MetalJigsaw:
IS NIGERIA'S SUPER EAGLES UP TO SOMETHING IN RUSSIA?

When English referee Michael Oliver blew the full-time whistle to bring the game between Poland and Nigeria to a close on Friday night, the Super Eagles won a second successive friendly against a World Cup-bound team. In so doing the Nigerians, ranked 52nd in the world by FIFA, had beaten two teams ranked in the top six.
The Eagles beat Argentina 4-2 in Krasnodar in November. It seemed like a fluke given Nigeria had only ever defeated La Albiceleste once before. Both were friendlies and Lionel Messi didn't play in the 2011 4-1 defeat in Abuja. When Argentina arranged a rematch to set the record straight, they won 3-1 with Messi in the team. It seemed like a warning to never try that again.
Nigeria has met Argentina five times in competitive matches. The two played a goalless draw in the 1995 Confederations Cup. Nigeria has lost all four World Cup matches. Messi personally saw to it that record was kept intact in Brazil. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored twice. Marcus Rojo finished the job to deny the Eagles an unlikely draw after Nigeria had come back twice through Ahmed Musa.
Nigeria’s recent friendly win against Argentina was therefore dismissed by many as a one-off. More recent events seem to suggest otherwise.
Argentina beat Italy 2-0 on Friday without Messi. It was a match that featured Gianluigi Buffon in goal. Gigi had made a U-turn on his retirement decision after the Azzurri spectacularly failed to make it to Russia. Argentina did not look in any way threatened by the Italians at the Etihad stadium in Manchester. Goals from Ever Banega and Manuel Lanzini settled the tie. It was a deserved win on a night Sergio Aguero did not get a chance to play in front of his club fans due to injury.
The result suggests Messi's absence is no excuse for Argentina’s loss against Nigeria. Rather, the Argentines lost to a better team in the second half of that match. Credit must go to the Nigerians who had to come back from 2-0 down to beat the former world champions. It demonstrated character and determination, traits needed to win tournaments and grind out results in hostile environments.
Friday’s 1-0 win over Poland took place in Wroclaw with Robert Lewandowski on show. Gernot Rohr's squad gave a good account of itself. Poland only just dominated possession, 56:44%. All other
statistical categories save shots on target were nearly even and Nigeria had an answer in goal for Robert Lewandowski: 19-year-old Francis Uzoho. The Deportivo de la Coruna keeper made six saves on the night. On the one occasion the youngster needed help Leon Balogun was there to clear the ball off the line. Victor Moses’ strike from the penalty spot in the 61st minute gave the Nigerians the win.
Don't forget the Super Eagles emerged from a difficult CAF qualifying group undefeated to earn a place in Russia. The team had the better of reigning African champions Cameroon, the highest ranking African side, Algeria, and 2012 African champions Zambia. Cameroon suffered its biggest loss to Nigeria in the process, a 4-0 defeat in Uyo. Gernot Rohr's senior team is on a five-match unbeaten run that includes the World Cup qualifying and the victory in Poland but not the CHAN tournament that features only African-based players.
While it can be argued the victory over Argentina was a year ago, when the South American side was struggling in CONMEBOL qualifying, Poland were fresh off winning their UEFA group to qualify for Russia. Lewandowski scored 16 times in 10 matches, most in the entire qualifying process.
Argentina already knows it must take Nigeria seriously. Iceland and Croatia, also in Group D with the Super Eagles, had best do their homework. There is something about this team that speaks of greatness. It may not win the trophy in Russia but with the youngest team in the tournament, great things can be expected in the future.

Morning guys/ladies.
On this issue of hating on players as perceived from d criticism dat some give. D only thing I can say is dat some of us go abt our criticism d wrong way.
Wen u want to criticize a player dat u genuinely love ND want to get beta u start from a good point ND den d bad, unless d player was piss poor on d day.
Some of us here have kids in sch. Wen they bring home their report card u dnt go criticizing d c's before complimenting d A's...
Ndidi was massive, but he needs to up his game wen it comes to passing.... Dats how u criticize..
Iheanacho was very tactically disciplined, but his pass to mahrez was not gud and dat made it easier for mahrez to lose possession leading to d goal... Dats constructive criticism.
Alot of us kept mentioning his poor first touch... ND seeing how it's not be mentioned in d last 20pages at least m assuming he has worked on it, but Av not seen anyone come to compliment him for dat.. Please let's all be constructive in d way we criticize... Have a lovely day everyone. smiley

So because other kids are bad you won't correct urs wen he is wrong?? undecided
somehow:
And you think he's the worst of all coaches out out there character wise? Tried reading about some of the big names out there? What exactly makes him a bad character person? Let's use 2 incidence as a case study to see if it's just him or other good coaches have same traits.

BTW, what working system does fortuna sittard have that didn't win them a pencil in 25 years? If the so called system was working, they wouldn't be where they are. To make things happen, you need people with strong opinionated mindset. Anyways since they feel he can't be worked with even after setting all the records the club currently have, they can as well part ways as done already.

Spoken like a true professional
tbaba1234:
Manu Garba abandoned his best under 20 players on the bench and went for those who were largely still homebased to help them find clubs. The result was a poor performance which did not help anyone find good European clubs.

If you choose your best players regardless of where they are based. The chance for a good tournament is high. This improves the chances for the home-based to find good clubs.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Lucque: 8:40am On Feb 15, 2018
How did nothing stop him,?? he wasn't called na... E for just go buy GwG jersey fly himself to camp and join d players??... I dnt believe it will affect our HG development if we pick 90%
FB based on merit ND quality.
Mind u we have been using HG all this while ND it has not translated into anytin tangible... D quality we parade in u-20 world cups are always not up to d expectations... ND saying dat starting now to integrate FB into d fold will affect grassroots development is not true cos we have been using HG since ND I dnt see much development
grin
Kog45:
I don't think there is anything like HG rule but Alaba agent didn't do his home work properly and mind you if Alaba was willing to.play for us nothing stop him.

Those that are playing for another country are not the ready to play for us or do you want to say Manuel Akanji was willing cos he has a Father who our called a local bred player who should be his guardian but the boy opted for Switzerland.

My point is this throwing opened U 20 to FBs in the name of catching them young should be done in a way that would not affect the home grown, that's why I suggest HG 80% FB 20 or HG 70% FB 30%.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Lucque: 8:32am On Feb 15, 2018
M wit u sir... Is it d u-20 dat will develop our football culture.... Or proper academies ND grassroots programs.??...lets not be too HG biased. Infact let it be based on quality dat we pick... We can also snatch d FG easier in these age grade competitions and integrate dem...
forgiveness:
What about if the HG doesn't have the quality of FB and they are fighting for the same position, should we drop the better one and pick the lesser one because we want HG?

Is it about HG or about choosing the best?

Please, don't forget that the same HG rule denied us David Alaba.
