CrimeColumns Search For: NEWS Wanted Obono-obla Attends Social Functions In CR by LtChisom(op): 8:14am On Dec 27, 2019
The former chairman of the Special Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, Okoi Obono-Obla, who was declared wanted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission on Thursday released a message on his Facebook page, which suggested he was in Nigeria attending social functions.

The ICPC declared Obono-Obla wanted in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Rasheedat Okoduwa, accusing him of failing to honour its invitation over allegations bordering on fraud and corruption.

The statement said there was evidence that Obono-Obla left Nigeria in August and had yet to return to the country.

It stated further that Obono-Obla was facing allegations against him by members of the public on his role as the head of the SPIP.

The statement read, “The Commission is in receipt of petitions accusing him of abuse of office, falsification of admission records, living above his income and collection of gratification from suspects under his investigation.

“The suspended chairman is also facing allegations of working outside the guidelines governing the panel by investigating unauthorised petitions and prosecuting suspects without recourse to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation.”

ICPC claimed it had conducted a series of investigations on the allegations with preliminary findings showing that some provisions of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and extant laws of Nigeria had been violated by Obono-Obla.

The commission stated that records from the Nigeria Immigration Service showed that Obono-Obla travelled out of the country to an undisclosed location on August 17 through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos and had not returned since.

Earlier on August 15, 2019, the commission invited Obono-Obla for questioning after his removal from office through a letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, on August 14. The letter, with reference number 58788/S.75.18/T1/100, said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), had approved his immediate suspension pending the investigation of ICPC into alleged falsification of records and financial impropriety.

But in a daring message on Facebook on Thursday morning, Obono-Obla stated that he attended the unveiling of a book written by Abam Iwara on Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at The Presbyterian Primary School, Ugep in the Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The former SPIP chairman wrote, “I love the discipline of history! A society without history is a dead one! It is history that shapes the cultural, legal, economic and political circumstances of any given society or country!

“On the 24th December, 2019, I attended the unveiling of a book titled ‘Topics in African History: Before 1800 and in the 19th and 20th Centuries’, written by Chief Abam Iwara @ The Presbyterian Primary School, Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.

“To encourage the work of the author, I bought 250 copies of the book. I have decided to donate 50 copies of the book to five secondary schools in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State to promote the study of history. The foreword of the book is written by my humble self.”

In another post, Obono-Obla released a picture claiming that Obol Lopon of Idomi, Yakurr Council Area of Cross River State and his entourage paid him a visit on Thursday, December 26. In the picture are Obono-Obla, two people in traditional attire (whom he claimed to have paid him the visit) and two children.

When our correspondent contacted the ICPC’s spokesperson, Okoduwa, to inquire if Obono-Obla wanted order had been lifted or still subsisting, she said through a text message that she was on leave and had to contact a department of the anti-graft agency.

Her message read, “I am currently on leave, I will have to find out from the enforcement department.”

A source at the commission, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that Obono-Obla was still wanted, describing the posts as taunt directed at the ICPC.

CrimeWhy We Couldn’t Rescue Lynched Cross River Rapist – Police by LtChisom(op): 8:02am On Dec 27, 2019

The police have explained why they could not rescue a young man, who allegedly robbed and raped a girl in Calabar, Cross River State, and was beaten to death by a mob on Christmas Day.

Explaining what happened, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, said the victim “later died because he couldn’t survive the assault on him.”

Ugbo stated, “The police rescued him but before we could take him to hospital, he died. We could not make any arrest. In the case of a mob action, it is difficult to investigate. Nobody has come to lay any complaint.

“We will try to reduce jungle justice and possibly eradicate it. We will continue to sensitise the people to the danger and the offence of killing another person. It is an offence. It is unfortunate that when such things happen, it is not easy to grab somebody.”

It was gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday on the Ekong Etta Street by Okoro Agbor.

An eyewitness said the girl’s scream attracted people, who came to her rescue.

“The mob chased after the man and caught up with him, while his two accomplices escaped. The mob beat him to death,” the eyewitness said.

Emir Sanusi wants Nigeria to ban child brides, Under-18 marriage
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, on Thursday, implored Nigerians, especially Muslims, to give birth to the number of children they can cater for.

Mr Sanusi gave this advice while speaking at the opening of the 108th edition of Islamic Vacation Course (IVC), organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Zone B, held at IVC Permanent Camp, along Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State.

The Kano monarch expressed a similar view in Kano a few days earlier.

Mr Sanusi, while speaking on the array of social problems bedeviling Nigeria, insisted that the ‘almajri’ challenge in Northern Nigeria is not a religious concern, but a social issue that needs urgent attention.

The almajiri challenge involves out-of-school children who are sent, often by their parents, to Islamic clerics to live and learn Quranic knowledge but often end up begging and doing menial work on the streets. Millions of almajri children roam Northern Nigerian streets amidst efforts of local and federal authorities to solve the problem.

While maintaining that there is a need to get all out of school children back to school, Mr Sanusi said that men should imbibe the habit of marrying the number of women they can cater for.

“If we continue this way, about 40 per cent extremely poor people will be in Nigeria. Poverty in the South West is 20 per cent, in the North, it is 80 per cent, Lagos is 8 per cent and Zamfara, it is 91 per cent.

“We have been talking about almajri for over 30 years. Why are people having family that they cannot maintain? Why are people marrying wives that they cannot maintain? The condition is that you are able to provide for your family.

“Instead of having many children, why not have the ones you can cater for? These are the fundamental questions we should ask ourselves. Most of these children roaming about the streets will be adult in the next 20 years and they will be the ones recruited as political thugs by the politicians in the next twenty years, if we don’t take good care of them now.

“This is my own advice that we must look at. These are not religious issues, they are social issues that need to be addressed”.

The Sultan of Sokoto while speaking urged Muslims not to be provoked by utterances from political or religious leaders but to continue to be law-abiding.

He urged Muslims to work for the unity of the country.

He said, “We will not work to divide Nigeria. We should not take arm, don’t be provoked by any utterances. Be law-abiding wherever you are.”

AbdurRazzak Alaro, a professor of the Department of Islamic Law, University of Ilorin, who was the guest speaker, while speaking on the topic “The Unification”, maintained that unity among Muslims is not an option but an obligation to all Muslims.

“Unity as a concept is very essential in the religion of Islam. God instructed Muslims to unite and work toward unity. Muslims are expected to be united and not disunited. Unity is not a matter of option but obligation. We must be courageous enough to call a space a spade. MSSN has a role to play in unifying Nigerian Muslims.”

Oh! You want to talk about confusion?

Lemme show you just a little:

How many fighting men were found in Judah?
Five hundred thousand (2 Samuel 24:9)
Four hundred and seventy thousand (I
Chronicles 21:5)

God sent his prophet to threaten David with
how many years of famine?
Seven (2 Samuel 24:13)
Three (I Chronicles 21:12)

How old was Ahaziah when he began to rule
over Jerusalem?
Twenty-two (2 Kings 8:26)
Forty-two (2 Chronicles 22:2)

How old was Jehoiachin when he became king of
Jerusalem?
Eighteen (2 Kings 24:8 )
Eight (2 Chronicles 36:9)

How long did he rule over Jerusalem?
Three months (2 Kings 24:8 )
Three months and ten days (2 Chronicles 36:9)

Deal with that first. If you want more, I'll show you more.

Christianity always wins... yen yen yen grin
