Politics / Supreme Court Declares Executive Order 10 Unlawful, Dismisses Govs’ N66bn Suit by Loveurneighbour: 2:57pm On Feb 11, 2022
The Supreme Court, on Friday, declared that the Executive Order 10 on the funding of State Judiciary and Legislature, was unlawful and unconstitutional.

The majority of a 7-member panel of the court agreed that the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), exceeded his constitutional powers in issuing the EO 10.

The EO 10 issued by the president was then voided, and set aside by six out of the seven members of the panel.

The court also dismissed the N66 billion suit filed by state governors against the Federal Government.

Education / STRIKE: ASUU Sensitises Students On Planned Strike by Loveurneighbour: 7:29pm On Feb 10, 2022
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Calabar chapter, has sensitised students of the institution over the planned strike by the union if the federal government fails to meet their demands.

Dr John Edor, Chairman of the union in UNICAL, who organised a forum on Thursday in Calabar, sensitised the students on the demands of ASUU and why they intend to embark on strike.

He said that the students were critical in the decision of the union.

According to Edor, ASUU was demanding for the deployment of the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) in the payment of salaries of lecturers.

He highlighted other demands to include; release of funds for revitalisation of universities, payment of salary arrears, payment of Earned Academic Allowance, and the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.

Edor noted that the state of infrastructure in public universities had deteriorated to a level where students no longer have accommodation in the hostels due to lack of facilities, adding that lecture halls were no longer enough to meet the students’ population.

After the sensitisation engagement between ASUU and the students, the chairman led the students in a solidarity walk with other members of the union to press for their demands from the federal government.

“The federal government entered into a Memorandum of Action in Dec. 2020 with ASUU to end the prolonged strike action by the union.

“One year down the line, the federal government has willfully refused to honour the Memorandum of Action.

“What we are struggling for is the good of the students and the growth of the education sector in the country.

“We have to sensitise the general public and in particular the students of the University of Calabar.

“I am happy that the Nigerian students in UNICAL are joining forces with ASUU to press home their demands for the growth of the education sector,” he said

He called on the federal government to rise up to its responsibility especially as it concerns the education sector in Nigeria.

Edor urged the federal government to prioritise education in Nigeria by investing massively in the sector.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Mr Tryon Bassey, who is the Students Union President, said that the demands by ASUU were genuine and timely, following the dearth of infrastructure in public universities.

“We the students of the University of Calabar have joined forces with ASUU to ensure that their demands are met.

“The federal government should release funds for the revitalisation of universities in Nigeria,” he said. (NAN)

Politics / No Fairness In Politics, Prepare To Steal Votes,Cleric Advises Nigerian Politici by Loveurneighbour: 4:42pm On Feb 10, 2022
By Saviour Imukudo

“(To win election) you must have a structure that spans across all the polling booths, with young men and foot soldiers that are ready to die for you because they think people must be ready to die.”

A Nigerian cleric has shockingly advised those who are interested in politics to be prepared to steal ballot boxes as the country prepares for general elections in 2023.

The cleric, Abel Damina, premised his advice on an argument that there is no fairness and justice in politics anywhere in the world, including the U.S.

“Somebody said they are rigging elections. There’s no government that doesn’t rig elections, including America. That is the way the system works. It is survival,” Mr Damina, the pastor of Power City International, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, says in a video clip circulating on social media.

“So if you are thinking of politics, start thinking of contending as a (a means of) survival. So they are stealing ballot box, steal your own. That’s the way the system works. It means all of us are thieves – steal, I steal. The man that steal pass becomes governor.”

The congregants laughed out loud over Mr Damina’s comment as captured in the clip.

The clip is undated but it is clear the pastor was speaking inside his church situated in the heart of Uyo.

The clip may, however, be viewed as being recent because of the current political situation in Akwa Ibom State where Governor Udom Emmanuel hand-picked his preferred successor for the 2023 governorship election, claiming that he had a revelation from God about his choice of the Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Umo Eno.

The pastor, quoting a Bible portion (1 Samuel 8: 5 – 18) to back his claim, said God does not get involved in politics and governance.

Democracy, according to him, “is a system of imperfection run by imperfect people and ends with imperfect people”.

“If a man of God tells you you’ll be governor, it is a lie. God doesn’t get involved in these things. It is people that are not taught that fall for those soothsaying.

“We are men of God, we have no business prophesying over politicians. No, that’s not our calling, our calling is to perfect you (the congregants), to strengthen you, to teach you so you can mature in Christ and if you have any circular conviction we wish you well. Go there and do your best,” he said.

“If you come to me and tell me you want to be a governor, I will tell you I wish you well and God bless you because I don’t know what you have set on ground.

“You’ll be a fool if you didn’t set anything and come and say the Lord says I will be governor. You’ll be a fool because the government doesn’t happen overnight, you must have a structure that spans across all the polling booths with young men and foot soldiers that are ready to die for you because they think people must be ready to die.

“If you don’t have that kind of thing just stay in your corner, look for one small business and be happy with Jesus. And then when they finish the election, you (can) apply for a job,” he said.

Mr Damina is not new to controversial remarks. In 2017, the pastor preached against Christians giving money to churches and in turn expecting God to bless them with riches.

“God does not multiply your money. What multiplies your money is work,” Mr Damina had said.

Education / ‘we Should Redesign School Curriculum, Reduce Subjects Being Taught’ by Loveurneighbour: 3:52pm On Feb 10, 2022
By Adesina Wahab

After bagging first and second degrees in education and being involved in moulding the character and future of young ones for over 40 years by working in various schools, Mrs Folasade Phillips, has seen a lot to be an authority in school management and how to handle young ones. In this interview, she speaks on a number of issues relating to school management.

HOW did your journey in the education sector begin?

Well, I am a 1979 graduate of Education Science from the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State. I later got a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos in 1988 and ever since I have been involved in education as a teacher. I did my National Youth Service Corps at Queen Amina College, Kaduna State and worked briefly in the old Oyo State before I joined the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission and I worked there till 1990.

During the period, I worked in a number of public schools.

In the early 1990s, private schools were just becoming popular in the country. In 1991, I joined Bells Secondary School, Ota, Ogun State as pioneer vice-principal. Then I was commuting to work in Ota from Lagos and my husband told me something that eventually came to pass. He said I should do the job diligently and that I would not need to seek for job again that job offers would be pouring on my laps and I would need to be making choices and that is what happened.

After Bells, the next job I got was to be the principal of Atlantic Hall in Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos. I didn’t apply. It was a friend who called me to come and meet some people in her place one weekend. I got there and we were just discussing about education generally and I was told I have been offered a job. I was there as the principal from 1994 to 2000. I moved to Trinity International College, Ofada, Ogun State as the principal from 2000 to 2010 and became an executive director in 2010 and retired in 2013.

After retirement, I relocated to the United States as I wanted to be close to my family members. After a few years, I got bored. I felt I still have more to contribute to nurturing children. I love to teach, inspire and nurture young people to become disciplined adults and teachers to become more professional and prepare them for leadership. I am proud to say I have achieved that. Teachers that I groomed have become top teachers in various schools. I was able to convince my family to let me start this project and luckily for me, they keyed into the project.

Why the choice of Iperu Remo as the location of the school?
Deciding where to locate the school was another factor. Is it in Lagos? Something jolted me to look at Iperu Remo. During the burial ceremony of my father here at Methodist Church, Iperu-Remo, the cleric that officiated urged us to start an educational foundation.
He said we are a family of well educated people and that struck me. So when the issue of location came up, my mind went to that and I told my husband that Iperu-Remo would be it and he agreed. Destiny helpers and people of like mind have been of considerable assistance.

As part of giving back to the society, we have some programmes for the community. We have the Angels of Light programme through which we give support to the elderly and we do that using churches. That is done regularly. We also have full scholarship for indigent students from this community. Through the Ministry of Education, we get indigent but brilliant final year primary school pupils discovered and we give them admission here.

Advice for government
Regarding the setting up of private schools, there should be some standards to be met. It isn’t that someone would rent a flat and pronto he has become a school owner.

Though all classes may not be built at once, there should be standard in the designs of the schools. For public schools, they are overcrowded and they need more facilities and teachers. Our curriculum should be redesigned and it is people who know about it that should be involved.

Children can be more focused and go in-depth if the subjects are not as many as they are now. Some subjects can be merged. We need to change what we teach and our teaching styles. Let the children do presentations in class. They will be confident and learn the art of speaking and even leadership skills.

Politics / Atiku’s Supporter Remanded In Prison For Allegedly Insulting Emir by Loveurneighbour: 3:33pm On Feb 08, 2022
By Abubakar Ahmadu Maishanu

Yusuf Baban-Yola was arraigned on a three-count charge of cyberstalking, use of insulting or abusive language and inciting public disturbance.

A supporter of former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Yusuf Baban-Yola, 43, has been remanded in prison for allegedly insulting the Lamido of Adamawa, Barkindo Aliyu-Musdafa.

The chief magistrate court I in Yola, on Monday, ordered the remand of Mr Baban-Yola who was arraigned by the police following a complaint from the emirate council.

How it started

Mr Baban-Yola was allegedly angry with a politician, Bako DDK, who on a radio programme had accused Mr Abubakar of failing to impact the lives of the people of Adamawa while he was vice president.

In a programme last week on NAS F.M, Mr DDK, who is a supporter of President Muhammadu, reeled out the achievements of the president in the state and dared the Atiku camp to come forward and mention those of Mr Abubakar.

He said the president has done what Mr Abubakar did not do by appointing many people from Adamawa into positions at the federal level.

“Unlike the former vice president, who can you mention that rose through him from Adamawa? In my previous programme, I challenged Atiku’s supporter (s) to mention a developmental project done by the former vice president, but up to date they have not,” Mr DDK said.

But immediately after the programme, Mr Baban-Yola engaged Mr DDK on phone and told him to stay away from Mr Abubakar.

While Mr Baban-Yola rained insults on Mr DDK, the latter pleaded that he had respect for him. He said the radio programme was purely political and his statements were not made to demean the personality of the former vice president.

But Mr Baban-Yola was not appeased.
“Even if your father is the Lamido of Adamawa, I will f**k the Lamido. Let’s see tomorrow, I will deal with you even if your father is the National Security Adviser, go to Aso Rock Villa and report me.

“You are in Jimeta just like myself, I will deal with you. F**k you with your politics. Is Atiku your mate? Is he your son? I will show you I have influence in this land,” the furious Mr Baban-Yola said

Politics / 2023: Atiku, Others At Risk As Reps To Raise Minimum Education Qualifications by Loveurneighbour: 3:03pm On Feb 08, 2022
By Abdul Seye

The House of Representatives has passed, for second reading, a bill to bar people without university degrees from contesting the presidential position.

To contest for federal and state legislature and governorship seats, a candidate will need a minimum of a university degree.

The bill, sponsored by Oriyomi Onanuga, seeks to amend sections 66, 106, 131 and 171 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The proposed bill, if passed, means that lawmakers, governors and presidents must have a minimum qualification of a Bachelor degree, a Higher National Diploma, Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) and other degree equivalent certificates.

Several politicians in Nigeria use secondary school or primary school certificates to run for office.

Former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at the last general election, Atiku Abubakar, presented a Diploma as his highest qualification. Mr Abubakar is believed to be interested in running for president in 2023.

It is not only Mr Atiku that presented less than a university degree or equivalent. Omoyele Sowore, the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) also presented a Senior Secondary School Certificate, WAEC, as his highest qualification.

On Tuesday, the House debated the general principle of the bill and passed it for second reading. The bill was subsequently transmitted to the Committee on Constitution Amendment.

If passed, politicians without qualifications up to degree level will be ruled out.

Politics / IPOB Ban Fulani Cow Consumption,Promises To Assist Farmers To Breed 'Efi-Igbo by Loveurneighbour: 5:01pm On Feb 07, 2022
By Nwafor Sunday

…Says decision to ban Fulani cow consumption in April, sacrosanct

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has promised to assist any farmer in the South-East, that wants to breed local cows popularly known as ‘Efi-Igbo’.

This is as the group also explained the rationale behind the stoppage of the movement and consumption of Fulani cows in the region.

In a statement made available to Vanguard, IPOB through its Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful argued that the groups’ decision was made following reports of alleged mass murder, raping of women and kidnapping of persons in the region by those rearing the cows.

The group equally stated that the failure of security agents to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice, was part of the reason it banned the consumption of Fulani cows in the South-East.

“We also wish to correct the misinformation and misconceptions surrounding our position on the issue which our enemies are peddling to blackmail us. In the first place, the decision was taken as a last resort after many years of patience over the unprovoked genocidal attacks by Fulani herdsmen on our communities, and the failure of the Nigeria security agencies to rein in the rampaging murderers.

“Since their cows have been the reason the Fulani jihadists are slaughtering our people, destroying our farms, raping our women and kidnapping our men for ransom, we have decided to stop consuming these cursed Fulani cows which have now become a source of sorrow and death. It’s better we are alive and eat no Fulani cows than desire to eat them and be killed.

“The world should note that before arriving at this IRREVERSIBLE decision, we have made several appeals to the federal government and the security agencies to stop the Fulani from their atrocities in our land but they looked the other way, leaving our hapless communities at the mercy of these messengers of death. Our patience has been over stretched beyond its elasticity point. We can no longer afford to fold our arms and be waiting for the last man in Biafra land to be killed by Fulani jihadists masquerading as herdsmen.

“So, our decision to ban the movement, sale and consumption of Fulani cows throughout Biafra land with effect from April of this year is not borne out of hate but we are safeguarding our land and our people from the evil agenda of Fulani. Our decision is born out of the natural desire to preserve our race from being wiped out by the Fulani terrorist Herdsmen. “

Our decision to ban Fulani cow consumption in April, sacrosanct – IPOB

On its decision to ban outrightly the consumption of Fulani cows in April, IPOB said it was sacrosanct, advising those dealing on Fulani cows to stop and look for something else.

“Our people waste huge sums of money up to three Billion Naira every year on cow meats and we won’t allow that to continue and encouraging those who have the money to start breeding our local cows (Efi Igbo) and other farming, IPOB will support them to boasts the farming and animal husbandry business.

“If you are a Biafran dealing on Fulani cows in Biafraland, its better you look for an alternative now because we won’t spear any inch regarding Fulani terrorists herdsmen cows after April this year, don’t say we don’t warn you. A word is enough for the wise”, part of the statement read.

Politics / 2023: Ikwerre People Are Not Igbo, Ameachi Wants To Change Our History – by Loveurneighbour: 1:00pm On Feb 07, 2022
By Clement Chinedu

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Chidi Wihioka, has accused the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, of attempting to change the history of Ikwerre people because of his presidential ambition.

Wihioka, who is a loyalist of Magnus Abe, alleged that Amaechi has been telling Nigerians that Ikwerre people are Igbos because he wants to become president.

The former member of the House of Representatives was speaking at an event held in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

He insisted that Ikwerre people are not Igbo, saying they have their own history and culture.

He said, “This is a man that wants to turn the history of Ikwerre land and said Ikwerre is Igbo. We are ashamed of him. Ikwerre can never be Igbo.

“We have our history and we have our record. You cannot rewrite our record because you want to be president. If you want to be something your brothers and sisters would know. As far as we are concerned, we have not given any approval to whoever that is talking about him.”

Meanwhile, Amaechi has not declared any interest to run for the presidential election in 2023.

Education / Police Detained Student For Buying Pregnancy Test Kit, Postpill by Loveurneighbour: 3:46pm On Feb 06, 2022
By Ishola Oludare

The police in Ogun State have arrested and detained a graduating student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta for being in possession of pregnancy test kit and contraceptives.

The female student, Irenimofe Olanipekun, said she was picked up around Oluwo-Adigbe area of Abeokuta and placed behind bars after buying the items from a pharmacy.

According to her, a policeman had on Friday stopped her to confirm what she had in a polythene bag in her hand.

She said the policeman got her detained for having the test kit and contraceptive, saying, “They (the police) were just shouting why am I having sex; can’t I remain a virgin for my husband?”

The 24-year-old Olanipekun stated that she was released about two hours after her arrest when her sister had already raised the alarm on the social media.

She said that the pharmacist who sold the drug to her was arrested for questioning, but she was released few minutes after.

The Ogun State police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the police were only doing their duties by questioning her to know whether or not she had a doctor’s prescription to get the items.

“The command has released her since morning. She was questioned if she has a doctor’s prescription,” Oyeyemi said.

But Nigerians have condemned the action of the police, questioning when it became a crime to have sex or procure pills and test kits at age 24.

Residents of Oluwo, who spoke to our correspondent, said the officers at Oluwo police post are “fond of illegal arrest to extort students and commercial motorcyclists” known as Okada riders.

They called on the Ogun State Police Commissioner, Lanre Bankole to caution his men in Adigbe division and those posted to Oluwo.

Meanwhile, MAPOLY Students’ Union Government has cautioned those trying to take undue advantage of Olanipekun’s arrest, saying the issue has been resolved.

In a statement made available to our correspondent on Sunday, the MAPOLY SUG President, Babatunde Adeola, said: “The Students’ Union President of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic received a distress call that one of our students was arrested by the police. She was accused of buying pregnancy test strip and post pills (contraceptive drugs); as reported by her sister, a resident of Lagos State and some concerned students of the school.

“We hereby urge you all to disregard the false information spreading round as regards to the matter. No lawyer was involved in the issue. The drug with her was only postpill and nothing more. The student’s bail was granted immediately after the Students’ Union President, Comrade Babatunde Adeola, visited the police station for intervention.

“Our attention has been drawn to some unknown elements trying to make use of the story for personal and financial gain, and we call on Ogun State Police command to disregard anyone trying to make issue out of none from the story as the case has been settled.

“Disregard any counter story to the narration above, and also do away with sharing false information.”

Crime / Blood Money: Nigerians Worried As Ritualists Take Over Major Cities by Loveurneighbour: 7:34am On Feb 06, 2022
The get-rich-quick syndrome among youths, through the new trend of money rituals in Nigeria, has become a major concern in the society today.

DAILY POST observation shows that the new trend is rampant among the male gender, especially young boys aged 15 and above.

Recently three teenagers confessed to the killing and burning of a young girl’s head for money ritual.

The lady identified as Rofiat was strangled by her boyfriend with the aid of three friends at Oke Aregba area of Abeokuta in Ogun State last weekend.

Not long ago, a mother also confessed to the killing of her child for a money ritual.

DAILY POST interacted with some Nigerians who first blamed the dwindling value system in the country for the increasing rate of blood rituals.

Some others also believe that the lack of job opportunities for the teaming youths, the display of wealth and lavish lifestyle on social media by celebrities, have chased the young ones into these heinous activities.

Some Nigerians also blamed parents for failing in their responsibilities to bring up their children and wards uprightly. According to them, some parents receive money from children who have no source of income and fail to question them.

Churches, mosques, and religious leaders also share the blame for receiving monies, tithes, and donations from individuals they do not know their source of wealth, thereby encouraging such acts.

However, many blamed the ‘corrupt’ government for failing to provide good leadership and governance. This is why youths resort to internet fraud ‘Yahoo’ and ritual killings to get rich quickly.

Pastor Joseph Ebule of the Holy Ghost Power Ministries, who spoke to one of our reporters on this matter said, “With the way things are happening in this country, I will advise Nigerians to be prayerful.

“These are signs of end time. I honestly blame the parents of those kids for not giving them adequate teachings from the Holy Book. Even the Bible says, ‘train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it’, that same Bible also advised against bad counsels.

“If the parents had done their jobs correctly, those children would not have thought of such regardless of the hardship in this country. Do you know some parents support their children’s illegal means of making money?”

DAILY POST also spoke with some Nigerians on the streets of Abuja.

A trader, who simply identified herself as Mama Boma, wondered why the government is not fishing out ‘herbalists’ directing the youths to bring body parts to make money.

“Why is it that when people doing rituals are arrested, there is no follow up to also arrest the ‘herbalists’ or ‘babalawo’ who prepared the potions and charms for them or do they take portions to forget who the ‘herbalists’ are once they’re caught?”

For Lizzy Oku, “There are a lot of factors to be blamed for this development in our society. First, let us look at the entertainment industry and the songs they release for youths to listen to. These songs glorify making money illegally and mock ‘humble earnings.’

“Back in the days, we listened and danced to Yahooze by Olu Maintain when he was singing about fraud. Songs like ‘Cash app’, and many others clearly alluded to fraud.

“Let’s not forget Nollywood, instead of releasing movies that do not support money rituals, some producers outline fictional details of how to make money quickly through rituals and you expect the youth not to take note?

“My only advice to Nigerian youths is to be prayerful and be careful of the kind of friends they keep. Treat everyone like a suspect and don’t feel bad about it. If the government will not do something about this, every Nigerian should promote humble earning.”

Also speaking with our reporter, an Abuja-based lawyer, Barr Abiola Kolawole pointed out that the trend of ritual killing in Nigeria was as a result of negligence from the family, the society and the government.

“Let’s take the aforementioned institutions one after the other,” he said, explaining that “The family is the foundation of every human being, which automatically makes it the first institution the child is exposed to; the fact is a child is the product of his parent, consequently a child will learn from the parents.

“If You don’t program your mind, society will program your mind for you.

“The society plays a vital role in the lives of people, the society unconsciously controls its members, that is why big brands pay a lot of money to influencers in certain areas to influence the members of that society.

“In this instance, the society has gone beyond the immediate community, social media is now part of the society. The society is the biggest culprit in relation to this man-made disaster of ritual killings.

“The pressure from the society has caused this. I give you a case we all know, Kim Kardashian influenced women of this generation into appreciating or exaggerating the idea of having big buttocks.

“Nollywood first introduced the idea of money rituals to Nigerians with movies such as: ‘Blood Money, Living In Bondage, Billionaires Club’ and others. But the same Nollywood also made everyone understand the consequences of making money through those heinous ways.

“The lackadaisical prosecution of these ritualists and fraudsters has encouraged the new generation to join in.

“To make matters worse, some of these ritualists work hand-in-hand with some persons in the government, helping them launder money which makes it impossible for some of the fraudsters to be prosecuted,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, the Traditional Religion Worshippers Association has kicked against the use of human lives for riches.

Calling on the Federal Government to clamp down on the people that claim to have the power to enrich others to become wealthy through the use of human parts for rituals, the group explained that no Yoruba deity was recorded to have used human beings or parts of their bodies for wealth.

In a statement via its Oyo State chapter, the body stressed that the progenitors of Ifa oracle never claimed to have used human parts to seek prosperity.

The body further explained that Ifa adherents would rather call on ‘Eledumare’ to bless whoever that sought wealth through them and whenever appeasements were to be done, simple items like sugarcane, salt, banana among others were used.

Politics / 2023 Presidency: The Decision Of The South Will Shake Nigeria — Wike by Loveurneighbour: 7:46pm On Feb 05, 2022
By Davies Iheamnachor,

The Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike has said that when the leaders of Southern part of the country will declare its decision on the 2023 presidency that the country would shake.

Wike also said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, would not give its presidential ticket to any candidate who would serve only the interest of the wealthy few in Nigeria, adding that desperate politicians who will not serve the interest of many, rather the interest of few are already scheming to be candidate.

The governor made the assertion at a grand reception organised in his honour by the people of Kalabari ethnic nationality at the Abalama School field in Asari Toru Local Government Area on Saturday, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media Kelvin Ebiri.

The governor was conferred a traditional title of Se- Ibidokubo of Kalabari land (He who does good things for Kalabari people) and was performed by the Amayanabo of Abonnema, King Gboko Desreal Bob-manuel.

He reiterated that the stakeholders in Southern will soon make a declarative statement concerning 2023 presidential election.

Wike said: “The day the South will speak, Nigeria will shake. We believe in the unity of this country, but nobody can threaten us. Nobody should threaten us. We believe in the unity of Nigeria and unity of Nigeria must continue.”

The governor said no amount of gang up will make the PDP to compromise its stand on integrity.

He said: “His word: “No amount of gang up can make PDP to give somebody who will want to run election for the interest of some big men, and not for all Nigerians.

“Anybody who wants to be candidate of PDP must be candidate for the interest of Nigerians.”

He expressed concerns over the fact that some companies in the country continue to post annual financial profits regularly in a downing national economy to the detriment of the poor.

The governor lampooned Rivers politicians serving in the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for their gross inability to attract federal government projects to the State.

Concerning the next governorship of Rivers State, Governor Wike said everybody is entitled to aspire to be the next governor ,but such person must show capacity for that office and be well disposed to protect the interest of the State.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Rivers State Elders Forum, Chief Ferdinand Anabraba, said the grand reception is significant for two reasons; of its critical importance to them as a people and also because of the unity of purpose engendered among them under the Wike’s administration.

He said it is that kind of reception organised for prominent sons and friends who have impacted the Kalabari people.

Chief Anabraba noted that Governor Wike has systematically fulfilled all promises made to them including those of development projects and appointment of Kalabari people into his administration.

Politics / 2023: Hope For Atiku, Saraki, Tambuwal, Kwankwaso As PDP Moves To Scrap Zoning by Loveurneighbour: 4:42pm On Feb 05, 2022
There may be a beam of hope for popular politicians from the northern part of Nigeria who have shown interest to run for president in 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party as the party says it may drop its zoning culture and throw the presidential primary open to all eligible members from all over the country.

PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdullahi Ibrahim, on Friday, unequivocally said the leadership of the party was considering scrapping the idea of zoning for the 2023 Presidency.

Ibrahim, who spoke in an interview with Arise News monitored by The PUNCH, also said the PDP won’t wait for the All Progressives Congress before taking a decision on zoning or otherwise for the 2023 Presidency.

Northern PDP chieftains who have shown interest in getting the party’s 2023 presidential ticket include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed; and ex-governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso. While some of them had yet to officially declare their presidential bid, there are strong indications they are eyeing the exalted seat in Aso Villa.

With just about one year to the 2023 presidential election and a few months to the party primaries, there has been intense pressure from the southern region of the country for power shift to the region from the north.

The 17 southern governors and socio-political groups including Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Pan Niger Delta Forum and the Middle Belt Forum had constantly insisted that power moved to the south in 2023 after the eight-year regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who is from Katsina State.

The groups had declared that political parties that field northern presidential candidates won’t enjoy their support in the 2023 general elections.

Also, foremost Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark, recently urged northern presidential aspirants to reconsider their ambition to avoid “chaos” in the country.

Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999 after the dark years of military despotism, power had swung between the North and the South.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo (Southerner from Ogun State) was in office from May 1999 to May 2007 on the platform of the PDP while the late Umaru Yar’Adua from Katsina State in Northern Nigeria, also on the platform of the PDP, had a short stint in Aso Rock from May 2007 until his death in May 2010 after battling with an ailment.

Upon his passing, he was succeeded by his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan, according to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The PDP chieftain and former governor of Bayelsa State from Southern Nigeria contested the 2011 presidential election and returned to office.

Jonathan was, however, kicked out in May 2015 when he lost his reelection bid to Katsina-born Buhari of the All Progressives Congress who has since been in power and would complete an eight-year term by May 2023.

In its history, the PDP has zoned four of its six presidential tickets to southerners since 1999 – two to Obasanjo in 1999 and 2003, and two to Jonathan in 2011 and 2015; while the two others have gone to northerners – Yar’Adua in 2007 and Atiku in 2019.

So far, southerners have been in office for a total number of 13 years while northerners would have spent 11 years in Aso Rock when Buhari completes his second term in May 2023.

Many politicians of northern extraction had argued for the need to balance the number of years that both the north and south stayed in power while southern political godfathers and strongmen have vigorously continued to displace the argument, insisting that the presidency should move to the south in 2023 after Buhari’s double term. The arguments had at various times led to strong verbal altercations and exchange of expletives between southern politicians and northern bigwigs.

Speaking on the television programme on Friday, the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary (Ibrahim) said the PDP is treading softly to ensure all interests are accommodated before the party comes up with a decision on its zoning culture.

Ibrahim said, “The haste with which people are just expecting us to declare zoning now, there are processes of consultations and engagements which is ongoing. We just have in place a National Working Committee which is barely two months in office. What it is doing now is to aggregate all the contending forces and interests and all the divergent views of Nigerians and come up with an informed decision as to where the Presidency will be zoned accordingly.”

According to the PDP chieftain, zoning is to strengthen unity and mutual cohesion because Nigeria is heterogenous in nature hence the need to allocate responsibilities accordingly.

He said, “It is only PDP that has realised the need to zone these offices and rotate them accordingly so that every interest, every region and every contending force within the country will feel among.”

Asked whether the PDP is thinking of jettisoning the idea of zoning, Ibrahim said, “It is on the table and it is a factor that is taken very seriously. We’re beginning to look at all of these interests and all of these clamour to see how we will make an informed decision at the fullness of time. It is not something we will want to do unilaterally, we will take national interest and divergent views of Nigerians in coming up with decisions. That is why we are not rushing things.”

On why the National Executive Council of the PDP has not taken a decision on the Governor Bala Mohammed report that the presidential ticket be left open to all interested aspirants, the PDP deputy national publicity secretary said consultation is ongoing.

Aside from northern politicians, some southern stalwarts of the PDP including former Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim; former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose; ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; media personality, Dele Momodu, amongst others have also expressed interest in clinching the party’s 2023 presidential ticket in the primary which is expected to hold later this year.

Other presidential hopefuls so far outside of the PDP include APC leader, Bola Tinubu; Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi; ex-Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha; former Governor of Abia State and Majority Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Kalu; former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, among others. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has also been rumoured to nurse an ambition to succeed his boss through the 2023 election but the professor of law has not officially made his intention known.

While politicians are engrossed in the zoning debate, the concerns of millions of Nigerians are about the emergence of a President who would stabilise the economy, force down inflation through sagacious fiscal policies, provide conducive operating environment for businesses to thrive, boost food production, secure lives and property, provide good infrastructure, quality education and affordable healthcare services.

Crime / ISWAP Abducts 3 In Mandaragirau Village In Borno by Loveurneighbour: 11:27am On Feb 05, 2022
Reports from Mandaragirau Village in southern Borno indicates that fighters from the Islamic State for West African Province, ISWAP abducted three people in the early hours of Saturday.

The three young men abducted are Yamta Usman, Hamidu Adamu Chiroma and Mustapha Adamu Chiroma also known as Lingi.

Sources told DAILY POST, “We woke up to this shocker. The last time this kind of episode happened here was when they went to the market and pick someone. But that one we learnt that they suspected him to be an informant for the soldiers.

” For these young men, we are suspecting that the ISWAP may be out to take young men to forcefully conscript them into their ranks. ISWAP recently have been recruiting young men from villages around the southern Borno axis.” He said.

Another resident told DAILY POST that it was rather unbelievable to see happenings like this when the news making the round indicated that the military was dealing decisively with the ISWAP elements.

” If something like this will continue to happen in the face of the ongoing stories and promises, then we do not know who to trust or believe anymore. I was devastated to receive the message very early in the morning that ISWAP came to our village and took with them some young men.

“This is sad. We have not received any news regarding why they were taken. We are all praying for them to return safely. But I am equally afraid of the happening especially these days with such reports of abduction and current recruitment by the ISWAP. ” He said.

Sports / Man United Vs Middlesbrough: Ronaldo Mocked On 37th Birthday As #penaldo Trends by Loveurneighbour: 9:47am On Feb 05, 2022
Twitter fans mocked Cristiano Ronaldo on his 37th birthday after missing a penalty against Middlesbrough late Friday.

This is as the Twitter user trended #Penaldo and #Ronaldo, with cruel jokes.

United suffered a shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Championship club Middlesbrough who won 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Rangnick’s team crashed out in the fourth round after Anthony Elanga blazed his spot-kick over the bar in a nerve-jangling shoot-out at Old Trafford.

Swedish teenager Elanga was the only player from either team to miss in the shoot-out, leaving the forward holding his head in disbelief as Middlesbrough celebrated their stunning victory.

Jadon Sancho had put United ahead in the first half, but Matt Crooks grabbed a controversial equaliser after the interval to set the stage for Middlesbrough’s memorable upset.

Crooks’ goal was allowed to stand despite Duncan Watmore controlling the ball with his hand before providing the assist.

Cristiano Ronaldo had missed a first-half spot-kick for United, who have now lost seven of their last eight penalty shoot-outs, including last season’s Europa League final against Villarreal.

United had 30 shots in total but lacked the composure and cutting edge required to kill off supposedly inferior opponents.

United are without a major trophy in five years and their hopes of ending that drought are dwindling given their Premier League struggles and a tricky Champions League last 16 tie against Atletico Madrid.

Fernandes also missed a golden opportunity to restore the lead, shooting against the post with an empty net gaping in front of him.

United had lost their poise and Elanga was destined to finish as the fall-guy.

The FA Cup embarrassment is the latest hammer blow for United at the end of a painful week that saw their England forward Mason Greenwood arrested over the alleged rape and assault of a young woman.

Politics / Pelumi Olajengbesi: Ambode Should Learn From Obaseki, Godfathers Can Be Unseated by Loveurneighbour: 5:16pm On Feb 02, 2022
A Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has urged former governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, to learn from Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who defeated ‘godfatherism’ with his reelection in September 2020.

According to Olajengbesi, godfathers can be unseated as power only belongs to God and not any mortal.

The PDP House of Representatives aspirant from Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency in Osun State in 2019 was reacting to the comment of Ambode on Tuesday that youths should get their Permanent Voters’ Cards ready for the 2023 general elections.

Ambode’s Facebook post on Tuesday has since sparked fresh public discourse as to whether he wants to run for office in 2023 but he has not declared any intention.

“By breaking his political silence since he was kicked out by the godfathers of Lagos politics in the build-up to the 2019 governorship election, Ambode maybe aspiring something in 2023. Whilst he has not declared that he wants to return to office, time will tell if he wants to vie for any political office in the country.

“However, one consensus in the court of public discourse is that Ambode’s political turbulence in the 2019 governorship election showed how godfathers had monopolised the political space in Nigeria,” the lawyer said on Wednesday in a statement titled, ‘Ambode should learn from Obaseki, godfathers can be unseated’.

Ambode, who came into office in 2015 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, was kicked in 2019 after he fell out with APC leader and strong man of Lagos politics, Bola Tinubu, who had anointed Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the next governor of Lagos.

Though Ambode had gone ahead to contest the party primary, he lost to Sanwo-Olu who was staunchly backed by Tinubu.

“But Ambode chickened out unlike Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who, in 2020, fought his former godfather, Adams Oshiomhole, and won,” Olajengbesi noted.

“Obaseki swiftly moved to the Peoples Democratic Party, clinched the ticket of the party and his returned to office, thanks to the objectivity and non-partisanship of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“If Obaseki, with the overwhelming support of the electorate, was able to dislodge and shame the godfathers of Edo politics, Ambode, with the acceptance of Lagosians, can wrestle the soul of Lagos from godfathers who have literally turned the state to their private property.

“Overall, Ambode’s political fate in 2023 will be anchored on so many things but one indispensable leadership attribute Ambode cannot afford not to have a full dose of going into 2023 is courage; courage to dare the godfathers, courage for freedom from the shadows of the self-imposed kingmakers. Godfathers can be unseated, the only power that be is of God, not any mortal.”

The PUNCH had earlier reported that a former spokesman for the PDP in Lagos, Ganiu Taofik, said Ambode has some chances to return as Lagos governor in 2023 if he joins the PDP.

Politics / Some Northerners Made It Difficult For Jonathan To Defeat Boko Haram – Babangida by Loveurneighbour: 1:59pm On Jan 30, 2022
Former governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, shares his thoughts with AISHA WAKASO on the zoning of the presidency, insecurity in the country and other issues

As a former governor, what will you say were some of your legacies in Niger State?

I have set a standard for any governor to be judged in terms of what he has done or what he has not done. We mobilised the people to appreciate what governance is all about particularly by creating that fourth tier of government which is the ward level, where we went to make them feel like there is also a government at the ward level. When I see people tell me they would not have been in school if not for my coming as a governor, believe me it’s a relief from the other noise that comes from people. I see a retired person telling me thank you very much, you have paid us everything that was due to us.

When I became Niger State governor, I discovered that there were some of them who after 12 years of retirement had not even collected a kobo and many of them really died but we paid their families or their next of kin. I am happy that after we left, people were able to judge, they have been judging in our favour. After you leave office, you hear a lot of things but on the average, you find that people are even calling you to come back. I am happy that God has given me the opportunity to serve Niger State at that level.

You once described Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo as the best candidate for the APC. Some think as a PDP chieftain, you were unduly meddling into the ruling party’s affairs, what would you say about this?

I am a Nigerian and every Nigerian should be interested in who leads Nigeria. We have seen where in a situation of coup-d’etat we had no much to say in such situations but now that we are in a democracy, every Nigerian should be able to know the kind of people that lead us. More so, when it is said that people get the kind of government they deserve, meaning if you are a bad people, there is no way you can produce good government or good leaders. Therefore, my interest is that whether it is PDP or APC, let good people be recognised and be the ones elected into offices. A situation where our system has made it almost impossible for good people to present themselves for election and only those who have declared for party are entitled is not good. There is no room for independent candidate because of the nature of the people in the party. We don’t sit to say look, what kind of qualities are we looking for in governance? We need to appreciate, why is it that today, over 50 years after the assassinations of our leaders, we still remember them more? Why is that so? It is simply because they have shown some credible integrity; they have shown the qualities of good governance we require today.

For me, it is not a question of you are in the party, you must not talk about the other party, and in a situation where everyone thinks he must be the president of the country, it is not right.

There must be a yardstick where you will know that that office is not for you because of this and that, but when everybody wakes up and wants to be president, then you know that they want to be president for the wrong reasons. If you look at today, amongst all those who have indicated interest either publicly or privately, I’ll have Osinbajo because we have seen what he has done so far as the Vice President and the few times he has acted, what has transpired. Then I have my friend in Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi in the same APC. For me, I think there is a limit as to who and who should be where and at a given time but the presidency of this country should not be seen as a position where people would say they must be president. I don’t think that’s right and I will advise Nigerians that whether they are in the party system or not, to be very much interested in who governs us.

You also said recently that the PDP had zoned the presidency to the North, only for your party to deny your claim. What is your take on this?

As far as I know, there was never a meeting to say this has been zoned to this particular place. If some people felt that by zoning the chairmanship to the North will automatically mean that the presidential candidate must automatically come from the South, this has now been blunted by saying anyone from any corner of the country can now contest. We can’t have a situation where every little thing is looked at in the prism of “we must breakup, we must do this, and we must do that.” I know that some people don’t know how to argue their own case; they always go to the extreme but we can’t afford that at every moment. We question the sovereignty and that is why I believe that we agreed that every person can contest. That may not stop the PDP later on, maybe when we see that the whole purpose of a party is to win election, to articulate its position and sell it to the people and win election. You don’t have a party simply for having a party. A party is supposed to articulate, aggregate the interest of the people and really win elections and if you can’t win elections after a given time, you better change your tactics.

Insecurity has been a major challenge in the North. Some local government areas in Niger State have been taken over by terrorists. How do you think this challenge can become a thing of the past?

It is really unfortunate that we have allowed the situation to reach this level, and let me say again, I don’t want to be misconstrued as being in that group- this is a cumulative issue. When Boko Haram started and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan’s government started doing something about it, it fell on former President Jonathan to carry on. Many northerners misconstrued his (Jonathan) position at that time and for political purposes, they threw many arguments that made it impossible for the proper articulation and proper implementation of policies that would have got rid of Boko Haram and now, we still have them till today. The banditry that many of us thought was impossible to happen, I am yet to hear from anybody about the statement credited to Kawu Baraje, our former PDP national chairman in Kwara State, when he stated that they brought the bandits or Fulani from other places. I think based on the thinking that probably former President Jonathan wouldn’t have handed over power even if they had won, but he handed over. He congratulated them even before the conclusion proper counting of votes which then took away whatever purposes of bringing those people would have served and I would have thought that if that is true, then those who brought them in would compensated them to go back to where they came from.

I believe if the governors had really done a lot from 2015 to date, we would have got rid of the banditry but today, it’s so unfortunate that you probably have to be praying when you leave Abuja for Kaduna or Kaduna to Abuja or indeed, particularly in the northern states. Any road that you follow, you probably need a lot of prayers and this is contrary to the position before where many of us were driving from one place to the other, used to sleep in the daytime so we can drive at night when there will be less traffic, less noise. Now, even in the day time, you can’t drive freely and comfortably. So, I believe that the first port of call for fighting insecurity is the governors. Maybe you heard me in Kano when I was saying could one be greater than 19 because at one time, even though the circumstances were different, we had one man for 19 states and now, we have 19 governors and still, we have more problems than we did the last time.

We need to look at how our people are really enjoying their lives and unemployment. Before, we used to beg parents to allow them take their wards to school. Now, they have allowed them to go to school. Many of them have been uprooted from their local culture, many of them are farmers and now, they can’t go back to their farms. They have had their degrees or whatever courses they have gone for and now, unemployment is facing them for five years, six years and thereafter, we are not thinking of any innovation to engage them.

Crime / Niger: Gunmen Invade Community, Engage Special Hunters In Fierce Gun Battle by Loveurneighbour: 9:51pm On Jan 29, 2022
From John Adams, Minna

About 50 gunmen are currently engaging the Niger State Joint Security Task Force in a fierce gun battle at Galadiman Kogo in Shiroro Local Government Area, with heavy casualties on both sides, reports on the ground indicate.

The gunmen are said to have lunched the attack on the security camp in the community this afternoon at about 3:00 pm.

Although details of casualties are inconclusive as of this report, a source close to the community told our correspondent that there are casualties were sustained on both sides of the engagement.

According to a source close to the community, the gunmen were seen this morning moving towards the area. ‘We did not know that they were coming to attack the special hunters in Galadiman Kogo,’ the source said.

The fresh attack comes barely four days after the Joint Security Task Force neutralised scores of the gunmen in communities around Shiroro and Munya Local Government Areas, and recovered well over 500 animals.

The Chairman of Shiroro LGA, Mallam Suleiman Chukuba, confirmed the ongoing gun battle between the security agents and the gunmen, saying that ‘there are no details yet but we are trying to make contact with the people.’

Only Thursday about 100 people were abducted from Tungan Bako in Rafi LGA by gunmen after killing two people.

Politics / Clark:Saraki’s Best For Nigeria,i’ll Support Him If South Fails To Produce Cand. by Loveurneighbour: 5:20pm On Jan 29, 2022
Yusuph Olaniyonu

South-South political chieftain Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark has spoken about the presidential aspiration of Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki describing him as “The Best for Nigeria.”

Chief Clark made the statement in Abuja when the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Contact and Advocacy Council, headed by its National Chairman, Prof Iyorwuese Hagher, paid him a courtesy call to inform him about the plan of the former Senate President to contest the 2023 presidential election.

During the visit, the group spoke on the need for national cohesion through the emergence of a presidential candidate who, over time, has shown character and competence to deliver on national issues.

In his remarks, Clark emphasised the need to present a credible candidate who understands the dynamics in every part of Nigeria, citing the fact that Saraki possessed all the qualities.

Clark also noted the sterling performance of Saraki in the 8th Senate, while emphasizing that if the Southern part of the country failed to produce a consensus candidate, he would support Saraki’s presidential ambition.

“We have been agitating for the presidency to be zoned to the south. However, if we fail to come up with a consensus candidate in the South, I will have no option than to support Dr Bukola Saraki,” Chief Clark declared.

The delegation included Sen Solomon Ewuga, Sen Bello Adokwe, Hon Idem Unyime, Hon Moses Aliyu, and other prominent PDP chieftains.

Health / The Latest Covid Variant Is 1.5 Times More Contagious Than Omicron by Loveurneighbour: 3:57pm On Jan 29, 2022
The latest Covid variant is 1.5 times more contagious than omicron and already circulating in almost half of U.S. states

There are already dozens of cases across almost half of the U.S. of a new Covid subvariant that's even more contagious than the already highly transmissible omicron variant.

Nearly half of U.S. states have confirmed the presence of BA.2 with at least 127 known cases nationwide as of Friday, according to a global data base that tracks Covid variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a statement Friday, said although BA.2 has increased in proportion to the original omicron strain in some countries, it is currently circulating at a low level in the U.S.

The subvariant is 1.5 times more transmissible than the original omicron strain, referred to by scientists as BA.1, according to Statens Serum Institut, which conducts infectious disease surveillance for Denmark.

The new sublineage doesn't appear to further reduce the effectiveness of vaccines against symptomatic infection, according to the U.K. Health Security.

"Currently there is no evidence that the BA.2 lineage is more severe than the BA.1 lineage," CDC spokesperson Kristen Nordlund said.

BA.2 overtook the original omicron as the dominant variant in Denmark over the course of a few weeks, said Troels Lillebaek, the chairman of the Scandinavian nation's committee that conducts surveillance of Covid variants.

BA.1 and BA.2 have many differences in their mutations in the most important areas. In fact, the difference between BA.1 and BA.2 is greater than the difference between the original "wild strain" and the Alpha variant, which was the first major mutation to take root across the world.

The BA.2 variant has five unique mutations on a key part of the spike protein the virus uses to attach to human cells and invade them, Lillebaek told CNBC. Mutations on this part of the spike, known as the receptor binding domain, are often associated with higher transmissibility.

The U.K. Health Security Agency on Friday said BA.2 has a "substantial" growth advantage over the original omicron. The sister variant spread faster than the original omicron in all regions of England where there were enough cases to conduct an analysis, according to the agency.

However, a preliminary assessment found that BA.2 doesn't appear to reduce the effectiveness of vaccines any more than the original omicron. A booster dose was 70% effective at preventing symptomatic illness from BA.2 two weeks after receiving the shot, compared with 63% effectiveness for the original omicron strain.

The World Health Organization has not labeled BA.2 a variant of concern. However, WHO officials have repeatedly warned that new variants will arise as omicron spreads across the world at an unprecedented rate. Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's Covid-19 technical lead, warned on Tuesday that the next Covid will variant be more transmissible.

"The next variant of concern will be more fit, and what we mean by that is it will be more transmissible because it will have to overtake what is currently circulating," Van Kerkhove said. "The big question is whether or not future variants will be more or less severe."

Lillebaek said there is not enough data yet to determine whether BA.2 is able to reinfect people who caught the original omicron. However, prior infection would likely provide some crossover immunity to BA.2.

Pfizer and Moderna started clinical trials this week on omicron-specific shots amid growing concern that new variants will emerge as immunity induced by the original vaccines wanes.

New Covid cases are increasing in Denmark, with more than 50,000 new infections reported on Friday in a country of 5.8 million people, according to the country's health ministry. Lillebaek said it's safe to assume that BA.2 is driving the increase of new infections in Denmark right now.

New hospital admissions in Denmark rose by 12 for a total of 967 patients who are Covid positive. Lillebaek said this increase is likely within the limits of what the health system can manage. However, he noted that 80% of Danes are fully vaccinated and 60% have received booster shots.

"If you are in a community or living in a country where you have a low vaccination rate, then you will have for sure more admissions to hospital and more severe cases and then more going to ICU," he said.

In the U.S., about 67% of those eligible are fully vaccinated, according to data from the CDC.

Politics / Fuel Subsidy: After Seven Years, Buhari Transfers Burden To Successor by Loveurneighbour: 7:35am On Jan 29, 2022
After seven years of battling and failing to deliver promises on fuel subsidy, the Muhmmadu Buhari-led administration has resolved to transfer the burden to the next government.

After weeks of apprehension over the fate of fuel subsidy, the Federal Executive Council announced the extension of the fuel subsidy regime for 18 months, in essence, the current regime would have elapsed by then, leaving the successor to inherit the burden.

Within the next 18 months, the administration will spend N3trillion on PMS subsidy. The decision to extend the subsidy period followed pressure from labour groups, civil societies and a cross-section of Nigerians.

Despite the Petroleum Industry Act and the reform of NNPC as a limited liability company, the government will continue the subsidy regime.

In this analysis, DAILY POST reviews the measures taken by the government to address subsidy and impact of those measures on Nigeria and Nigerians.

Buhari as Petroleum Minister

Buhari, a former Minister of Petroleum announced himself as substantive Minister of Petroleum in 2015 amid high expectations.

Before his emergence as President, Buhari had claimed that anyone who says he is paying oil subsidies is a fraud.

During electioneering campaign trail in 2014, Buhari continued to deny the existence of subsidy, thereby constantly accusing the then government under the leadership of Goodluck Jonathan of deceiving Nigerians.

“Nigerians are being deceived on the issue of fuel subsidy. The federal government takes out fuel for refining, only to come back and talk about removing the subsidy. That is nonsense and an attempt by a clique with the PDP-led federal government to siphon the proceeds to be realised from the removal of oil subsidy,” he had said.

But as a president, Buhari has failed to address fuel subsidies and his government continues to pay what he had described as “fraud” and “deception”.

Under recovery by NNPC

Since the beginning of this administration, the NNPC became the sole importer of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) and has been making deductions from its revenue. This action has led to NNPC claiming it has no profit to remit to the federation.

Mele Kyari, the Group managing director of NNPC, last year, said the corporation was paying N100billion monthly to keep the price of PMS at the current level.

On May 11, 2016, petrol pump prices were hiked from N87/litre to N145/litre. Following this increment, the government claimed it had “removed subsidy for good.” Vice President Yemi Osibanjo then announced the end of subsidy.

The then Minister of Petroleum (State) Ibe Kachikwu, even claimed that prices of PMS will collapse six months after the 2016 “removal of subsidy.”

However, it later emerged that NNPC was paying subsidy but not from budgetary allocation, but through under-recovery.

The crash in oil prices globally due to COVID-19 pandemic led to reduction in the pump price of PMS, from N145 per litre to N125 per litre. Following the rebound in the prices of oil, the pump price jumped to N162 per litre.

In March 2021, the defunct PPPRA had announced the planned increment of petrol to N212 per litre, following outcry, the government made a U-turn and disowned PPPRA’s announcement.

Despite this, Kyari continued to express the inevitable hike in price of fuel.

Last month, an ad hoc committee constituted by the National Economic Council, chaired by Governor Nasir Elrufai of Kaduna State, had recommended N302 per litre as price of PMS.

Politics / Subsidy: NNPC May Deduct Over ₦1 Trilion From FAAC In Six Months by Loveurneighbour: 6:53am On Jan 26, 2022
cryFigures obtained from the oil firm on its subsidy deductions in 2021 indicated that the amount deducted monthly from FAAC by the NNPC was higher during the periods of higher crude oil prices.

This was also confirmed by economists, who explained that the higher the international price of crude oil, the higher the amount to be deducted by the NNPC from FAAC.

They also stated that the volume of petrol consumed in a particular month was contributory to the amount being spent as subsidy, but insisted that the major factor was the global crude oil price.

As the sole importer of PMS and supplier of last resort, the NNPC ensures adequate supply of refined petroleum products by importing the commodities.

PMS is not deregulated by the Federal Government, as the price is sold at between N162 and N165/litre at filling stations, far lower than the actual cost of the commodity.

In June 2021, the Group Managing Director, NNPC, Mele Kyari, had stated that petrol price should be more than N280/litre, while the commodity had been subsidised and sold at N162/litre since last year.

The subsidy spent on each litre of petrol consumed in Nigeria is therefore recovered by NNPC through its monthly deductions from its remittances to FAAC.

An analysis of the monthly FAAC deductions in 2021, captured by the NNPC as under-recovery of PMS/value shortfall, for instance, showed that the oil company deducted N25.37bn from FAAC in February 2021 when the average price of Brent crude was $62.28/barrel.

But in June of the same year when the price of Brent climbed to $73.16, the national oil firm reported that it spent N164.33bn on subsidy in that month.

Notably, between June and November 2021, a period of six months, the oil firm deducted N888.13bn from FAAC being subsidy spent on petrol imports. This comes to about N148bn monthly on the average.

The average cost of Brent crude during the six-month period, according to figures obtained from Statistica, a global statistical firm, was put at $76.4/barrel.

However, the price of Brent has been on the rise since this year, following efforts by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners to boost the cost of the commodity.

Politics / 2023: Afegbua Dumps Atiku, Roots For Southern Presidential Candidate by Loveurneighbour: 4:46pm On Jan 23, 2022
By Dirisu Yakubu – Abuja

Former spokesman of the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation in the 2019 elections and ex- Information Commissioner in Edo state, Prince Kassim Afegbua has urged the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to look beyond the former Vice President and cede its Presidential ticket to the South ahead of the 2023 general election.

Afegbua who played a prominent role in the crisis that led to the suspension of former PDP national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus also tasked the National Working Committee, NWC of the party led by Senator Iyorchia Ayu to leverage on its good start by going South to get its Presidential flag bearer in the next elections.

Premising his stand on the need for fairness and equity, the PDP chieftain also fingered Atiku’s age as a factor the party should consider, urging it to dump the former Vice President for a much younger candidate.

In a statement entitled, “2023: Atiku and the age of Methusalah politics,” Afegbua warned Atiku to give younger Nigerians a chance lest he wears the tag of “a perpetual or professional candidate.”

The statement read in part, “With the abysmal performance of President Muhammadu Buhari on account of age, incompetence and lack of capacity and political will to take deliberate and sustained action to bail out the country from all manner of challenges, it will be immoral for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to continue to express interest in seeking election in the 2023 Presidential election having attained the retirement age.

“He cannot assume the role of a perpetual candidate or professional aspirant year in, year out, of the party as though the party was established for him alone. It defeats all sense of logic for such an old man to attempt another round of political contestation at a time the general feeling and mood in the country supports a younger Nigerian from the Southern extraction of the country.

“For me, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar should quit his quest for Presidency and support a Southern Nigerian candidate in the spirit of fairness, equity and justice, that will assuage the feelings of stakeholders from the Southern part of Nigeria. It will be against the run of play and natural justice for any aspirant of Northern extraction to show interest in the 2023 presidential election within the Peoples’ Democratic Party threshold.

“It will offend national sentiments, emotions and logic for anyone from the North to show such interest given our diversities and heterogenous political configurations. Given PDP’s doctrine of political power balancing and fairness, it will be against its own unwritten rule to cede the ticket to any Northern aspirant least of all, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“Having concluded the convention of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, with a new leadership that looks promising, the Party will have to rise above board to produce a Presidential candidate from the Southern part of the country to complete the narrative.

In a familiar narrative that has seen some PDP stalwarts kicked against Atiku’s interest in the 2023 Presidency, Afegbua argued that the former Vice President abandoned the party shortly after the 2019 elections, as some of its leaders were allegedly persecuted by agents of the ruling party.

He continued: “After the 2019 Presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar abandoned all of us in Nigeria and sought refuge in far away Dubai, thus exposing us to the intimidations, harassment and threats posed by the desperate All Progressives Congress, APC’s power oligarchs.

“It was a case of a General abandoning his troops in the battle field. Rather than draw strength from his presence, his absence exposed us to all manner of challenges. He was in Dubai and left us to our fate.

“The Southern geo-political zones of Nigeria have eminently qualified Nigerians and parade great minds who are competent and ready to take a shot at the number one job. Those who are advancing very nebulous theory of seeing the Northern population as a stimulant to win the sympathy of the North against the South are either ignorant of the real demographics or at best, just playing the ostrich.

“No one in the North should take away what belongs to the South. That will be hurting the consciences and feelings of the average Southerner. If the argument is to suffice for example, for an Atiku Presidency, he will be finishing his first term of four years at age 81. And were he to become a candidate in 2023 again, and per adventure he loses the election, are we, as PDP, going to reserve the position for him or any other Northerner in 2027?

“These are very curious scenarios which cannot be overlooked. For 2023, an Atiku candidacy will be like promoting an expired product in the face of very compelling reason to look down South in our quest to wrestle power from the fractured APC.

“Earlier last year, I was conscripted into the Technical Committee for Atiku Presidency. Having attended three meetings of the group, I found my spirit and conscience permanently in conflict with the ethos of justice, fairness and equity, which the south deserves. A Nigerian of Southern extraction deserves to be given unfettered opportunity to represent the party in the 2023 presidential contest.

“Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his Northern aspirants should support the aspiration of an upwardly mobile and younger elements from the South to fly the PDP flag. Anything short of such will be tantamount to standing logic on its head, and a deliberate attempt to undermine the collective interest and aspirations of the Southern aspirants.

“I will therefore implore the new management and members of the National Executive Committee, NEC of the PDP as well as the National Working Committee to speak with one voice in ensuring that the South is given what is due to it.

“Doing that, will mean promoting the fundamental principles of democracy of all inclusiveness and participation. Let it be known that I will not hesitate to commence the process of mobilizing, sensitizing and conscientizing like minds and team up with other stakeholders to drum up the necessary support that will birth a Southern candidate for the party. Justice should not only be served, it must be seen to have been served.

“Nigerians in their millions are tired of seeing the faces of persons who have dominated the political space in the last forty years and yet, unwilling to take a bow. In the spirit of the new thinking and paradigm shift, please tell them to allow us to breathe,” he added.

Health / COVID-19: With 29 Cases, Nigeria Records Lowest Daily Infections In 2022 by Loveurneighbour: 12:35pm On Jan 23, 2022
ByMariam Ileyemi January 23, 2022

The fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic appears to have ended in Nigeria, as the country, on Saturday, recorded 29 new infections across three states of the federation.

The latest statistics released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday, which indicates a significant decrease in the figure of newly confirmed cases, also confirmed that no death was recorded on Saturday.

This is coming after the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, announced the end of the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the state.

Statistics

The disease centre noted that the fatality toll remains at 3,124 since Friday, when it recorded one death.

The data shows that the infection toll has increased by 29 to 251,959, while the discharged cases stand at 225,946, with no backlog of discharged cases reported.

The breakdown of the data revealed that Lagos State, the epicentre of the disease, recorded 27 of the 29 new infections, while Kano in the North-west and Rivers State in the South-south reported a single case each.

NCDC also noted that four states: Anambra, Bauchi, Plateau and Sokoto reported that they recorded no cases on Saturday.NCDC also noted that four states: Anambra, Bauchi, Plateau and Sokoto reported that they recorded no cases on Saturday.

Fourth wave ends
Mr Abayomi on Saturday, announced the end of the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, as the daily infection figure from the virus declines.

The health commissioner said there was a reduction in positivity rates of COVID-19 infection from 29.3 per cent recorded on December 21, to 1.9 per cent as of January 20.

According to him, bed capacity utilisation now stands at two per cent, and fatality rate stands at 0.71 per cent.

On December 7, 2021, the governor had alerted Nigerians of an impending fourth wave of the pandemic, blaming the development on the non-adherence to preventive measures by Nigerians.

NCDC also confirmed the fourth wave, a few weeks after, as the country recorded a 500 per cent increase in the number of confirmed cases within two weeks.

The director-general of the disease centre, Ifedayo Adefila, who announced the fourth wave in a statement, noted that the rise in infections was linked to both the Delta and Omicron variants of the rampaging virus.

According to Mr Adefila, the surge in infections, which began on December 9, continued to rise with the country recording over 7,500 cases within two weeks, while the number of active COVID-19 cases skyrocketed from 3,000 to over 9,000.
