Politics / Sultan Seeks Amnesty For Boko Haram Members by lovethokoh: 8:14am On Mar 06, 2013
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar III, on Tuesday asked President Goodluck Jonathan to grant members of the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram , “total amnesty” for the sake of peace in the country.

Abubakar, who by his position as Sultan, is the spiritual head of Nigerian Muslims, argued that a presidential amnesty to even one member of the sect, could make others to lay down their arms for peace to reign in the nation.

Blaming the security challenges confronting the country on injustice “meted out to the people,” he said the muslim community in Nigeria was concerned about the spate of bombings and killings by Boko Haram members, especially in the North.

Abubakar spoke at the meeting of the Central Council of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam in Kaduna.

He said as Jonathan prepares to visit Maiduguri, Borno State, where the sect has its root, he should consider the amnesty option as a surest way to make peace reign once again in the country.

“Ours is to advise and we will continue advising the government. If they do what they are supposed to do, that would be fine,” he said, adding that one of the primary duties of government was to ensure the protection of the citizenry.

But the Christian Association of Nigeria flayed the call by the Sultan, saying it was an indication that he knows the members of Boko Haram.

“Maybe the Sultan knows the Boko Haram members. If he is seeking amnesty for them, it shows that he knows them, because you cannot call for amnesty for people you don’t know,” the General Secretary of CAN, Dr. Musa Asake, said in an interview with The PUNCH.

Asake added, “All we have been asking is: who are these people? They are faceless people but if someone is calling for amnesty for them, it shows that such a person knows them and if he knows them and calling for amnesty, then there is a problem.

“If the Sultan knows the Boko Haram members, is he saying that Boko Haram members are fighting a just cause? Will they actually receive the amnesty wherever they are? Are they going to accept the amnesty since we don’t really know them? If we get answers to the above, CAN will be able to make further comment.”

Also, a CAN group in the North, operating under the aegis of “Tarayar Ekklisiyar Kristi A Nijeriya,” said the Sultan’s call should be treated with all seriousness.

The spokesperson for the President of TEKAN, Mr. Sunny Oibe, said, “If these Boko Haram members are faceless and now the Sultan of Sokoto is suggesting amnesty for them, it therefore means that he knows the people all these while but has refused to come out and tell us the truth. So, we now know who the Boko Haram members are and the Federal Government should be able to take a decisive action against them.

“If he doesn’t know them, how can he call for amnesty? The government should descend on all those who have been shielding Boko Haram members but now coming out stylishly to demand amnesty. The Federal Government now knows them and they know what to do with them, instead of playing a hypocritical game.”

The Sultan had also at the meeting debunked insinuations in some quarters that leaders, especially religious leaders, were not doing enough to halt the crises in the North and other parts of the country.

He claimed that religious leaders, especially Muslim leaders, had done well and would continue to call on the government to be just in whatever they did.

Abubakar said, “My dear brothers and sisters, we are facing a lot of challenges in this country and as Muslims, we owe it as a duty to everybody to ensure that we contribute positively to the peace and stability of this country.

“We have been talking and will continue talking. We will not get tired of talking until the Almighty Allah takes us away. Because we believe that it is only when we dialogue that issues will become clearer. I believe we are all patriotic; we all love ourselves and we all love our neighbours as Almighty Allah says.

“As Muslim leaders, we are very concerned and very worried about the way things are going on, especially the insecurity issue in this country. We have problem in the North; we have in the South -East; we have in the South- West and in the South – South and it remains the duty of the government to protect all of us.

“We have been hearing about terrorism everywhere and every day, I want to use this opportunity to say that we have heard in the news that Mr. President will be visiting Maiduguri in a couple of days.

“We want to use this opportunity to call on the government, especially Mr. President, to see how he can declare total amnesty for all combatants without thinking twice; that will make any other person who picks up arms to be termed as a criminal. If the amnesty is declared, the majority of those young men running would come out and embrace that amnesty and some of them have already come out because we have heard some of the stories in the newspapers.

“Even if it is one person and he denounces terrorism, it is the duty of the government to accept that one person and see how he can be used to reach others. Whether it is true or not, the government should accept that person first, evaluate him and see whether he is genuine or fake.

“On the accusation that we are not doing anything as leaders in the North, we have done a lot more than what any other person has done and I want to commend all of you for what you have been doing and we will continue to do so despite criticisms.

“We will continue to call on the government to be just in whatever they do because the bottom line of the problem facing us has been injustice meted out to people who are not supposed to. By the grace of God, we will continue talking to the government.”

The Sultan advised Muslim leaders not to propagate falsehood about polio since they knew next to nothing about the disease. He lamented that polio had remained a disturbing problem in the North, more so, when it had been eradicated in other climes.

Abubakar said, “We must never propagate falsehood about something if we don’t know as Muslim leaders; we should not come up with issues on the authenticity or otherwise of any drug.

“This issue of polio is disturbing us. Polio has been eradicated except us in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and we want to be out of the group by the grace of God this year ending. We will show our total commitment to polio eradication in Nigeria and we will continue to work with government at all levels to ensure polio is eradicated in this country.”

During the meeting, Kaduna State Governor Mukhtar Yero stressed the need for peaceful coexistence among Nigerians irrespective of their religions and urged Muslim leaders to preach peace always.

He also called on Muslim leaders to support his administration in ensuring that the state and the entire country remained peaceful and stable “for us to carry out the transformation agenda which we have mapped out for the benefit of our people.”

“As leaders, you should always preach to your followers on the need for peaceful co-existence with adherents of other religions. Our noble Prophet Muhammad lived peacefully during his lifetime with people of other faiths. He preached peace and lived in peace; it is therefore obligatory on all of us to live by his teachings and deeds,” the governor said.

Also, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Mohammed Pate, said the Federal Government was committed to the eradication of polio, adding that about 98 per cent of children affected by the disease in the country were Muslims.

Pate noted that the few areas where the virus had continued to occur were places where people, for one reason or the other, resisted the immunisation of their children.

He said, “We (Federal Government) have done all we could with the state and local governments and we believe the media has a role to play in educating members of the public on the need for immunisation.

“Mr. President is committed to this fight and eradicating all these diseases among our children and women and we are fighting to achieve that. Those that polio are presently affecting in this country, about 98 per cent of them have Muslim names.”

Politics / Nigeria Is The World Capital For Recycling Leaders And Politicians by lovethokoh: 11:24pm On Feb 25, 2013
NIGERIA WORLD RECYCLE CAPITAL

When my friend forwarded this piece to me that he found on Nairaland, I realized why I had unknowingly signed up as a member of the SNP Youth party.

In 1979, Bamanga Tukur was the Governor of the defunct Gongola State (now Adamawa & Taraba) and 33 years after he is today the Chairman of the ruling Party; The PDP; Dr. Bello Halliru was commissioner in the Old Sokoto State (now Sokoto, Kebbi & Zamfara) and 33 years after he is today Minister of Defence; Major General David Mark (rtd) was the military governor of Niger State in 1984 and 28 years after he is today the Senate President;Gov. Murtala Nyako was the governor of Niger State in 1976 and 36 years after he is today the Governor of Adamawa State; Ogbonnaya Onu was governor of Abia State in 1992 and 20 years after he is today the National Chairman of ANPP; Gov. David Jonah Jang was the governor of Benue State in 1985 and 27 years after he is today the governor of plateau state; and Martins Elechi the Ebonyi State Governor is over 80 years old! Only in Nigeria is this possible, where the youth of today have no hope into the future! Where do we go from here?

People Deceive people (****), 1985, IBB was the president of Nigeria and our teachers told us that Buhari was the former Head of state..Our teacher also called us the leaders of tomorrow..27 years later, IBB and Buhari are still contesting for President.. Its either our teacher lied to us about being the leaders of tomorrow..Or tomorrow is yet to come.. Who’s fooling who?Let’s stand and fight for our right ‘cuz we are the leaders of Today… Pls let all youth form alliance together and fight for the unborn. We can’t continue like this. Pass it to everyone if u believe in the NIGERIA DREAM… Note: Don’t Just Get involved in Politics, let’s Live d Dream and Make it Real… #Yes We Can!!!

Yes, that is our beloved Nigeria, but the unbelievable tale above is not even the half of it. Nigeria was ruled by general Obasanjo in 1976 when he ruled for 3 years, and then, guess what? Nigeria was so defunct of viable’s, or better put, the coalition of elder politicians who rule Nigeria had no ‘better’ choice than to return same Obasanjo to power again in 1999 to again rule Nigeria till 2007! Little surprise, OBJ graduated Adbusalam, so Abdusalam returns the favor.

It beats the imagination how Nigerians allow these things happen to ourselves. Are our youth, the teaming 100 million of us, so prosaic, we continue to allow the same people who wrecked and keep ruining us, determine our fate and recycle their idea-vacuous cronies into all offices?

Musa Yaradua, Nigeria’s 13th head of state was a member of the 1988 Constituent Assembly. He was also member of the party’s National Caucus and the SDP State Secretary in Katsina. In 1991 he contested the Governorship election of the state.

Buhari contested for president again in 2011, and still promised to contest in 2015 when he will be 72 years old! This clearly indicates one thing. Unlike G. W. Bush senior who at least trusted his son and supported his candidacy, our Buhari can not even offer his son or daughter and the product of his nurturing for the top job. No! He campaigns for himself over and over. What does this say about how the elder generation rejects capacitating the youth with office?

Nigeria’s youth must be blamed and no one else. All we do and think of is Man-U, Arsenal, Arsenal, Barcelona. The youth must truly be weak and bereft of aspiration. We youth must love fighting and killing each other as hired political thugs and suffering and smiling as our hopes and aspirations to live decent, endowed lives as human beings are continuously trashed by the recycled goons whose best achievements over the decades are as Wole Soyinka described: “moral insolvency, stagnation in national development and increasing societal decay.”

Our existing political platforms are vestiges of the old colonial divide and rule, exploitation mentality. Like the black hole of Calcutta, anyone that is a part of them or comes close, becomes a chronically filthy nidus of deadly germs of corruption and fountain of inebriation.

The philosopher Plato said- The punishment which the wise suffer who refuse to take part in the government, is to live under the government of worse men.

The SovereignNationalParty.com is a youth coordinated platform upon which our best new generation candidates will emerge and be chosen by us to contest in all future elections.

I am not into politics or a politician, but I am a member of the www.SovereignNationalParty.com. I have declared my full independence from the old way of things. I believe every youth should come together now on this single platform and win or lose, let it be known that we have departed from the old way of things.

I am intelligent.
I am capable.
I am ambitious.
I am courageous.
I believe that corruption is a fancy word for thief.
And I can damn well lead a council, state and Nation better than these old fellows.
What about you?
Fashion / Reasons Why Our Women, Ladies Or Girls Dress Indecently by lovethokoh: 9:25pm On Feb 25, 2013
These are the reasons why our women, ladies or girls dress indecently to any place including church services these days.

Indecent dressing is now so common in churches, offices, campuses and every other gathering in this time because our generation have a huge problem caused by phrases like :

"Let them be"
"Leave them alone"
"Look who's talking"
"Live and let live"
"You can't judge me"
"Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion"
Etc

These above phrases have eaten so deep into our generation that you cannot condemn any wrongs again in our time,if you do,you would only be repaid with curses, hatred and condemnation.

In those days, morals were even more of importance than the bible verses, but nowadays, these generation lacks a whole lot of morals that they continuously and unshamefully request for a bible verse to be able to know their rights from wrongs.

When the society is sick, its products become rotten.

NORTHERN elders yesterday rose from a three-day summit in Kano Government House with far-reaching decisions, including a call on the Federal Government to grant amnesty to Boko Haram sect members.
They urged the government to initiate a restoration, reformation and rehabilitation programme that would reintegrate demilitarised Boko Haram sect members into the society.
According to them, the type of amnesty that ended militants’ unrest in the Niger Delta region would be suitable in the North.
The elders also identified widespread insecurity, breakdown of the educational system, massive illiteracy and leadership failure as part of the problems of the North.
Specifically, they urged President Goodluck Jonathan to dialogue with the sect and grant its members amnesty just as it was done for restive youths in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
As far as the elders were concerned, President Jonathan, his deputy Namadi Sambo and the 10 Northern governors have not shown enough sympathy for the states under the Boko Haram siege.
The positions of the elders were contained in a communiqué issued after a three-day summit organised by Northern Development Focus Initiative (NDFI) at the Kano Government House. The curtain dropped yesterday on the summit.

They also advocated death penalty or life imprisonment for indicted corrupt officials in both public and private sectors, recommending that all stolen assets be forfeited to government.
Indicted public officials should be suspended from office pending the outcome of investigation, they said.
Signed by Alhaji Usman Farouk, a former governor of Northwestern State and Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar, chairman and secretary of the NDFI respectively, the communiqué reads: “Education has collapsed to the extent that over 70 per cent of children of school-going age are not attending school.”

The elders regretted the lack of avenues for gainful employment for teeming youths and noted the concerns and fears of youths for the survival of the region and that of the country.
They blamed rising insecurity and ethno-religious crises on government’s failure to rise to the challenge.
According to the communiqué, attitudes of northern elite and leaders, lack of synergy due to failure of elected representatives to interface with the executive to develop new policies have been parts of the problems bedeviling the North.
It reads: “Northern states and the Federal Government should institute compulsory and free education at the primary and secondary school levels for all school-age children and introduce a free pupils feeding programme like Kano State. Governors of the North should increase budgetary allocation to the educational sector to 30 per cent.
“Since security is the responsibility of the Federal Government as enshrined in the Constitution of the Nigeria 1999, all the states affected by security crises in the North should compute all monies expended by them for re-imbursement by the Federal Government.
“A judicial commission of inquiry should be set-up to establish the remote and immediate causes of ethno-religious conflicts and prevalent insurgency.
“All persons identified to be involved in sponsoring, benefitting or involved in all forms of terrorism and insurgency should be prosecuted.
“The Federal Government should set-up a Northern Nigeria Restoration, Reformation and Rehabilitation programme to involve repentant Boko Haram insurgents unconditionally and a special committee of respected northerners should immediately embark on a sympathy and solidarity tour of all states affected by insecurity in the North.”
They also called for a master plan for agricultural revival for the North so as to boost agriculture, create wealth, employment opportunities and develop agro-allied industry.
The summit, which had “Development, peace and unity, as a tool for enhancing socio-economic and political reform in Northern Nigeria”, as its theme, drew political actors in the North ranging from council officials to federal legislators.
The resource persons included former the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the presidential candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2011 election, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Sen. Victor Lar, former Director, of Defence Military Intelligence (DMI), Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Sambo and public affairs analyst, Dr. Tilde.
In attendance were: Niger State Governor and Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum Babangida Aliyu, Gombe House of Assembly Speaker and Chairman of the Northern Speakers’ Congress, former Borno State Governor Muhammadu Goni, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Senator Danjuma Goje and Senator Bukola Saraki.
All the states in the North were also represented.
