Rape is not a good thing to go through it is really traumatic and affect the individual mentally. Some cases of rape were not the victim fault like the case of a 73 years old Indian rev sister who was raped by five men who robbed their convent/school. While some case could have been avoided. My concern with rape in Nigeria and the world is that those that perpetrate such act should be punished. I agree with you to an extent that some lady put themselve in harm way like recently a friend of mine invited a friend he knew from facebook and she came all the way from her state to Lagos. Atleast, my friend was the good type who even refuse sex, but what if she had visited a psycho and she was raped. In as much as rape is bad, they say prevention is better than cure.

during the last yuletide, there was street jamz organised by guys in my estate, d next morning we learnt a girl was raped around 3am, we the residents had to invite the police to arrest the organisers and deal with them, the question on peoples lips was why should a lady be out there with drunks and low lifers knowing the kind of society we find ourself. We ve banned street jamz in our estate now to prevent future occurrence

Rape is a criminal offence. Simple. If a girl decides to dress sexual, should she be raped? Have you read about pregnant women being raped? Toddlers being raped? Dear OP, you mean well with your post, but it's lopsided.

The cause of rape is never the victims fault.

I never blamed the victim rather there are societal problems which if not nip in the bud will escalate this rape crises. We can continue to send sex offenders to prison but if somethings that promotes it are still there then we are in for another crises. Rape is evil and its never the victims fault.

I've been watching the topics that hit FP for the past two weeks and I can say that Rape cases has been so common that it rivals GEJ/GMB topics for news. I'm taken aback with the way some people regard rape.
I will be writing my own experience about rape but I first I want us to understand RAPE and its causes.

According to Wikipedia the term rape originates in the Latin word rapere, "to snatch, to grab, to carry off."
Rape is sexual assault involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration perpetrated against a person without their consent. The act may be carried out through physical force, coercion, abuse of authority or against a person who is incapable of valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, or below the legal age of consent.

In Nigeria, there has been a high rate of rape cases and it has become one of the most endemic social vices destroying the fabric of our society. There are a number of cases where minors and married women are sexually assaulted which makes rapes not restricted to single ladies only. What things have led people to see sex as an all comers affair and a means to satisfy their lust?  

Causes of rape
1. Scanty dressing/indecent and nude dress sense
When you wear a skirt or dress that makes someone think the tailor did not have enough fabric/material to complete the cloth, and then you pass through risky places like alleys with drunkards, what do you expect? To be given a medal?

2. Watching porn and some movies
This raises adrenaline and sends a message to the brain to do what the eyes just saw. Some movies have rape scenes that might get engrossed in a child’s or grown up’s mind such that they think it’s cool.

3. Cults and rituals
In our own Naija, women are raped to be initiated into cults. Some men might also rape for ritual purposes. In such cases, they may be given a substance to rub on their John Thomas before doing the deed. This is believed to bring good luck or transfer the lady’s destiny to the man.

4. Being alone in the dark or in a guy’s room
Do I need to tell you that the “devil” likes darkness? Ladies are generally vulnerable in the dark as the man can do whatever he wants then walk away without being known. Some guys also believe that when you visit them alone you have the intention of being *serviced*.  Or when you are there, konji might catch him and he fails to control himself.

5. Immoral lyrics from artistes and drug abuse
When I listen to some lyrics by some artists, I shake my head. They glorify immoral acts and it induces the youth to cash in and have their uncouth sexual gratification.

Recommendations
1. Dress decently: Know your location and where you are going. When going to the mall, you can wear even bikini sef.  When passing through places with idle men or drunkards, do it at your risk. Don’t say I didn’t warn/advice you.

2. Don’t walk alone at night. Am not saying
ladies have no freedom o! Prevention is better than cure.

3. Be careful when visiting a guy you don’t know well in his house.

4. The security agencies need to do more by prosecuting rape offenders and rape victims should be protected because of how the society views victims.
5. The National Assembly need to make law to make rape a punishment with life imprisonment to deter offenders

We need to stand up and condemn any act of sexual assault on the female sex.
