Well my choice and my opinion. By the way, am not in support of anybody. I jst hate the fact that fani kayode politicise everything about this government forgetting that his party ruined this country for good sixteen years. Truth be told... this country is ruined by PDPs. And if APC perform woefully, mark my moniker, I will come out and criticise against them.

Dear Nairalanders,

It has been almost 4 years now that I joined the politics section of Nairaland. I have had a lot of fun with you guys, though a lot of you disrespect me on the guise of being anonymous, but I take that as the joys and grins of being on social media.

My campaigns on Nairaland have been tremendously successful, and I would mention a few of our successes:

-We have had over 10 articles of mine published in major Nigerian newpapers. Which shaped the political discussions in Nigeria tremendously. A particular article that was published by at least 4 Nigerian Media houses was the "The Chronicles of Missing things", published on Vanguard, Osundefender, Punch and News Rescue.

-CramJones have been mentioned on AIT at least 2 times - Airing his opinions. Same for Saharareporters "Keeping it Real"

-Our revelations have made the government of the day change plans that were anti-people.

-CramJones was the first in March to reveal how over $1 billion was distributed by GEJ and stated the amounts given to Dokpesi and Linda Ikeji. Revelations which everyone now sees today.

Though I no longer belong to any political party, I would like to say thank you for a very robust political discussion we've had here. I thank the moderators - lalasticlala, seun, ishilove and others who have tried their best to maintain decorum on this forum.

For this reason, I would be doing a Linda Ikeji-like end-of-year give away of $500. I will blindly pick a random commenter on this thread, who would be announced on Saturday as the winner of this cash price.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

EducationFrank Talk: When SS2 Pupils Can’t Spell Their Names by LuckyLadolce(op): 8:32am On Dec 05, 2015
Olabisi Deji-Folutile

Many of us think we know the extent of the rot in Nigeria’s education sector, but, believe me, what we know is probably just the tip of the iceberg. For instance, I never knew it was possible for a secondary school pupil in this country not to have an answer to as simple a question as “when were you born?’’ But alas, a girl, who was supposedly in SS2 in Imo State, declared that she was born in 1905. Sensing that something was wrong with the answer from the facial expressions of everyone around her, she changed the date to 1945. When asked to write her name, she wrote “Ezne” instead of “Ezinne.”

If you think I made this up or it’s an exaggeration, other examples of blunders from some of these schoolchildren will make you think otherwise. A pupil in JSS2 was asked to write “Lizard” and he wrote “Eliza.” Another one in SS2 defined a citizen as “anyone who can go anywhere and do anyhow.’’ A Christian pupil in JSS2 could not open the Book of Numbers in the Bible, while some pupils in JSS1 did not see anything wrong with saying, “Our daddy are going to work.’’

The teachers are not left out. A teacher in a private primary school, I learnt, sent a note to a parent informing her that “her daughter have not bring her note to class.’’ Another teacher in a secondary school in Badagry, Lagos State, is fond of telling his pupils: “I see you here, I see you there, are you twice?” Another one asks his pupils to “open the window and let the climate come in,’’ while a host of others teach in their dialects.

I have come to the sad conclusion that no matter what I write, no magic will scale up the performance of a lot of Nigerian children in external examinations in the next 10 years, at least. More than one million students failed the 2014 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination. Out of the 1,705,976 candidates that sat the exam, 1,176,551 performed below the minimum requirement for admission to any Nigerian university. Only 529,425 candidates (31.28 per cent) had credit in five subjects including English and Mathematics.

Ironically, Ghanaian students have consistently won the prizes for the top three positions of the examination body at the international awards for best candidates in its five-member countries.

If current results are harvests of seeds sown in the past, as some may argue, I’m afraid of what awaits us in the future. Certainly, the seeds we are sowing now cannot yield any meaningful fruit, no, not in the nearest future. I must admit that, for the children of the elite and the middle class, the picture is far rosier. The ones I pity are the children of poor Nigerians. For them, it is indeed a dim future.

Compare a typical Nigerian child to someone like Chester Smith, a young chap I met during my tour of the Space Centre in Houston, the United States of America. Now 27, Chester works at the space centre. But, he was mentored by scientists and astronomers at the space centre right from his secondary school days. He had many opportunities of visiting the centre. This fuelled his imagination and helped him to follow the path that would make him live his dream.

I must confess that even as an adult, I found the space centre mind-boggling. There are more than 400 space artefacts, including a moon rock that one can touch. Seeing mission control room from where human space missions and the operations of the International Space Centre are monitored gave one this behind-the-scenes look at space exploration. I even saw one of the astronauts, live; an experience that our guide said was uncommon. Seeing the most powerful rocket ever built and watching the live mission updates and the future of human space were simply amazing. At a time, I felt as if I was lost in space myself.

Every year, more than 100,000 teachers and students around the world visit the space centre. Sadly, these are the same children that Nigerian kids who can’t spell their names are expected to compete with in this ever-growing and dynamic world. How possible is this?

It is unfortunate that the children of the poor in this country will always bear the brunt of our poor education system. And it doesn’t have to be so. Almost 90 per cent of Ghana’s children are accessing quality education at government’s expense. Some even aver that the country is spending proportionately more on education than the United Kingdom.

The problem with Nigeria goes beyond poor funding. Sometimes, the little funds available are not well-utilised. I once wrote on billions of naira meant for primary education rotting away at the Central Bank of Nigeria. The money is still there. We are not just a serious country.

The Indian education system is one of the poorly funded in the world, yet it manages to maintain a standard that can compare with China’s, which is known to be one of the best in the world.

While serious governments are thinking of how to make their children perform better, we are playing kites with our own kids. Even, the United Kingdom that we look up to as a good destination for education recently took over 60 mathematics teachers from China to teach pupils in its centres of excellence.

In the same vein, China that many developed countries believe to be the best in mathematics still encourages its teachers to be more intelligent in both the way they teach the subject, and the work they require of their students. The teachers are expected to hook on to locally-organised teachers’ research group where they can get suggestions for good lesson plans. That is not all. The teachers are expected to complete between 240 and 540 hours of further training every five years. Anyone that does not reach a certain level is fired. No wonder, China has continued its ascent as a major economic power.

But, here government at all levels keeps paying lip service to education. Our minister is only interested in fighting corruption in the system. He will deal with corrupt lecturers and teachers. What does that mean? As for the governors, they value their political ambition above the lives of Nigerian children.

The governors keep deceiving themselves that they are working. Even when they understand the problems, they lack the political will to proffer solutions. Take for instance the case of the Comrade governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, who publicly ridiculed a teacher who could not read. When it was time to choose between ensuring quality education in the state and his second term ambition, he gladly chose the latter.

Other governors have accused their teachers of not being able to solve primary three mathematics, yet they have retained them. They can’t afford the political backlash that sacking them would generate. Which country does that and makes progress?

How can we be keeping teachers who ask their pupils to “open the window for climate to come in” in the system in the 21st century? No amount of training and retraining can redeem such teachers.

We will keep dreaming of a better country forever until we address the problems bedevilling our education sector. Only quality education can give us the hope of quality leadership.

Investment in education goes beyond structures. Government at all levels should engage smart teachers. There should be training and retraining programmes for them, and they should be forced to engage in self-development as is being done in serious nations of the world.

CrimeEx-us Naval Officer Escapes Rape Attack In Ekiti by LuckyLadolce(op): 8:07am On Dec 05, 2015
Kamarudeen Ogundele

The police in Ekiti State have arrested three persons in connection with a robbery attack on a retired United States Naval officer, Mrs. Titilope Ayeni-Are.

The woman had just arrived Nigeria from the US after being away for over 12 years. She was due to resume her new role as a lecturer in one of the tertiary institutions in the state when the incident occurred.

The first robbery attack occurred on Sunday, August 9 when burglars invaded her residence at Charity Street, behind Petim Sawmill, Adehun, Ado Ekiti, the state capital, while she was away in church between 9.15 am and 1.45pm. Before her arrival, valuable items including three laptops, two DVD players, three mobile phones and a modem had been stolen.

Policemen recovered a bunch of keys with which the robbers gained access into the house.

Three days later, when she visited the Ado Ekiti office of Etisalat to retrieve her stolen line, she was told the line was still being used, which prompted her request for the call log.

Investigation revealed that the most frequent caller of the line was one Funke Adenowo, a cleaner at First Bank, Opopogboro Branch, suspected to be the girlfriend of one of the burglars.

Following investigations, police later arrested two brothers, Bode and Wale Fakorede as well as one Segun, who came from Ibadan to buy two of the three stolen laptops.

Wale and Bode were granted bail after they were arraigned before an Ado Ekiti Magistrate’s Court.

After their bail, Wale reportedly led another robbery attack on the house on November 24, where he attacked Ayeni-Are with a machete. The suspect was said to have attempted to rape her also before police intervention.

She said, “My five-year-old son was with me at the time. Wale, who led the other gang members I could not identify, told me to look at him very well. He said he planned to kill me. I was left in the pool of my blood, after which he went to ransack the bedrooms.

“He went back to switch on the generator and asked about where I kept money, my ATM card and PIN number. He asked about my husband and I told him that he was in America. He asked from my son where his father was and my son told him that his dad is in America.

“He asked for my car keys, particularly that of a Pathfinder SUV, I told him that I didn’t have any such vehicle. He asked about the three laptops, which were earlier stolen, I replied that I had given them out. He then removed my necklace.

“He asked me if I knew where they sent him after the first attack, I told him that it was the court that sent him there. He said that throughout the time, he never had the opportunity of enjoying sex and that it was now an opportunity to do it with me.

“The other accomplice, whom he came with, kicked against what he intended to do but he threatened him. He said he would do it right in front of my son for him (my son) to see the action.

“He ordered me to go back to the bedroom and unzipped his trousers and it was in that process that my phone rang. He dragged me out of the house to the back door and dragged me to a well. He attempted to throw me inside the well.

“When I fell off the well, he pinned me to the wall and in the course of the struggle, a rope and the cloth with which he gagged me removed and I screamed ‘O ti pa mi o, oti pa mi o’ (He has killed me, he has killed me).

“I ran towards the gate but unknown to me, my neighbours had already called the police.”

The suspects were later arrested.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Alberto Adeyemi, said the Department of Criminal Investigations in the state, had swung into action and started an investigation into the case.

Adeyemi said, “Yes, I am aware of the case. We are still investigating the incident and it is being handled by the DCI after the case was transferred from the Oke-Ila Police Station which conducted preliminary investigations.

“The investigation is still ongoing and when we conclude our investigation, the suspects involved will be charged to court.

Bukola Adebayo

Catfish is one of the most popular and readily available fish in Nigeria. In fact, its delicacy – irresistible to many people – is very common at social gatherings.

It tastes great and is affordable when compared to other varieties of fresh fish in the market.

But do you know that the omega 6 fatty acids in catfish can increase your risk of getting blood clots, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and some cancers?

Though doctors say fish is a better and healthier option than meat, they quickly add that not all types of fish are good for the heart.

Nutritionists say that catfish is loaded with bad fat and high cholesterol that encourage clotting of the blood, a condition whereby blood flow is impeded. This may lead to cardiac arrest, thrombosis and, in some cases, heart attacks.

A cardiologist, Dr. Jane Anisulowo, says that farm or home-grown catfish is the worst example in this regard, as it contains more fatty hormones than the ones harvested from natural water.

Anisulowo says, “Fish is better than meat, no doubt. It digests easily and it contains proteins. However, catfish is not really a good option, especially the ones they sell these days, which are cultivated with hormonal feeds that are filled with steroids and other fattening chemicals just to make them profitable. These chemicals are cancerous in nature.

“Also, they contain so much oil that you can almost taste it. Fish, generally, contains oil, but catfish has oil in its skin. That is what makes it so oily and unhealthy.

“It also contains a lot of poly unsaturated fat that does not only make you fat but also settles in the blood stream. That is very dangerous because when blood fails to get to an organ, it fails and suffers paralysis.”

A study conducted by the National Institute of Health in 2012, using over 1000 species of the fish in different water shows that catfish contains a high amount of unfavourable omega-6 fat that causes inflammation in the body.

According to the researchers, three-ounce portion of catfish contains the same amount of bad fats found in red meat.

This is not to say that one should give up eating the fish as catfish contains some nutrients such as Omega3 fatty acids that are good for the body.

Anisulowo says, “If you can get the one from the river, which is rare in most cities, then you may eat it twice a month. But if the only one you can get is the one that is being reared by farmers, you don’t have to eat at all, or just eat it when it is partially smoked. In that way, some of the fats would have been lost in the process. Better still, there are some other species of fish that are oily but they contain good fats and are more nutritious.”

Here are some other species that you can add to your diet:

Mackerel

They are popularly known as Titus fish. The oily meat found on mackerel is its main health benefit. The fish oil, which is also known as omega-3 fatty acid, can be so beneficial that it is used as a supplement.

It lowers triglycerides. High levels of triglycerides in the body have been linked to heart disease and stroke. The most common causes of a high triglyceride level are obesity and poorly maintained diabetes, mainly stemming from an inactive lifestyle.

Some researchers have found out that omega-3 fatty acid is even more effective in reducing heart attacks than some commonly-prescribed drugs.

Mackerel and other fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids are good for the blood. They help to boost blood circulation and lower blood pressure.

Tilapia

Tilapia is a high-quality fish. It has proteins and contains all the essential amino acids your body requires from food diet to help to build proteins. One portion of tilapia cooked using dry heat contains about 26 grammes of protein. The Institute of Medicine recommends that adult men consume at least 56 grammes of protein, adult women consume at least 46 grammes and pregnant and nursing women consume 71 grammes of protein each day. Eating tilapia can help you to achieve that.

It may help in weight control. Tilapia is naturally low in fat, and only contains about 128 calories in each portion. According to a study published in a 2006 edition of “The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation”, subjects who consumed eight grammes of tilapia each week showed an improved body weight .
