One of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302’s pilots told the other “pitch up, pitch-up” moments before the Boeing 737 Max jetliner crashed three weeks ago, a new report has revealed. According to The Wall Street Journal, that instruction and other information about the plane’s final moments paint a picture of a flight crew that was quickly overwhelmed. The Ethiopian Airlines jet took off from Addis Ababa on March 10 and ran into trouble almost immediately, the Journal reported. First Officer Ahmed Nur Mohammed contacted the control tower and in a crackling transmission reported a “flight control problem,” according to the newspaper, which cited people close to the ongoing investigation. The tower asked for details as Captain Yared Getachew tried to climb and correct the glide path, the paper reported. Two minutes into the flight oscillation became a wild bounce, then a dive. The flight lasted fewer than six minutes. The pilot who urged the other to pitch up was not identified, as all 157 people on board the plane were killed. The newspaper’s report came as Boeing faces mounting pressure to roll out a software update for its 737 Max, its best-selling jet. A faulty anti-stalling system on the Max is suspected in the disaster, which occurred shortly after takeoff. The Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) flight-control feature is also suspected in the crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max in Indonesia last October, according to the BBC. The Lion Air flight went down soon after takeoff, killing all 189 people on board. Arlines grounded 737 Max jets in their fleets after the Ethiopian Airlines crash. It is hoped there will be a fix in time for the peak summer travel season, the Associated Press reported. The Max remains grounded worldwide and airlines are losing money because of canceled flights. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/final-words-of-pilot-of-crashed-ethiopian-airlines-plane-revealed/

Doris Esa (Nan)The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has warned that flogging and physically assaulting disarmed suspected bandits were totally unacceptable. Such action meted on disarmed bandits it said was not in consonance with the Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) guiding the conduct of the operation. NAF’s spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, described as “totally unacceptable’’, the reported flogging and physical assault of suspected bandits by some Military personnel in Zamfara. Daramola said in a statement in Abuja that, “the attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to a video and some pictures circulating on some social media and online platforms showing some military personnel flogging suspected armed bandits at Shinkafi Local Government Area (LGA) in Zamfara State’’. ” The NAF has discovered that some of its personnel were part of the joint team stationed at the Galadi Sub-Sector at the time. ” Our personnel have always been directed to respect the rights of innocent civilians as well as captured combatants, no matter the provocation. ” The joint team had, sequel to intelligence reports, intercepted a group of suspected armed bandits, including some fighters from across the border, at their Sububu Forest hideout whilst they were on the verge of executing an attack against innocent civilians in Shinkafi. ” In the process, the team recovered one AK-47 rifle along with 3 loaded magazines and 3 dane guns from the bandits. ” In an effort to obtain further information on the criminals’ plans and the location of their armoury, the troops employed unauthorized, crude corporal methods,” he said Daramola said the NAF has zero tolerance for such human rights violations, adding it has since initiated appropriate action to address the anomaly. ” The public is to please note that the NAF has zero tolerance for such human rights violations and has since initiated appropriate action to address the anomaly. ” In this regard, a Board of Inquiry (BOI) has been set up by the Headquarters Special Operations Command (HQ SOC) to determine the remote and immediate causes of the incident with a view to ensuring that appropriate disciplinary action is taken against all NAF personnel found culpable.” The spokesman said the public would be kept informed on the outcome of the investigations. He said: “The NAF, as an organisation, remains a professional fighting force that would continue to operate within the ambit of all relevant laws and procedures.’’ Daramola said the NAF would also continue to operate in line with international best practices, whilst remaining fully accountable to the Nigerian people. Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, says some cities in Nigeria can now boast of constant power supply. He said this on the Sunrise Daily programme of Channels Television on Wednesday. “Sitting down here I can tell you some states that have almost 24 hours – Kebbi, Yobe. Some have five, some have 10 and there are still outages,” he said. He said the constant power supply in some states is due to the increase in the transmission capacity. The transmission capacity has grown, he said, adding that the figure was about 8,100 watts as at December 2018. “The generation capacity is also increasing,” he said. “It is a value chain where the distribution is not matching up the available power and from time to time, there are slacks,” Mr Fashola said. He said the Ministry of Power has moved forward but needs to implement the short term goals it set. “The short term goals are incremental power and stable supply in some places,” he said. “The government has decided that as 40 per cent holder of everything in the distribution of power, we have our programme to invest N72 billion which will involve installing transformers and all of that,” he said. “We created a metre access provider regulation. What it does is to create a new plan of investment programme. We manufacture, produce, supply and install metres and fill the gap the distribution companies cannot raise capital to fill. They cannot do so alone, they must do so under a procurement policy with the distribution company,” he said. The minister said the federal government will solve the problems of poor power supply in the country and will also keep informing citizens on the watts being consumed in the country. “We are applying many solutions at the same time. So when we were talking about how much megawatts is being used, we have created a new page which will bring solution,” he said. Mr Fashola recently sparked outrage by saying the federal government should not be blamed for poor electricity supply across the country. The minister said business people operating in the sector should be blamed for the poor state of electricity supply to Nigerians. He argued that since the sector has been privatised, it was not the Nigerian government’s fault if citizens fail to enjoy stable electricity supply The minister also denied that he once said a serious government would fix power sector challenges within six months. He challenged anyone to produce any video where he made such a comment. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/322657-some-nigerian-states-now-enjoy-almost-24-hours-power-supply-fashola.html

Fred Itua, Abuja Over 100,000 aggrieved corps members who served as ad-hoc staff in the recently conducted general elections have dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court, over unpaid N7 billion allowances. The case is currently before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Gwagwalada. According to the aggrieved corps members, INEC has refused to pay them following the postponement of the February 16 presidential and National Assembly elections, despite a series of petitions addressed to the commission. In the court paper filed on behalf of one Ifemenam Ozioma and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) ad hoc staff, lawyer to the plaintiff, Amobi Nzelu, said INEC had deliberately refused to pay each staff N15,000 which it initially agreed to pay to the claimant. Briefing newsmen, Nzelu said: “I have the full authority and consent of my principal as well as the plaintiff and those she is representing to depose to the affidavit. By virtue of my position, I am very conversant with the facts of this case. “On the 20th day of February 2019, I wrote a demand letter to the INEC, demanding on behalf of the ad-hoc staff payment of both the stimulation/induction course allowance of N8,000 and N15,000 for the elections.” https://www.sunnewsonline.com/corps-members-adhoc-staff-drag-inec-to-court-over-n7bn-unpaid-allowances/

Godwin Tsa, Abuja The Code of Conduct Tribunal has reserved ruling on two applications brought by suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen to the day of its final judgment on his case. In the first application, Justice Onnoghen asked the Conduct of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to quash the six-count charge against him and allow the National Judicial Council (NJC) to deal with the issue. While Onnoghen in his second application asked the Chairman of the Tribunal, Danladi Umar, and another member of the Tribunal to recuse themselves from his trial on alleged likelihood of bias. However, Chairman of the Tribunal, Danladi Umar in his ruling, ordered that ruling on the two applications would be delivered alongside the final judgment. Umar, who said the tribunal is determined to hear the case expeditiously, relied on the provisions of section 296 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015 which permits rulings on interlocutory objections to be given alongside the final judgment. The Federal Government had in the charge marked CCT/ABJ/01/2019 alleged that Onnoghen failed to declare his assets as prescribed by law, and that he had maintained undisclosed foreign bank accounts. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/breaking-tribunal-reserves-ruling-on-onnoghens-application-till-final-judgment/

Rabiu Bichi Chairman, Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to declare the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Abba Kabir winner to avoid eruption of violence. The PDP chairman made the warning on Monday while briefing newsmen on the suspension of the governorship election result collation by the INEC. According to Bichi, “the election has been won by our candidate therefore the INEC should declare our candidate as the winner because we have scored the highest votes. “We have no problems with the recalling of the Nassarawa results, but we should be declared winners with the already results at hand. “If you declare us winner, and later you don’t get the results for Nassarawa you can go for supplementary elections, but you should just declare us winners final.’’ Bichi said the INEC had set a bad precedence adding that it should give the party its mandate to avoid problems. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the electoral body had suspended the collation of the results at the early hours of Monday due to security challenges at the Nasarawa Local Government collation centre. NAN also recalled that the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), in Kano announced that some hoodlums attacked the centre, disrupted the collation and tore the result sheet. According to him, the commission will re-generate the results from its primary and secondary data base and verify its authenticity with the party agents. Arabi-Shehu had emphasised his assurances of bringing out the final results from Nassarawa Local Government to declare the winner of the elections. The INEC commissioner assured the political parties and people of the state that nobody would temper with the original results stored in its database. “Our Primary and Secondary Sources entered in 10 wards of the Nassarawa local government results. “Therefore, I assure you that the results are intact and we are going to recall them and in the presence of party agents announce them,” he assured. BBC An Ethiopian Airlines jet has crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa, killing all on board, the airline says. It said 149 passengers and eight crew members were believed to be on flight ET302 from the Ethiopian capital to Nairobi in Kenya. The airline added that there were 33 different nationalities on board. The crash happened at 08.44 local time, six minutes after the months-old Boeing 737 Max-8 took off. It is not yet clear what caused the accident. Eight Chinese nationals were on board the crashed Ethiopian Airlines flight, Chinese state media report. Earlier, the airline said all the 149 passengers and eight crew believed to be on the flight, from 33 nationalities, died in the Sunday morning crash. Our colleague Jibat Tamirat from BBC Amharic has just spoken with a man, Bekele Gutema, who says he was near the crash site around the town of Bishoftu, which is 60km (37 miles) south-east of the capital. The eye witness said there was a blast and intense fire as the aircraft hit the ground. He says: “The blast and the fire were so strong that we couldn’t get near it. Everything is burnt down. The firefighters arrived around 11 and the crash happened around 8. There are four helicopters at the scene now. No one will survive.” First word of the crash came when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his “deepest condolences” on Twitter. Boeing, the company that built the aeroplane, said in a tweet that it was “closely monitoring the situation”. Its 737 Max-8 aircraft is relatively new to the skies, having been launched in 2016. It was added to the Ethiopian Airlines fleet in July last year. Another plane of the same model was involved in a crash five months ago, when a Lion Air flight crashed into the sea near Indonesia with nearly 190 people on board. The Kenyan government is “supporting” the Ethiopian authorities following the crash, the country’s Transport Secretary has said. James Wainaina Macharia said support centres had been set up near Jomo Kenyatta airport. He also called for “highest level of privacy” for the family and friends of those feared to have been on board the flight. Kenya has set up a hotline for those whose family and friends may have been on the flight: (+254)733666066. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/ethiopian-airlines-no-survivors-on-crashed-boeing-737/
