Politics / Re: Questions Igbos In Northern Nigeria Must Answer by Lucifer1419: 1:03pm On Jun 04, 2021
FreeIgbos:
Igbos are acclaimed to be astute business people, good enterprenuers and hard-working. However, one sore point is a lack of political foresight and cunning self preservation in a jungle system.

Recorded history stated that ethno-religeous riots is something that has been occurring in the North since as far back as 1940's and the major victims in all these riots are always Igbos. Each time it occurs, lives are wasted and properties destroyed. Common sense and self preservation would have dictated that such region is hostile for Igbo investments and ought to be avoided at all cost but ironically, the reverse appears to be the case.

Here are a few questions Igbos in Northern Nigeria must answer now:

1. You have a house in the North yet you don't even have any in the East, if there is a repeat of 1966, where will you stay?

2. You have a business in North employing people and paying tax to their state government yet you don't have any in the East, not even a branch! If there is crises in the North and you are forced to relocate to the East in a hurry, what would sustain you?

3. Are you aware that in 1966, the Igbos that suffered the most and formed bulk of the early refugees where mostly returnees from North?

4. There are good universities and secondary schools all over the South (both private and government owned), but you will go to the North to build schools and send your children there when the demand is greater in the South! The university bandits attacked in Kaduna is owned by an Igbo man from Anambra and most of the students are also Igbos but when they were kidnapped, the parents were forced to pay over 100 million naira for their children to be released! Would such have happened if that university was built in the East?

Tensions are already rising in Nigeria, and sentiments flaring up with anti Igbo rhetorics now the order of the day. From the president down to the average man in the core North are finding it hard to contain the hate they have for Igbos. Worse still, they are once again eyeing your investments with evil eyes. Is this not time to totally stop any form of investments in such hostile region and channel it to your region where you know it would be safe?
. God bless you for this right up, you will lived long .

You can tell that to a coach like Wenger, Conte and others not Guardiola that wọn it twice and in the league of football greats like Ferguson, Ancelotti, Mourinho and others.

Continue..... But with that infamous post-war abandoned property policy and the egregious institutional injustices in boundary adjustments, coupled with the widespread anti-Igbo gerrymandering, Igbos physically and psychologically lost political hold of their vested ancestral lands, all to the point of not caring anymore about their historical contiguity to the Atlantic, which their ancestors beheld and called ‘Oshimiri’ – The Great Sea.
The psychological beat-down and gang-up got so bad and institutional that some of the descendants of these Igbo ancestors (nearest to the Atlantic and now lying outside southeast) are no longer sure whether they are Igbo or not. The worst injustice was in 1976 when the Justice Nasir Boundary Adjustment Commission made a serious and targeted agenda of carving out core Igboland territories into some neighbouring states of the South-South. But they didn’t quite make an absolute success of it. They missed the southernmost Southeast lands that possess rivers that meandered through slices of Igbo-friendly South-South territories and ended up at the Atlantic, thus unwittingly (and luckily) placing Igboland and its right of access to the sea under the canons and realms of customary international law.
As it stands, international law of the sea guarantees Igbo land (whether it remains Nigerian territory or not) unhindered access to the nearest sea (in this case: the Atlantic) peacefully through any of the various short-distance rivers, waterways and tributaries that originated from Igbo land but ultimately washed into the Atlantic through contiguous South-South territories. For avoidance of doubt, there’s particularly the Obuaku confluence in Ukwa West (Abia State) that flows through greater Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom State before expanding out and washing into the near-reaches of the Atlantic. And the River Niger which ultimately joined the Atlantic through a vast network of hardly explored creeks and mangrove swamps that abut the Bight of Biafra (officially corrupted to Bight of Bonny, after the war). Nigeria is subject to the International Law of the Sea and is, therefore, bound to abide by its provisions, should the need arise in a scenario of persistent sovereign oppression of the Igbo as an identifiable (and protected) indigenous group within Nigeria. The others are the United Nations Treaty of the Sea and the African Union Treaties and Conventions on the Sea, including particularly the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, which Nigeria ratified and domesticated in 1983.
The pertinent provisions are mostly embedded in the copious protections relating to the collective economic and commercial rights of indigenous peoples lying within a Treaty nation. Ndigbo are undoubtedly an indigenous people presently lying within Nigeria. So, international law will surely come into play should a belligerent or legal conflict arise out of Nigeria’s oppressive institutional resistance to granting a seaport to Igboland – an issue so fundamental and compelling that it bears the fulcrum of what is agitating the Igbo to the point of seeking an alternative to Nigeria.
Politics / Igboland Is Not Landlocked by Lucifer1419: 11:11am On Jun 01, 2021
IT’s often said that a lie told so many times, if unchallenged, may – in course of time – begin to pass for the truth. One of such is the terrible lie, institutionally purveyed since the end of the Civil War, to the effect that Igboland is landlocked or has no access to the sea. The purpose of this essay, therefore, is to debunk this lie with some simple historical and topographical evidence that are even in plain view, if you care to dig or do some basic physical explorations of your own
Suffice it to say that it is a profound tragedy that entire generations of the immediate post-war Igbos never bothered to check but seemingly accepted this brazen institutional falsehood, largely intended to taunt the Igbo and put them down. A few that knew it to be false just didn’t care anymore. And that history was constructively banned since the end of the Civil War made it worse, plus the fact that most people don’t take physical geography (or even adventure) that serious anymore, otherwise they would have discovered that Abia, Imo and Anambra states have varying short-distance paths to the Atlantic through Imo, Azumiri and Niger rivers.
It’s not really rocket science, as you can easily confirm this if you know how to read (or plot) Google Earth; or you conquer your fear of swamp snakes and walk through these areas on foot. There are also many other hardly explored waterways and slithering tributaries, including the remote reaches of Oguta Lake and Urashi River at Oseakwa (Ihiala) that meandered through Igbo-delta wetlands to the southeastern ends of the Atlantic waterfront.

These rivers have varying lengths of short navigational paths to the Atlantic, and in some cases, are far shorter nautically (and even on footpath) than the Port Harcourt, Calabar and Ibaka seaports are to their side of the Atlantic. Many of these pathways, including particularly the ones from the outer reaches of Imo and Azumiri rivers terminate at the Atlantic at no more than 15 to 30 nautical miles to the beachhead. To put it in lay language, one nautical mile equals 1.8 kilometres.
Thus, the contiguity of Southeast (not even the greater Igboland) to the Atlantic is nautically less than the Atlantic is to the seaports in Calabar, Onne, Ibaka, Lagos and Port Harcourt. If you discount the territories unfairly excised from Igboland during state creations and the damnable boundary adjustments, it will be far less. To be sure, Ikwerre land or Igweocha which bears the greater portions of the Port Harcourt seaport was dredged up to 50 miles to the Atlantic front through the Bonny River
Onne seaport was dredged up to 60 miles to the Atlantic and Calabar seaport was dredged some 45 nautical miles to the Atlantic. Ibaka seaport is about 30 nautical miles to the Atlantic and the Lagos seaports dredged up to about 50 nautical miles to the Atlantic. Compare all these to Obuaku in Abia State, which is only 25 nautical miles to the Atlantic from the confluence of Imo and Azumiri rivers, of which Azumiri, on its separate merits, lies not more than 30 nautical miles to the Atlantic beachfront.
The less obvious one is the little-known Oseakwa (Urashi) in Ihiala (Anambra State) which is mere 18 nauticals to the Atlantic, all with its 65 feet of natural depth, unarguably comparable to no other river in Nigeria. Additionally, what is geopolitically known as Igboland today is far smaller than what it was and legally supposed to be.
As far back as 1856, Baikie – one of the earliest and credible geographers of ancient Nigeria, had this to say: “Igbo homeland, extends east and west, from the Old Kalabar river to the banks of the Kwora, Niger River, and possesses also some territory at Aboh, an Igbo clan, to the west-ward of the latter stream. On the north, it borders on Igara, Igala and A’kpoto, and it is separated from the sea only by petty tribes, all of which trace their origin to this great race” (Baikie, William Balfour, published with a sanction of Her Majesty’s Government in 1856)

Godsownchild199:
Hi Everyone, I’m 26 years old and I want to share my little story with you all. I hope you can learn a thing or two from it. This is not my main account, I had to create a new account in view of my decision to share my story on this platform. I’ve been a Nairalander since 2012 and I have benefitted from the amazing academic and career insights shared by many. So, I thought it kind to share mine to help others in this amazing community.

I graduated from the University (if I reveal this, my colleagues who are avid Nairalanders would identify me grin) some 4-5 years ago with a second class upper, then proceeded to the Nigerian Law School (still made 2:1) and served in Rivers State. I did my NYSC in a reputable law firm (name withheld) in Port Harcourt. It was quite an experience both good and bad. I left the firm after service year out of frustration due to the poor leadership and mismanagement of funds by the head of office (the guy has since been fired). Mind you, my salary as a corper was 10k (the average NYSC legal associate in Lagos earned at least 5 -7 times this amount). I had depression at this point in my life.

After my unpleasant experience at the Port Harcourt firm and months of depression coupled with deep thinking and reflection, I decided to relocate to Lagos in January 2020 hoping to find a change in perspective. Mind you, I’m not from a poor background, my parents are both highly educated and middle-class workers residing in the South. Part of my resolve in relocating to Lagos was that I wouldn’t practice law again, I’ll probably go into technology, banking, or corporate communications (I speak eloquently).

After my relocation, I teamed up with a friend to work at a technology startup somewhere on the Island but this newfound path didn’t go as planned (I call this divine providence) and I was back to sitting at home. I did a few speaking jobs (volunteering) and some petty legal jobs for my friends and family to get by. At this same time, I was aggressively applying for both legal and non-legal jobs. This decision came on the background of my Dad’s advice that I should dust my CV/Certificates, search for a job and revive my already dwindling legal career. My Dad’s attempt to connect me to a senior partner at a hotshot law firm in Victoria Island failed and I basically had to do it my way.

Fast-forward to mid-February 2020 I had three interviews in three law firms within a space of two weeks. These firms ranged from mid-sized to small-sized. I attended all the interviews, the first interview was in a small law firm managed by a Senior Advocate. The SAN immediately liked my personality and offered to instantly hire me on a monthly pay of 100k (below industry standard). The other two law firms had slightly better remuneration, great structure and were bigger in size and outlook but their recruitment process was lengthy and I had to start immediately with the SAN on my Dad’s advice. I grudgingly stayed with the small firm hoping that I’ll get an offer from either of the two mid-sized firms and then port. Unfortunately, COVID happened and one of the firms discontinued my recruitment process while the other firm out rightly rejected me. I was deeply heartbroken. In order to keep my spirit and dreams alive, my Dad kept drumming into my ears that a smaller firm meant more work and a better learning experience. He kept reiterating the need to “know” the law and stop chasing money (what all senior lawyers say ). So, I was basically stuck with this 100k job, trust me at first the environment was deadening and monotonous (reading law reports and writing legal opinions every day isn’t fun at all cry). I felt like ditching my Old man’s advice and resigning during this period but due to COVID, I had to borrow commonsense and stay back. Little did I know that staying back was the best decision I would ever make to date, all thanks to God, my Dad and COVID.

While 100k may sound fair to most people, kindly note that some of my colleagues (with the same academic grades as mine) in top firms earned a monthly average of 250k or more. This awareness made me very discontent and unhappy but I still hung on to my job (a bird in hand is worth more than two in the bush) besides, who quits his or her job in the midst of a COVID induced global economic crises.

Then in October 2020, everything changed! My boss got this very big personal legal project, it was really big and my boss asked me to come on board the project team. I was then paid the sum of N2.5Million for my participation and input in the project. Later on, another personal project came through, although little. I did not even do much this time and my boss gifted me 500 Pounds from the project. All of this financial largess is outside my boss’ magnanimity in other areas like superb mentoring, paying for my professional certifications, and giving me advice (my boss can advise for Africa grin), etc. Mind you, no matter how much I’m gifted or paid from the personal projects handled by my boss, my salary is still fully paid and as at when due. All these legal projects are reflected in my CV and have greatly boosted my career prospect. These projects have also helped me to build an impressive Linkedin profile and I’m currently very active in that space.

Recently, I got involved in another personal legal project with my boss and was paid N2 Million from the project fees. Sometimes, I look back at the events of my life and ask myself how I got to this pivotal point. If I hadn’t listened to my Dad’s advice and sought God’s face, I don’t think I would enjoy this type of privilege. I remember asking God for a multinational job but here I was, stuck with a 100k job completely unaware that God put a multinational remuneration in a small office with barely 8 employees. I’ve only worked for a year and 3 months but I’ve achieved what some people haven’t achieved in 3-5 years (career-wise and financially). Please don’t reject certain little offers that come your way, pray to God and seek advice where possible. Some blessings come in disguises and you may never know. This is my little grace-filled career story; I hope it inspires someone today. I want to thank God Almighty for his grace in my career and my lovely parents for their advice and tremendous support.

PS: I have abridged my story to hide certain facts and information for my personal safety and that of my office and boss. My story may sound too good to be true but believe me, it is absolutely true.
