She looked away briefly again. 'This morning, she called me and explained that the 'sugar mummy' she meant had nothing to do with intercourse; that she saw you like her own.

Why? Why is mummy taking you like that?
'She said I should take you like a brother. I don't really understand her. Why is she so attached to you?'

It was my turn to look away briefly.

'I guess it's my luck,' I said. 'I often wonder too why your mum is so fond of me, why she has showered so much affection on me.

'What I've gained from her in the last months are enormous. She's the most generous person I've ever seen.'

She suddenly looked relaxed. She smiled. 'Do you have any sexual feelings for her?'

I smiled too. 'I must say she's a very beautiful woman.'

I stared at her. 'You take after. Yes, she's beautiful, but, I don't want her for sexual satisfaction. I love her. I love her for who she is. I don't have any sexual desire for her, really.'

Her smile was warm. 'What about me? What feelings d'you have for me?'

I held her hand. 'I love you, Steph, but it shouldn’t' be the kind of love that happened the other. We should never have done that. Your mum warned me not to do it, but see what happened. I was able to overcome your first temptation because I called on God. I failed the last one because I thought I could handle it by myself.'

'Hmn, you're preaching.'

I laughed shortly. 'Am I? I'm saying the truth. Your mum is right in warning me not to play games with you.

'I should take you and Sophia more as my sisters, and I should see your mum, more as my mum. I think things will go on more smoothly that way. No feelings will be hurt and things will be all right.'

'Does that mean if the love between us is very deep, we can't marry?'

'Marry?' I said it as if I was shocked by the expression. 'It will be better if there's no such thing.'

‘Let me be the brother you don't have, Steph,’ I said. ‘I can assure you that I'll be a good brother to you.'

She made a wry face. 'Brother? That won't be easy for me to accept. It won't be easy for me to forget how you deflowered and made love to me that day. It was the most wonderful experience I've ever had. This last three days were hell for me. Thank God mum explained the relationship better this morning. I love you, Alex.'

'What happened that day was a mistake, Steph. I'm sorry if I've toyed with your emotion. I'm sorry we played that game, please pardon me. Now, let's be like siblings.'

'Did mum really threaten you about our relationship?'

'Yes, she threatened to sack me if I ever touch you again.'

'But, she's taking it too far, isn't she? What's wrong with two adults having consensual sex?'

'In our case, it's not just a matter of two adults doing it. You're like my sister, and that means we committed incest.'

She shook her head. 'Alex, no be me and you commit incest.'

I was surprised. 'So, you could speak pidgin English!'

'Of course. I spent my first sixteen years practically in Lagos.'

'That's good. Now, henceforth, regard me as your big brother. Remember the love I have for you is brotherly love.'

She didn't say anything to that. Rather, she looked at her watch and stood up. 'I guess I'll be going now, brother Alex,' she said smiling, leaving no one in doubt that she was using a big sarcasm.

I sighed and stood up too. 'Did you come with a car or should I take you home?'

'Take me home,' she said. We went outside the eatery to the car park. I sat behind the wheel while she was glued to my side. I drove in silence for a while.

'That your lady, what's her name again?' she suddenly asked.

'Enny,' I replied simply.

'Is she more beautiful than I?'

Now, what kind of question was that? I asked myself.

'The two of you are beautiful,' I answered.

'I know, but who's more beautiful?'

I laughed shortly under my breath. 'I won't answer that.'

At this time, I very much knew there was no need to deny it. I felt deflated. 'I ...I'm sorry, ma'am.'

'You're sorry? Did you say you're sorry? How could you say you're sorry? I thought you have moral principles.'

I got up from the chair and went on my knees. 'I'm sorry, ma'am,' I said. 'It will never happen again.'

There were seconds of silence. '

'You can get up,' she said.

'Thank you, ma'am.' I sat on the chair.

'Now, listen Alex, if this thing should repeat itself again, you're gone from working for me.'

I caught my breath and quickly looked at her.

'Yes, if you sleep with Steph again, it's bye-bye to working for me. Do you understand?'

'Yes, ma'am. It won't happen again ma.'

I would never forget that experience. It was a day of great embarrassment, all because I could not say no to passion.

But what I still didn't understand was why she told her daughter she was my sugar-mum. Of course, I dare not ask her.

A couple of hours later, I decided to call Steph. My phone rang on and on without response. She must still be mad at me that I deceived her.

How wrong she was on that!

Chapter Nine

It was three days later that Steph called my line. I had actually felt relieved that we had parted ways.

It would have been more of divine intervention, for I couldn't have found it easy by myself to cut her off. Although I didn't like the impression she had of me being a liar, I had decided to let the issue go.

So, now that she was calling, I felt I would use the opportunity to assert my innocence on that.

'We've got to talk,' she said tersely. 'Where can we meet?

I thought fast. 'There's an eatery close to Tipper garage bus stop.' I mentioned the name. 'Can we meet by five thirty, today?'

She thought briefly. 'Okay.'

The line went dead. No problem, we would talk when we met. I was at the eatery by quarter after five.

I ordered ice cream for myself and sat where I could see the entry/exit door. Not long after, she arrived the place. I waved at her and she came to my table.

'Hello, Steph,' I greeted.

'Hi.'

I motioned her to a seat. 'What can I get you, Steph?'

She shook her head. 'No, nothing. Thanks.'

She looked at me and I could sense some nervousness.

'I want to ask you some questions,' she began. 'I will appreciate very sincere answers.'

I nodded. 'No problem, Steph. I'll answer you sincerely.'

She cleared her throat. 'First, did you and mum ever have sex?'

'What?' I didn't expect the question to be close to this.

'What kind of question is that?'

'Alex, answer it.'

I took a deep breath in. 'No. Nothing like that. That's the gospel truth.'

She looked away briefly. Did she believe me this time around?

'So, what kind of game are the two of you playing?'

'Game?' I shook my head. 'I'm not playing any game with her.'

She looked away briefly again. 'This morning, she called me and explained that the 'sugar mummy' she meant had nothing to do with intercourse; that she saw you like her own. Why? Why is mummy taking you like that?

'Please, Cynthia, I need your help.'

Despite the fact that he was very angry at the role she played in causing schism between him and Maggie, he had decided to play it cool and calm. He realized that the same Cynthia can be used to rectify the wrongs.

Cynthia became alert. 'How can I be of help to you, Mr. Irabor?'

'Good. Let's meet at my pharmaceutical store. The one at Ogunlana Drive.'

There was a long pause from her.

'Listen, Cynthia. I'm going to compensate you for this. I'm going to pay you for your time and energy. Trust me.'

'Okay,' she finally agreed. 'What time?'

'Let's say by eleven.'

'Alright.'

She came around few minutes after eleven, and she was ushered to his small office. He made sure he welcomed her with a smile, although inwardly, he felt no mirth.

'What kind I offer you, Cynthia?' he asked.

'Malt drinks,' she said.

Pronto, he asked his sales girl to get the drinks. He allowed a couple of minutes to take it before clearing his throat.

'Now, dear Cynthia, my reason for asking you to come here is simple,' he began. 'The call made to Maggie that you spent the night with me has caused an eternal damage, as she has cut off relationship with me and has got herself a new man.'

Was that true? She asked in her mind. Had her action brought such a serious reprisal? Inwardly, she felt some guilt. Maybe she should not have gone to that extent.

'But that one is gone,' he went on. 'The challenge I'm having now is I have serious feelings for her close friend.'

Cynthia clouded her face.

'Now, don't look at me like that. I'm serious. It sounds odd, but that's the feeling I have for her. I love that her friend. I'm ready to marry her, even right away. But she doesn't believe me. She and her friend believe I'm a flirt, a playboy and an unserious guy.

'The help I need from you is I want to take you to her face, and I want you to tell her that you were the one that made that call to Maggie's number that morning. Above all, I want you to tell her the truth that though you slept overnight in my house, there was nothing sexual between us that night. That's all. All i want you to tell her is the truth. No more, no less.'

Cynthia paused in her drinks and was briefly thoughtful.

'I'm sorry, I called Margaret's number that morning.'

Tony felt some triumph. It was the first time Cynthia would be making that admission.

'I didn't know it would bring a serious consequence as this. I did it because I felt scorned by you. I felt I've been treated so badly.'

She shrugged again. 'It's okay, I will follow you to this lady you're talking about and I'll explain to her what really happened.'

Tony felt happy. 'That is good. You just tell her the truth. That is all.'

Jide Balogun was trying to have a warm-up chat with Lara. Since the day she rejected the food he sent a woman to give her, he had felt slighted and had stayed off.

Today, he felt he should call a truce, even though it was all unilateral. He was in her office, trying to start a conversation when she had a male and a female visitor. That ended the almost-monologue conversation.

'Alright, Lara, dear,' he said. 'We will continue the conversation some other time.'

'Alright, Mr. Balogun,' she had replied.

He had emphasized the word, 'dear', while she had emphasized the word, 'Mister'. As soon as she was gone, Lara turned to look at Tony anxiously. 'I hope there's no problem.'

Tony smiled. 'No. Not at all.' He went straight to business. 'The lady with me here is Cynthia. Cynthia, this is Miss Lara, Margaret's friend that I told you about.'

The two ladies nodded at each other.

'Yes,' Tony continued. 'I brought Cynthia here so that she would tell you the whole truth and nothing but the truth as to what happened that day. Cynthia, please, over to you.'

Cynthia cleared her throat and told her story. She said the truth about how Maggie first came in and caught them making love. She also said the truth about how she had gone to Tony's house the following night, only to be told that she was no longer needed in the relationship.

'I felt, scorned and humiliated,' she said. It was that feeling of bitterness that made her to stealthily go inside his bedroom when he was bathing, and making that call to Maggie, though she made it look like she wanted to call a Veronica. Cynthia ended her story by reiterating that all she had said was the truth, and nothing but the truth.'

Lara sighed after the lady had finished her story. 'There are issues, here,' she said. 'Number one, how I'm supposed to know if she indeed was the lady that Maggie saw with you when she visited your house unannounced?'

Tony nodded. 'You have a point there. Please, use your phone to take her picture, and show it to Maggie. I hope she'll be able to recognize her.'

Lara nodded. 'Then, secondly, even if she was the lady, how am I sure you've not given her something to come and be saying all these?'

Cynthia immediately felt insulted. 'Excuse me, what exactly are you insinuating? I won't be so lowly as to do all that!'

She stared at me briefly. 'I need a temporary accommodation. I want to move out of his house.'

I breathed in hard. 'Why don't you tell madam?'

Mandy shook her head. 'I don't want to bother her again. She has helped a lot in the past.'

I nodded. 'So how can I help you?'

'I don't know if I can temporarily stay with you.'

The alarm bell sounded in my head. No way, I didn't want additional trouble.

I shook my head slowly. 'I'm sorry, Mandy.

That will not be possible.' I studied her briefly. 'I have a fiancée. I can't do it.'

'Oh.' She gave a sad smile. 'I think I understand.'

I nodded. 'But I still believe you should let madam know.'

She shrugged and stood up.

Alright. Thanks for your time,' Mandy said.

'Okay, take it easy.' I watched her leave my office. I wished I could help her in another way.

I continued with my work. Few minutes later, Steph called again.

'Hello, dear.'

'Hi. Why didn't you tell me the truth?' Her voice sounded agitated.

'What truth?'

'That you're having an affair with mum.'

'I've told you the truth.'

'No, you did not!' Her voice went up.

I felt exasperated.

'But, Steph, that's the truth.'

'No, it's not. Just a while ago, mummy called me. She said I should leave you alone, 'cos she's your sugar mum.'

I stood up from my seat. 'What!? Are you sure your mummy said that? Listen, I think there's a mix-up somewhere. I think ...'

'I hate liars!' Steph screamed and cut the line.

I remained standing on the same spot, aghast.

Did I hear correctly? Did Steph just tell me that Madam B said she should steer clear of me because she - the madam - was my sugar-mummy?

Oh God! But that was not true, or could Steph be up to another trick?

If madam indeed claimed that, then she had something up her sleeve.

My mind went over the relationship I had with Madam B. I remembered the farthest I went was helping her to massage her back, on her request.

I remembered she also said she had used the sugar mum stuff to test my moral uprightness, and that I had done well.

Why then was she telling her daughter that she was my sugar mummy? I was disturbed about what could be the motive for all these.

Even as I tried to continue with my work, I kept thinking of the incident. I believed it was a mistake to have slept with Steph and I shouldn't have done so, but insinuating that I deceived her to do so would be very untrue.

By nature, I would never fancy the idea of sleeping with mother and daughter. God forbid!

About an hour later when Madam B arrived, I was told she wanted to see me. I stood up immediately and went to her office.

'Good morning, ma'am,'

'Good morning, Alex.' She looked a bit stern. Definitely, something was in the offing. 'Sit down.'

'Thank you, ma'am.' I sat down gingerly.

'Why did you take it upon yourself to flout my directive, Alex?'

I looked at her very briefly, and then looked down. 'I don't understand you, ma'am.'

'Of course, you do. Why did you sleep with Steph?'

I was surprised she would put it straight like that. Did Steph reveal that we did it? If she did not, how did madam know?

My mouth opened but no word came out.

'Don't even try to deny it because I know you did. Why, Alex? Why did you do what I told you not to do?'

It is too early for you to start another relationship.

Be careful.

Grudgingly, she acquiesced. 'I hope you've not come to talk again about that ridiculous thing you said the other time,' she added.

He smiled, opened his big folder and brought a small Bible.

'Lola, listen carefully to me. I'm ready to swear by this Holy Bible that I love you.'

'Oh, you've come again.'

'I need to show you that I'm serious. I need to prove that I'm not a flirt as you think.'

She chuckled. 'So, you think you can deceive me by brandishing the Bible. No way.'

He held the Bible gingerly. 'I'm ready to swear right away.'

'Please, I don't need any swearing. Besides, this is an office, not a place to profess love.'

'If you want me to come to your house and do the swearing there, I'm ready to do so.'

Lara shook her head. 'There's no need for swearing, anywhere. Think of it, Tony, how d'you expect me to believe you? How will any reasonable
person believe what you're saying? You're claiming, love, while obviously, it's lust.'

He nodded, but not in agreement. 'That's why you need to give me a chance to prove that love to you.'

She shook her head too. 'There's nothing to prove. Please, Tony, you have to go now.'

He breathed in deeply and stood up. 'Okay, I'll go. Can I come back to pick you when you close? I'll drive you home. Then, we can chat more.'

'Don't bother to pick me. In addition, there's nothing to chat about.'

'I won't give up, Lara.' He smiled. 'Believe me, the more you act like this, the more I'm convinced that the two of us will make a good couple.'

She nearly laughed, but she only shook her head and withheld her comment.

'So long, Lara.' He waved at her and was gone.

Lara was perplexed. Would a man be doing all these because he desired to sleep with a lady? Would a man go and meet a lady in her office and
say he was ready to swear by the Bible that he was truly in love with that lady? Were there no ladies he could give even half of the gift he
asked her to take and who would be willing to allow him to sleep with them? What happened to the lady Maggie caught him. Couldn't he easily go after such ladies, instead of disturbing the peace of someone like her, Lara?

Lara's mind was busy. Wait a minute, what if what he said was true? What if indeed he had not slept with Cynthia on the day in question? What
if his claim that Cynthia was trying to set him up was true? The last but not the least of them, what if Tony's claim to love her, Lara, was true?
Lara shook her head. It could not be true, she told herself.

The following morning, Tony called Cynthia's line.

'Hello, Cynthia.'

She was surprised at his call. Since the day she had slept on the sofa in his sitting-room, there had been no calls, except when he challenged her on revealing to Maggie that she had slept overnight in his house.

'Hello,' she managed to say.

'Look Cynthia. Let me once again beg for your pardon over how I treated you the other time. Please, forgive me, okay.'

'I've forgotten that issue,' she replied. It was a lie. No one was in doubt that the matter remained very fresh in her mind.

'Please, Cynthia, I need your help.' Despite the fact that he was very angry at the role she played in causing schism between him and Maggie,
he had decided to play it cool and calm. He realized that the same Cynthia can be used to rectify the wrongs.

Cynthia became alert. 'How can I be of help to you, Mr. Irabor?'

Steph was about twenty-three years old, and had spent the last six years basically in the U.S.A. How she had managed to remain a virgin was a mystery.

I parked the car some meters from their house.

'Thanks, Alex, and goodnight.'

'Good night, Steph.'

She gave me a peck and got down from the car.

I drove back home. Now alone, I realized I had behaved so foolishly. How could I allow myself to fall for Steph?

What if madam knew? What if Enny got to know? Had I not been warned not to allow love of the flesh to rule over my reasoning? Oh God, Oh God!

I got to my bedroom, feeling exhausted. I was supposed to be excited, wasn't I? I was supposed to feel fulfilled that I had got the heart of a daughter of the rich and powerful Da Rocha.

But I was not. Images of madam B and Enny alternated in my mind. The two of them accused me of betrayal. Enny was particularly bitter. In my mind, I pleaded and told her I would make amend.

An idea came to my mind.

Why not marry Enny as soon as possible? Why wait for many months? She should welcome the idea, shouldn't she? My mind went to Steph again. She was good, no doubt. But then, she would not be around for long as she would be going back to the States in some weeks' time.

I finally slept off. It was almost six thirty when I woke up. I had to rush to take my bath and to prepare for work.

On my way to work, Staph’s call came through.

'Hello, sweetheart,' she said. As soon as I heard her voice, all my self-recriminations disappeared.

'Hello,' I replied. 'How was your night?'

'Nice. It was nice.'

'How's mummy?'

'She's fine.'

'Good. I'm on my way to work.'

'I'll soon be joining you.'

'You mean you are coming today again - you mean to the office?' I asked.

'Yeah.'

I sighed. 'Alright, see you.'

So, she would be coming around again? Seeing her so close would not help my matter, if I really intended to stop playing games with her, I reasoned. Oh God, help.

I got to the office few minutes to eight, but surprisingly met Mandy there.

'Hello, Mandy. You're early today.'

'Yes. It happens like that once in a while.'

I went to my office and got down to work. Few minutes after I was there, Mandy opened the door.

'Can I come in or are you very busy?' she asked.

'Sure, you can.'

She came in and sat on one of the visitor's seats. It was then I noticed that the left side of her cheek was puffed.

'What happened to you there?' I asked.

She sighed. 'It was my man that hit me.'

'Your man? What happened?'

I could see sadness taking over her pretty face.

'We had an argument and this is the result.'

I shook my head in sympathy.

'Sorry about that.'

I, indeed felt sorry for her. I hate domestic violence or any form of abuse. I believe that no matter what a woman does, the man must never raise his hand up against the woman.

'Sorry,' I said again.

'Thank you.' She sighed again. 'I have a little challenge now.'
