On July 19, 2011, British Prime Minister David Cameron took part in a press conference with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan ath the State House in Lagos, Nigeria. The Prime Minister accompanied by Development Secretary Andre Mitchell, Investment Minister Lord Green and a business delegation comprising of 25 representatives of blue Bristish companies were on a second of a two day visit to South Africa and Nigeria.

British Prime Minister David Cameron had some interesting commentary on Nigeria’s growth prospects in the coming years. According to him, some predict that in the next forty years, Nigeria will have the highest average GDP growth rate in the world. Nigeria is the UK’s second largest export market in Africa and the continents third largest importing nation into the UK.

A memorable day, June 20, 2011, would forever remain fresh in the mind of the family members of Mr. Boniface Ugwu, an ex – official of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Benue State as it was the day their daughter, Adaora Ugwu, who was believed to have died after a fatal accident and deposited at one of the mortuaries in Enugu State, resurrected.

The 21-year-old Adaora, had gone to Markurdi for her JAMB’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on the fateful day and was returning to Enugu to prepare for the last Army recruitment exercise when a mini commercial bus belonging to the Enugu State Transport Company (ENTRANCO) marked, XL812 UWN which was returning from Markurdi to Enugu city , collided with an Nsukka bound mini bus marked XB504 TKP belonging to Peace Mass Transit, leaving over 20 passengers of the two vehicles dead, including Adaora and four recently discharged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

A 29-year old woman, Mrs. Grace Jacob, has been arrested for battering her 10-year-old son, Emmanuel, and forcing him to sleep in the staircase of their home at night.

If not that a non-government organisation, Esther Child Foundation, came to the rescue of little Emmanuel, he might have been dead by now as he now nurses severe injuries inflicted on him.

Mrs. Jacob, 29, who lives at 4, Muhammed Street, Santos, Egbeda area of Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, gave birth to Victor when she was 19 years old.

She had the boy for her lover, Mr. Paul Emmanuel who had since left her. She is now married to a new husband and has a child for him.

It was gathered that Victor was severely beaten by his mother at the slightest provocation, which led to deep injuries and cuts all over the boy’s body. The boy’s face is swollen with deep cuts on his cheeks.

According to Mrs. Esther Ogwu, the founder of Esther Child Foundation, she received a call from a resident in Egbeda to come quickly to rescue a boy who was being abused and tortured in the most dehumanising way by his mother.

Five girls were found dead this morning in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, after yesterday’s heavy rains forced them to sleep in a poorly ventilated room in their restaurant where they worked.

The corpses of the four teenage-girls and a baby-girl, aged between three months and 18 years, were discovered this morning inside the stuffy room on Allen Avenue in Ikeja.

Neighbours told P.M.NEWS that the girls may have died of suffocation overnight in the room where they sought refuge after rains wreacked havoc in Lagos yesterday.
Two other girls, who also slept in the same room, were still in critical condition at Bodet Hospital at Alausa in Ikeja, it was gathered. They were said to be responding to treatment.

The five corpses were brought to Area F Police Station in Ikeja early today in a commuter bus.
P.M.NEWS learnt that a mother and her three-month-old girl were among the dead.

Three Nigerians were yesterday beheaded in Saudi Arabia. They had been found guilty of robbing and murdering fellow Nigerian, Omar Mohammed Adam. This was announced by the Saudi Interior Ministry and publicised by the official SPA news agency.

Mohammed Ismail, Abdulqudus Adam and Mohammed Kabir Ali broke into the house of Omar Mohammed Adam where “they beat him and his wife, tied them down and strangled Omar to death,” the statement said. Then they burgled their compatriot’s home, it added.

The beheadings in the western Red Sea city of Jeddah brings the number of executions in that country to 31 since January 1.

On June 10, London-based watchdog Amnesty International called on Saudi Arabia to stop applying the death penalty, saying there had been a significant rise in the number of executions in the previous six weeks. According to Amnesty, 15 people were executed in May alone.

In 2009, the number of executions was 67, compared to 102 the previous year.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

Respected entertainer and one of Africa’s leading talking drummers, Ara, has issued a statement, saying she’s parting with her husband Prince Nurudeen Olalekan Saliu.

The couple exchanged wedding vows on June 4, 2009.

Following the recent fall out between Flavour and his Bad Beats record label, (Click here if you missed it), the label has ejected the crooner from the posh 7 bedroom duplex they rented in his name somewhere in Magodo, Lagos. Flavour has since moved to a temporary place in Festac.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the label told reporters that were not done with Flavour: “This is just the beginning of the legal battle. We are in a civil society and have laws governing every facet. When people disregard contracts, the legal system is there to restore justice and we are fully prepared to seek a redress in the court of law” he said.

In 2005, Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja Nigeria, lost 60 students in the Sosoliso flight crash. In total, 109 lives were lost in the crash. Kechi Okwuchi was the only student and one of two people to survive the crash. She’s since then undergone 75 surgeries. But she still needs help. She is scheduled to begin facial reconstructive surgeries in Boston this summer.

Eleven days after, Mr. Kolade Arowolo, who was suspected to have killed his wife, Titilayo, a banker with Skye Bank, Marina Branch, Monday denied stabbing and killing the deceased.

He said contrary to public opinion, the deceased stabbed herself to death.

The suspect was said to have killed his 29-year-old wife in cold blood at their No. 8 Akindehinde Street, Isolo, a suburb of Lagos, on Saturday, June 24.

According to him, he had been having serious issues with the deceased over their marriage before that fateful day that she ended up killing herself, after stabbing him too.

Recalling what transpired between them that day, Arowolo said the deceased was acting under the influence of demons that took over her body and turned her into another person entirely.

He said: “The woman was possessed that day and while we were quarreling, she went into the kitchen and brought out a knife with which she overpowered me and then began to stab me all over my body and head.

“The next thing I saw, she started stabbing herself repeatedly with the knife while telling me that she was tired of the marriage and that since I did not want to let her go, she will kill me and then kill herself.”

According to him, “We have been having issues since the day we got married so much so that I have contemplated divorcing her but because I am a spiritual person and church I pastor, I decided to manage.

“I am now regretting that decision because I should have been bold enough to divorce her and then face the consequences instead of this mess I have found myself.”

He went on to say that he never had plans to marry her as he had a lady he was dating but got lured into her web with the pregnancy she said he was responsible, adding that he only agreed to marry her when the pressure from her family became too much from him to bear.
