Health › Nigeria's Coronavirus Index Patient Discharged After Testing Negative by LosC(op): 1:03am On Mar 21, 2020 |
The Italian man who arrived Nigeria with the deadly COVID-19 has been discharged after testing negative for the virus. The Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed his joy over the goodnews and he equally disclosed this on Friday night via his twitter page:As the COVID-19 Incident Commander for Lagos, I am glad to inform you that the index case; the Italian gentleman is now negative.
Through a combined effort of Lagos, Ogun State and Fed Health Authorities, we were able to limit the transmission of the virus to a single contact.
This involved aggressive contact tracing and containment strategies. However we now have several new imported cases and we hope we can apply the same contact tracing strategy along with social distancing to slow down the outbreak which may be brewing from these new cases.
The index patient consented to donating one unit of white blood (plasma) before he was discharged today. The blood plasma is rich in antibody proteins that target #COVID19 virus.
The white blood plasma is frozen in our Bio-bank and will be useful in handling new cases.
The blood plasma will be beneficial for the treatment of new patients in the absence of a defined therapeutic drug for #COVID19 yet.
The patient appreciated the exceptional care and support given to him by staff of the infectious Disease Hospital,Yaba and all members of the EOC. The EOC team was extremely happy to bid the patient farewell.
Once again, we will like to convey the enthusiasm of the team to do the very best possible in handling incidents of #COVID19. https://twitter.com/jidesanwoolu/status/1241118189494337537?s=19

Health › COVID-19: I’m In Commitment To Protecting Nigerians From Coronavirus – Buhari by LosC(op): 6:02pm On Mar 20, 2020 |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday assured that his administration was committed to protecting Nigerians from the scourge of Coronavirus.
Buhari made the remark while receiving the management of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and was contained in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu.
According to Buhari: “I am pleased that you are working with the Ministry of Health on protecting our citizens from Covid-19 virus.
“You must work to guarantee the safety and security of our pilgrims. As a government, this is now a key priority for us. I therefore enjoin you to ensure that adequate medical provisions and other welfare requirements are afforded our pilgrims.”
Buhari also expressed his delight with the operations of the Commission especially, the reduction to up to 15 per cent in Hajj fares.
“I am pleased to hear of the progress you have made thus far, especially in reducing Hajj fares by up to 15 per cent. I am also impressed that you are still working to further bring down the cost next year. This is commendable now especially with the recent global events that have impacted on the economy. Such savings will be timely and most welcome to the pilgrims as well as to Nigeria’s economy,”he said.
The President, however, cautioned NAHCON against sacrificing quality for safety and comfort of pilgrims.
“However, as you assess and reduce these costs, you must ensure that quality service and comfort are provided for our pilgrims as these are the core mandates of your Commission and must remain your primary goal,” he said.
Recall that Buhari had yesterday urged Nigerians not to panic but to take precaution, following the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country . https://dailypost.ng/2020/03/20/covid-19-im-commitment-to-protecting-nigerians-from-coronavirus-buhari/Lalasticlala Mynd44

Health › Coronavirus: NAFDAC Approves Production Of Chloroquine For Clinical Trials by LosC(op): 3:08pm On Mar 20, 2020 |
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has approved the production of Chloroquine for clinical trials in tackling COVID-19.
Director-General of the agency, Mojisola Adeyeye, made the announcement on Friday at the NAFDAC headquarters in Lagos.
She, however, pointed out that NAFDAC is not approving Chloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19 but for clinical trials to find treatment for the virus.
“In the case of Chloroquine, it has been demonstrated in the literature and with clinical research which is still ongoing, that Chloroquine is superior to the Placebo.
“NAFDAC is not approving Chloroquine as a product that has can be used for Coronavirus because there is no submission to us for registration but because it is under clinical trials, NAFDAC approves medicines meant for clinical trials.
“Therefore the medicine is being approved just for the clinical trials,” Adeyeye said.
She, therefore, called on experts and researchers that are interested in doing a clinical trial on Chloroquine to approach approved outlets, adding that a drug company has been given an approval to produce chloroquine in batches
“Right now, we have asked one company to make a batch of Chloroquine for the purpose of clinical trial,” Adeyeye added.
The NAFDAC DG also urged Nigerians not to use Chloroquine as anti-malaria.
“Nobody should use chloroquine as anti-malaria because of the resistance that has been proven to develop in the past after the use of chloroquine in the population. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/03/20/breaking-coronavirus-nafdac-approves-production-of-chloroquine-for-clinical-trial/

Politics › Coronavirus: Court Rejects Total Border Shutdown Request by LosC(op): 2:38pm On Mar 20, 2020 |
A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, rejected an application to compel the Federal Government to totally bar entry into the country from the US, Iran and China.
Justice Inyang Ekwo refused the ex parte motion filed by an Abuja-based lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi.
He ordered the applicant to put the respondent on notice.
The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) is the only respondent in the suit.
In the ex parte motion rejected by the court, the applicant stated that coronavirus had killed thousands of people around the world and still spreading like a wildfire.
The motion was brought pursuant to sections 33 (2), 36, 46 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Order 2 Rules 1-5 and Order 4 Rule 1 of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement) Procedure Rules 2009 and under the inherent jurisdiction of the court.
Jideobi urged the court to grant an interim order barring all entry of all persons by air, land or sea pending hearing and determination of the originating motion.
He also sought a mandatory order of the court directing that the order prayed for and granted be served on the respondent, who shall ensure that the Federal Government of Nigeria [through all responsible Ministries, Departments, and Agencies] implements same within 48hrs of the order being served on the AGF.
He also prayed for an order setting down the originating motion on notice in the suit for hearing within seven (7) days as envisaged and commanded by Order 4 Rule 1 of the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Rules, 2009 enacted by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and any order the court may deem fit to make.
Jideobi reminded the court that the AGF had initially been served with the substantive application on March 13.
The lawyer, in his affidavit in support of the motion, stressed that the application was “propelled by the urgent need to protect the public health of all Nigerians susceptible to infection of the dangerous Coronavirus Disease 2019 [COVID-19] that has been spreading like a wildfire to many parts of the world”.
Although Justice Ekwo did not grant the prayers, he directed him to put the respondent on notice within two days of making the order.
He adjourned the matter for hearing till March 26.
The Federal Government had, on Wednesday, placed a travel restriction on 13 countries over the spread of coronavirus.
The countries are China, Iran, South Korea, Germany, Italy, United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, France, and Japan.”
The country also announced a temporary suspension of the visa-on-arrival policy. https://punchng.com/coronavirus-court-rejects-total-border-shutdown-request/

Health › COVID-19: Don’t Be Afraid, Take Precaution – Buhari Tells Nigerians by LosC(op): 10:19pm On Mar 19, 2020*. Modified: 10:46pm On Mar 19, 2020 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has cautioned against fear and panic over the outbreak of Coronavirus.
Buhari assured that his administration was taking steps to “mitigate the effects on the Nigerian people.”
A statement signed and issued by Buhari’s media aide, Garba Shehu, said: “Nigeria, like every other country around the world, is dealing with the unexpected and unprecedented impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“To prevent the spread of cases imported into Nigeria, the President has already ordered the restrictions of travel from 13 countries, each with more than 1,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19. Government has also suspended visas issued to nationals of these countries. The restriction will take effect from March 20 and will remain until further notice. While Nigeria delights in welcoming the world, the safety and protection of our citizens and land must take priority.
“The various agencies of government including Media owned by the government have embarked on vigorous campaigns promoting hygiene measures. There are, currently, very stringent regimes of checks at the points of air and sea entry into the country. The effort Nigeria is making as is well known, has already received the commendation of the World Health Organisation (WHO).”
Buhari assured Nigerians that government is on top of the situation, stressing that “there is no cause for panic. So far measures put in place are working efficiently. What this country is doing has been recommended as a template.”
“The President trusts the relevant Ministers in his cabinet and the officials of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), who are providing him with constant updates and professional counsel. These officials have a track record of competence,” the statement added . https://dailypost.ng/2020/03/19/covid-19-dont-be-afraid-take-precaution-buhari-tells-nigerians/https://www.facebook.com/1636468759900542/posts/2563498573864218/Lalasticlala Mynd44

Politics › Fashola Clarifies Federal Government’s Stand On Unoccupied Buildings Nationwide by LosC(op): 5:31pm On Mar 17, 2020 |
The Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, has debunked and clarified the news going around that the Federal Government was planning to sell unoccupied houses in Abuja and other cities around the country.
This was the earlier thread on Nairaland: https://www.nairaland.com/5732999/fg-lease-unoccupied-private-houses
Fashola said that what the Government was saying was to encourage big house owners to break them into small units so that people can rent or buy them and start to make income from such houses.
The Minister also urged builders in Nigeria to deploy knowledge and value in building projects, pointing out that it was the combination of both that gives value to the building.
The Minister’s statement was made available on Tuesday by Boade Akinola, Director Press and Public Relations of the Ministry.
“We need to build on our knowledge and value. It is these that give meaning to the bricks and mould we use. If we build without knowledge, it will not last, ” he said.
Fashola made the remarks while receiving the Fellowship Award of the Nigerian Institute of Building in Abuja yesterday.
He also charged builders to build what people can use, instead of building big houses only to be left unused. He said, “Build to the sensitivity of the young generation by building small houses.”
Fashola thanked the institute for the conferment of the award on behalf of the Ministry, saying that it was a recognition of hard work and team spirit.
“On my own, I will do my best to live up to the responsibility of encouraging the building of affordable houses”, he stated.
Earlier, the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Building, Builder Kunle Awobodu said that “The conferment of the prestigious honorary fellowship of the institute is the highest recognition to be bestowed on an individual solely based on performance evaluation of which Fashola is a beneficiary.”
He said that the construction of buildings is a barometer of a thriving economy, adding that what distinguishes a city from a town, and a town from a village is the number and quality of buildings.
Speaking further, he stated that, ”Any nation bereft of building codes is vulnerable to inappropriate building construction.”
He, therefore, called on manufacturers of building materials, artisans and professionals that the culture of doing it right must be embraced.
He enjoined the Minister not to relent in his efforts to ensure the use of Nigeria’s building code to guide building construction in Nigeria. https://dailypost.ng/2020/03/17/fashola-clarifies-federal-governments-stand-on-unoccupied-buildings-in-abuja-others/Lalasticlala Mynd44

Politics › Supreme Court Reserves Ruling On Apc’s Request For Review Of Zamfara Judgment by LosC(op): 12:21pm On Mar 17, 2020 |
The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its ruling on the All Progressives Congress’ application for the review of its judgment which nullified the party’s victories in the general elections held in 2019 in Zamfara State.
A five-man panel of the apex court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, said the date of the ruling would be communicated to the parties.
The CJN made the announcement after the parties to the case concluded their submissions on the application on Tuesday.
The APC and the faction of the party in Zamfara State led by former Governor Abdulaziz Yari had filed the application for the review of the May 24, 2019 judgment, which had nullified their victories at the general elections barely four days to their inauguration.
In the said May 24, 2019 judgment, the Supreme Court had declared that APC failed to conduct valid primaries and, therefore, had no candidates in the 2019 general elections.
The apex court had declared the votes polled by the APC in the elections as wasted.
The Peoples Democratic Party and its candidates, who polled the next highest votes in the elections, were declared the winners of the elections and eventually inaugurated.
The APC’s application for the review of the May 24, 2019 judgment was opposed by Senator Kabiru Marafa-led faction of the party in the state.
APC’s lawyer, Chief Robert Clarke (SAN), on Tuesday urged the court to grant his clients’ application by setting aside the consequential order which directed that the candidates with the next highest votes be sworn in.
He urged the apex court to order the APC to conduct fresh primaries. https://punchng.com/breaking-supreme-court-reserves-ruling-on-apcs-request-for-review-of-zamfara-judgment/

The Federal Government says it has no plans to impose travel restrictions on visitors from countries where coronavirus continues to spread rapidly.
However, Nigeria has decided to screen visitors entering the country from China (where the disease originated last year), Japan, Iran, Italy , Germany, France, South Korea and Spain.
The killer disease was brought to Nigeria by an Italian man who arrived in Lagos aboard a Turkish Airlines plane on February 24.
He travelled from Lagos to Ogun State before he was quarantined inthe Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos. There has been other cases of the virus, but they proved negative.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnibe Mamora, said the FG decided to screen visitors from the eight countries after the World Health Organisation declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
The ex-Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker said, “Despite we have not recorded a confirmed COVID-19 case in the last one week in Nigeria, it is important to remember that we are still at high risk like other countries. We will continue to monitor returning travellers that fit our case definition and improve our surveillance, detection and risk communications.
“We have carried out a review of our case definition. We have added three new countries to the existing list of five high-risk countries with widespread community transmission. These are France, Germany and Spain. Therefore, eight countries are on our priority list – China, Japan, Iran, Italy, Republic of Korea, France and Germany.
“Travellers from these eight countries will undertake secondary screening at the point of entry. They are also advised to self-isolate for 14 days on entry.”
He said between January 7 and March 15 48 people who had contact with the Italian were screened for coronavirus in Edo, Lagos, Ogun, Yobe, Rivers, Kano, Enugu states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Mamora added, “Forty-seven people have tested negative and have been cleared. One was positive (after contact with the index case) and one result is pending. There has been no death.
“The index case is clinically stable and has improved greatly. https://punchng.com/no-stopping-chinese-italians-others-from-visiting-nigeria-fg/
