Most corps members do not know that they can actually make some money apart from the monthly allowance doing some businesses in their place of primary assignment. Below are the few examples of some businesses that you can start immediately at your place of Primary assignment. 1. EXPANDING ON YOUR SAED PROGRAM: By expanding on your SAED program, I mean that you can decide to work and improve yourself on the specific SAED program that you did during your service year, many corps members when they are given the NYSC books kit do not even open any of them till they finish and might not open it for the rest of their life. Do not be that corps member. I would want you to take out time and read the book entitled “STARTING MY OWN SMALL BUSINESS”. It is going to be of immense benefit in helping you to develop viable business ideas that can work in the area that you find yourself in. Since there are different things you can learn from the SAED program ; like shoe making, fashion design, cake making, and others, you can decide to establish that where you are after your service, just make sure you are doing something and not just relaxing, you can even go back home after service to your place and establish these things you have learnt using the money that you probably have saved up during your service, remember we talked about this earlier. 2. IMPORTATION: By importation here, I mean interstate importation where you bring goods that are not present in a particular place but from your analysis, you discover there is a serious need for such a product. Let’s say you are in Omuo community in Ekiti East LGA of Ekiti State, you will discover that they have a lot of yams but they don’t have fish, so if you are from the southern part of Nigeria, you can bring in fish from there and sell to them here and gain some profit and at the same time you can take yam to the southern part of the country and still sell and make a profit. In either case, it’s a win-win situation. I know some of you are already building the objection of I do not have money, well remember earlier we talked about savings. You need to make a firm decision to save money for your financial success. 3. RUNNING AN ALREADY EXISTING BUSINESS OR SKILL DURING YOUR SERVICE YEAR: I will use my example to help us understand this, before going for service I was a teacher who teaches English diction and English sounds. During service, because I read Computer Engineering, I was assigned to teach mathematics and I did not complain but I also taught that English diction unofficially even to kids around where I was staying and these got me a part-time job with a school. The pay was three times what I was earning where I was working full time after service. Some of you are skilled in sewing, how to make hair and a host of other skills. Let the people around you know about it and these can fetch you some good money. 4. BECOME AN NYSC APPROVED SAED INSTRUCTOR: For those of us who are very good at what we do like fashion design, graphic design, web design, shoemaking, hair making, and any other thing. Please as soon as you get to NYSC camp, look for the SAED director in camp and meet him or her to tell him or her what you do and show samples or pictures of it and tell him/her that you want to be part of the trainers during the SAED program they will be very happy to have you as a trainer but for you to make money you need to give your student massive value during the week that the training will be held, usually during the second and third week. This will make your students in camp hungry for more and they will contact you after service for more training and you will charge them for it because in-camp training is free but you pay for out-of-camp training. 5. TRADING ON PHONE AND PHONE ACCESSORIES: Depending on where you are serving you can decide to get a small shop and trade on phone and phone accessories like earpiece ear pod, memory card, chargers, flash drives, screen guard etc, especially if you have gotten any knowledge about phone repairs, you can even be an intermediary between a phone repairer and the owner if you know a good phone repairer. In places that you do not always have electric power, you can get a small generator and start a phone charging business. 6. POS BUSINESS: This is a very viable business if you happen to find yourself in the rural areas even in urban centres, but the only thing here is, you will need some funds at least a hundred thousand nairas to start the business. You can get POS machines from OPAY, 9PAYMENTBANK, PAY CENTER, KUDA, etc. But just check to see which works well in your area as some of their networks are not nationwide. You can also register with Access Bank, Zenith Bank and other banks as their agent and do transactions using their agents' mobile app. You will get a commission for it. In this business, you have to be able to keep track of all the little money that comes in and not spend them because they all add up to a big amount especially if you have a lot of customers. I hope this helps someone, you can drop any question you have lets see how to help one another. |
*You have to prepare your plan for service* It is said that; “he who fails to plan, automatically plans to fail”. The importance of planning cannot be over-emphasized because it will guide you in whatever you do, from the camp to your place of primary assignment, be it buying a meal to eat, a beer to drink, clothes, building a relationship you can name it. Planning even before you step your foot in camp will help you because most times in camp, people like to show off, even if you have money, it will not hurt if you plan yourself on how you are going to spend it. Sometimes, the food offered in camp might be nothing to write home about so you need to decide if you will either not eat the food totally or you will eat partly or like in my case you will eat everything given to you and keep the little money you have. The above suggestion of course will depend on your pocket. You can decide to eat just once from what NYSC will offer you or you decide not to take it at all. But let me warn you camp food is expensive and some might not be as palatable as you think. Most importantly, you need to prepare a plan for your savings; it would be proper to draw a plan of how much you will be saving from your allowance (allawee) every month and what you plan to use it for after service. That is why at the end of this book we will be brainstorming business ideas that will help you. Having at least two or three savings plans that you will implement based on how expensive things are in the community of your place of primary assignment could be beneficial. You can decide to save 30%, 40%, 50% of your allowance or even more depending on your circumstance but please make sure to put something aside every month as this is the only way you will build what you will go home with after service. I must tell you at this point that it will not be an easy ride but if you discipline yourself to do it consistently, you will be happy you did. Personally, the business I am currently running in Ekiti state as at the time of writing this book was started with the savings from my allawee during my service year. 3 |
One of the first thing you want to do before going for service is to prepare your mind, by preparing your mind, I mean you have to know that you will be moving to a place that is not your house and at such you will be faced with so much challenges. Determine before hand to face those challenges and overcome them. If you do. When that challenges eventually come you will be able to face it squarely because you have already prepared your mind for it. |
My name is Emmanuel Effiong and I finished serving in 2020 in ILASA Ekiti in Ekiti State. I was the president of the NEMA CDS group and we were the only CDS group in that region because the LGA was a bit big, so we were generally called ILASA corpers. After working with more than 20 corps members as their president in Ilasa Ekiti where I served, I came to discover that a lot of corps members do not have any Idea what they are expecting before going for service. This has made me take out the time to want to share with you what you should expect as you want to go for service and what business you can do to start making for yourself some good amount of money. Before going for service you need to prepare your mind to withstand whatever it is that you will face. I see lots of people always cry when they are sent to places that they did not expect, please if that happens to you, do not be downhearted just know that you have to make a difference. When I was in Ilasa, almost everyone in the community knew me because I started a business that was thriving there. So the place you are sent to might be a blessing in disguise. The first thing you want to do is ask yourself What is lacking in this place that I can help to bring the solution? This single question will make you to think. If you are about to go for service then you need guidance and that is why am here. If you are serving and have any questions too, you can drop them here or connect with me on my WhatsApp check my signature, you will see my contact there, send me a dm. Any questions dropped here will be answered as soon as possible. |
mrpoul:This is exactly what I was saying sometimes it's not because we are Nigerians or Africans it's just because that is the way it is. English Language is not our language and so we need to learn how to speak it well. It can make or Mar you when it comes to certain areas of Life and endeavour. |
It's not a matter of being proud of our accent or not it's a matter of speaking clearly so you can be understood by people. You would agree with me that there are places you would want to work, if you don't speak clear and expressive English no one may even look at you. For example there are some part of Nigeria that pronounce the letter R as L There are other part of Nigeria that pronounce N as L and vice versa. There are also those who have a very thick accent that has prevented them from even learning other language. Don't you think it would be nice if they learn to overcome the mothertongue interference? We are simply here to help sir. It's not a matter of being proud of our mothertongue or not. Even talking about the IELT and TOFEL you would agree with me that you must pass those test before you are given access to those countries, so please let's try and improve ourselves. |
Have you ever wanted to speak clearly and have a British or American accent, if yes then you need to understand that it will take you time to learn. I will share alot of tips that can help you on this thread that I am starting, I will also attempt to get you to watch how I do this practically on my YouTube channel. Now let's get started. If you want to improve your speech or speak like a native one of the things you can do immediately is to 1. Start listening to foreign speakers in the accent you want to have. What I mean here is that if you want to gain a British accent you need to Listen to a British speaker and continue listening to British speakers for at least two month. When you want to speak you try to imitate them. 2. Expand your Knowlege of sound and it's production. You can decide to expand your knowledge of English sounds and how to pronounce certain letter combination. Understanding these can be very difficult but I have put a training together on YouTube that you can watch free of charge, I am taking it but by bit so you can digest it. You can check it out. 3.Expand your vocabulary. A great bank of vocabulary will really help you to be fluent when you are speaking. So take some time to learn vocabularies. On my Whatsapp status I share a word of the day everyday from 8- 10 am so you can save my number which will be in the signature section so you can join us to expand your vocabulary. 4.Understand what stress patterns rhythm and Intonation is all about. I will be talking about all these in these thread, so please if you are really interested to learn English and speak like a native bookmark this. See you in the next thread. |
Hello my name is Emmanuel Effiong, currently am in Ekiti state where I was serving in a village called Ilasa Ekiti. I just finished my service last October. You only need to know the strategies 1.One of the ways that made me so much money during the pandemic was teaching oyibo people how to speak English. Now one will say how do you get them what strategies can we use to get them. The strategy is very simple.(If you are interested you can join my making money with English language class hit me up on whatsapp). 2.Voice overs: Do you know that there are companies who are ready to pay you to do voice over for them? I made up to 150 dollars here in just over 3 month, because I was not really serious with it. This works especially if you have a good voice. And can use good diction in your speech. 3. Another ley way I made money was through the use of ESL tutor site. In fact if you have a good command of English and good diction you have a very high chance of being hired and the pay from 2$ up for every 30 minutes that you teach a student. I loved those plateforms a lot because I could sit in my house and make cool money imagine bringing out 5 hours for teaching and you make 20 dollars that's about 9k. You need a good command of Diction to do this. (If you are interested You can join my making money with English class). 4. Audio book reading: There are so many books that needs to be converted to Audio books and these book owners need people who are ready to do this for them and they can either pay you in royalty as the book sells or pay you off one time. My name is Emmanuel and I am a graduate of computer Engineering. I just finished my service and am still currently in ILASA where I sell phone accessories and do some trainings on Importation online. During my service I discover that if If I can buy things at a cheap price I can make some good profit selling them here. So I made research on what will appeal to the youth of this community and even the adult. I discovered a lot of things I can sell that can fetch me some money but I did not have the money because I could not really save well you know I love flexing and enjoying myself so I left it. By the time I was two weeks to the end of my service we were paid double so I had some good money to enjoy myself. It was then I remembered that I will not be receiving any money again from anybody. By this time the money was just remaining 35k. I had to go back to my friend who told me about mini Importation. I became serious with my research, and I discovered the area of phone assesories. I had to pay 10k for the training and then with 25k I ordered a few product. To cut the story short it took 3 weeks for the product to get to Nigeria and boom I started selling to some guys in the street because I had already developed a relationship with them. After that first sale I made 45k and I was like wow, is this real From then I increased my orders and my advertisement. I begin to associate more with the youth because I want to sell and today I sell like pure water because I have been known. Why am I telling you this, you can do anything and anything can make you to make money, the only thing you need is consistency and PERSISTENCE. You must commit to the grind.
