AFTER undergoing a grilling session, which lasted more than one hour at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday, President Goodluck Jonathan expressed optimism about his chances of clinching the party’s ticket, just as he expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the PDP primaries which have been held so far. His main challenger in the presidential race, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was also at the PDP secretariat for the screening exercise, although he had to move speedily from the Legacy House of the PDP, where he initially went for the screening, owing to communication gap between him and the secretariat. Jonathan had stormed the PDP secretariat at about 12.40 p.m. for the screening and was accompanied by PDP bigwigs, including his main campaign manager, Dr Dalhatu Tafida; Liyel Imoke; Timipre Sylva; Sule Lamido; Godswill Akpabio; Gbenga Daniel; Anyim Pius Anyim and Professor Jerry Gana. On alighting at the PDP secretariat, he was ushered into the PDP Conference Hall, where the screening took place. The president, after the screening, affirmed that he was grilled by the panellists, headed by Alhaji Aminu Wali, describing the exercise as rigorous. Speaking with newsmen on the just concluded National Assembly primary of the party, President Jonathan assured disaffected members of the party that PDP would look into all complaints that trailed the primary with a view to addressing them in order to allow justice to prevail. He said the disaffection that the National Assembly primary had generated across the states was expected, given the size of the PDP and the huge challenges it faced in conducting primaries to pick state and National Assembly candidates, as well as gubernatorial and presidential candidates. Former Vice-Presidsent Abubakar had arrived at the PDP headquarters not more than 30 minutes after the president’s depature and was led to the waiting room of the national chairman, where he sat with his supporters, including Professor Charles Soludo, Chief Oyewole Fashawe, Dubem Onyia, Titi Ajanaku, Dr Ben Obi, Chief Ken Nnamani and others. He was ushered into the conference hall after he had waited for close to 40 minutes, just as his screening took almost an hour. Abubakar, while speaking with the media, confirmed that the screening process was gruelling, especially for him, adding that the panellists took him to task on his “critical comments” against the PDP. He also told newsmen that the screening panel grilled him on issues about his return to the party and other sundry issues relating to his desire to run for the presidency. When asked about his next possible line of action should he be disqualified as a presidential aspirant by the PDP, Abubakar interjected immediately, saying that the screening panel had no power to disqualify him. “They cannot disqualify me. They don’t have the power to disqualify me because they are not a panel of inquiry, they are not a court,” he said. Earlier, the only female presidential aspirant in the PDP, Dr Sarah Jibril, had taken turn to complete her screening, as she expressed satisfaction with the exercise. Jibril expressed hope that the screening would produce a credible presidential candidate, who, she said, would eventually emerge as the next president of Nigeria. However, one of the aspirants, Alhaji Sani Aminu Dutsinma, added a twist to the screening exercise when he withdrew his participation through a letter he filed before the PDP national chairman, Dr Okwe-silieze Nwodo, citing unresolved issue of zoning and a pending litigation against 2011 elections as reason. He said the only condition for him to participate in the screening exercise and the national convention of the party was for the party to drop President Jonathan, who he accused of usurping the chances of the North on the issue of zoning. In the letter of withdrawal from the screening, dated January 11, 2011, Dutsinma said the national chairman was aware of the pending litigation with suit number FH/C/ABJ/CS/03/2011 in a Federal High Court, seeking an order of mandamus for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to perform its statutory and legal duties and also a request to restrain the PDP from all preparations on the conduct ofy the presidential primary. Jonathan, Atiku lobby delegates Hours after the National Assembly and gubernatorial candidates emerged from the just-concluded primaries of the PDP, indications are rife that both President Jonathan and his rival, Alhaji Abubakar, have started scrambling for the attention of delegates to the presidential primary. The PDP had constituted a 36-member special national convention planning committee with some state governors, including Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala; Alhaji Danjuma Goje; Theodore Orji; Alhaji Sule Lamido, some senators and members of House of Representatives as members However, the presidency, Nigerian Tribune learnt, had sent emissaries to members of the party who would vote during the national convention scheduled for tomorrow. Those detailed to make contact with the delegates, findings revealed, included the leadership of the National Assembly and key members who had been pro-Jonathan, as well as political leaders from across the stataes of the federation. The PDP, as of the weekend, was yet to give detailed information on the number of delegates that would make the convention, just as the perceived omission by the party continued to generate controversy within its rank and file of the PDP. In the same vein, Abubakar was said to have commenced an underground move aimed at brightening his chances in the scheduled presidential primary, amid reports that he had been spreading his network among members of the party who emerged as candidates after the primaries conducted across the states. Abubakar, from findings, had been in touch with many of the senatorial and House of Representatives candidates of the PDP on how to secure their support for his ambition to clinch the presidential ticket of the party tomorrow. While still awaiting the comprehensive list of delegates to the national convention, Abubakar’s henchmen were said to have worked out arithmetic on about 5,000 delegates, with the intention to get in touch with more of the special delegates, the list of which the PDP would soon make open. Abubakar, on Sunday, had called on the PDP not to toy with reports of irregularities filed before it on the primaries it had conducted so far. Abubakar said his warning became necessary in view of imminent mass exodus of aggrieved PDP members from the party due to the just-concluded primaries in states of the federation. Abubakar made the plea in a press statement issued by his campaign organi-sation, adding that it would be in the interest of the party to address the complaint by party members accordingly. Eagle Square closed to traffic As part of the security measures for the successful hosting of the presidential primary, all the roads leading to the Eagle Square, the venue of the national convention, will be closed to traffic from 5.00 p.m today. An impeccable security source told the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday said all roads would remain closed until after the national convention. The sources said in addition, vehicles would not be allowed into the venue of the convention and about 200 metres away to the venue, except those of certain personalities. According to the source, buying and selling of goods in whatever form would also not be allowed in about 300 metres away to the venue, while no form of procession or rally in support of any of the aspirants would be tolerated. “To say the least, the venue of the convention, I mean the Eagle Square, is now a security zone. We are not taking chances, we don’t want a repeat of what happened on October 1. All the vehicles parked around the Eagle Square have been removed,” the source told the Nigerian Tribune. The source further hinted that a special security tag had been designed for the officials, delegates, security personnel and the press, among others, with which they would be allowed into the venue, saying that “there will be no loitering.” According to the source, more security personnel, including the officers and men of the Nigeria Police, the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), had been moved to Abuja from the neighbouring states, while the military had also been placed on standby. At the press time, some unmarked vehicles loaded with operatives of the SSS were seen parading the streets of Abuja, while men of the anti-terrorism of the Nigeria Police were seen stationed at strategic places with armoured personnel carriers (APCs). Nigerian Tribune, however, learnt that a special security squad saddled with the responsibility of keeping watch over the activities of the politicians had been put in place. NSCDC deploys sniffer dogs, 10,000 personnel In another development, NSCDC, on Tuesday, said 10,000 of its personnel would be deployed today across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs, in order to ensure smooth conduct of the PDP presidential primary. Commandant-General of the corps, Dr Ade Abolurin, while speaking at the passing-out parade of some of the NSCDC personnel and dogs from the NSCDC Academy, Abuja, said all those with evil mind should stay away. Besides, Dr Abolurin said the dogs were also given extensive training in the area of crowd control, adding that a few of the dogs were engaged in a mock crowd control at the academy, during the parade, to demonstrate the readiness of the corps. IBB to attend primary Meanwhile, former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, will attend the presidential primary tomorrow. Babangida was, on Tuesday, elected by the Chanchaga Local Government (Niger State) branch of the party as a national delegate and had assured the chapter that he would be at the convention. A statement by the secretary of the party in the council, Alhaji Usman Mohammed, which was made available to the press, said Babangida was picked as a national delegate because of his commitment to the party and believe in the survival of democracy. In the meantime, Alhaji Abubakar, on Tuesday, described Babangida as the “new Sardauna of the North,” going by his ability to forge new unity among all the states in the North. Abubakar said this when he paid a visit to the Niger State governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, at the Government House, Minna. He described Baban-gida as “a leader of leaders, who has filled the vacuum created by the death of Ahmadu Bello 40 years ago.” Abubakar praised legislators in Niger State for joining other progressives elements in the country to ‘Kill the third term monster in 2006’ adding that “similar monster still abounds and should be killed.” Governor Aliyu, who was represented by his deputy, Ahmed Musa Ibeto, told the visitor that “we in Niger State have elders and we listen to our elders.” |
