God called Himself God of Abraham because of the covenant between them which God reaffirmed to his son (Isaac) and which was majorly fulfilled though Isaac's son (Jacob who became Israel and is widely referred to as the Patriarch of the Israelites). It was God's way of reminding the people of His promise to Abraham, one of which, was the Promised Land.
