Politics / Muslim-muslim Ticket: Fear Not, Fani-kayode Tells Christians by Loveurneighbour: 1:20pm On Jul 31, 2022
By Idowu Bankole

A former Aviation Minister and APC chieftain, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode (Ajagunla) has urged Nigerian Christians not to be afraid of Islamisation, and marginalization in the national scheme of things in the country as a result of the Muslim-Muslim tickets presented to Nigerians by the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Presidential flag-bearer of the ruling party, APC, had unveiled the former Borno state governor, Kasim Shettima, a northern Muslim, in an elaborate event, weeks ago, which was greeted by much criticisms, especially from the Christian southerners and northern APC Christians leaders, led by former Secretary to the Government of Nigeria, Babachir Lawal and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Right Honourable Yakubu Dogara.

Fani-Kayode, who recently defected to the ruling party form the opposition, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has lent his voice to the APC presidential ticket generating controversies and many critical views from Nigerians.

Fani-Kayode, In a post on his social media page cited examples of how Christian politicians dominated Southwest Nigeria and the Judiciary arm of the Nigerian government.

He said, “Till recently 4 of the 6 South West Governors were Muslim.

“Today all 6 are Christian (Oyetola is out) & EVERY Governor in the South is a Christian.

Again till recently the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and Federal High Court were headed by Muslims.

“Today ALL 3 are headed by Christians. FEAR NOT!”, He wrote

Just yesterday, Vanguard reported that Christian heavyweights in the ruling APC, especially the northern Christian leaders have promised a showdown with the APC leadership, vowing never to support the same faith-ticket presented by the candidate’s party, Bola Tinubu.

Also, the Presidential candidate of the main opposition party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had also criticized the the same faith-ticket presented by the APC. Atiku had described the the ruling party’s ticket as “insensitive to the Nigerian Christians”, a statement that was met with fierce response from the Tinubu’s camp.

Crime / We’re Prepared For Terrorists’ Attack On Lagos – PPRO by Loveurneighbour: 1:12pm On Jul 31, 2022
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has said that the police and other security agencies are prepared for any planned terrorists’ attack on Lagos.

Hundeyin, during a Twitter Space webinar, on Saturday, was responding to questions from our correspondent on reports of a possible planned attack on Lagos by terrorists and the readiness of the police, where he noted that the police were also getting intelligence reports.

The PUNCH had reported, Tuesday, that there were strong indications that two terrorist groups, the Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram, were planning to attack some states in the North-West, North-Central and South-West.

The PUNCH learnt that security agencies had gotten a security report that ISWAP and Boko Haram planned to attack Lagos, Kaduna, Kogi, Katsina and Zamfara states as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

Meanwhile, suspected terrorists had two days later (Thursday) attacked a military checkpoint at Zuma Rock, a border between Niger State and Abuja, the FCT.

The recurring attacks across the country have left Nigerians worried about the safety of their lives, their relatives and property.

Reacting to this, Hundeyin said, “We are working seriously with other security agencies. Many times that I am with the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, the Department of State Services keeps sending intelligence reports to us.”

He noted that the police were not working in isolation, but rubbing minds with other securities to forestall any attack.

“All resources are available, from human resources to gadgets. Our equipment has been optimally deployed to ensure that we don’t have any attack in Lagos,” the Police Spokesman said.

He noted that the residents in Lagos also needed to assist the police and other security agencies in providing them with timely information on suspicious movements.

“The people also have a role to play by reporting suspicious movements to security agencies. It’s a collective thing.

“On our part, we are not just ignoring it, we are at alert,” he said.

He noted that the CP was engaging all the Area Commanders and the Divisional Police Officers, among others on the matter.

“Most of us have families, and relatives in Lagos, my parents are in Lagos and I know that if I don’t do my job, it’s not just the people out there that will be affected, we (the police) will be affected by this. We’re all Nigerians and we’re together in this,” he added.

Foreign Affairs / Biden Tests Positive Again For COVID-19 by Loveurneighbour: 10:11pm On Jul 30, 2022
US President Joe Biden has tested positive again for Covid-19 after consecutive days of testing negative for the virus.

His physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor disclosed this in a memo shared by the White House.

O’Connor said 79-year-old Biden is experiencing no new symptoms and “continues to feel quite well”.

The doctor said the President will, however, “reinitiate strict isolation procedures”.

Biden, in a tweet, said he was asymptomatic but would isolate “for the safety of everyone around me”.

The President tweeted: “I’m still at work, and will be back on the road soon.”

When he initially tested positive, the 79-year-old United States President, who is fully vaccinated and has received two Covid booster shots, experienced “very mild symptoms.”

A statement from the White House said: “He has begun taking Paxlovid. Consistent with CDC guidelines, he will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time. He has been in contact with members of the White House staff by phone this morning, and will participate in his planned meetings at the White House this morning via phone and Zoom from the residence.

“Consistent with White House protocol for positive COVID cases, which goes above and beyond CDC guidance, he will continue to work in isolation until he tests negative. Once he tests negative, he will return to in-person work.”

The statement added: “Per standard protocol for any positive case at the White House, the White House Medical Unit will inform all close contacts of the President during the day today, including any Members of Congress and any members of the press who interacted with the President during yesterday’s travel. The President’s last previous test for COVID was Tuesday, when he had a negative test result.”

The rebound is expected to clear out in days.

Politics / Death In The Green Chamber: How Many Lawmakers Died In Three Years by Loveurneighbour: 8:15am On Jul 24, 2022
By Abdul Seye

The Ninth House of Representatives is on its final lap as some members prepare for re-election, while some are still facing the reality of the defeat suffered during the primaries.

Although the legislative journey of some members have been cut short by the outcome of the primaries, for a few of them, the cold hand of death ended their legislative and mortal journey. Out of the 360 members that started the journey in June 2019, nine of them have passed on.

Death started knocking on the door even before the swearing-in of members. In March 2019, immediately after the general elections, a member-elect, Garba Butawala, passed away after winning the election to represent Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam federal constituency in Kano State.

The death rate among members has been blamed on different reasons. The spokesperson of the House, Benjamin Kalu blamed it on demands on the lawmakers from Nigerians.

“Whether you want to understand it or not, let the press know this — that the pressure from constituents is killing members of the National Assembly. That is the truth. The pressure is too much,” Kalu had said.

However, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila took a different path in his view about the mortality rate among members.

According to Gbajabiamila, “Beyond the obligations of our office, we have other responsibilities as fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters that require us to take matters of our personal health seriously.”

Two of them died in foreign hospitals, six died in local hospitals and one from a car accident.

Here are the nine lawmakers that have so far died

Jafaru Illiyasu

Illiyasu, who represented Rijau/Magama federal constituency of Niger State, was the first member of the current House of Representatives to kick the bucket.

He died at the Maitama General Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.

Muhammad Adamu Fagenwo

He represented Garki/Babura federal constituency in Jigawa State. He died on the 31st December 2019 in Dubai where he was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness.

Ossy Prestige

The former caucus leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in the House, passed away on the 6th of February, 2021, while on treatment in Germany. He represented Aba North/Aba South in the House before his demise. According to reports, despite the lockdown due to COVID-19 restrictions, he went to London for medical treatment. However, as the situation got worse, he was transferred to Germany where he later died.

Hassan Yuguda-Kila

Yuguda-Kila, the former Chairman House Committee on Customs, represented Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State. He died at the National Hospital in Abuja on the 4th of March, 2021, after a protracted illness.

Sulaiman Lere

Mr Lere represented Lere Federal Constituency of Kaduna State. He died about 2 months after he was sworn in by the House.

After a long fight in the court to regain his mandate, he was sworn in on the 6th of February 2021 and died on the 17th of April 2021.

Haruna Maitala

Maitala died in a very tragic circumstance alongside his son in a ghastly accident along Abuja-Keffi road. The late lawmaker, who represented Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency of Plateau State, was travelling to attend the wedding of his son. He died on the 3rd of April.

Adebayo Omolafe

Mr Omolafe represented Akure North and South federal constituency of Ondo State. He reportedly died at Owo Federal Medical Centre in Ondo State. Omolafe was reported to have slumped in his house and was rushed to the Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on the 16th of August, 2021.

Nse Ekpenyong

Mr Ekpenyong represented Oron Federal Constituency of Akwa-Ibom State and was former PDP Chairman in the State. According to reports, Mr Ekpenyong was not ill but suddenly died at the age of 58 on the 25th of April, 2022.

Jude Ide-Iden

Mr Ide-Iden represented Egor/Ikpoba Okha federal constituency of Edo State before his demise on the 1st of July, 2022. He had won his party’s ticket to seek re-election in the 2023 general elections before his demise.

Politics / 2023: Obi’s Labour Party An Extension Of PDP — Sowore by Loveurneighbour: 7:39am On Jul 11, 2022
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said that the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi are being propelled by forces who were part of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to distract youths of the country.

He also alleged that Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed are being touted by certain kingmakers and former Nigerian leaders, “to cover up the flaws of previous administrations.”

Sowore spoke at the weekend on a private radio station in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State while reacting to questions on the increasing popularity of Obi especially on social media.

According to him, “He is a buzz generated by kingmakers, so that youths would not have a chance to choose the right person again.

“Peter Obi is a product of PDP, his Deputy – a product of PDP. PDP maintained and sustained darkness with 16 billion dollars in 16 years. They have managed to operate under two political parties, they have presented two teams. If PDP loses, they would hope that LP does not lose, so they can maintain their hold on the jugular of this nation.”

The AAC presidential flagbearer also made a commitment to probe past administrations, noting that if loots could be retrieved from late Head of State, Sani Abacha, then living former leaders should be probed too.

“It (probing) is compulsory, these are people who have taken money from the public, we must ask them what they stole and how we can get it back.

“We had a man who was in power between 1993 and 1998, Sani Abacha, We are still getting money from him, so why can’t we get money from them if we are getting money from the dead,” he said.

Politics / Atiku, Ayu Criticised For Shunning Ekiti PDP Campaign by Loveurneighbour: 5:17am On Jun 26, 2022
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, and the party’s presidential candidate for the February 25, 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, have come under criticism by party members and chieftains for failing to go to Ekiti State to campaign for the party’s governorship candidate in the June 18 election.

The party stalwarts said their neglect of the candidate, Bisi Kolawole, contributed to the party’s loss at the poll as well as created a bad impression about the party and its candidate.

Kolawole, who polled 67,457 votes, came third, while Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party came second with 82,211 votes, and the winner, Biodun Oyebanji, of the All Progressives Congress scored 187,057 votes. Not less than 15 political parties partook in the exercise.
Ahead of the election, the party on June 9 constituted an 80-member National Campaign Council, but the council, like Ayu and Atiku, didn’t visit the state to campaign for the candidate.

He added, “Atiku, Ayu and PDP governors left the people of Ekiti, majority of whom supported PDP in the cold. They looked up to these personalities but they never showed up before or during the poll.

“The National Campaign Council constituted by Ayu was put in place just four days before the poll whereas Senator Bola Tinubu was in Ekiti with many APC governors, campaigning for Biodun Oyebanji.

“Now that the chances of PDP winning Ekiti have been thrown out by the Ayu-led national leadership, we need to remind Atiku, Ayu and other today’s leaders of the PDP that the fate of our party in 2023 election now rests on the outcome of Osun State governorship poll.”

However, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees from Oyo State, Dr Saka Balogun, blamed the party’s loss in the election mainly on leadership crisis in Ekiti State, noting however that if all the leaders had worked together, the result would have been different.

Balogun, in an interview with one of our correspondents on Saturday, argued that the former National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, committed some blunders, as applicable to the state by relating with individuals instead of leaders, but that Ayu ratified the blunders.

He said, “In Ekiti State, the problem really has to do with leadership. With all the activities, dynamism, passion and courage which you can identify with former Governor Ayo Fayose, he appeared to be playing the role of a lodestar. Until we are able to resolve the leadership problem in Ekiti, I don’t think we are going anywhere.

“We are divided in Ekiti. How can PDP fail in Ekiti East Local Government Area, where Senator Biodun Olujimi comes from? We succeeded only in Efon Alaaye LGA (where Kolawole hails from). I think what happened was a collective tragedy for the PDP, including myself.”

Politics / Kolade Akinjo: Money Given To Delegates At Party Primaries, An Appetiser by Loveurneighbour: 4:38pm On Jun 19, 2022
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party and member representing the Ilaje/Ese Odo Federal Constituency in Ondo State in the House of Representatives, Kolade Akinjo, tells LEKE BAIYEWU how and why aspirants pay delegates to secure votes at political parties’ primaries

How do you feel about the failure of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to assent to the amended Clause 84(cool of the Electoral Act, 2022 to recognise statutory delegates in the primaries conducted by political parties to choose their candidates for the 2023 general elections?

In any case, the entire document – the entire bill – left us here (National Assembly) and the President even signed the bill to become an Act. Of course, it could not have been the fault of Mr President; it is our (lawmakers’) fault. Laws sometimes need to be explicit. There are different cannons of interpretations in law and literal meaning is quite easy – the way the law is, that is how you interpret it. Under Section 84(cool, we did not do enough as lawmakers. We needed to have explained those that were supposed to categorically be the delegates and there is nothing wrong in listing them out as it ought to have been. We cannot allow people to input in the law, which was not the original meaning. So, the fault is ours. Trying to weave the issue around the President is just not right. But again, since we made a mistake and came back to reflect on that mistake and correct it where necessary, then we also did what we were supposed to do. It is incumbent on the President to look at the general picture in the interest of our democracy to do the needful. And this naturally should not be a big deal.

Do you think having statutory delegates at the primaries would have made a difference at the shadow elections?

Of course! It is just like somebody who is reading with a particular syllabus for a particular examination. You have done well and exhausted the syllabus, but a few days into the examination, the syllabus was changed. There is no doubt that it will become the survival of the fittest. So, there is no way that would not have affected (the primaries), because people were working on the statutory as well as the ad hoc delegates but all of a sudden, it changed to only ad hoc delegates based on the (current) provision of Section 84(cool.

It would have naturally rocked the entire roots and re-election of many members, senators and governors. If care is not taken, the entire ad hoc (delegates) are just a handbag of the leader (of a party) in a particular state. And if he does not like your face, then you are gone. If the governor is the leader of the state, he will just handpick (the delegates). The chairman of the party and the governor, they work together and they will just list whoever they want. In many cases, there was nothing like the election of those ad hoc delegates. They were usually from consensus or powered by the chairman and leaders of a party in a state.

With the recent primaries, do you believe that the governors hijacked the process?

There is no way you can (avoid that). In many of the states, it is usually who they want.

Crime / Any Yahoo Boy Who Kills For Money Will Die This Week’, Pastor Ibiyeomie Declares by Loveurneighbour: 3:02pm On Jun 19, 2022
By Dachen Isaac

The General Overseer of the Salvation Ministry, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has declared instant death for internet fraudsters, popularly called Yahoo Boys, or any ritualist who kills for money, saying they will die this week.

The popular televangelist made this declaration on Sunday morning during a sermon at the church’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

During the sermon, Pastor Ibiyeomie urged the culprits and other Nigerians who harbour thoughts of using another human being for money rituals to refrain from such, saying God has warned against the shedding of innocent blood in the quest for wealth.

"If anybody has used charm to kill someone around you, this week, that person will die. God is saying, “don’t shed blood to get money.’ Stop pounding children, get clean money,” he said.

“Don’t do Yahoo plus. It is demonic. Some people use their mother that gave birth to them, even their relations for money. What kind of money is that? What kind of money will make you see your blood relations dying and you are happy?”

Politics / Army Strength Beefed-up With 5,800 New Recruits, Says COAS by Loveurneighbour: 5:22pm On Jun 12, 2022
Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Faruk Yahaya, has said the 5,800 recruited soldiers would be posted at various theatre operations to tame persistent insecurity bedeviling some parts of the country.

The army chief revealed the plan at the passing-out-parade of the 82 regular recruit intake yesterday in Zaria, Kaduna State.

Yahaya, who was the Special Guest of Honour and Reviewing Officer of the parade, said the exercise aimed to strengthen the Nigeria Army would translate into more food on ground.

He said the new soldiers would be posted to more relevant areas where they are required, warning that “it is a clear message to all criminals, whether they are bandits, kidnappers or terrorists.”

He, therefore, urged the new soldiers to maintain a high standard of professionalism and remain good ambassadors of Depot Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

“As for the passing out recruits, you are all aware, Nigeria is currently facing numerous security challenges such as the activities of Boko Haram terrorists, armed bandits, kidnappers, secessionist agitators and other criminal elements.

“I wish to state that these security challenges can only be surmounted by the collective resolve and effort of every officer and soldier of the Nigerian Army, including those of you passing out today,’’ he said.

Yahaya, therefore, enjoined the new soldiers to apply the mental, physical and moral training acquired over the past few months as well as those “you will be exposed to at your respective units, formations and corps”.

He added that the army expected them to uphold the Nigerian Army Core Values of Loyalty, Selfless Service, Courage, Discipline, Integrity and Respect for Others, which are sacred to all personnel.

“These values along with other cherished ethos of the Nigerian Army, if well imbibed and upheld, will help you attain great heights in your chosen career,” Yahaya said.

The army chief also advised the soldiers on the importance of the Oath of Attestation they have sworn to.

He said: “By this oath you are under obligation to remain loyal to constituted authorities at all times and place the interest of the nation ahead of your personal convictions’’.

He noted that Depot Nigerian Army, since its establishment in 1924, has borne the responsibility of moulding selected able bodied citizens into well trained and disciplined soldiers to meet the manpower demands of the Nigerian Army.

He added the function of moulding selected able bodied citizens into well trained and disciplined soldiers was of utmost importance and remained relevant, considering the numerous security challenges presently bedeviling our great nation.

Yahaya said he was glad to report that Depot Nigerian Army has continued to plan and conduct its training activities in compliance with the Army Headquarters Training Directives.

He said the training was also in cognisance of his vision of having a “professional Nigerian Army ready to accomplish assigned missions within a joint environment in defence of Nigeria”.

The COAS also inaugurated and inspected numerous projects at the Depot NA and Army School of Military Police, Basawa, Zaria.

Politics / June 12:abiola’s Vision Inspired Me To Contest For Presidency, Says Yahaya Bello by Loveurneighbour: 7:16am On Jun 12, 2022
**leads Hafsat Abiola, others for June 12 commemoration in Abuja

Friday Olokor, Abuja

Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, and Director-General of his Presidential Campaign Organisation, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, on Saturday, led various groups of Nigerian women to commemorate the June 12 Democracy Day in honour of late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

Bello, a presidential aspirant in the just concluded primaries of the All Progressives Congress, said the event was held to keep the hope and visions of MKO alive.
The governor said he was excited that almost 30 years after, the vision of MKO Abiola continued to live, saying that was one of the reasons he was determined to contest for the 2023 Presidency.

Bello said, “I was in the secondary school in 1993 when the struggle began and almost 30 years after, we are here to bear the torchlight of that struggle and hence my decision, your decision for Yahaya Bello to venture so that this hope can be rekindled.

“Today, we are commemorating and remembering June 12, championed by our father, our hero, our legend, our icon, Chief MKO Abiola, and Hajiya Kudirat Abiola.

“I appreciate God Almighty and all those who stood firm, saw a vision, sacrificed and are still sacrificing for the cause of democracy in Nigeria.

“I appreciate our President, Muhammadu Buhari and his team who deemed it necessary that after 29 years, our father, Chief MKO Abiola, deserves to be well honoured and decorated posthumously with the highest honour of the land, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

“Chief MKO Abiola represents hope for this country for the current and future generations and that is why I am happy that his prodigies, not only immediate family but all of us are carrying on with that struggle, and by the special grace of God, our struggles shall never be in vain.”

The governor, however, said that the emergence of the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as flagbearer of the party would further bring the vision of MKO Abiola to fruition.

He said that Tinubu was one of those who championed the struggles of June 12 and would not fail in rekindling those hopes and visions.

Bello urged women to give all their support and prayers to Tinubu so that he can emerge as President in the 2023 general elections.

“I am happy and comforted that the winner of that special convention, our leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, won the election, fair and square, and that man is one of the pillars of the struggle for democracy. He was right behind Chief MKO Abiola in that struggle so you can see that our hope is still alive.

“So, I urge each and every one of us here to please give all of your support, prayers and whatever it will take for our leader Bola Ahmed Tinubu to win the general elections,” Bello added.

Abiola-Costello assured Nigerians and women that with Tinubu, a proponent of June 12, as the presidential candidate of the APC, and Bello, also well positioned in the campaigns and government, the dreams of MKO Abiola would be actualised.

Twenty-nine years after June 12, it is still a message of hope. Yesterday (Friday), we had the pleasure of being in the important meeting where His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello, received the presidential flagbearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at our Campaign Secretariat.

“Based on the conversation, there is hope for Nigerian women, there is hope for Nigerian young people, Nigerians with special needs,” Abiola-Costello said.

Crime / Owo Massacre: CAN Calls For Legalisation Of Firearms For Nigerians by Loveurneighbour: 7:07am On Jun 12, 2022
Urges members to suspend vigil

Amotekun mounts surveillance around churches, combs forests

In response to the terror attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State last Sunday, the Christian Association of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to enact a law permitting individuals to carry firearms.

This was as security agencies assured residents of ample security in places of worship.

At least 40 people were confirmed dead in the gruesome attack by gunmen in Owo, last week Sunday.

As a result of the incident, the ancient town of Owo has been mourning while one of our correspondents in Ondo reports that no open religious programme has been held in Owo and Akure since the tragic incident occurred.

The Ondo State chapter of CAN has, however, advised church leaders in Ekiti and neighbouring states to beef up security in worship centres.

The association, in a communiqué, also asked its members to suspend vigil programmes for the time being.

The communiqué made available to Sunday PUNCH was signed by the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Fr. Anselm Ologunwa, Secretary, Very Evang. Amos Olomofe, and the Director of Information and Communications of the association, Mr Daisi Ajayi.

The body said, “The present Nigeria Constitution, which prohibits the use of firearms, should be reviewed, to give room for individuals for self-defence, given the prevailing insecurity situation in the country.”

CAN also said it would support the setting up of vigilance groups in every local government area of the state.

Also, the Chairman of the association in Osun State, Bishop Amos Ogunrinde, said churches had been instructed to engage the services of at least two security operatives per church.

He also said churches that could afford it should buy body scanners, ensuring that people were properly searched.

Ogunrinde said churches with perimeter fences should ensure that entrances were locked immediately service commenced.

On his response to the killing in Owo Catholic Church, the Ekiti State Chairman of CAN, Rev. Fr Peter Olowolafe, said, “We have had a discussion with some of our security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services and they have assured us that there is no need for panic.

“I trust them; they said we should not create unnecessary fear for people. We have discussed with our members that people should be more security conscious and that church leaders should get some security personnel so that there will not be any situation like what happened at Owo last week.”

An Owo town resident, Mrs Olaitan Akindele, said she would stop attending church programmes for some time until the government provides security around worship centres.

“This next Sunday, I will pray and worship God in my house. There is no security anywhere,” she said

Crime / Trainee On Teaching Practice Impregnates 24 Girls, Headmistress And 4 Female Tea by Loveurneighbour: 10:17pm On Jun 05, 2022
By Godwin Fullah

The disturbing and unfortunate news reaching us confirms that, a teacher trainee who is doing his mandatory teaching practice has done the unthinkable.

Ghana Education Service and Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, GTEC rules on Teaching Practice, prohibit student-teachers from misconducting themselves in ways that does not augur well for the smooth running of schools.

To this end, manuals such as Supported Teaching in Schools, National Teaching Council Teacher Engagement, National Teaching Standards etc were developed to guide their Practice.

However, reports reaching us from the Ashanti Region reveals that, a teacher trainee on Teaching Practice in one of the Basic Schools in the Asokore Mampong Municipality has impregnated 24 of his learners.

The said trainee also allegedly impregnates four female teachers and the headmistress in addition. It has been alleged that the teacher trainee is a level 400 student-teacher from a popular College of Education in the Western Region.

The report of the sexual-escaped of the said trainee reached a crescendo when Community members got wind of his amorous relationship with the headmistress, Voltawebpage.com report says. The Asokore Mampong Municipal Police Command were said to have arrested the said trainee after a report was made to them.

Politics / NASS Landlords: Lawmakers Who Have Spent 20 Years In Senate, House Of Reps by Loveurneighbour: 7:06am On Jun 05, 2022
Since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, Nigeria has had four presidents – Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and the incumbent, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Each of the 36 states would also have had at least three governors within the period, but could be more if any of the governors spent only one term of four years. But in the National Assembly – the nation’s bicameral legislature, made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives – some lawmakers seem to be maintaining permanent seats in the chambers.

Interestingly, some of them have been in the parliament since 1999 and will complete their sixth term in 2023. Several members have been in either the House or the Senate or both since 2003, and they would have spent not less than 20 years in 2023 when the 9th Assembly winds down. The members belong to the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. Some of them have also switched parties as part of moves to get re-elected.

Opinions are divided on which is better between having long-serving lawmakers and fresh lawmakers every four years. Some persons have argued that returning members have legislative experience and the institutional memory of parliamentary norms and processes. Those who belong to the former group often cite the example of the United States’ parliaments with many long-serving lawmakers, while those in the latter often argue that the Senate is fast becoming the ‘retirement home’ for former governors and ex-ministers.

Mutu, a typical landlord at the Green Chamber

Representing Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency in Delta State, Nicholas Mutu has been in the House since 1999. He served as the chairman of the House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission between 2009 and 2019 – arguably the longest time a member would head the same committee. Not one of the known names when it comes to debates on motions and bills, documents presented to the House Committee on NDDC by the immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, had indicated that Mutu is a serial contractor to the commission.

While the Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo led committee was investigating mismanagement and fraud in the NDDC, Akpabio had alleged that National Assembly members, especially the previous leadership of the committee, were beneficiaries of contracts from the commission. A list the minister provided showed that Mutu had the highest number of NDDC projects listed against his name.

Lawan: From the green chamber to senate presidency

The incumbent President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has been in the National Assembly since 1999. He was first elected a member of the House where he spent two terms. There he represented Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency in Yobe State. In 2007, he was elected a senator to represent Yobe North Senatorial District and has retained the seat since then. Lawan became the President of the 9th Senate in 2019. Currently, he is seeking to be the President of Nigeria in 2023, which would depend on the outcome of the presidential primary of the APC scheduled for Monday.

Gbajabiamila: From floor member to Speakership

Femi Gbajabiamila is the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, serving his fifth term. He has been in the House since 2003, representing Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos State. The lawmaker was the Minority Leader of the House in the 7th National Assembly, and later Majority Leader in the 8th Assembly after his hope of becoming Speaker was dashed. Gbajabiamila has again secured the ticket of the APC to contest for a sixth term in 2023.

Ndume: Two-term Rep, three-term Senator

Since 2003, Ali Ndume has been in the National Assembly. He first represented Chibok/Damboa/Gwoza Federal Constituency in Borno State for two terms; 2003 to 2011, and was in 2011 elected to represent Borno South Senatorial District at the red chamber, a seat he has kept till date. During his stay in the chamber, Ndume had attempted to be President of the Senate at different times. He was the Majority Leader of the House in the 8th Assembly but was sacked over his political stance against that of the then President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki. Ndume was replaced with Ahmad Lawan, who is now the Senate President.

Ekweremadu: The longest-serving presiding officer

The lawmaker representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, is serving his fifth consecutive term, having been in the Senate since 2003. He attempted to be President of the Senate in 2005 but failed. Senator Ken Nnamani got the position instead. However, Ekweremadu was the Deputy President of the Senate for three consecutive terms – 6th, 7th and 8th, spanning 12 years, a record time as a presiding officer in the National Assembly. The lawmaker had announced his retirement from the Senate in 2023. He joined the governorship race in Enugu but lost the PDP ticket.

Manager: A senator caught on his knees

The Delta South Senatorial District in Delta State has had James Manager as its representative since 2003. The lawmaker may not be returning with the 10th Assembly over his governorship ambition in Delta. A photograph showing Manager on his knees before a former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, an ex-convict and political godfather of the PDP in the state, had gone viral on the Internet about a year ago.

Ogor: Once upon an opposition leader

Leo Ogor has been representing Isoko-North/Isoko-South Federal Constituency in Delta State at the House of Representatives since 2003. He was the Deputy Majority Leader of the House in the 7th Assembly and Minority Leader in the 8th Assembly. Ogor’s exploits as leader in both majority and minority caucuses is on record, especially during heated debates with his then opponent, Femi Gbajabiamila, who was also Minority Leader and Majority Leader at different times.

Politics / Buhari Under Fire As Gumi Calls For Creation Of Ministry For Hersdmen by Loveurneighbour: 6:52am On Jun 05, 2022
By John Owen Nwachukwu

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Saturday, lambasted the Federal Government and all the security agencies, accusing them of complicit silence and collective failure to arrest controversial Islamic cleric and bandit-sympathiser, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, in spite of his alleged many unguarded and alleged criminal statements.

HURIWA in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said it is not surprising that while the state-controlled Department of State Services go after objective critics of government’s unpopular policies, especially Christians like the Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Hassan Kukah; the late former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Obadiah Mailafia; the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has spared Gumi despite his inflammatory comments.

The group noted that Gumi, at a recent event in Abuja organised by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and the Northern Consensus Movement, called for the establishment of a ministry of nomadic affairs to address the grievances of herders just like the Federal Government created a ministry for Niger Delta affairs.

According to HURIWA, Gumi has definitely been speaking the mind of the complicitous bandit-enablers in government and that is why he has not been arrested because the Islamic cleric is considered a mouthpiece of both bandits launching attacks from the forests of the North-West and North Central states as well as a government agent, trumpeting its interest and shameless Fulanisation agenda in a non-conventional way.

The rights group said Gumi, who has been hobnobbing in the forests with notorious bandit leaders like Bello Turji and allegedly defending the killings and atrocious crimes of the terrorists before Nigerians, does not deserve to stay among decent people but should be arrested and detained in DSS custody until properly prosecuted in line with the counter Terrorism law.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “Sheikh Gumi is the real terrorist sympathiser. A chronic bandit-sympathiser is not so different from a terrorist. It is shameful that the government let people like Gumi roam the streets while it held the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, hostage for one full year.

Politics / PDP Primaries: HURIWA Tells EFCC To Arrest All Delegates After Atiku’s Victory by Loveurneighbour: 7:46pm On May 29, 2022
Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria,, HURIWA, has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to go after all the special delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the just concluded presidential primary election in Abuja.

The group also faulted the process that produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the PDP in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said Atiku’s emergence was allegedly heavily compromised by undue monetisation, adding that the candidate gave their candidate slot to the highest bidder.

The rights advocacy group said it was disappointing that operatives of the anti-graft agency only showed up at the venue of the primaries election at the MKO Abiola Stadium Abuja as if they don’t know that bribery of delegates has already taken place elsewhere as usual.

The group berated the EFCC for failing to deploy Intelligence skills in order to catch both the alleged bribe givers and takers.

Delegates for the presidential primaries were reportedly given at least $35,000 each by some northern aspirants and the allegation of bribery is yet to be debunked by the individuals so accused.

Atiku, however, emerged victorious in the election, polling 371 votes to defeat his closest rival, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who polled 237 votes.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “Nigerians were shocked at the corruption fiesta called PDP presidential primary on Sunday night.”

The withdrawal from the PDP race by former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi; and businessman, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen; who both said the PDP had monetised the process suffices that the presidential primary was nothing but corruption fiesta.

HURIWA also said it strongly condemns the conspiracy of the EFCC that pretended that it doesn’t know that bribes exchanged hands.

Recall that operatives of the anti-graft agency stormed the primary venue and HURIWA said it observed that dollars still changed hands as seen in several media reports. “How shameful!”

HURIWA “urged the EFCC top echelons in Abuja to prosecute the over 700 delegates that voted on Saturday/Sunday.”

Crime / Gunmen Kill Retired Senior Air Force Officer, Abduct His Children In Nasarawa by Loveurneighbour: 3:27pm On May 29, 2022
Unknown gunmen, early on Sunday morning, killed a former Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC), Mr. Zakari Umaru-Kigbu and abducted two of his daughters at Azuba, a suburb of the capital city of Nasarawa State, Lafia.

The deceased, a retired Air Force officer, was a kinsman of the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule.

He served as former Minister Labaran Maku’s agent in the just concluded Nasarawa Peoples Democratic Party primary before Maku’s eventual withdrawal from the governorship race.

It was gathered that the kidnappers had also demanded a ransom of N50 million for the release of the victims.

Confirming the report, the spokesman for Nasarawa State Police Command, ASP Ramhan Nansel, said, “We received a distress call at about 12:15 am about the attack and reacted swiftly by mobilizing our patrol teams and the military to the scene.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that the victim had been shot in his abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

“His two daughters were abducted to an unknown destination. The command has commenced an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators of the dastardly act.”

Politics / Nigerian Troops Invade Alleged Ipob's ESN Operational Camp, Kill Scores by Loveurneighbour: 3:20pm On May 29, 2022
Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised scores of alleged members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State.
The alleged IPOB/ESN members were killed last Friday during a raid carried out on their camp in between Ezinifite town and the Amaruru area of the state.

ESN is the militant wing of the separatist organisation, IPOB. Its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is currently being detained by Nigeria's secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS) and facing trial for offences bordering on terrorism and others.
Some soldiers also sustained bullet wounds during the operation and were rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment.
During the operation, pump-action shotguns, locally fabricated guns, revolver pistols, rounds of 7.62 mm special, live cartridges, machetes and IPOB flags were recovered by the troops.
IPOB leader, Kanu, in December 2020 launched ESN to protect the people of South-East and South-South regions from terrorists and bandits allegedly trooping in from the North.
Kanu described the outfit as a replica of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, earlier launched by the governors of the South-West to curb insecurity in the region.

“The sole aim and objective of this newly formed security outfit known as Eastern Security Network is to halt every criminal activity and terrorist attack on Biafraland,” Kanu had said.
“This outfit, which is a vigilante group like the Amotekun in the South-West and the Miyetti Allah security outfit, will ensure the safety of our forests and farmland which terrorists have converted into slaughter grounds and raping fields.”
He added that the establishment of the security outfit became necessary following what he described as the “failure” of the governors of the South-South and South-East to put in place measures to protect the people in those regions.

Crime / IPOB Terror Group Kills Muslim Woman, 4 Kids, 6 Other Northerners In Anambra by Loveurneighbour: 7:27am On May 25, 2022
Terrorists from the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Sunday killed an innocent Muslim woman, her four children and six others, all of them of northern extraction in Anambra State, Daily Trust reports.

The pregnant woman and her children were killed at Isulo, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.

The killings marked a new low in the heightened attacks on non-indigenes by IPOB terrorists who are also attacking the symbol of authority including the police and the military.

Natives of Anambra State and the South East, in general, have not also been spared by the IPOB terrorists who have been wreaking havoc for a long time amid agitation for secession.

However, 48 hours after the Sunday’s killing of the northerners without any provocation, the story has not been told by any of the national print and broadcast media despite wide coverage by the social media with graphic photos of the mayhem and condemnation by security operatives, groups and individuals over what they called “conspiracy of silence.”

The killing of the northerners was perpetrated by the outlawed group a few days after the discovery of the head of an Anambra State lawmaker who was abducted by the terrorists.

Sunday’s carnage

The Sarkin Hausawa of Orunba North LGA, Alhaji Sa’id Muhammad, yesterday decried that northerners in Anambra State have made up their minds to leave the state because of the constant killing of their relatives by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of the outlawed IPOB.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Muhammad said the killing of the pregnant woman together with her four children by gunmen was not new to them as many of his people were killed in such a callous manner.

"The woman was from Adamawa State. Before her death, she lived in Orumba South, and on Sunday, she visited her friends with her four children.

“It was on her way back home in Orumba South that she was killed. She was being conveyed by a commercial motorcyclist when they were ambushed by the gunmen. They murdered her and her four children but the motorcyclist escaped,” he said.

In a gory video trending on Twitter and seen by Daily Trust, the victims were seen lying in the pool of their blood with bullets spread around and a narrator speaking in Igbo saying, “Everybody should look at this video that they have shot a woman and her four children. They are from the North. And they are shooting everybody they see on the street; so people should be careful.”

Our correspondents report that on that very Sunday, five commercial motorcycle riders were also killed and their bikes burnt at Onocha LGA. The bodies of four of the deceased were deposited in the morgue while the fifth one was burnt to ashes.

Mohammed said another man, Abdullahi, who was selling roasted meat by the roadside at Nnanka, was also killed at his suya spot.

“His body was by the roadside since Sunday evening until in the afternoon on Monday when I called the police DPO and informed him about it and requested him to help us recover the remains.

“He told me that he cannot send his men there because of the sit-at-home order. We are now planning to leave for North as we can no longer stay here…They are killing us on daily basis,” he said.

He said his younger brother, Aliyu, was also killed two months ago in a similar manner.

Daily Trust reports that some trucks conveying goods to the South were also set ablaze in Anambra at the weekend and the drivers and other occupants were killed, injured or disappeared without a trace. Some truck drivers of northern extraction said that they are now operating with fear in the South East region.

Adamu Shu’aibu, who works with a private company in the region said that the rate at which the militants were attacking and killing drivers was alarming.

“I lost many of my colleagues to the nefarious activities of the terrorists and the killings are not being reported. Many of our colleagues have abandoned the driving job. The gunmen mostly attack drivers on some routes that have few or no security personnel.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ikenga Tochukwu, could not confirm the incidents, saying the details were sketchy.

Politics / Court Orders MC Oluomo, Lagos, NURTW To Stop Levying Drivers by Loveurneighbour: 5:18am On May 25, 2022
The Ikoyi Federal High Court has ordered the Chairman of the Lagos State Park and Garages Management, Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo, and eight others to stop collecting levies from commercial drivers.

Justice Peter Lifu gave the order in respect to an ex parte application filed by a lawyer, Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje.

The lawyer filed the application on behalf of himself and a new transport union, Transport Union Society of Nigeria.

Other respondents in the suit are the Registered Trustees of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Registered Trustees of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, Registered Trustees of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, Alhaji Lawal Othman, Lagos State Government, Attorney-General of Lagos State, Inspector-General of Police and the Director of State Security Service.

In the application supported by a 34-paragraph affidavit, Ogungbeje prayed the court to restrain the respondents from “forceful imposition, collection, extortion of any transport union levies, dues, fees, or monies from any person, commercial vehicle driver and/or transporter that is not a member of the respondents pending the hearing and determination of the substantive originating motion filed before the court.”

The counsel also prayed the court to restrain the respondents from “arresting, detaining, harassing, embarrassing, humiliating, inviting, seizing, and confiscating any commercial vehicle, disturbing and/or interfering with the lawful transport business operations of the applicant and its transport union members in connection with the facts of the case pending the determination of the substantive originating motion.”

Earlier, Justice Lifu had ordered the respondents in the suit to present their reasons within seven days why the reliefs sought by the applicants should not be granted.

At the resumed hearing, Ogungbeje informed the court that the processes were served on the respondents and added that they failed to respond.

On that ground, Justice Lifu granted the reliefs of the applicants.

He adjourned the case till June 6 to determine the applicants’ motion to add other parties to the suit.

Release ‘Mama Biafra’ From Detention, She’s Mother To Me – Nnamdi Kanu Tells Buhari Government

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has asked the Muhammadu Buhari government to release Mrs Ukamaka Ejezie, popularly known as “Mama Biafra” from the detention of the Department of State Services, Abuja.

According to Kanu, Mama Biafra, a septuagenarian, was arrested during the IPOB leader’s last court appearance in Abuja on May 18.

Kanu, who spoke from the DSS detention, also expressed rage over the spate of bloodletting and insecurity in the South-East.

Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, relayed the message on Monday evening in an interview with Vanguard after visiting the IPOB leader in detention.

Kanu also told his brother (Prince) that he was saddened by the reports of killings across the South-East.

The IPOB leader added that the detained Mama Biafra had been acting as his mother since his parents died.

He said that the old woman committed no crime for coming to Abuja to solidarise with him at the court when she was arrested.

“I saw her at the DSS detention cell after her clothes were washed and spread on the wall. I demand that she be released because she committed no crime. She is an old woman and since my mother died, I have taken her as my mother. The DSS should release her,” Kanu was quoted as saying.

Kanu urged all to ensure there was peace in South-East, adding that those behind the insecurity in the zone did not mean well for the people.

Politics / Enugu 2023: Sane, Godly Person Will Succeed Gov. Ugwuanyi – Fr. Mbaka by Loveurneighbour: 4:57pm On May 22, 2022
By Emmanuel Uzodinma

Charismatic Enugu Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has spelt out qualities expected from Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s successor.

The priest had earlier dismissed reports that he endorsed a particular candidate for the 2023 governorship election.

Speaking again on Sunday, Mbaka said his prayer was that God would give Enugu people a peacemaker in the mold of Governor Ugwuanyi.

He spoke at the Adoration ground in Emene Enugu when he received one of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship aspirants, Prof. Barth Nnaji.

He said, “we are welcoming my son, Prof Bart Nnaji. He is one of the governorship aspirants in Enugu and he has come to be with us. He is a great son of Wawa, a great man in the land of Umuode, a power generator. It will be well with you. My prayer for you is that the will of God be done.

“One of my children will become the Governor after Gburugburu. We are also praying for Gburugburu so that God will give him the wisdom, the grace, the favour to select a man after God’s own heart. That is my prayer for him in Jesus name.

“The person of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is in tandem with peace. There may not be too much flyovers in Enugu but there is peace. By midnight you see the people of Enugu walking about the streets fearlessly without security. The white men that came here the other day assessed it and I thank God for the good people of Enugu State that supported him to achieve it. The youths of Enugu, it shall be well with you.

“So, that is why I am praying for Gburugburu so that he will not make a mistake because one single mistake will put people in trouble. None of the politicians who are aspiring to be governor will expose his inner will. What you see are people who are not real. None of them is saying things from their heart, but we are waiting. Anyone they bring we will work for the people. If he wants peace, we will give him peace, if he wants to toy with the poor, we will chase him out of the seat.

“But we are praying so that God will give us someone who is sane, a tested and trusted personality, a competent hand, a father, a lover, an industrialist, a visionary, a godly person, a down to earth humble personality. We need a compassionate, empathic and sympathetic personality. Someone with a good heart and a good person.”

He added that, “we don’t need terrorism in this State. We don’t want to hear that this one is in this cult, while the other person is in another cult and then a cult war will start. They are all our children but we need a father to be governor so he will bring the entire Enugu together. Anyone who enters Enugu will know that he has entered a land of peace.

“Our people can survive even if you don’t help them. My prayer is that he selects a man of peace, a good man. I am not recommending anyone to him but I am praying that God puts a good man into his heart.”

Politics / Delegates’ List: PDP Suspends Primaries Indefinitely In Imo by Loveurneighbour: 4:47pm On May 22, 2022
The Peoples Democratic Party in Imo said it has suspended its primaries for the House of Assembly and House of Representatives indefinitely, over unreconciled delegates list.

A statement by the Legal Advisor of the party in the state, Mr Kessinger Ikeokwu, on Sunday, attributed the non-conduct of the primaries to confusion caused by the National Assembly.

Ikeoku explained that Imo would not vote along with other states who were now voting with their three-man and one-man national delegates.

He said: “Please note that the reason for the suspension of the PDP House of Assembly and House of Representatives primaries in Imo was a result of the confusion that arose from the error of the National Assembly in the country.

“This is hinged on Section 84(cool of the Electoral Act, which inadvertently led to the exclusion of over 80 per cent of delegates ordinarily meant to vote at the primaries.

“The Imo PDP’s case became compounded because it hadn’t tidied up its three-man ad hoc delegates, who ought to vote at the primaries, due to pending litigations.

“Every preparation was made for us to use our statutory delegates to vote, before the National Assembly saw the error in Section 84 of the Amended Electoral Act, 2022, which excluded the statutory delegates.

Politics / IPOB Not Good For Us, They Lie To Our People – Gov Umahi Warns, Gives Reason by Loveurneighbour: 2:35pm On May 22, 2022
By Ochogwu Sunday

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State says the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, should not be welcomed in the Southeast due to their negative activities.

The governor, who is also vying for the sole presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, stated this while playing host to leaders and members of the Nigeria Guild of Editors in Abakaliki at the weekend.

According to Umahi, the agitation by the secessionist group is unhealthy for the region, revealing that he had raised the alarm while still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He explained that IPOB succeeded in deceiving the Igbos that the geo-political zone is infiltrated with strangers, alleging that they also engage in hate speech.

Umahi said, “There is extreme politics in this region and it must stop, when we started especially before my defection, we were all working together and I was championing it that IPOB is not good for us because of the kind of agitations that were being meted out was not correct.

“First hate-speeches and from there it developed to violence and they have continued to lie to our people that our place has been infiltrated, it is a lie, it is South East killing South East people and the security people and until we are bold to say this, it will continue”.

Politics / Hausa Community Seeks Reversal Of Okada Ban, Promises Sanwo-Olu Massive Votes by Loveurneighbour: 7:31am On May 19, 2022
Some leaders of the Hausa community in Lagos State have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reverse the ban on Okada operations in six local government areas of the state.

The leaders, who spoke in separate interviews with The PUNCH, on Wednesday, said Okada riders who hail from northern Nigeria contribute significantly to the voting population of Lagos and should not be economically strangulated.

Sanwo-Olu had on Wednesday banned the operations of commercial motorcycle riders in six Local Governments and nine Local Government Development Areas in the state.

The affected councils are Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland and Apapa.

The governor said, “We will not sit back and watch criminally-minded people use that mode of transportation (motorcycles) to perpetrate crimes and criminality in Lagos. Lives are being lost on a daily basis, preventable accidents are happening every day and the riders are not respecting any of our traffic laws.

“The situation has led to a complete breakdown of law and order. This ban has come to stay and we will not tolerate any weakness in enforcement.”

But the Seriki of Obalende, Saliu Waziri, told The PUNCH that the government should rethink its decision.

Waziri said the government should instead get the data of Okada riders in Lagos to fish out any intruder or criminally-minded fellows.

He said, “This issue has taken us a long time and we have been trying to put our members on the line. I want to advise the government to rethink its decision because Lagos can’t operate without bikes because of traffic. Government should register Okada riders in each local government to know those working in any local government. By so doing, the government would know who to pick when any issue arises.

“Some of our members stay here in Lagos and vote during elections. That should count for something because we contribute to votes during elections. The government should change the system of Okada riders not stopping them.”

Waziri, however, ruled out the possibility of taking any legal action against the state government.

The Seriki Hausa of Ajah, Ibrahim Ngoma, agreed with his Obalende counterpart that the government should consider the voting population of Hausa Okada riders in Lagos.

“Truth be told, Governor Sanwo-Olu has been understanding with Okada people unlike Governor (Babatunde) Fashola. Okada members should obey the law while I appeal to Governor Sanwo-Olu to look into the matter and lift the ban before the election because the ban is affecting my people,” he said.

Also, another leader of the Hausa community in Lagos, Iliyasu Kira, in a telephone interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday, pleaded with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to reverse the ban.

Politics / Presidency: Handover To A Christian, We Are Against Muslim-Muslim Ticket – PFN by Loveurneighbour: 3:42pm On May 15, 2022
Ahead of the 2023 Presidential election, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has warned against a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

National President of PFN, Wale Oke, said Christians would vote against any political party that fielded a Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023.

Speaking at the 30th anniversary of the PFN establishment in Osun State on Saturday, Oke said President Muhammadu Buhari should hand over to a Christian in 2023.

He stressed that it would be “unfair” for Buhari to hand over to another Muslim.

A statement by Osun PFN Director of Media, Bishop Seun Adeoye, quoted Oke as saying, “The Church in Nigeria is saying no to a Muslim-Muslim ticket. We are going to mobilise the church against such a political party. PFN has 65 million people and we will vote against such a party.

“Obasanjo handed over to Yar’adua, Yar’adua to Jonathan, and Jonathan to Buhari and who else should Buhari hand over to, but a Christian.”

Oke also urged PFN members to collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards, PVC.
