I really do not understand why some individuals will post about just anything without fully knowing or chose to distort the news. It's on tv and even anyone can watch online on enca live. Shoprite in jeppestown was attacked, PeP Store was attacked and looted, Russel which is a furniture store was attacked and looted. These 3 stores are Part of South African chain stores which were amongst stores looted and destroyed. Today, this afternoon, the metro bus system in the whole of Johannesburg has been suspended due to looting of shops and attacks on motorists. Why act like this attack yesterday was directed at Nigerians. The taxi drivers association came out a few days ago to denounce the violence regarding the one in Pretoria were it was alleged that a "Nigerian" shot and killed a taxi driver who accosted that individual after witnessing him selling drugs to a high school boy. It was never confirmed officially if the person was actually a Nigerian. Unfortunately Nigerians have earned such a very bad reputation here that even people from other countries would rather claim to be Nigerians when involved in illegal acts. I was shocked while talking to a few friends when they confirmed to me that things had gotten worse over the years with Nigerian involvements in crime. He mentioned an incident of kidnapping a young man who came to inspect a camera advertised online for sale. They tried to wrestle his money from him and eventually got into a fight and he was thrown down from a building. Unknown to them that he didn't come alone and his friend sitting in the car waiting saw him drop from above like a sack of rice. He then called the police immediately and they came and closed off the whole building preventing any departures. Well who was/were arrested ? Your guess is as good as mine. Lastly for heavens sake, I saw another video of some Of our guys saying they are in Soshanguve and they were been harassed, please biko my people, LEAVE THE TOWNSHIP for the locals. What are you looking for in the township? Years ago, it was almost unheard of that a Nigerian lives in the township. |

August 31, 2014 – Mars Petcare US has announced it is expanding last week’s voluntary recall of Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food due to the possible presence of a foreign material. As reported here last week, the recall still affects 22 bags shipped to Dollar General across four U.S. states. However, it now is being expanded to include 55-pound bags of Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food products sold in Sam’s Club in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Bags may contain small metal fragments which could have entered the packages during the production process. The foreign material is not embedded in the food itself yet may present a risk of injury if consumed. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-recall/pedigree-dog-food-recall-expanded/ |

Ingredients sourced in the USA are safer than ingredients sourced from China, so know your brand check their websites One thing to note: While some dog foods proudly fly American flags on their packaging or tout that they are “made in America”, that doesn’t mean the ingredients are all sourced in the U.S. It means they are assembled in the U.S. Most manufacturers will state all ingredients sourced from their country as we all know about 2012 dog food recall that rocked the USA, killed pets, infected humans & vet bills that were so high Food that were recalled. 4. Colorants Coloring agents are often added to pet foods to modify the appearance of highly processed foods, providing an artificial "rich and meaty" look in an attempt to make the food appear more appealing to pet owners. Even pet brands that market themselves as healthy and holistic are guilty of using artificial colors. Many of the artificial coloring agents used in dog foods have been associated with potential problems. FD&C Red No. 40 is a possible carcinogen but is still widely used to keep meat looking fresh. Blue No. 2 is thought to increase dogs' sensitivity to viruses. Another color that is commonly used but that has not been fully tested is Yellow No. 5. Both Red No. 2 and Violet No. 1 were banned by the FDA in the mid-seventies as possible carcinogens but prior to that were widely used in pet foods. It's important to remember that artificial food colors or dyes used in pet foods are not for the benefit of dogs or cats — they're simply added to satisfy the pet owner's ideals of how a pet food "should" look. Flint River Ranch premium pet foods and treats for cats and dogs contain absolutely no artificial colors or dyes.

Extract from dog food advisor 3. Synthetic Dog Food Preservatives Could Be Toxic to Your Pet When fed daily for a lifetime, synthetic dog food preservatives could be toxic to your pet. Here’s why… Since animal fats are a crucial part of every dog food, they’re also subject to spoilage — becoming rancid shortly after manufacture. To extend the shelf life of any pet food, suppliers must add a preservative to many fat or oil ingredients. However, food preservatives aren’t all the same. They can be classified as either natural — or artificial. Natural preservatives are usually made from anti-oxidants — like vitamins C or E. You’ll see them printed on a dog food ingredients list using some form of the word “tocopherol” or “ascorbate”. These items typically look like this… “…chicken fat preserved with alpha-tocopherol” Natural preservatives are typically considered safe. Banned from Cat Food but OK for Dogs? However, artificial preservatives are another story. Used long term, they can add a notable risk of toxicity to any dog food. For example, take the moisture preservative, propylene glycol. You may recognize propylene glycol by its more infamous use in certain types of non-automotive anti-freeze. Now, to be fair, this chemical is considered far less toxic than its more dangerous cousin, ethylene glycol. However, due to its proven risk of blood toxicity, propylene glycol has been banned by the FDA for use in cat food. Yet it’s still used to preservative dog food. Dog Food Preservative or Toxic Pesticide? Ethoxyquin is another artificial preservative to watch for on a label. ( normally found in a lot of fish meal formula) That’s because ethoxyquin is not only used as a preservative but also as a pesticide — and as a hardening agent for making synthetic rubber. Ethoxyquin has been under investigation by the FDA as a possible cause for certain liver and blood problems. Yet to this day, it’s still commonly found in many popular brands of dog food. Two More Dubious Preservatives Here are two more chemical bad guys to watch out for… Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) The World Health Organization openly names both BHT and BHA as suspicious cancer-causing compounds. Plus the State of California has now identified BHA as a possible carcinogen, too. Considering these troubling issues, you’d think these two dubious preservatives would be intentionally shunned by the pet food industry. Unfortunately, both BHA and BHT can still be found in a number of commercial dog foods. The Bottom Line Dogs are a captive audience. They have no choice but to eat what we put in front of them. The same food — consumed day after day. Week after week. Year after year. It’s that cumulative exposure that keeps us up at mights. That additive effect of using any artificial preservative relentlessly — especially when it’s suspected of causing cancer. So, avoid dog foods made with artificial preservatives. Here’s a list of some of the more common chemical additives… Propylene glycol Ethoxyquin BHA BHT TBHQ Propyl gallate contains EU approved antioxidant' or 'contains EEC permitted preservatives'. Who knows? Avoiding these dangerous dog food preservatives may just add years of good health to your pet’s life. |
2. Know your FAT source Just as protein is a crucial component to a dog’s diet, so too is fat, which provides many health benefits. The building blocks of fats are fatty acids, some of which dogs require in their diet because their body cannot make them. These are called essential fatty acids and are divided into two groups, the omega-3 and the omega-6 fatty acids. The Good Like protein, the fat component of commercial dog food should come from named sources. Below is a list of higher quality fat sources in dog food. You will notice that you can recognize the exact source of each of these. THE GOOD. chicken fat herring oil canola oil sunflower oil safflower oil flax oil beef fat lamb fat THE BAD animal fat poultry fat vegetable oil mineral oil beef tallow lard That list looks scary. Let’s take a look at animal fat. According to AAFCO, here is the definition of animal fat: Animal fat is obtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial process of rendering. The issue with animal fat is that we really don’t know where it comes from. It could be from by-products, slaughterhouse waste, dead or diseased farm animals, and worse (you don’t want to know). Not very appetizing is it? |
You will equip yourself better by knowing what goes in your dog food. Dogs can't read ingredients but we can Always always read ingredients listed on your dog food, as much as a lot of people are concerned about protein content " the higher the better does not mean it's good protein, the 30% you see might not be what you are getting in most case if you can't read food labels. Most dog food with good quality of protein will cost more than food with by-product protein. What to avoid or what to look for when purchasing dog food, is not just about you but your loved ones as well. 1 Protein- it must always be a named animal sourced protein e.g chicken meal, lamb meal, beef meal etc if there is fish it must also be named not generic ( fish meal) it must state e.g salmon meal, white fish meal , herring meal etc Avoid by- products e.g Chicken by-products as they include head, feet, entrails, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, stomach, bones, blood, intestines, and any other parts of the carcass not fit for human consumption,” Meat by-products or meat meal. Both are euphemisms for the parts of animals that wouldn’t be considered meat by any smart consumer. The well-known phrase “meat byproducts” is a misnomer since these byproducts contain little, if any meat at all. Meat meal can contain the boiled down flesh of animals we would find unacceptable for consumption. This can include zoo animals, road kill, and 4-D (dead, diseased, disabled, dying) livestock. Most shockingly, this can also include dogs and cats Chicken meal, beef meal, lamb meal vs chicken, beef or lamb ( please note no by-products) Chicken meal, lamb meal, etc according to the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), is the dry rendered product from a combination of clean chicken flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from whole carcasses of chicken, exclusive of feathers, heads, feet and entrails. A meal in general is "an ingredient which has been ground or otherwise reduced in particle size. Chicken meal is ground up chicken meat that has been carefully dried to a moisture level of 10%. The protein content is 65% and the fat level is 12%. Regular chicken, lamb, beef contains about 70% water with 18% protein and 5% fat. So bear in mind that food labels are listed in order of weight so if your 1st ingredient list is e.g chicken, ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, soy meal, wheat, rice gluten, rice, animal fat etc etc etc everything from 1st ingredient to fat source is what makes up the bulk of your dog food, bear in mind what will be left after the chicken is cooked & the water is removed? Also note your plant ingredients Soy is a plant protein used by pet food companies to boost protein content and add bulk. Because plant proteins are less expensive than meat proteins, pet food manufacturers use them to increase profit margins. Common plant-based protein sources used in your pet's food include corn-gluten meal and soybean meal. So if we calculate all this before processing are you really getting your hard earned paid 30% protein?

Whoa, excellent thread, oh my, educative, selfless, real, if you are young and you see these issues like these, then there is hope for Nigeria. By the way I have been out of Nigeria for over a decade, though never really out as I am home multiple times yearly, worked as a professional , travelled very very vastly, but you now what?In these so called developed countries, it's a rat race! Mortgages ( called bond) in some countries is what it is, 'BOND', you are bonded to liability for as long as it takes. I have no issues with people traveling out, it's nice to be exposed, but the issue is when you get caught up in the rat race, by the time you take time to compare your expectation to the reality on ground, time is gone. When people intend to travel, they expect to be very well off, truth is if most people could be shown retroactively what the future holds and the sojourn overseas will be, I promise most will think differently. Problems starts from the so called roll models, actors, artists, etc. nollywood movies who's portrayal of success in the movies are never complete with the characters traveling overseas and returning after years big and rich, portraying the returnees as better and superior than those back home. 'You have spoken and let he or she who has a brain rethink'. |
Hi, I am actually very surprised at your post & personally feel you are exaggerating, we all know when you travel out from airport your laptop has to be scanned separately out of the bag or pouch in a separate tray with cellphone, coins e.t.c how do the thieves then steal it as it is hand luggage? Let us all ask ourselves how many people chek-in laptops? As you know in SA & a whole lot of countries too nobody checks your hand luggage as it goes through a scanner, so far I only know in Nigeria MMA where security before check-in goes through your bags. All I am saying is for someone who travels a lot between these 2 countries you sound like a good story teller. |
@play mode, since you have said that your wife is looking forward to move & she knows all things Nigerian then your problem is half solved. Please advise if you have family support back home, as your wife & kids will rely on that to settle. You have been out of Nigerian for a long time & things have really changed & they are getting better. I was in Nigeria last year & I had the time of my life, I guess just like going to any country in the world you need to be careful where & who you hang around with, i have travelled to a lot of places but when i advised hubby to let me be, he was worried just like you so when visited Lagos I did everything normal to just show that things aren't as crazy as you have read, we jogged everyday along the highway ( express), even forced hubby to abandon the car & we took a taxi to Oshodi as I wanted to experience the real feel of Lagos, drove to Yaba Market & yes they have malls ( spur, mug & bean, woollies, identity, mango, zara, movies & etc hey they have shoprite too ( I know shoprite is for the low income group in SA but hey it does the trick when you are in Nigeria), electricity was constant too. I wanted to experience Lagos for what it is & I am glad I did & if I listened or took to Heart to what other people were saying on Nairaland regarding Nigeria I would have not enjoyed it or i would have been paranoid, I will say this a lot of Nigerian are not good ambassadors for their country & the media out there is not helping as well, the Nigeria you read about or see on Tv is very different from the real Nigeria. Wish you you all the best |

@wellmax, what game are you watching? |
@ngwana.mobu you are so on point, it is extremely sad that has happened to the poor guy nobody should be treated like that, we all deserve to be treated fair. It paints a very bad pic of SA But all Nigerians commenting here, have you ever asked your self should you ever have a chance of asking an average South African about Nigerians what will their answers be? Xenophobic Attacks in most cases are carried out by uneducated South Africans & it's a pity that majority of Nigerians you see in SA are also not being great ambassador of Nigeria either, 90% of Nigerians in SA are doing nothing but hustling, if you go to Hillbrow , Kempton park you will see nothing but Nigerians selling drugs in broad daylight, when you drive through & you happen to slow down you will be amazed at how they start approaching your car, you will also be shocked that there are always police cars in the vicinity chatting to them & collecting bribe, if you go to Pretoria you get a lot of hard working honest Nigerians with boards hustling for clients for their Salons, lots who owns stores e.t.c And a few educated Nigerians who are professionals especially doctors, accountants, bankers are really trying to change the normal perception about an average Nigerian that South African are so used to see everywhere. Not everything you read & hear is true but it is irritating & embarrassing that 90%of the time when there is a drug bust, credit card fraud & scams it's always Nigerians involved. Nigerians are not the only nationality in SA but it just happens that those who are here are really not flying the green & white flag high, you have people from all the world, Africa but you will hardly hear anything bad about them, if you go to the airport cargo section you always see Nigerians sending coffins home & they will still be arguing about money right there, so my fellow Nigerians I hope you will understand why Nigerians are looked at that way in South Africa. We have lots of good Nigerians & but the bad ones are outnumbering them in SA & that is the sad truth. |
Well guys, was it not Bafana Bafana playing? Were we really expecting anything different? They always have some lame story about confidence & nerves e.t.c they are are wasting tax payers money, I weep for my country, I don't blame people for not going to support them, they play crap period. |
It will be really nice to have, ohh well the struggle continues |
When will Nairaland have an app to able users to connect, post pics etc effortlessly? |
@Mizzocho, Totally disagree, just like any country in the world SA has its own problems, if SA citizens only go to universities because of loans/ bursaries clearly majority will be educated & don't you think there are criteria in place (grades, pass mark) to adhere to get this loans/ bursaries, so you think students will choose to burn the midnight oil so one day after matric they will get a bursary of which the tuition is paid to the institution & not to them, really? & if so won't they have uni certificates after to better their lives? As for you saying they can't take care of their kids, do you believe everything you read on the news? Why can't we be realistic, atleast there is welfare programme in place to assist those who don't work & those who earn under R33 600 per year if you are single, If you are married, your combined income should not be above R 67 000 per year, don't other countries e. UK, USA have that in place for low income groups? Nigerians in diaspora who got their papers right a high percentage of them had to marry citizens of wherever country they find themselves to regularize their stay, it is just too late to digress my points but from your comment you don't sound educated or informed at all. |
"It's true!! Kanye and I are expecting a baby," Kardashian, 32, wrote on her personal blog. "Looking forward to great new beginnings in 2013 and to starting a family," she added. Kardashian began dating West in April, some six months after filing for divorce from basketball player Kris Humphries. The two were married for 72 days following a lavish, made-for-TV wedding. Their divorce has yet to be finalized. Rapper Kanye West and reality TV star Kim Kardashian are expecting a child, Kardashian said on Monday shortly after West announced her pregnancy to fans at a concert. Kardashian is about 12 weeks pregnant, according to U.S. media reports. Fans and family took to Twitter to congratulate the celebrity power couple, and to speculate whether the new baby's name would begin with a K, in line with Kardashian family tradition. "Been wanting to shout from the rooftops with joy and now I can!" wrote Kardashian's sister Kourtney. "Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!" Kardashian's brother-in-law, basketball player Lamar Odom, who has been open about struggling to have a baby with wife and "The X Factor" host Khloe Kardashian also tweeted his congratulations. "I'm excited for Kanye and my sister!" said Odom. "There's nothing like bringing life into this world! Let's keep God's blessings coming!" West, 35, was first to announce the news from the stage at a concert in Atlantic City on Sunday, singing, "God brought us a whole new plan, baby. 'Cause now you're having my baby." Kardashian, who rose to fame five years ago for her appearances in reality TV show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," was the most-searched person on the Yahoo! website in 2012. |
To ngwana.mobu & Msauza please take your conversation somewhere, why do you keep on going on in your, Sotho, Xhosa on nairaland? Either participate with others in a language everybody understands or join a South African blog or something. What you are doing is rude. |
What changed from elegant SA woman to aids statistics? My take is yes it is true that SA girls are elegant & classy but yes not all of them, as much as someone mentioned they don't travel, they are exposed to a lot of things which plays a role to the the way they act. It is sad that that the whole topic changed to their HIV status? With all the abortions going on in Nigeria, is it not possible that people are not infected by HIV? With a lot of the men traveling out of the country what are the possibilities? With so many brides getting married with their pregnancy showing, does it mean most people in the country are just faithful & their status is negative? What about Nigerian women who are prostitutes around the world or those in diaspora with their spouse back home are they faithful, thus making the population negative?I think Nigerians keep things under wraps & they have a culture of not speaking out. how many of you will visit a wellness centre, be at work, the mall wherever & just be tested? We all have good things & bad things & we can all learn from one another to become better, all I am saying it is not good to generalize, we hear a lot f bad things about Naija people but we don't assume they are all drug dealers, crooks. It is always said the woman are after money, material gain & trap guys to get married by getting pregnant, that they a bunch of educated people who can't do anything for themselves but if we all have to believe that it will be foolish & ignorance. |
