Politics / 2023: ‘It Will Not Happen’: INEC Says Its Chairman Won’t Contest For President by Loveurneighbour: 5:38pm On May 08, 2022
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, will not join the 2023 presidential race, the commission has said.

In a statement published on its Twitter handle Sunday morning, INEC said its chairman will definitely not join the presidential race.

“It is a preposterous proposition. It will not happen,” the commission said of suggestions Mr Yakubu could throw his hat into the ring.

“The Chairman remains an umpire committed to free, fair and credible elections,” Rotimi Oyekanmi, Mr Yakubu’s chief press secretary, wrote in the statement.

Many Nigerians had joked on social media that with the number and diversity of persons declaring interest in the presidential race, even the INEC boss may declare an ambition.

About 25 people have bought the presidential nomination forms of the ruling party, APC, while 17 people bought the presidential nomination forms of the main opposition party, PDP. This is despite both parties fixing what many Nigerians considered exorbitant prices for their forms.

The APC presidential nomination form is sold for N100 million while that of the PDP is sold for N40 million.

Both parties are expected to hold their primaries and elect their candidates by the end of May.

Foreign Affairs / Evil Has Returned, Zelensky Says On World War II Anniversary by Loveurneighbour: 3:18pm On May 08, 2022
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that “evil has returned” to Europe, comparing Russia’s invasion to Nazi Germany during an address commemorating World War II.

“Decades after World War II, darkness has returned to Ukraine, and it has become black and white again,” Zelensky said in a video address, in which he was filmed standing in front of destroyed residential buildings.

“Evil has returned, in a different uniform, under different slogans, but for the same purpose,” he added, in the video showing archive footage of World War II and black and white footage of Russia’s invasion.

The Ukrainian leader accused Russia of implementing a “bloody reconstruction of Nazism,” in his country using “its ideas actions, words and symbols.”

He said Moscow’s army was replicating Nazi atrocities and giving justification that aimed to give this evil a sacred purpose.

Zelensky appealed to European nations including the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands, by likening Nazi bombings of their towns and cities to Russian strikes on urban hubs in Ukraine.

Ex-Soviet Ukraine was invaded by Russia in late February and Moscow claimed its operation was in part to “de-Nazify” the country.

Both Ukraine and Russia had likened actions by the other side’s army to those of Nazi Germany, whose defeat by the Soviet Union in 1945 is celebrated in ex-Soviet countries on May 9.

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed in an address that “as in 1945, victory will be ours”, congratulating former Soviet nations on the 77th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat.

Culture / It’s Impossible For Ifa To Choose Illiterate As Next Alaafin –Owoade Family Head by Loveurneighbour: 5:00am On May 08, 2022
The Mogaji of the Owoade Ruling Family in Oyo, Prince Adediwura Owoade, tells OLUFEMI OLANIYI that the family has been cheated for long in the selection of Alaafin and the members are ready to fight to the finish this time

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, recently joined his ancestors. How long will it take to mourn him before the process of selecting a new one will begin?

The period of mourning used to be 41 days in the olden days. By that time, the wives of the departed Alaafin would have completed the mourning rites and they would leave the palace.

If they leave the palace at the end of the 41 days of mourning, will they go to their houses or where will they go?

The choice is for them to make whether to be inherited by the new Oba or they will go to their various houses. If they want to stay, they will be taken over by the new Oba.

So, they can be allowed to go and re-marry?

They can go and re-marry elsewhere.

Do they need to undergo any spiritual cleansing if they choose to remarry outside the palace?

That is left to be decided by the traditionalists. I can’t say much about that. They know what to do.

How many ruling houses are eligible to fill the vacant stool of the Alaafin?

We have only two ruling houses and they are the Alowolodu, which is the ruling house that produced the immediate past Alaafin, Oba Adeyemi, and the Agunloye. These are the ruling houses.

But are the princes from Alowolodu Ruling House also eligible to contest this time round?

Yes, they can contest if any of them is interested. They can contest, but it’s our time now.

Despite that the last Oba came from the ruling house?

Yes.

So many had ascended the Alaafin throne and you are saying there are just two ruling houses. How come they are not more than two?

Many of those you are referring to reigned before this present Oyo came into existence. This present Oyo is Oyo Atiba. Atiba reigned from 1837-1859. Alaafin Adelu from the Agunloye Ruling House from 1859 to 1875; Alaafin Adeyemi I (Alowolodu Ruling House) reigned from 1876-1905. After that, there came Lawani Agogo Ija ( Agunloye). Lawani ascended the throne in 1905 and died in 1911. After Lawani, his son, Ladigbolu, came in as the next Alaafin (1911-1944). After the departure of Ladigbolu I, Adeniran Adeyemi II came in (1945-1955) and was the father of the immediate past Alaafin. After him came Bello Gbadegesin, a son of Ladigbolu from 1956-1968, and after him, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III came.

So, where does the Owoade Ruling Family come in?

Lawani had three children before he ascended the throne and they were Ladigbolu, Owoade and Rabi, the only female child. The three were given birth to by Awero. I have shown you her grave. Those were the children born by Awero to Lawani. Owoade and Rabi lived together when their brother was on the throne. Owoade built this house where we are for their mother, because they could not live with their brother, who was reigning as the Alaafin in the palace.

As you said now, Ladigbolu reigned first but when another opportunity came to the Agunloye Ruling Family to produce another Alaafin, why did Bello Gbadegesin, who was Ladigbolu’s son ascend the throne and not someone from the Owoade family?

Bello Gbadegesin’s emergence had political undertones. It was during a political time. When Ladigbolu became the king, he made his brother the Aremo, although his son was supposed to be the Aremo.

Politics / Umahi Accuses Ohanaeze Of Delaying Negotiation For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release by Loveurneighbour: 1:02pm On May 07, 2022
Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has accused the Igbo socio-cultural body, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, of delaying discussions with the Federal Government over Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

The governor made the claim on Friday when he featured on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“We wished that it should be solved and that’s why I went to Mr President. And our leader, Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi, has also gone to the President and he agreed for a political solution, but it should be us that should initiate it,” he said on Friday.

“And I am asking Ambassador Obiozor (Ohanaeze President), he is very slow about this because I had gone to the DG DSS. I had gone to the Attorney-General of the Federation and they were ready to receive them to discuss. I had excluded myself so that politics is not by any means adduced to it.”

“So, we should be encouraging the president of Ohanaeze to work with the IPOB leader as Mr President suggested and then let them, you know, bring something before the Federal Government and say, ‘These are what we are bringing on board.’ I think that the President is not averse to that,” the government added.

The governor, who said he foresaw the growing insecurity in the South East, reiterated that that was why his government opposed the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) from the onset.

He, however, said many people misunderstood him and “jumped into and used it for politics”. Umahi lamented that the situation is now “a pain in everybody’s eye” in the region.

Buhari’s ‘Worry’

President Buhari flanked by Governor Umahi during the inauguration of the project.

Umahi’s comment followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the state where the Nigerian leader commissioned several projects.

During the visit, leaders of the South East region pleaded with the Nigerian leader for the release of Kanu who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

But Buhari told the Ebonyi State Stakeholders’ Forum at the Government House in Abakaliki on Friday, that only the court can decide the IPOB leader’s fate.

“I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders, regarding a wide range of options,” he said. “And as I have said previously, this matter remains in the full purview of the court where it will be properly adjudicated.

“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians for whom life is already tough and will like to just go out and earn a decent and honest living.”

Crime / Two Suspected IPOB Fighters, Policeman Killed During Gun Battle In Imo by Loveurneighbour: 11:39am On May 07, 2022
A policeman has been killed alongside two suspected militants of the Indigenous People of Biafra during a gun battle in Agwa, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.
The incident happened on Friday when operatives of Imo State Police Command’s Tactical Teams exchanged gun with the fighters, suspected to be members of IPOB and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN), according to a police release.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Michael Abattam, in a statement, said other policemen were injured but had been taken and treated at the hospital for the minor injuries they sustained.
According to the police spokesman, corpses of the hoodlums were later deposited in the Federal Medical Centre’s mortuary in Owerri, while investigation was ongoing.
“ESN members in their numbers emerged from the surrounding bushes, shooting sporadically at the policemen while conducting stop and search duty.
“The officers, who swiftly took cover and responded, engaged them in a fierce gun duel, while they called for backup from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Agwa.
“On arrival, they positioned themselves strategically and professionally engaged the hoodlums in a fire fight. For the operatives’ superior firepower and number, they were able to neutralise two of the hoodlums while others fled in disarray with bullet wounds into the bush.
“The police operatives tactically chased the hoodlums, in the process, combing the bush for possible recoveries of their arms and arrest of the fleeing suspects. However, two locally made double barrel guns with seven live cartridges and ten expended cartridges were recovered at the scene.”
The Commissioner of Police, Imo Command, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde, while consoling with the family of the officer who lost his life gallantly, advised the officers and men not to relent in their efforts until all criminal elements are apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.
He then appealed to Imo residents to give continuous support and collaboration to the security agencies and to report any person seen treating bullet wounds or hiding within the community, to the nearest police station for prompt action.

Foreign Affairs / UK Recovers $23m Abacha Loot After 7 Years Of Litigation by Loveurneighbour: 9:16am On May 07, 2022
The National Crime Agency (NCA) of the United Kingdom (UK) has issued a statement claiming it has recovered $23,439,724 taken out of Nigeria illegally by associates and family of the late former military ruler, Sani Abacha.

NCA, in the statement via its website on Thursday, said the funds form part of the huge monies identified by the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) as having been misappropriated by Abacha and his associates.

The UK anti-graft agency said that the funds were recovered after nearly seven years of litigation and international negotiation to obtain a recovery order after a request for recovery by USDOJ.

It added that the funds have now been transferred to the home office for onward transmission to the USDOJ.

Speaking on the development, asset denial senior manager at NCA, Billy Beattie, said the UK is not a safe place for criminals to launder their proceeds of crime.

Beattie said, “The NCA is committed to ensuring that the UK is not a safe haven for criminals to launder their proceeds of crime, and civil recovery of assets is a powerful weapon in this fight.”

The Nigerian government has in the last 20 years since the death of Abacha in 1998, been repatriating huge amount of money stashed in foreign banks by the late dictator and his associates.

Politics / A Sacrifice We Should Make’ — Atiku Preaches Unity To Lagos PDP Delegates by Loveurneighbour: 8:53am On May 07, 2022
Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, has appealed to leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos to unite ahead of the 2023 general election.

Atiku spoke on Friday during a consultation meeting with leaders and delegates of the PDP at the Ikoyi residence of Bode George, a chieftain of the PDP, in Lagos.

He told the delegates that it is important for the PDP in the state to come under one umbrella as it’ll ensure the party wins the state as well as boost the party’s chances in the presidential election.

“As you all know, the major theme of my campaign is unity. But I think we should share the same gospel of unity with the PDP in Lagos State. This call will require shifting of position and common understanding. But this is the sacrifice that we all have to make to ensure that the PDP wins Lagos state,” he said.

“I have talked to leaders and elders of the party inside and I made a similar call on them. I am here with all of you too who are esteemed members of our party to please give the necessary support to our leaders and elders in making sure that the party is united.”

In his remarks, George said the message of Atiku about unity is well taken and is an appeal that he is committed to.

“It is not in doubt that Atiku knows Nigeria very well and Nigeria knows him too. The next election is the last battle of Berlin and it is necessary that we go into it with all the power and elements that we have,” he said.

“In Lagos PDP, we shall be united. It is what we must do to win the next election.

“In this upcoming election, Nigeria needs someone with the experience, capacity and deep knowledge of this country and you, Waziri, fits into that perfectly.

“We wish you well in your campaign. I like the way you ended your remark about winning Lagos for the people of Lagos. We must end the era of Lagos belonging to a stranger.”

Crime / Ekiti Prince To Die By Hanging For Killing Monarch by Loveurneighbour: 6:08am On May 06, 2022
An Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, has sentenced a 42-year-old prince, Ademola Omoniyi, to death by hanging for killing the traditional ruler of his community.

Omoniyi was arraigned on one count of murder contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. C16, Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2012.

The charge read, “Ademola Stephen Omoniyi on August 20, 2018, at Odo Oro Ekiti in the Ikole Ekiti Judicial Division, murdered His Royal Majesty, Oba Gbadebo Ibitoye Olowoselu ll, the Onise of Odo Oro Ekiti in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State.”

A chief who testified before the court said, “We were at the palace on that day for the Onise-in-Council meeting around 7am. Before the commencement of the meeting, Ademola Omoniyi entered the palace and sat on kabiyesi’s seat, but the chiefs frowned on his action and drove him away.

In his judgment, Justice Olukayode Ogundana dispelled the claim that the defendant was insane.

"Consequently, the defendant, Omoniyi Ademola Stephen, is hereby sentenced to death and shall be hanged until he breathes his last,” the judge added.

Crime / We Can’t Kill Our Own Sister; IPOB Reacts To Murder Of Nigerian Army Couple by Loveurneighbour: 2:45pm On May 04, 2022
The Indigenous People of Biafra has denied its involvement in the murder of the Nigerian Army couple in Imo State.

SaharaReporters had reported how A.M Linus, a Master Warrant Officer in the army and his Private wife, Pte Gloria Matthew, were shot and beheaded on Saturday.

After beheading the couple, the gunmen were said to have called their family members to mock them.

A gory video of the incident seen by SaharaReporters showed the gunmen putting the heads on the victims' chests after the incident.

Reacting, the Nigerian Army accused IPOB and its military wing, Eastern Security Network of carrying out the dastardly act.

But in a statement on Wednesday signed by Emma Powerful, IPOB's spokesperson, the group said it had no hands in the murder of the soldiers, an incident it described as an abominable in Igbo tradition.

“No true Igbo will hurt an in-law, how much more a married daughter (Ada) in Igbo land. Even the ancestors will avenge such wickedness.

"Before the army jumped into their jaundiced conclusion that such an abominable act was masterminded by IPOB, what investigations did they carry out to substantiate their claims? When have gunmen or criminals recruited by evil politicians in connivance with the same security agencies in their desperation to demonise IPOB, become IPOB members?” the group queried.

It added, “The compromised Nigeria security agencies particularly the Nigeria military is behind the ongoing secret genocide in Biafra land under the guise of hunting for IPOB members while the real mass murderers are on the prowl in Northern Nigeria.

"They have always looked for an occasion to attack innocent Igbo youths. Who knows the number of innocent Biafrans they will rope in in the aftermath of this abominable act and tag them the suspects?

“The Nigeria Army should leave IPOB alone because we are not unknown gunmen and those who are pursuing them. The monster they created is now after them, yet they keep pointing accusing fingers at us.

We cannot kill our sister who is about to marry but those who killed them were those Nigerian government and its security agencies, especially the military and DSS created to demonise IPOB and ESN but your evil deeds are now hunting you.

“These agents of death some of whom we have made their identities public severally are behind the killings of these soldiers, not IPOB or ESN operatives. We are letting the world know that Nigeria Army and police are confused institutions. They are beclouded to see the truth because of their bias against us and delivering good jobs correctly.

"IPOB is, and will remain a non-violent movement. No amount of blackmail by the Nigeria Government and its compromised security agencies can make us change our resolve to restore Biafra through non-violence.”

Politics / 2023: I Was Charged For Murder, Armed Robbery – Wike by Loveurneighbour: 11:45am On May 03, 2022
By John Owen Nwachukwu

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has recalled how he was charged with murder and armed robbery before he became Obio/Akpo Council Chairman.

Wike said his journey to becoming the Local Government Chairman was not an easy one as he was subjected to court cases.

The Governor, who is contesting for the 2023 presidency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said this when he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“I contested election to be Obio/Akpo local government Chairman In 1998/9, and by the Grace of God I won,” Wike said.

“Obio/Akpo LGA is…people say one of the richest but I don’t want to use the word richest, [I rather say]one of the very most popular local governments the entire country cannot even do without…

A very important LG. So, you cannot preside over this important Local Government with all these major stakeholders of the economy and security of the nation…for you to preside over such then you know what Nigeria is all about.

"But before I became the Council Chairman it wasn’t easy because it is local government with so many interests both from Indigenes and those who are not from that area.

"For record purposes, I was the first person to become a Chairman that the Supreme Court had to affirm. It’s not a where anybody can be Chairman. No. It’s not correct.

"Because you have several interests Indigenous and from outside …it took me to go to Supreme Court to become the Chairman of the Council and I passed a lot of hurdles.

"I was charged for murder …I don’t know if you understand me? I was charged for armed robbery. So it’s not something that you think, oh, he just became a local government Chairman it wasn’t easy for me…”

Politics / Wike: My Grouse With Saraki, Tambuwal, Other Northern PDP Presidential Aspirants by Loveurneighbour: 8:25am On May 03, 2022
Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, on Monday, disclosed his grouse with former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, over zoning of the presidency to the South ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Wike said he had always supported presidential aspirants from the North, wondering why those he supported in the 2019 elections are now aspiring to be president in 2023.

He stated this while appearing on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, monitored from Abuja on Monday.

Wike claimed to have supported Tambuwal to become Speaker of the House of Representatives and Saraki to become Senate President against all odds.

The governor also noted that only Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State had personally expressed his support for his presidential bid.

When asked about his relationship with Saraki, Tambuwal and other governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Wike stated that the problem he had with Nigerians was that “people don’t want to tell the truth and I feel so bad.”

Wike said, “There is nobody today contesting for president of this country from the North that I did not have a relationship with or that I did not support. There are nine of them who have not come to me to say, ‘Wike, with you, I think I will have my way.’ And I always told them, ‘I agree, but what is on the ground; what is on the table?’

“If you ask most of my friends, the problem I have with friendship is that if we agree on something, let’s keep to it. If there is any reason why that shouldn’t be done, I should be notified.”

He added, “I will tell you one. Sadly, it is with one very intelligent young man Nigerians listen to – Bukola Saraki with all due respect. I was one of those who made sure he became a Senate President. He was in APC. I tweeted and spoke about his intelligence. Whether you hate him or you don’t like him, this young man is intelligent. Why would you not allow such a person to be at the helms of affairs? I never hid my feelings.

“My brother and friend, Tambuwal, when he wanted to be Speaker, the government and the PDP didn’t want him to be the Speaker. I was one of those who said no, we shouldn’t do that. I came out and said he should be Speaker. Even when he wanted to be president, I was one of those who said he was a vibrant young man and it didn’t matter; that we should not do it by age. People were fighting me all over…in the South, in the West, in the North, in the East. They all fought me. ‘Why are you bringing Tambuwal?” I said it was not about me bringing Tambuwal. I said I had found somebody that I thought had all it takes to lead.”

Wike stated that he had no apology to anybody for previously supporting Tambuwal and Saraki.

The governor stressed that he did not support the presidential bid of a former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar. Still, when Tambuwal lost to Abubakar at the primary, he gave all his support to the ex-VP.

Wike confirmed on the national TV programme, “I want to challenge anybody, any governor, any person in this party who would say they gave Atiku the support I gave. In fact, I can tell you that in the South-South, it was only in my state that APC never got 25 per cent (votes). Atiku knows that I came all out and supported him,” he added.

According to Wike, there was a gentleman’s agreement that power should remain in the North while it is shifted to the South in 2023.

Politics / 2023: Biafran Group, MASSOB, Ohanaeze Disown Uwazuruike For Rejecting Igbo Presi by Loveurneighbour: 6:00pm On May 02, 2022
The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra and a factional body of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have criticised pro-Biafra leader, Chief Ralph Uwazurike, for rejecting Igbo Presidency.
Uwazuruike had said he does not believe in the president of Igbo extraction stating that the contest should be thrown open.

He stated this when he led some South-East youths on Saturday in a solidarity march in Owerri, Imo State, in support of the 2023 presidential bid of Yahaya Bello, the Governor of Kogi State.
In separate statements, MASSOB and Ohanaeze slammed Uwazurike describing his action as unfortunate and a smacked betrayal of the struggle for Biafra agitations.
Ohanaeze in a statement issued by the President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, said Uwazurike’s action was not a surprise considering his precedent in betraying his fellow agitators for an Independent Biafran nation.
Okwu described Uwazuruike as one “ready to trade off himself for peanuts at every slightest opportunity.”

He further said the former MASSOB leader was “a persona non-grata, a serial betrayer and a man who had completely lost a sense of history,” further stating that “there were reports flying about that he did this volte-face after collecting N20 million.”
“We find it strange that he could sell his conscience just for a paltry N20m, to such an extent that a supposed pro-Biafra leader now talks so much about one Nigeria.
“However, we pity those who find anything meaningful in Uwazurike, a man who was dethroned as MASSOB leader because of the same reason. We know how he traded off the struggle in the past and was rewarded for betraying the same course he was pursuing,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze, however, cautioned Uwazurike and his likes to retrace their steps from a “destructive journey as the day of reckoning will surely come”, while maintaining that a million Uwazurike cannot stop the 2023 Igbo Presidency project.
Meanwhile, MASSOB, under Uchenna Madu, alleged that Uwazuruike hired some youths who paraded themselves as their members in Owerri conducting a political rally for the support of Bello’s presidential ambition.

The pro-Biafra group in a statement signed by its National Director of Information, Comrade Edeson Samuel, said their members were not in the rally.
The group stated, “MASSOB has never engaged or campaigned or rallied for any politician vying for political occupation in Nigeria. Our primary duty of existence is for Biafra’s actualisation and restoration through non-violence. We can never be agitating for Biafran autonomy and at the same time romancing with the major enemies of the people of Biafra.

"MASSOB warned Ralph Uwazuruike, the leader of Biafra Independent Movement to stop parading himself as MASSOB leader, and also to stop using MASSOB for merchandise.”
Edeson explained that Uwazuruike was expelled from MASSOB in November 2015 because of corruption and betrayal of trust/ confidence.
“Ralph Uwazuruike campaigning for the governor of Kogi state against his Igbo brother is nothing but to fulfil the agreement he signed with the Hausa Fulani cabals in 2013 and also to pay for the money he received from the governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello,” the statement partly read.

A 30-year-old man, Haruna Abdullahi, and 45-year-old Adamu Danjummai died in a pit toilet at Aku Village in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State while making efforts to recover a cell phone from a pit toilet.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, in Kano.

Abdullahi said the incident occurred on Sunday morning.

“We received an emergency call from Gaya fire station at about 07:15 a.m. from one Ali Ahmed, that two men had been trapped inside a pit toilet.

"The men were trying to bring out a cellphone that fell inside the pit toilet.

"We immediately sent our rescue team to the scene at about 07:25 a.m,’’ he said.

He said the victims were, however, brought out of the pit latrine unconscious and later confirmed dead while their corpses were handed over to the village head of Aku, Adamu Isyaku.

The Public Relations Officer said that Abdullahi entered the toilet with the intention to pick up his cellphone when he fell inside and got trapped, his brother Danjummai went inside to rescue him and he too got trapped.

Politics / Lecturers Partaking In Elections Not Representing Us – ASUU by Loveurneighbour: 4:21am On May 01, 2022
The Academic Staff Union of Universities said its members going to participate in the 2023 elections would be doing so on their own and would not be told them anything.

ASUU said it withdrew from participating in elections in Nigeria because the system was flawed.

The organisation said it had requested that it should be allowed by the Independent National Electoral Commission to participate in all the segments of the election, from the polling unit, collation and announcement for which government refused.

The President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said these in an interview with Sunday PUNCH.

He said, “ASUU participated (in election) during the period of (Prof. Attahiru) Jega and since then, we have decided we are not participating as a union in any election process because it is fraudulent.

“We requested that they should allow us participate in all the segments of the election, from the polling booth, to the collation to announcement. But they refused and so we withdrew from it as a union.

“And in the last (2019) election, we were very clear; we announced openly that we are not participating in 2019 election that any of our member who is going, is going as a person, not as an ASUU member which they are entitled to.

“So (in 2023), we are not going to tell our members anything. Anyone who wants to go is doing so on his own. When you are going, don’t wear anything that has ASUU signal, either its name or anything. You are going as a person; you are not going because you are a member of ASUU.

“During Jega (era), he asked us to nominate, which we did. Although at the upper collation level, we were able to control it, at the polling booth where they do the rigging, we were not allowed access to it, so we left.”

According to Osodeke the Vice Chancellors who took part as Returning Officers in elections have no influence but to announce results which have allegedly been written.

Politics / Eid Al Fitri: Buhari Approves Sallah Homage by Loveurneighbour: 5:20am On Apr 30, 2022
Guests to undergo linear COVID-19 test

By Johnbosco Agbakwuru

Two years after the world’s biggest lockdown to slow the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional Sallah homage to the President by the residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja returns to the Aso Rock Villa.

Although this is a sign of the return to normalcy as infection rates fall to their lowest, those coming on invitation are still required to wear face masks and undergo the linear Covid-19 test at the State House Conference Centre to obtain a negative test result as condition for admittance to the event.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

According to the statement, “President Muhammadu Buhari is set to receive the visitors, numbering about 100 at the New State House Banquet Hall at 3:00pm on Sallah Day (Sunday or Monday), itself to be determined by moon sighting to be announced by Islamic authorities in the country.

“Invited Guests for the event, led by Muhammed Musa Bello, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Head of Service, the Senator and House members from the territory, leadership of the FCT Judiciary, Members of the Cabinet, Service Chiefs and heads of security agencies, Muslim and Christian leaderships in the FCT, Council Chairmen, Traditional Rulers and others who received invitations as listed on the manifest.”

Politics / 2023 PDP Ticket: ‘waiting For Your Fight’ - Atiku’s Ally, Replies Bala's Camp by Loveurneighbour: 4:56am On Apr 30, 2022
By Wale Odunsi

Ehigie Uzamere, an ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has lambasted Governor Bala Mohammed’s camp amid a face-off over the 2023 presidential race.

Mohammed’s campaign spokesman, Prof Udenta O. Udenta had advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership to call Uzamere to order.

Udenta called Uzamere “a meddlesome interloper who peddles political dirt as a way of life” and threatened to dress him down.

“This will be our last restrained response to his unprovoked attack. Next time, we will remove our gloves and go bare-knuckles with such unsavory individuals”, he noted.

In a rejoinder Friday night, the former lawmaker said he was “waiting for the fight” Udenta warned of.

“If we do not want to attack any of us in public, we shouldn’t start it at all. I do not know what Gov. Bala Mohammed was thinking of, when he attempted his failed ridicule of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“The simple question of whether he would step down for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar or not, could have elicited a more decent response like: “We haven’t reached that bridge yet. We’ll cross it when we get there.”

Mohammed had asked the former VP to step down for him because he was more prepared and has goodwill across Nigeria.

Uzamere said after reading Udenta’s “convoluted reasons for working for the Bauchi helmsman, he deduced “a man out to make money”.

“If actually Udenta is a Professor, he ought to know better than to egg on a man on bail from EFCC, to dream of running for president of our country. Nigerians should hold people like Udenta responsible for the decline in the quality of our democracy.

“I stand on my reaction to Bala Mohammed’s attempted affront. Being a fellow Senator of the 6th Senate, I can relate in some ways with him and a direct response from him, rather than a response from a professor I’m yet to quantify his level of decent reasoning.

“I also doubt if Bala Mohammed was privy to Udenta’s reply, as he could not counter any of my assertions, neither did he address them, but rather chose personal attack.

“If Udenta can refer to Bala Mohammed as a consensus candidate of the North, even when the same North has come out to debunk whatever was written and made public by distinguished Professor Ango Abdullahi, it reveals his level of sycophancy and deceit.

“Why lead someone on, if not to defraud him? My little research on him shows he’s an opportunist. Udenta with all the political prowess he has ascribed to himself, should have been running for office and not chasing crumbs.

“At his age, experiences and betrayals he ascribed to himself dating as far back as the MKO Abiola era presidential politics, Udenta should have done better for himself, rather than massaging his greed all the time.

“And Udenta claimed to be a journalist. I am surprised he did not consider the role of journalists as the conscience of the people, in throwing his weight behind a man who publicly supported marauding undocumented Fulani terrorists that have tormented the South East and the rest of the country.

“How posterity would judge him should be his main preoccupation as a journalist, if he has a conscience. Apparently, Udenta is a man Friday, ready to be hired by the gullible that fall for his doubtful credentials.”, Uzamere added.

Politics / Biafra: DSS Feeds Nnamdi Kanu Once A Day – Lawyer Ejiofor Alleges by Loveurneighbour: 4:44am On Apr 30, 2022
By Seun Opejobi

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, lawyer of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has accused the Department of State Services, DSS, of starving the Biafra agitator.

Ejiofor said DSS has not allowed Kanu to eat more than once a day.

He disclosed this to journalists in Owerri, Imo State, on Friday after his routine visit with Kanu at DSS headquarters in Abuja.

Ejiofor lamented that the IPOB’s leader was getting worse due to the refusal of the DSS, to allow him to change his clothes despite repeated court orders to do so.

Ejiofor said: “We were also reliably informed by Onyendu that his meals are no longer served regularly. Onyendu barely eats once a day, and this situation is not helping his deteriorating medical condition.

“The lawless DSS personnel have remained adamant with how they treat Court orders with levity and disdain, which is unacceptable as no one is above the law anywhere in the world.

“Be assured UmuChineke that we, in the legal team are not resting on our oars towards ensuring that these infractions are addressed with immediate effect.”

Crime / Train Attack Terrorists Release Picture Of Baby Born In Captivity by Loveurneighbour: 5:06am On Apr 29, 2022
By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

Terrorists, who kidnapped passengers after attacking an Abuja-Kaduna route train, have released the picture of a baby that was delivered by one of the women they kidnapped from the train.

According to sources, the mother was eight months pregnant when she was abducted by the terrorists on March 28.

She and one other woman were said to be pregnant when the 63 passengers were abducted.

Only one passenger, the MD of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) Alwan Hassan, was released after his relations were said to have allegedly paid a ransom of N100 million.

A source told journalists on Thursday that “exactly one month after the incident, a woman has delivered a new baby girl.”

“The picture of the new girl was released on Wednesday evening by the terrorists group suspected to be Ansaru, a breakaway group of Boko Haram.

"Two days ago the news of her birth was on the social media and the conventional media where a family member of the woman first hinted that she had delivered at the weekend.

“The identity of the newborn was not disclosed until on Wednesday when the terrorists released the picture of the baby girl.

"The baby, clad in a thick pink dress and a light lemon sweater cap, with her eyes closed, looks healthy and well taken care of.”

Politics / Presidency: PDP Reps, SANs Warn Jonathan, Group Threatens Suit by Loveurneighbour: 4:31am On Apr 29, 2022
Former President Goodluck Jonathan who is considering joining the All Progressives Congress to run for President is set to face a legal battle in the coming days, The PUNCH has learnt.

This is just as the Vice Chairman/Director of Public Affairs, Igbo Leadership Development Foundation, Dr. Law Mefor, says his group will be going to court to challenge Jonathan should he declare his intention to contest.

Mefor stated this as the Peoples Democratic Party members in the House of Representatives warned the ex-President against accepting offers of the APC and the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)

Explaining the stand of the ILDF, Mefor, who believes the next President should be from the South-East region, argued that Jonathan had been affected by the constitutional amendment and thus had no right to contest.

He said, “I have said it before and I’m saying it again. We will go to court to challenge it if Jonathan joins the presidential race.

“What my group, Igbo Leadership Development Foundation, would test in court is whether Jonathan can be sworn in as President of Nigeria a third time despite the express constitutional provision against it.

“We are just waiting for Jonathan to pick up a political party’s nomination form and the Igbo Leadership Development Foundation will approach a court of competent jurisdiction to challenge his qualification to stand this election. I have nothing personal against Jonathan. After all, I was in his media team in 2015 but we have to do things right as a nation under the law and not as a nation of impunity picked as a consensus candidate.

In a chat with The PUNCH, a human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), said any party that picked Jonathan as its candidate risked being disqualified.

When asked what would happen if Jonathan emerged candidate, Falana stated, “Of course, their opponents will go to court to challenge the legal validity of his election. It will be too much of a risk without having a definitive pronouncement on this matter.”

The senior advocate maintained that Jonathan having been inaugurated as President twice could not be sworn in the third time.

Falana also noted that Section 137(3) of the constitution which was amended in 2018, states that a person who was sworn in to complete the term for which another person was elected as President shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term.

He argued that since Jonathan became President following the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua, he would not be able to serve two more full terms.

Politics / Presidency: It Is The Turn Of North Central, Says Saraki by Loveurneighbour: 4:50am On Apr 27, 2022
As politicians jostle for the nation’s presidency in 2023, former Senate President Bukola Saraki has said it is the turn of the Northcentral to lead the country.

He spoke yesterday in Jos when he addressed delegates from Plateau State ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election slated to hold in May.

The former Kwara governor, who is among the many aspirants in the race for the PDP ticket, said the Northcentral had consistently supported other regions to lead the country and deserved similar support from other zones.

“You remember that before the national convention of our party, we held a meeting in Abuja with delegates of Northcentral extraction.

“We said to ourselves that for many times and many years, we, in the Northcentral, have worked hard, we struggled, used our efforts, used our money, used our energies to support other people to lead.

“Everybody, who had become President under this great party, got the seat because of our massive sacrifices.

“We have now resolved that it is time for others to vote for us in 2023,” he said.

Education / Ngige: I Have Done What Napoleon Couldn’t Do by Loveurneighbour: 4:34am On Apr 27, 2022
By Johnbosco Agbakwuru

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige has said that he has done what many cannot do to forestall strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

Senator Ngige also dismissed insinuations that he is responsible for the ongoing action by the union, saying that his work was only to conciliate and not to implement agreements reached.

Speaking on a Silver Bird Television Live Interview Programme, the Minister said he has successfully conciliated 1683 industrial disputes since assumption of office in 2015, and has been taking extra measures beyond his statutory responsibilities, to forestall strike and ensure action is promptly suspended when workers unions make it inevitable.

Ngige also said the untiring efforts of his office towards peaceful national industrial milieu , sleepless nights as a parent whose children are also in the public universities and who equally bear the brunt of ASUU strike, are being undermined by an erroneous impression by some Nigerians over his role as a conciliator, and by the uncooperative, anti-labour attitude of ASUU leadership

The Minister insisted that the role of the Minister of Labour is to conciliate disputes and does not include the implementation of agreements so reached with parties.

“However, when conciliation fails, the Minister is under obligation by section 9 and 14 of Trade Disputes Act, Cap T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria to transmit the results of the negotiation to the Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP) or to National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN)

“In the ongoing ASUU imbroglio, I’m the conciliator. I bring them to negotiate with their employers – the Ministry of Education and the National University Commission as well as IPPIS, the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, all under the Ministry of Finance.

“At the end of every negotiation, we put down what everybody has agreed on in writing and add timelines for implementation.

“But let me tell you. There is nothing new about ASUU strike. It has been a recurrent decimal. In the last twenty years, ASUU has gone on strike, sixteen times. So , there is nothing new as such.

“What is new however is that I have done what Napoleon could not do. You can ask them, the ASUU leadership. I’m sure that in the innermost part of their hearts, they can’t sweep away my untiring efforts. I’m the only conciliator lately, who has conciliated and put timelines on agreements and pushed all the parties, the government side to implement and stick to the timelines. Such fidelity wasn’t there hitherto.

“Last year alone, based on the timelines I put on the 2020 agreement , they got N92.7b in terms of Revitalization and Earned Academic/ Earned Allowances for the university system. I went out of the schedule of my office, to the Ministry of Finance , to the Office of the Accountant General myself , on occasions , to ensure these monies were paid.

“Yes, I did it. I did same for doctors and other health professional operating under JOHESU. I promised in 2015 when the President appointed me that the era when agreements were left to gather dusts were over and I have maintained it. I work even at odd hours, late night , at times far into morning hours to ensure things work.

“I recall that in 2020 when ASUU went on strike and refused virtual meetings which COVID-19 imposed, turned down all appeals by the federal government to call off the strike and engage the virtual teaching of their students as was done in the private universities, the Federal Government had no option but to invoke No work, No pay in line with section 43 of the Trade Disputes Act after three month of the strike. As a parent whose children with others already lost nine months of academic teachings, I approached the President to approve payment to ASUU on humanitarian ground, despite not teaching for nine month!

“I have also personally suggested to ASUU to appoint a general secretary and deputy as part of its secretariat to do the leg work, follow up on its matters, since its leadership, comprising professors, senior citizens may not stand the bottle necks and delays usually associated with public service bureaucracy.”

The Minister regretted that the current ASUU strike has prolonged because the university teachers have made negotiation difficult.

“Negotiation now is being made impossible by ASUU. For example , ASUU insists that National Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA) should take the payment platform, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) that it developed and deploy it for payment in the university whether it is good or bad , whether it failed integrity and vulnerability test or not.

Crime / It’s Shameful DSS Yet To Arrest Aso Rock Burglars One Year After –HURIWA by Loveurneighbour: 4:22am On Apr 27, 2022
Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, on Tuesday, slammed the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services, the National Intelligence Agency and other security agencies for their collective failure to fish out some Aso Rock burglars one year after the embarrassing incident.

Robbers, last May, had invaded the residence of the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari, inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja and the incident was confirmed by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, though he said it was “a foolish attempt”.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the incompetence of the security agents and their failure to arrest the Aso Rock burglars has buoyed burglars and bandits so much so that they sacked Abuja villagers and cause dwellers to flee their homes despite living in the seat of power, kilometres away from President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group also cited the kidnappings, killings and disturbing attacks that had occurred in Abuja in the last one year including the attack and abduction of two Abuja-based journalists of PUNCH Newspapers, Solomon Odeniyi and Amarachi Orjiude, within 24-hours last March; the attack on the Abuja Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Tribune, Leon Usigbe, also in March 2022, the abduction of a PUNCH journalist, Okechukwu Nnodim, in February 2021; amongst numerous others that went unreported in the media.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “It is shameful and a pointer to the inefficiency of all the security agents that one year after daring burglars invaded the residence of a whole Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari, a street to that of the President in Aso Villa, the police, the DSS, the Army and others are yet to fish out the perpetrators. Or have they gotten the so-called burglars but failed to revert to Nigerians about the development?

“The whole security architecture is also yet to be ascertained how armed robbers gained access into the ‘well-fortified’ Presidential Villa manned by a combined team of policemen, DSS operatives, and men of the Presidential Guards Brigade of the Nigeria Army. Sadly, till date, this invasion has yet to be resolved.

“Contrastively, more than 725 people have been arrested for storming the United State Capitol building on January 6, 2021. Over 71 rioters have also received criminal sentences, while the rest are waiting for their trials or haven’t yet reached plea agreements for charges ranging from obstruction of an official proceeding to assault.

"The continuous state of insecurity in Nigeria and the shameless incapacity of the security agencies to secure even the FCT is now obvious. If the security agents cannot even secure Aso Villa and the FCT which is about the smallest state if we take it to be a state and the seat of national power, then the hope of the common man is quashed.

“It’s pathetic that FCT residents now flee to the central business district of Abuja over attacks and invasion by marauding bandits in communities outside of the Central Areas of the metropolis.

“The Buhari regime must wake up and proffer radical solutions to the insecurity situation in the country.

“Nigerians must also demand accountability from the security agencies because defence sector got the largest chunk of budget this year. why is nobody being punished for failing to safeguard lives of Nigerians despite that the cardinal role of the government is the security of lives and property? Enough is enough.”

Politics / 2023: I Will Secure Nigeria As I Did In Kogi — Yahaya Bello by Loveurneighbour: 4:49am On Apr 26, 2022
By Clifford Ndujihe

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who is aspiring to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, next year, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in this interview spoke on the problems of the country, how he would tackle them if elected, and his chances among others.

On his philosophy and why he is running for presidency

I will be running on a broad political philosophy of progressive activism through social action and political reforms.

We are so blessed as a nation and yet it does not always seem so. I am running to restore hope by providing firm guarantees of security, unity and progress to all Nigerians. Our focus will be proper management of our great diversity so that it can really be an advantage. We will foster more cooperation and integration among citizens and make sure that progress is made steadily across all sectors and indicators.

Building on Buhari’s achievements

Despite the dire challenges facing Nigeria today, no one can deny that President Muhammadu Buhari has given our country the greatest achievements in public works, government housing and social services since this Fourth Republic began. In addition, this administration has invested heavily in our national security. The war against insecurity may be taking longer than earlier expected but President Buhari has ensured that we have the combat resources to keep hitting our foes hard until victory is achieved.

It can also not be denied that under this APC government, Nigeria is pushing forward the most comprehensive proposals for restructuring since Independence. The sum of government policies, the Electoral Act and other statutes enacted and the ongoing amendment of our Constitution are fundamentally changing the way we do things.

For instance, the average Nigerian Governor has more powers today over matters of security, public transportation, taxation, fiscal federalism, mineral and agro resources, electricity, etc than at any other time in our history. These are the legacies of Mr. President. They will help the next president take longer and easier developmental strides, provided Nigerians make sure he is succeeded by one who is not out to discredit but to consolidate. I have proven time and time again that I am the only such successor in the APC’s line-up for 2023.

I am running for President because I see a bright light shining at the end of the tunnel for our nation. I am not one of those who only see doom and gloom. It is my intention to take custody of that light, to illuminate every gap in our nationhood and to fix them. I will ensure that this light is handed over in due course to successors who will be trustworthy stewards of the great future which a federal government led by me will build for our nation

On why he thinks he has the capacity to do the above

Kogi State is a microcosm of Nigeria and possesses the same diversities that, often mismanaged, have caused us so much trouble in Nigeria. However, I mobilised my people and together we are working through our differences. The brutal personality cults, tribal clashes, farmer/herdsmen conflicts and religious upheavals we inherited have ceased.

One of my most outstanding achievements as Governor, and one that I am very proud of indeed, is the dismantling of these age long dichotomies. Another is the elevation of inclusivity as a cardinal point in the compass of governance.

We have achieved the 35 affirmative action thresholds for women, and 54 Nigerians from every state and the FCT have been appointed into our government ranging from cabinet seats to clerical and administrative positions.

When we talk about inclusivity within the Nigerian context, our next leader must also recognize that it cannot be fully functional without Cooperation and Integration.

Nigerians must be able to live and contribute anywhere in this nation with the guarantee that they will not be called strangers there one day. To achieve this we must make sure that place of origin’ gives way for ‘place of domicile’ in determining who is a son or daughter of the soil. Our citizenship must no longer be diminished by indigeneship. This is the next level in what it means to be a Nigerian which I will actively champion as President.

If elected, I will ensure Nigerians of every extraction know what it means to be free of the principles of exclusion that currently demeans our very existence. All of us deserve to belong in our country without discrimination or marginalisation and to receive our full and valuable parts in the national scheme of affairs. I am Ebira and as a person who overcame the ‘minority syndrome with much difficulty to be where I am today, I want every Nigerian, especially the youth, to live in a country where no tribe or religion or gender is ever considered a minority again.

A Yahaya Bello presidency, like his governorship, will be tough on crime. Crime is crime and all crimes are inexcusable and I have demonstrated strong capacity to neutralize crimes and criminals in Kog State. Most Nigerians probably do not know this, but we went from being the state where violent crime was most endemic in 2015 to become one of the safest states in Nigeria from 2017 to date. Our crime rate has been one of the lowest in the country for years now. Terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes will not be tolerated when by the help of God I am Nigeria’s President and Commander-in-Chief.

I will not tolerate non-state actors who take up arms against the nation whatever their grievances but I will be willing to listen to all sides and address all agitations fairly, especially those which are borne out of genuine imbalances in the treatment of citizens by the system. I will put a stop to existential mistreatment of any people among us, provided that agitators are willing to give peace a chance and threats of harm to the Nigerian Nation and People are not brought to the table as leverage.

On how he will create jobs and fight poverty

The Buhari administration has a target of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2030. I will have an additional target of creating at least 20 million naira millionaires by the same year 2030, with the aim that each of them will employ or otherwise empower at least five other citizens.

In this regard, we are going to learn a lot from the South-East. The apprenticeship model by which a boy, from an indigent or affluent background, is taken, trained and turned into a millionaire businessman in as little as 10 years is one we have to understudy and invest in. Harvard University already studies it and the Nigerian Government must do no less. I have personally observed that this model works on average 50 per cent of the time with a least five out of 10 boys who apprenticed with various Igbo friends of mine are millionaires today in their own rights. I also observed that it is not the line of business but the underlying principles and practices that work so well. This is because this amazing phenomenon is repeated sector after sector whether they deal in vehicle spare parts, electrical, pharmaceuticals, clothing or even foodstuffs, etc. This means it is a system that can be replicated. We will explore methods to do so.

On what he would tell his supporters if he is edged out of the race for the APC presidential ticket via consensus

I chaired the registration of youth and people living with disabilities in our party and till today I’m still the ambassador for youths and the younger generation in the party, and in the government. They believe in me and that was why we were able to mobilise over 41 million Nigerians into our party and we are still counting. I’m sure you saw what happened on April 2, when we declared publicly.

Politics / Anything Short Of Jonathan’s Ticket ‘ll Cost APC 2023 Presidency — Buhari, Adamu by Loveurneighbour: 4:29am On Apr 26, 2022
A political pressure group, Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPD), has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to adopt former President Goodluck Jonathan, as the party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential election.

The National Coordinator of the group, Mr Ralph Okorie, who made the call on Monday at a news conference in Abuja, urged President Muhammadu Buhari, to endorse the Jonathan project.

“There is a need for experience and continuity. The two enjoy the most cordial relationship that had ever existed between an incumbent and his immediate predecessor,” he said.

Okorie said the call for Buhari to endorse Jonathan was to ensure that candidates without a clear cut vision do not emerge as the party’s flag-bearer in the 2023 presidential election.

He said that allowing candidates without a clear cut vision to get into the Presidential Villa in 2023, would not only be suicidal but would be like aiding and supporting incompetence over competence.

According to Okorie, the persistent calls from different parts of the country for Jonathan to contest the 2023 presidential election indicates that Nigerians have genuinely and passionately joined the support for Jonathan.

"We acknowledge that the ripple effects of good governance are multi-generational, hence, the CNPD for Jonathan call on all Nigerians to support this agenda.

“We strongly believe that this administration is working round the clock to address the two major problems of security and economy bedevilling this country.

"It will be counter-productive to bring an amateur to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari at this material time.

“As vanguards for Nigeria’s development, peace and unity, we want to reiterate that, our beloved country cannot afford to have a regional champion as a flagbearer.

“It is imperative that Dr Abdullahi Adamu as the National Chairman of APC will use the best man for the job to win this election bearing in mind that anything short of a Jonathan ticket will cost APC the presidency in 2023,” Okorie said.

He noted that his achievements of Jonathan stood him out among all the aspirants that have so far indicated an interest in the presidential election and described him as one of the most outstanding presidents the country had produced.

“For instance, within two weeks, Jonathan grounded the activities of Boko Haram insurgency and gave Nigeria a credible election adjudged by domestic and international observers as free and fair.

“Nigeria’s economic trajectory under his presidency was globally recognised as his national economic prowess earned the country the status of the largest economy in Africa.

“Today, some of the talented people who worked under his government are championing global economic transformations.

“Nigerians have not forgotten the glorious days of GEJ with Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala as the minister of Finance, Olusegun Aganga, Akinwumi Adesina, Mohammed Pateh, to mention but a few.

“We are still yearning for the immense contribution of Akinwumi Adesina who was the brain behind Jonathan’s agricultural transformation agenda that saw the increase in agriculture produce, value chain and foreign exchange earnings from the sector.

“In terms of foreign policy, Nigeria under Jonathan saw huge foreign direct investment, FDI, and infrastructure developments due to his economic liberalist and friendly dispositions,” Okorie added.

The CNPD coordinator also said that the Nigeria diasporic policy enhanced over 24 billion dollars in remittances under Jonathan which made Nigeria and Nigerians the pride of Africa and the world.

He added that Jonathan’s return to power would not only enhance the economic, foreign policy and security situation but would provide a favourable environment for national engagement and dialogue.

Okorie, however, called on Jonathan to listen to the numerous calls and observe the political mood across Nigeria as he would give impetus to APC’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.

Politics / 2023: Give Ticket To Who Will Not Run Away After Election – Wike To PDP Leaders by Loveurneighbour: 5:00am On Apr 25, 2022
The governor of Rivers State, Mr Nyesom Wike, who is a presidential aspirant under the platform of the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the weekend tasked stakeholders and founding fathers of the party to give the presidential ticket to someone who will not run away from the party.

The Presidential aspirant equally vowed to put David Umahi’s successor in Ebonyi State during the forthcoming 2023 general election.

Wike made this known while addressing stakeholders and political leaders of PDP in Ebonyi State during his consultation visit to the people of the state.

According to him: “I’m here in Ebonyi State to let you know that you should not border on the setbacks you have, that the law must take its prepared place at the right time. I don’t want to send any delegation to the people of Ebonyi, I told Governor Ugwuanyi that I’m coming personally so that you look into my eyes and I will look at your eyes.

"And nobody born of a woman shall tell me not to enter Ebonyi, I say nobody. I’m a full committed party member of PDP. I joined PDP when it was founded in 1998. Anything I’m today by the special Grace of God, as chairman of LGA to governor, Minister and it is PDP that gave it to me.

"Therefore, I owe PDP a lot and I will continue to support PDP. I’m not one of those who will reap and abandoned those who helped him. Go and tell whoever that is anywhere, that whatever you sow, you will reap. All those that PDP helped to be in power and have betrayed PDP, the judgment will come one day.

“I told Ebonyi people that you must take back your party secretariat and to the glory of God, we are here today. Let me tell you the truth, nobody can intimidate me, Not one. And I want my colleague in Ebonyi, David Umahi to hear me well. Wherever you are, wherever you may be, hear me now.

"PDP laboured and put their sleepless night and PDP won the election and you took the mandate of our people and go to another party, anybody who has conscience’, if you know you are a man and very strong and any day they put election you will win, I challenge you to resign and then come and contest election to know whether you will win again.

“We will continue to fight against injustice, we will fight for democracy. I’m making myself available to defeat APC in the forthcoming 2023 general election. My dear Ebonyi people, I’m here to tell you, I will stand by you, I will support you any day anytime.

"What PDP want is who will win election, give me this ticket, let me go and defeat APC for you. I’m not running for president to be given vice president. I’m not running to be called former presidential aspirant. I didn’t buy another form, Incase this one didn’t work, I will go back to it. If you have told Ebonyi people and Nigerians that you are running for president, why are you collecting another form for other positions” he stated.

"In a swift reaction, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi who is equally a presidential aspirant under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, challenged him to a debate.

Umahi cautioned Wike for saying that he will not win elections without PDP, describing him as a lawyer that does not know the law.

“I am calling him to debate, he wants to be President, I want to be President, let us do a debate so that the world would see how intellectual property would be deployed,” he noted.

Politics / Nigerian Leaders Worked For UK, US – Fani-kayode Lists ‘secrets’ by Loveurneighbour: 4:49am On Apr 25, 2022
By Wale Odunsi

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK) has stated that a number of Nigerian leaders worked for the United Kingdom and the United States.

In an essay titled ‘What they will not tell you’, he listed issues he described as secrets about Nigeria that have not been told, answered or explained.

“Of the 13 leaders that have led our country since 1960 seven were working for the British MI6 and/or the American CIA.

“Only the remaining six were working solely for Nigeria. The other seven were firmly within the power, control and grip of Britain and America”, the author noted.

The former aide to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo called them spies and informants that were carefully and craftily planted.

“Of the five Nigerian leaders that died whilst on the throne, every single one of them was murdered in cold blood by local agents of the CIA with the tacit and implicit support of M16 and Langley.”

Fani-Kayode insists that no military coup has ever been successful in Nigeria without the tacit backing and support of M16 and/or the CIA.

Noting that every nation has secrets, FFK said most are classified and are known only to experienced, circumspect and cerebral members of the intelligence community.

“Nigeria is no different but hers are legion. There are more secrets hidden in the belly of our nation’s womb and history than most.”

He said secrets about Nigeria include the deaths of Shehu Musa Yar’adua, M. K. O. Abiola, ex-Head of State Sani Abacha, Dele Giwa, Sulia Adedeji, Alfred Rewane, Bola Ige.

Others are Funsho Williams, Ibrahim Abacha, Tunde Idiagbon, Abubakar Audu, Abba Kyari, Brigadier Bako, Major General Shuwa, Bagudu Kaltho and Air Marshal Alex Badeh.

Also secretive, according to Fani-Kayode, are the C-130 plane crash, the Bellview plane crash, the Chibok girls abduction, the identity of foreign entities and local collaborators backing Boko Haram and ISWAP.

He further mentioned “the murderous herdsmen” in the North-East and North-West and the violent secessionist agitation and brutal killings by “unknown gunmen” in the South-East.

FFK added that the Nigerian people, though blissful in their naivety and innocence, still believe that they control their own future and destiny.

He lamented that citizens have no idea about what went on in the past and what is going on because they either do not care or are busy trying to make ends meet.

"They are also unaware that our country has become something of a football that is being kicked around and silently carved up by the Americans, the British, the French and increasingly the Chinese.

“All those that ruled us and gallantly attempted to stand up against western domination, neo-colonialism, and had a patriotic, zealous and enviable pan-African disposition were taken out by a coup d’etat or by being murdered.

“You want their names? I will not mention them. Kindly do the research yourselves and work out who they are. I will say though that each of them at least gave us something to be proud of.

"Yet the tales of woe and sordid state secrets continue. Did you know that approximately 800,000 Nigerian civilians, including women and children, were killed by Biafran forces during the three-year Nigerian civil war.

“We often talk about and rightly condemn the mass murder and slaughtered of 3 million Biafran civilians (including 1 million children) but rarely do we spare a thought for or even mention the 800,000 civilians that also perished.”

Fani-Kayode stressed that the genocide, mass murder and crimes against humanity went both ways.

“These are bitter and uncomfortable truths that many hate to hear and that others will find hard to believe. The dark history of Nigeria is not known by 95% of Nigerians”, he added.

Crime / Gunmen Kidnap 10 Herders, 300 cows In Anambra, Demand N4m, AK-47 Gun As Ransom by Loveurneighbour: 5:17pm On Apr 23, 2022
By Joe Chukindi

Suspected gunmen have allegedly kidnapped 10 persons, suspected to be herders in Anambra State, with a demand for N4 million and an AK-47 riffle as ransom.

DAILY POST gathered that the incident happened at Obene community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State hours of Saturday.

South East Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, who alerted journalists about the incident, said those kidnapped were his members.

Siddiki said the incident took place at Fulani settlement at exactly 1.30am on Saturday, while the herders and their cattle were asleep.

The cattle herders were attacked at their settlement while asleep, and their herds numbering about 300 forcefully taken away by the gunmen numbering about 40.

“The men invaded the area with sophisticated weapons, including guns cutlasses, sticks and charms.

“The kidnappers have established contact with their victims families, demanding N4million and one gun as ransom.

“As I speak to you now, I have reported the incident to the Police and DSS for prompt action,” he said.

He appealed to the kidnappers to release his members and their cows, stressing that those kidnapped were mere herders, who were struggling to eke out a living.

Meanwhile, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident

He urged the leadership of Miyetti Allah in the state to come up with more information that would enable the Police to commence aggressive investigation into the matter.

He said: “Yes, we are aware of the incident, but we want the Miyetti Allah leadership to supply us with more information, since the Kidnappers have established ransom contact with the victims families.”

He assured them that the state commissioner of police, CP Echeng Echeng and other security agencies in the state would do everything possible to rescue the victims from their abductors.

Crime / Five Killed, Property Destroyed As Yoruba, Native Residents Clash In Akwa Ibom by Loveurneighbour: 5:00pm On Apr 20, 2022
Atleast five persons have been killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed, in a communal clash between Yoruba residents and the indigenes of Ibeno in the Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

According to reports, though details are still sketchy, the fracas started as a cult clash before it turned into an ethnic war.

Sources said the Ilaje people, mostly fishermen, have started fleeing the community through bush paths, while their houses and tents are being looted and destroyed by the hoodlums.

A Yoruba indigene living in Akwa Ibom State, Barr. Oluwajuwon Ogunbiyi, told Daily Post that the situation was unfortunate. He called on the state government to set up a committee to investigate the crisis.

He said, “It is quite unfortunate that this crisis has led to the loss of innocent lives and destruction of properties. The Ibeno community had been a good host over the decades to both indigenes and non-indigenes. Everybody has been living there in harmony without rancour.

“I’m therefore using this medium to appeal for peace and an end to hostilities from both warring parties. I also want to call on the Governor of Akwa Ibom State as well as the heads of all security agencies in the state to intervene in the matter immediately in order to stem these waves of violence.”

Politics / How To Stop Killings In South-east — Igbo Leaders by Loveurneighbour: 10:33am On Apr 20, 2022
It’s the result of injustice, FG should listen, dialogue with aggrieved groups —Victor Umeh

THE wanton killings that have been going on in the South-East zone have become a thing of great concern to the people of the zone and some Igbo leaders have suggested ways to contain the ugly trend.

Former National Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Senator Victor Umeh, attributed the killings to years of injustice meted out to the people of the zone by the Federal Government, saying that injustice hurts, and the situation has gotten worse since the advent of President Muhammadu Buhari-led Administration. He called on the Federal Government to listen to and dialogue with the aggrieved groups to reduce the killings.

"Justice does not hurt anybody. But injustice hurts everybody and that is what Nigeria is experiencing. Dialogue is the solution. If someone is complaining about the injustice done to his people, you meet him and discuss it with him.

"People who are in authority have refused to use the appropriate mechanism to resolve conflicts in Nigeria. That mechanism is dialogue. When I was at the Senate, I was very loud on it. The only way Nigeria can be peaceful is for us to have a policy of inclusiveness. If the Federal Government carries all parts of Nigeria along, without discrimination, with equity and justice, everybody will be happy.

"When you continue to discriminate against certain people, they will continue to agitate for their rights. They can manage it without the use of force. If you engage people and listen to them, make adjustments, and change your attitude towards them, they will cooperate with you.

"The idea of sending soldiers after people will not solve any problem. This country will be good for all of us when all of us are given equal citizenship rights.

"If people are complaining and you neglect them, one day, you will not have the means of resolving the problems again. It will become so unmanageable. We still have little time left to listen to grievances of various parts of Nigeria,” Umeh said.

Speaking specifically on the attacks in Anambra State, Senator Umeh urged those involved to have a rethink.

"There are alternative ways to go about these things. We need to have a peaceful Anambra State so that the new administration led by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo will be able to work.

"We have only one Anambra State and one Igbo land. We have to be peaceful and work together as brothers and sisters to confront our common challenges. In an atmosphere of insecurity, we will be destroying our homeland.

Politics / I'll Turn Nigeria Into Productive Nation, Says Obi by Loveurneighbour: 5:27am On Apr 20, 2022
A presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi, has told party stakeholders in Enugu State that he will rescue Nigeria from its present economic woes if given an opportunity to lead the country.

Obi, who was in Enugu to consult with state Executive members of the party, lamented the dwindling economic fortunes of Nigeria and blamed it on poor civilian leadership that has been installed in the country from 1999 to the present.

Briefing journalists shortly after the meeting held at the party’s Secretariat, the former governor of Anambra state decried the country’s debt burden.

Obi noted that if nothing urgent was done to change the status quo, the current leaders would plunge the nation into more debt.

"We even borrow to service debts. What we are sharing is finished. We need wealth creators. We need to move Nigeria from a consumptive nation into a productive nation.

“The problem of Nigeria is leadership. The cumulative effect of the failure of our leadership in the past decades is what we are suffering from now. So we just have to do things right. Countries don’t fail overnight.”

The PDP presidential aspirant asserted that the best way to save Nigeria from its present economic woes was to shoot up the production sector by ensuring that all borrowings are channeled into the productive sector.

Others, he said, were to reduce the cost of running governance, create job opportunities for the teeming population of Nigerian youths and enhance food security for every Nigerian.

Speaking on the incessant killings across the country, Obi said if given the opportunity to lead he would curtail it to pave way for the production sector to thrive, noting that food security would be one of the top priorities of his administration.

"Natural security is when human beings know where their next meal will come from. 98 million Nigerians are living below the poverty line. The poverty rate in Nigeria with a population of about 200 million people is far higher than that of China and India with populations of over 2.8 billion people combined.

“Unemployment rate in Nigeria is the highest. More than fifty percent of our young people who are of production age are doing nothing. We want to move Nigeria from consumption to production. Everybody is suffering the pains.”
