only the President could decide on whether there would be an extension of the lockdown or it would be lifted.

As of April 13 when the President extended the lockdown, the number of cases was 343 in 19 states and the FCT. The number of deaths was 10 while 91 persons had been discharged. But, as of today (Monday), there are 1273 confirmed cases of #COVID-19 reported in Nigeria; 239 recoveries and 40 deaths.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, said on Sunday that the state had yet to reach its COVID-19 peak despite recording the highest case so far.

He had also warned on March 27 that the state might see up to 39,000 cases but that if everyone practised good social distancing, the figure would be limited to 13,000.

During the week, the Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chike Ihekweazu, had also hinted that the virus would eventually spread to all the 36 states.

“There is no reason why it won’t (extend to every state in Nigeria), it is a respiratory virus,” he added.

The DG also said on Tuesday that the President would make tougher decisions in the coming week on measures to contain the spread of the virus.

“Next week, Mr President will make some very difficult decisions for the country in terms of the lockdown in three states but also across the country in different ways,” he added.

Already, there is increasing tension and impatience among people in the affected states and the FCT over the possibility that the lockdown might be extended.

A cross-section of Nigerians, who spoke to Sunday PUNCH, lamented that they were eager to go back to work, adding that staying at home for a month had become traumatising.

PoliticsBREAKING: Kaduna Extends Lockdown By 30 Days by LORDofODDS(op): 9:27pm On Apr 26, 2020
Kaduna State Government has extended the lockdown occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic in the state by 30 days.

This was contained in a statement on Sunday signed by Muyiwa Adekeye, media aide to Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The government had imposed its quarantine orders on the state for one month beginning March 26.

According to the statement, the governor’s extension decision followed the recommendation of the State Standing Committee on COVID-19 chaired by the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe.

It said the increasing record of coronavirus cases in neighbouring cities, especially Abuja, called for stiffer measures to be taken to curb the spread of the pandemic.

The government stated that the lockdown extension is effective Sunday, April 26, 2020, adding that the two-day window during which the restriction of movement was relaxed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays has been reduced to only one day; Wednesdays.

The statement read in part, “All persons that venture out of their homes for whatever reason must wear facemasks and observe social distancing everywhere they go, in markets and in authorised vehicles.

“All residents of Kaduna State are quarantined and must stay at home. No office, event centre, market, shop or business of any sort or place of worship is allowed to open.

“The only category of persons exempted are workers in essential services such as health workers, the fire service, water corporation, electricity distribution and security personnel. Tankers conveying fuel to petrol stations are also permitted to move.

“Businesses in the food and pharmaceutical value-chain are exempted and shall enjoy the protection accorded to other essential services.

“Schools, places of worship, event centres, sports grounds, bars, restaurants, public parks and all other places where large crowds could gather are to remain closed until further notice.”

The government stressed that no visitor is welcome in the state during the pandemic, adding that mobile courts have been empowered to try violators and impose the prescribed penalties, including fines, imprisonment and forfeiture of vehicles, upon conviction.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control as of Saturday night, 10 of the 1182 coronavirus cases reported in the country were confirmed in Kaduna State.

PoliticsObiano Relaxes Lockdown In Anambra, Asks Churches To Resume Activities by LORDofODDS(op): 7:53pm On Apr 25, 2020
The Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, has relaxed the lockdown on the state and has asked churches to commence full activities.

The governor stated this in a broadcast to the people of the state on Saturday evening.

Before the Saturday broadcast church activities had been restricted for 14 days as one of the measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

But on Saturday, Obiano asked the churches to resume full service, stating that the worshipers must wear face masks and observe the World Health Organisation’s guidelines about the pandemic during worship.

He listed the protocol to include regular hand washing, avoiding handshakes, application of hand sanitizers, and social distancing.

The Governor announced that movements around the state were not restricted, stressing, however, that all boundaries in the state remained closed.

He said, “All food and drug markets in the state are to open with immediate effect.

“I will meet with market leaders on Monday, 27th April, for further discussion. When to re-open the schools as well as when civil servants will be allowed to go back to offices will be announced soon.”

EducationStrike Continues Despite Payment Of Salaries – ASUU by LORDofODDS(op): 6:27pm On Apr 22, 2020
The Academic Staff Union of Universities says its ongoing strike would continue despite the order of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), that February and March 2020 withheld salaries of lecturers in federal universities should be paid

The Federal Government had previously withheld the lecturers’ salaries over their refusal to register in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

The union, among other issues, embarked on an indefinite strike, arguing that the implementation of the IPPIS was against the FG-ASUU 2009 agreement.

Reacting to the payment of withheld salaries, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi, insisted that the lecturers would not resume work because the strike was not only about IPPIS.

Instead, he told The PUNCH that the payment would pave the way for a meaningful dialogue with the government.

“Now, we can discuss without an atmosphere of intimidation. This will lead to a meaningful dialogue. The ongoing industrial strike action by the union is still on. Our strike is not just about the IPPIS,” he added.

He also queried the Federal Government’s motive of asking Vice-Chancellors to pay lecturers with their Bank Verification Number.

Ogunyemi said, “If they had not paid at this time, with what everyone is going through, it would have meant a declaration of war. The discussion will start when they pay. They have even attached a condition to the payment.

“Our members weren’t paid with BVN in the past. Why the sudden change? They should go back to the old system which they have always used to pay.”

The ASUU president said paying the lecturers was not a favour, adding that “Members worked in February and we were still working in March before this coronavirus pandemic broke. It is expected that a labourer is paid his wages. Even as we are talking, people are supposed to be prepared to get their April salary.”

A top official of ASUU, who is among the negotiation team in the FG-ASUU IPPIS crisis, however, told The PUNCH that top officials of the union would meet after the salaries are paid to determine the next line of action.

“The moment the salaries are paid, the National Executive Committee of the union would meet to deliberate on the next line of action,” he said.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had on Tuesday said the President directed the Minister of Finance, Budget and Planning, and the Accountant General of the Federation to effect the payment urgently to cushion the deleterious effects of COVID 19 pandemic lockdown on lecturers and members of their family.

The Labour Minister added that all the Vice-Chancellors were asked to revalidate the affected lecturers’ Bank Verification Numbers and forward to the Accountant General of the Federation for the payments.

The Federal Government had directed all federal tertiary institutions in the country to enroll in the IPPIS from February 2020.

Nairaland General19 Persons Die Of Lassa Fever In Bauchi by LORDofODDS(op): 12:12am On Apr 17, 2020
No fewer than 19 persons have died this year following the resurgence of Lassa fever in Bauchi State.

The State Deputy Governor, Senator Baba Tela, disclosed this at a press conference held on Thursday at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Bauchi.

He said no fewer than 48 persons were under watch and undergoing treatment for the deadly disease in the state.

He said, “It is not as if we have gotten rid of Lassa fever completely in the state; No, we have not.

“And so far as at week 14 of our campaign, the total number of death to Lassa fever is 19 and we don’t have any new case so far.

“And we are following up contacts of about 48 process and those 48 have been confirmed and are under medication and they are recovering fast.”

The deputy governor, who is also the Chairman, Bauchi State Task Force Committee on COVID-19 and Lassa Fever, stated that the biggest challenge the state has is that there is a low level of awareness among the citizens.

He urged the people of the state to always report any suspected case of Lassa fever in the state, adding that early discovery and treatment could help patients recover.

PoliticsNCoS: Maryam Sanda Not Granted Pardon by LORDofODDS(op): 12:04am On Apr 17, 2020
The Nigerian Correctional Service has refuted speculations that a death row inmate, Maryam Sanda, was granted presidential pardon last Thursday, alongside 70 other inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje.

The NCoS said Sanda did not meet the requirements for the pardon, noting that she was still in custody and “will remain as such.”

Sanda was convicted and sentenced to death by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in January, for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.

Justice Yusuf Halilu said every available evidence had proved that Sanda fatally stabbed her husband to death in Abuja on November 19, 2017.

The NCoS spokesman, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Chuks Njoku, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, said the condemned inmate did not fit into any of the categories of inmates who qualified for pardon as listed by the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

The statement explained that the categories for the amnesty include, convicts who are 60 years and above; those serving three years and above with less than six months to serve; inmates with ill-health likely to terminate in death; inmates with mental ill-health and inmates with an option of fine not exceeding N50,000 with no pending case.

Others are convicted pregnant women and women with child, convicted inmates with minor offences and those who had spent 75 per cent of their sentence after remission.

Njoku stated, “It obvious that Maryam Sanda did not meet any of the above-mentioned requirements and therefore, did not benefit from the presidential pardon. We further want to assure the public that Maryam Sanda is in our custody and will remain as such.

“The Controller General of Corrections, Ja’afaru Ahmed, advises the public to discountenance the rumour that Sanda benefited from the presidential pardon.”

PoliticsInterpol Foils Nigeria-linked €1.5m Face Mask Fraud by LORDofODDS(op): 11:28am On Apr 16, 2020
The International Criminal Police Organisation says it has foiled a coordinated multinational face masks supply fraud worth €1.5 million allegedly linked to Nigeria.

The agency explained that the suspects used a compromised email address linked to a legitimate company in Spain selling face masks and a fake website.

The company originally claimed to have 10 million masks but could not deliver them and later referred the buyer to a dealer in Ireland who promised to put the buyer in touch with a different supplier in The Netherlands.

The Interpol said, “Claiming to have a strong commercial relationship with the company, the man provided assurances that the alleged Dutch company would be able to supply the 10 million face masks.

“An agreement for an initial delivery of 1.5 million masks was made, in exchange for an upfront payment of €1.5m.

“The buyers initiated a bank transfer to Ireland and prepared for delivery.”

But just before the order was to be delivered, the Interpol explained that the buyers were told that the funds had not been received, and the fraudster asked that an emergency transfer of €880,000 be made to the suppliers in The Netherlands.

It added, “The fund was sent but the buyers soon realised that they have been defrauded and immediately contacted their bank in Germany, which in turn contacted Interpol’s financial crimes unit."

Interpol disclosed that it contacted its National Central Bureau in Dublin as well as the Irish bank, noting that the prompt intervention by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau allowed them to freeze the €1.5m in the account and identify the Irish company involved.

“The Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service quickly tracked down the €880,000 which had been transferred from the German company. Nearly €500,000 of those funds had already been sent to the United Kingdom, all of which was destined for an account in Nigeria,” the global police said.

CrimeLockdown: One Dies As Hoodlums Attack Lagos Communities by LORDofODDS(op): 10:25am On Apr 16, 2020
A yet-to-be-identified person has been killed during a clash between hoodlums from Aboru and Mosan in the Oke-Odo and Ipaja areas of Lagos State.

Similarly, armed robbers, in the early hours of Wednesday, attacked Anthony Village and the Iju Ishaga area of Lagos.

PUNCH Metro gathered that during the clash on Monday, a man was injured and died while being rushed to hospital for treatment.

In a footage trending on the social media, a man was seen carrying the victim on his left shoulder to an unknown destination as he mounted a motorcycle.

“They have killed him; they have killed him; go and dump him there; Abesan is on fire,” the recorder of the footage said, while the corpse was being conveyed to where he was allegedly killed.

An eyewitness, identified simply as Taiwo, aka Akala, told one of our correspondents on Wednesday that the man carrying the corpse was Eze, adding that after he dumped it on the kerb of a canal around the Aboru Bridge, he mobilised hoodlums from Aboru to attack residents of Mosan.

Taiwo said, “Because of this COVID-19 lockdown, a lot of people stayed at home. Initially, we heard that the One Million Boys were coming to attack us in our community, so, we mobilised to defend ourselves. But around 3pm, I saw Eze on the motorcycle with a corpse and he dumped it at Mosan, close to the Aboru Bridge.

“When I asked him to explain what happened, he said everything was set and left with a threat. Later on, he mobilised armed hoodlums to attack us in Mosan.

“During the attack, a lot of households were robbed, property looted and vehicles vandalised. The hoodlums were led by Eze and they came from Aboru. A lot of residents have abandoned their homes because of the incident.”

It was learnt that residents of Shopade, Anike-Ibikunle and Koshemani streets in Mosan were attacked and dispossessed of their valuables.

One of the victims, who identified herself simply as Adijat, said the hoodlums invaded her house and robbed her and her neighbours, adding that the incident was connected with the corpse found at Mosan.

The corpse was said to have been deposited in the Yaba Mortuary.

He stated that a case of murder was suspected, adding that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, for discreet investigation in a bid to unravel the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.

Elkana said, “The corpse has been recovered by personnel of the command from the Ipaja Police Division and it was the corpse that caused the clash between the Aboru and Mosan communities.

“In the footage trending on social media, a suspect was seen carrying the corpse, which was later dumped in Mosan. A picture of another corpse lying on the floor also emerged on the social media, but after analysing the footage, we have been able to ascertain that the corpse was the same as the one dumped in Mosan.

“We have deposited the corpse in the mortuary. We are suspecting a case of murder, but detectives are currently on the trail of the man seen dumping the corpse. The case has been transferred to the SCIID for further investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the person’s death.

“The Divisional Police Officer, Ipaja, CSP Tokunbo Abaniwonda, held a meeting with stakeholders in the community today (Wednesday) and most of the facts surrounding the recovered corpse and the clash were revealed. We have also stationed men at strategic locations in the community to forestall reprisal and restore the confidence of the residents.”

In Anthony Village and Iju Ishaga, residents told PUNCH Metro that the assailants, who were mostly youths, were over 50 in number.

A resident of Adebayo Mokuolu Street, Anthony Village, said the hoodlums came through the Gbagada Expressway.

The resident stated, “Some hoodlums came into our community through the Hotel Newcastle and they vandalised vehicles. They couldn’t make their way around Anthony Village easily, because most of the streets have gates.

“Luckily, some local security men were able to repel them, but they threatened to return in numbers. We reported the matter to the Anthony Police Division.”

A resident of Iju told PUNCH Metro that the hoodlums also attacked several persons on Monday and Tuesday in broad daylight.

The resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that the hoodlums wielded knives, vandalised many vehicles and broke into people’s homes.

He said, “We formed vigilance groups last night (Tuesday) and kept vigil in order to prevent those boys from coming into our houses. These young guys are not even up to 25-year-old. Even in the day time, they attacked people, snatched phones and ATM cards.

“On Tuesday, they went on rampage on Alfred Williams Street. So, at night, we prepared ourselves by forming vigilance groups. We informed the policemen at the Iju Police Station, Red House, but they never arrive on time.

“We seriously need increased police presence here if this lockdown will last longer.”

The PPRO told PUNCH Metro that security was being beefed up across the state, adding that any hoodlum caught disturbing the peace would be dealt with.

“We have stationed our men in strategic places across the state. We have increased our presence in the areas more than ever,” Elkana stated.

HealthCoronavirus Testing: Lagos Creates 20 Centres, FCT Combs Residents’ Houses by LORDofODDS(op): 10:12am On Apr 16, 2020
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday said 20 centres would be created in Lagos State for collection of samples from people suspected to have contracted COVID-19.

The NCDC Director General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, who disclosed this at a press conference of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, said the samples would be taken to the molecular laboratories in Lagos for testing.

Ihekweazu also said door-to-door collection of samples would soon begin in Abuja. He added that Nigeria had increased her testing capacity to 3,000

At the press conference, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, disclosed that the ministry had expanded its case definition for COVID-19.

The NCDC had, on Tuesday, said the problem the country was facing was not the inadequacy of molecular laboratories, but how adequate samples would get to the labs for testing.

It said the 12 molecular laboratories in the country, which it put their capacity at 1,500 on Tuesday, were not conducting enough tests.

At the PTF press conference on Wednesday, Ihekweazu said part of the measures to contain the spread of the virus was adoption of a change in strategy after more testing laboratories had been established.

Samples of people with acute respiratory infection, high fever to be taken

He said, “We are trying to change our strategy now and test more people. The testing laboratories have increased, but the bottleneck now is getting samples from the right people.

“We are setting up 20 health care facilities in Lagos to collect samples from people that think they have acute respiratory infections and high fever. We are intensifying our surveillance in health, so hospitals around Lagos and the FCT (Federal Capital Territory) can collect samples from people with high respiratory infections.

“In certain Abuja communities, we are going from door to door to collect samples from people that have acute respiratory infections. We are doing the same in Lagos. In these two places, Lagos and the FCT, where there is high incidence of the infection, we are now going to the patients to collect samples.

“Core centres have improved dramatically and we are urging the people that think they have acute respiratory infections to call us. Go to one of these 20 centres (in Lagos). Don’t go to any other centre. Lagos State will announce them as they are set up and make them accessible to everyone.

“We have the capacity right now to test 3,000 per day, but that capacity is not being fully utilised. That is why we focus on Lagos and the FCT.”

Health workers, senior citizens to be prioritised

The NCDC boss added that with a shortage of personal protective equipment around the world, Nigeria would give priority to health workers at isolation centres and laboratories, as well as senior citizens on the use of face masks.

He said, “It (use of masks) has been a controversial topic, but it does not have to be. The number of cases from over the world has risen to over two million with over 100,000 deaths of a disease that none of us knows about. The scale of the disease outbreak and response has to radically increase and the aspect of mask is one of them.

“On the other hand, there is a reality that we face. There is a chronic global shortage of personal protective equipment, including masks, around the world. The world was not prepared for a pandemic of this scale. We have to prioritise certain part of our population.

“Fifty per cent of the world masks are produced by China that has been locked down for months. They are now restarting their production and thankfully, some of those things are coming out.”

He said countries that produced medical materials, including masks, had banned their exportation because they too needed them.

You just wrote NONSENSE

I am sure you wouldn't have a problem with them coming home if you have siblings among them

Because the pandemic hasn't reached epidemic level in Nigeria, the government should bring them home and isolate them.

While they are in isolation, they should be given proper treatment. After all, this government keeps telling us that they are treating and discharging Nigeria's Covid-19 patients, meaning they are doing a great job with the virus.

If Nigerians want to come home, they should be brought home. Yes, that's actually one of the ways you win respect among other countries. It shows you have regards for your citizens.
Am not here to drag words with you but what I want you to know is that it's better for them to remain there in the UK with a good health care system rather than bringing them back to Nigeria endangering others.

I hope you knew what happened to Italy and USA, trying to evacuate it citizens out of China, now they are the biggest hit in the world. So it's beta we manage the case we have at hand. Peace
SportsI Will Never Coach Nigeria Again – Oliseh by LORDofODDS(op): 2:36am On Apr 14, 2020
Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has sensationally disclosed that he will never coach the country’s national team again, even if he was handed the opportunity a second time.

Oliseh, who had a total of 52 caps for the Eagles, scoring two goals between 1993 and 2002, managed the national team between 2015 and 2016, before quitting unceremoniously due to unresolved issues with the Nigeria Football Federation, including unpaid salaries.

In an Instagram live video chat with The PUNCH, the former Borussia Dortmund and Ajax midfielder said he would never coach the Eagles again.

“No, I don’t have the intention of ever coaching the (Super) Eagles again. I loved working with the boys, I love coaching my country, but the atmosphere around it was no longer healthy.

“I didn’t want the job anymore. Health-wise I was not feeling too good; secondly, we were owed salaries. I was spending money on my health and on my team. I just couldn’t die on the job.

“Truth is, we have a foreign coach now and from what I heard and know, he is being paid four times the wages Stephen Keshi and I were paid and these are two players (himself and Keshi) who won trophies for Nigeria.

“I’ve never heard Gernot Rohr complain about wages. Keshi, while he was coaching, was always complaining, when I was coaching for four months, I was unpaid, for six months my assistants were unpaid, so I had to leave the job; we were also being frustrated.”

Oliseh stated that he had plans to take the team to the next level before he parted ways with his employers, the NFF.

“I had good plans for the team. You will notice that at a time I brought in (Wilfred) Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, young players who are dominating now. I brought in a world-class goalkeeper (Carl Ikeme) because I felt the old breed were ready to leave.

“The same philosophy I used while with the Eagles was the same philosophy France used at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“Sometimes you ask yourself questions about Nigeria. You won laurels for the country as a player, you’re doing well as a coach, you were about qualifying for the World Cup and you’re unpaid for four months.”

The 45-year-old last managed Dutch side, Fortuna Sittard, in 2018.

HealthCOVID-19: 10 Nigerians Awaiting Evacuation From UK Test Positive by LORDofODDS(op): 2:06am On Apr 14, 2020
No fewer than 10 Nigerians, out of the 40 persons subjected to the mandatory COVID-19 test for those who registered in the United Kingdom to return home, have tested positive.

The results of the tests, which were released on Monday in London, indicated that the 10 individuals were asymptomatic, raising fears that they might have infected other people.

This was said to have sparked panic among the staff of the Nigerian High Commission in London and other Nigerians who heard about the development.

Saturday PUNCH had exclusively reported on April 11 that 2,000 Nigerians, mostly in the United States, the United Kingdom, China and the United Arab Emirates, had registered and indicated their intention to come home.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which compiled a list of such stranded Nigerians, gave some conditions .

The ministry said the intending returnees would pay for their journey back home. Also, it stated that they would be compulsorily tested for COVID-19 before coming back to Nigeria.

One of our correspondents gathered on Monday that many of the stranded Nigerians were students and businessmen, who travelled to the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

It was learnt that many of those who tested positive were not resident in the UK, but went to the European country for business and educational purposes.

A source in the high commission explained that Nigerians, who registered for the evacuation, were being tested in a batch of 40 . The source added that another batch would soon undergo the COVID-19 test.

He stated, “We have just received the results of the first batch of 40 Nigerians who registered for evacuation to Nigeria. The results show that about 10 persons tested positive for COVID-19 and they have commenced treatment in isolation centres.

“What is generating consternation is the fear that they might have infected many other people since they were not showing symptoms of the deadly disease.”

The PUNCH learnt that efforts were going on to begin contact-tracing.

The spokesman for Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, Abdul-Rahman Balogun, confirmed the development, stating that those who tested positive had commenced treatment.

He said, “Yes, I can confirm that the results of the first cluster of 40 persons revealed that between eight and 10 Nigerians tested positive for coronavirus. They have since commenced treatment in the UK.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, told The PUNCH on Monday that the Federal Government was exploring all options for the evacuation of the stranded Nigerians.

When asked if the government would charter an aircraft for the evacuation of the over 2,000 individuals, Onyeama simply said, “We are exploring all options.”

Many Nigerians have been clamouring to return home following the increase in cases of COVID-19 across the world.

A viral video showed about 100 Nigerians being evicted from their homes and hotels in Guangzhou by the Chinese authorities last week, while their passports were reportedly seized.

The minister subsequently summoned the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Zhou Pingjian, last Thursday, over the harassment and stigmatisation of Nigerian in the Asian country.

This country is becoming a big mess day by day, the govt care less and only thinks about their pockets cry
CrimeLockdown Nightmare: How 200 Armed Gangsters Invaded, Robbed Ogun, Lagos Communit by LORDofODDS(op):
Residents of some communities in Ogun and Lagos have lost sleep over robberies in the neighbourhoods by a gang of roaming hoodlums seizing the coronavirus lockdown to unleash terror on the two states.

There have been overwhelming complaints by residents of Owode, Ilepa, Ifo, Arigbajo, Itori, Dalemo, Ijoko, Ogba Ayo, Mosa, Joju, Sango, Ota, Oniyale among other communities in Ifo and Ado-Odo Ota local government areas of Ogun State over how hoodlums have been dispossessing them of their valuables day and night.

There was also unrest in FESTAC Town, Jankara and Ifako-Ijaiye areas of Lagos State on Saturday afternoon as hoodlums besieged the populated areas to rob residents and loot shops.

The incidents have marred the 14-day lockdown order of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the two states.

Sunday PUNCH had reported that a gang led by an ex-convict identified simply as Felix aka Confidence, sacked a police checkpoint in Dalemo, Ogun State on Tuesday and robbed residents.

Although a reinforcement team later dispersed the robbers, it was gathered that they struck again around 10pm on Friday at Agbado Crossing and Randle in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Many residents said they had resorted to keeping vigils and making bonfires to secure their communities from the hoodlums which they said numbered about 200.

Sources told our correspondent that the hoodlums are always armed with cutlasses and locally made guns while striking in droves.

A resident of Ijoko, Sanni Rabiu, said, “I couldn’t sleep till morning for two days now.”

In what he described as ‘sinister effects of COVID-19,’ another resident, Opeyemi Johnson, said thugs had become thieves and called on security personnel to act fast.

“I was outside our gate almost all night with fume-stricken bonfires,” he added.

“We need help in Ogun State. People are being robbed not only at night but in the afternoon too. Ijoko, Ifo, Sango and the likes have been under robbery attack since this (last) week. We can’t sleep; residents take turn to do vigilantes,” a youth, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

Outcries of residents within the troubled communities have also flooded the social media, calling out police authorities with the hashtag, ‘#Ogununrest.’

“The people of Sango Ota, Owode, Ilepa, Ifo, Arigbajo, Itori, Dalemo, Ijoko, Ogba Ayo, Mosa can no longer sleep or be at peace because of incessant armed robbery every day even (in) broad daylight. They are ransacking house to house. I am a victim this afternoon. Help,” one Prince Afolarin twitted on Saturday.

@Okikiola_pr said staying home amid the lockdown was no longer safe, adding that landlords and youths now come out at night to safeguard their homes against robbery.

“It’s too much. Ifo is hotter,” he added.

“What is the Lagos and Ogun state governments doing about perpetual armed robbery going on between Abule-Egba all the way to Ifo? We don’t sleep at night since the start of the lockdown. All those toll gate boys have been looting shops and houses,” one Lawrence Hortons wrote.

Another resident, Sherifdeen Ojelabi, urged the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, to arrest the situation.

“In my hood, Sango Ota, Agbado, Owode, Ilepa, Ifo, Arigbajo, Itori can no longer be at peace because of incessant armed robbery every night. CP Ebrimson should take action as boys prepared for war against criminals,” he said.

Sunday PUNCH also gathered that some shops in Jankara Market in the Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State were looted by hoodlums while some residents of FESTAC Town were robbed

“Currently, Festac Town is on a heavy shelling by the men of the underworld. This is scary particularly in broad daylight,” one Korede Abdullah raised the alarm on Facebook on Saturday.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, in a statement on Saturday, said Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants and tactical teams had been deployed in different parts of Lagos State to tackle the menace, adding that 36 six suspects had been arrested.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, in a statement on Saturday, said Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants and tactical teams had been deployed in different parts of Lagos State to tackle the menace, adding that 36 six suspects had been arrested.

He said, “The Commissioner of Police Lagos State Command, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered the immediate deployment of operatives of the command’s Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants, Special Anti Robbery Squad, Anti Cultism Squad and Raiders to various parts of Lagos State to support the efforts of area commands and divisional patrol teams already deployed to tackle the menace of social miscreants and violent crimes such as robbery perpetrated by hoodlums.

Operatives of the Command’s Rapid Response Squad are positioned in strategic locations to promptly respond to distress calls. Patrols are intensified around markets and stores to prevent hoodlums from stealing and looting. Patrol teams are equally deployed in various communities and streets.

“Nine suspects were arrested along Abule Egba and Ifako Ijaiye areas after operatives of Lagos State Command successfully foiled a robbery attempt on residents in communities under neighbouring Ogun State. Investigation is ongoing. The suspects will soon be charged.”

Elkana said operatives also responded to a distress call on Burma/Creek Road Apapa, where seven gangsters engaging in supremacy battle in the area were arrested.

“There mission was mainly to steal and loot under the guise of supremacy battle,” he added.

The police spokesperson in Ogun State, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, could not be reached on his mobile for comment on Saturday.

Abimbola had in a statement on Friday said the Ifo crisis was supremacy battle between two rival cult groups which degenerated into robbery and other criminal activities, adding that police teams had been drafted to the area for ‘aggressive patrol.’

The statement read in part, “Their efforts yielded positive results as five of the hoodlums were apprehended in the Ijako area of Sango Ota. The patrol teams also moved to the Winners Church area along Idiroko Road where another suspect was arrested with a brand new locally-made short gun loaded with five live cartridges and assorted charms.

“Also, the operatives extended their operation to Araromi community in Agbado where three other suspects were arrested with a face mask and assorted charms.

Earlier, 10 of the hoodlums have been picked up at various locations in Ifo, Kajola and Ososun areas of Ifo Local Government Area by SARS operatives.”

SportsChukwueze Fastest Player I’ve Played With – Carzola by LORDofODDS(op): 10:59am On Apr 12, 2020
Former Arsenal midfielder, Santi Carzola, says current Villarreal teammate, Samuel Chukwueze is the fastest player he’s shared the pitch with.

Carzola, the La Liga 2006/2007 Footballer of The Year singled out the Eagles player for encomiums over his performance and contributions to the El Submarino Amarillo.

Carzola had revealed to Marca that he received calls from England, notably from Arsenal on Chukwueze’s performance for the club.

Carzola said, “They ask me about them (Chukwueze and Pau Torres) and think they can make the jump to the Premiership tomorrow.

“It’s good that great teams are interested in young players from Villarreal but for the moment I tell them to leave them alone here,” he told The Boot Room.

Chukwueze, the AFCON 2019 Bronze medalist is on the radar of English Premier League giants Arsenal FC as the gunners are looking to find a long term replacement for Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 20-year-old former Diamond Football Academy has scored three goals in 26 matches for the Yellow Submarine this season and he has three assists to his name as Transfermarkt rates him as 13 percent proficient in goal participation for his club.

The Super Eagles player was described as a “Precocious winger with UEFA Europa League experience” by UEFA’s official website and he was named the Nigeria Football Federation’s young player of the year for 2017/18 respectively.

PoliticsIgbo, Reno Omokri Clash Over Coronavirus by LORDofODDS(op): 9:56am On Apr 12, 2020
Mixed reactions have continued to trail online comment credited to a former aide of President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Reno Omokri, over his call for the people of the South East region of Nigeria to stop the increasing habit of begging.

According to the former presidential aide, instead of begging, the Igbo should use their God-given talents to earn their living.

Omokri had on Thursday, through one of the social media platforms, TwitterNG, told the south east people that Coronavirus lockdown condition was not enough to make them beg.

According to him, “If you are from the SE, I urge you to ask your elders about this: Igbos used to beat fellow Igbos who begged. Begging is never part of Igbo culture. Don’t allow conditions make you lose ancient virtues that made your race the pride of Black Africa.

“If you are from the SE, this #CoronaVirus lockdown condition is not enough to make you beg. After the civil war in 1970, Igbos were poor. But what shocked the world was that they did not beg. Instead, they worked and traded their way out of poverty.”

However, Omokri’s statement generated a lot of reactions from some online users. While some agreed with, and applauded him for standing on the side of truth, others berated him for an unwarranted attack on the Igbo people.

Reacting, @ifywc and @VeronicaNelly7 berated Omokri saying that an Igbo name was begging online does not make south east people beggers. “True… but because someone with an Igbo name is begging doesn’t mean south easterners are beggers.” According to @VeronicaNelly7, “That any Igbo man or lady drop his or her details doesn’t mean we are begging. Just passing out time due to the lockdown. Begging is not in our DNA”

On his part, @SUGobimba was utterly displeased with Omokri’s unsolicited advice and asked him to leave people alone if he could not assist them. “If you want to help people online just help them or tell them you can’t help not to insult people from south east region.”

Reacting in the same vein, @changes_itz was surprised that Omokri could single out south east alone even when the situation was affecting everybody. “I don’t get it, you only work your way if there is an opportunity but when world economy is on break, I don’t see how that is possible when everyone is only worried about survival”

@ogechi042 and @Obokohwoisrael took a jab at him describing his ‘so called’ giveaway as not truly free. “Even your so called give away is not free, You people task to accomplish which is to follow your paddy apostle on Twitter. So, those people you are insulting are just hustling. I think it’s wise to say that they are working to get paid but instead of paying them, you are insulting them”, @ogechi042 tweeted.

“Oga, the insult you dish out to Nigerians ever since you started tasking them to follow other handles and making retweets just for 30$ or less is vile”, @Obokohwoisrael added.

Meanwhile, @jerryrobben was of the opinion that Mr Omokri was the one encouraging begging. He said: “…Coming from someone that does auditioning before giving out money. If you really want to make sense, stop encouraging people to beg online.”
