Tragedy again struck at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano, yesterday as a Nigerian Air Force fighter jet crash-landed at the airport, killing the pilot, Group Captain Saleh Abubakar. The ill-fated jet had taken off from nearby 303 Nigeria Air force Flying School, Kano, situated a few kilometres from the airport only to crash-land soon after at about 12:48 pm. Already, the remains of the deceased, who hails from Adamawa State, had been deposited at the nearby Armed Forces Specialists Hospital, Kano while the debris of the plane had beeng cleared by the military and NEMA officials. The accident, like the fire accident that occurred at the airport, last week, threw the airport staffers into mourning. The ill-fated jet, according to eyewitnesses, burst into flame as soon as it hit the runaway of the airport. The deceased, who was a flying instructor at the 303 Flying School, Kano, died in the course of the training of his student pilots. The jet was said to be one of the new ones delivered to the school last week. It was alleged to have been bought from China. “The student pilots initially went through the theoretical aspect of the training and later flew with their instructor on the same plane. When they came back, the instructor went on a solo demonstration, after which the student pilots would have done their own solo flight. It was in the course of this flight that the accident occurred,” the source said. At press time, security officials from the Nigerian Air Force have cordoned off the particular spot of the tragedy, even as military authorities have commenced full investigation into the crash. Interestingly, the tragedy occurred a few minutes after the Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Fidelia Akubueze Njeze and other top officials of the nation’s aviation industry departed the same airport, through the same runway. These officials were in Kano State ahead of the planned commissioning of some of the structures at MAKIA as well as to commiserate with the airport over the fire incident, which killed a Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria official, Alhaji Zubairu. Meanwhile, hundreds of passengers, who were to depart the state through MAKIA, and from other airports to Kano have their travel arrangement temporarily suspended as the military investigators were still at the runway as at 3.30 pm when the Daily Sun visited the scene. Aero, Arik, IRS and a few other airlines billed to take off between 3:30pm and 5pm could not keep their schedules as a result of the crash. The Manager of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, Alhaji Ali Nok declined comment over the tragedy, saying it was purely a military affair while the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Air Force in the state, Flight Lieutenant Obi Obasi said a press release would be issued from the headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force in Abuja on the incident, when the Daily Sun called him on phone. In a statement signed by Air Commodore Yusuf Anas, the Air Force said the F7 fighter aircraft based in Makurdi recently relocated to Kano on a two-week flying training exercise before returning to Makurdi. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal MD Umar has already sent a delegation of senior Nigerian Air Force officers to commiserate with the victim’s family, the statement said. |

t my zonal presidential campaign rally in Ibadan, Oyo State, last Tuesday, I spoke about the place of the South- West in the Nigerian federation. Without mincing words, I spoke about the level of education and sophistication in the region. In my opinion - and in the opinion of many informed Nigerians - the South-West is of critical significance to the economic and political advancement of the country. The progress of the zone is the progress of Nigeria. It makes perfect sense that such a critical segment of Nigeria is governed by those who have what it takes! These were my exact words as accurately captured by the Nigerian Tribune of Wednesday, February 9, 2011: "The entire South-West is too important, too sophisticated and too educated to be in the hands of rascals." I had referred here to the fact that unreliable or mischievous behaviours or notions ought not to be acceptable in any part of our body politic especially not in the South-West where the population has had the privilege of a head start in education compared to other parts of the country. It is unhelpful to public discourse if we constantly twist words beyond intended meaning. Surely, even the most zealous detractor of the interest of the South West would not desire that anyone would wish upon such a sophisticated part of our country, the activity of unreliable or mischievous intentions. In other words, I had indicated that abhorrence for such behaviour should be our proclivity, especially considering the disposition of the people of the Western States to governance standards. But by laying so much emphasis on the latter part of the sentence we dither profoundly on nuances, and this typifies the general tendency to dwell on the negative which we must, as a country, refrain from. My qualification of the West as highly educated and sophisticated was easily dispensed with, while the fact that we should not expose such civilized and educated populace to rascality was played more upon, with emphasis on the rascality. But we easily forget, perhaps because we have neglected for far too long the important role that our educational institutions play in development, that the foundations of our independence movement burgeoned its fruits from the discussions which emanated from the sophisticated “ Ibadan School of thought” as the liberal Arts faculties of the then University College Ibadanwas then known. However, as true leadership requires, I take responsibility for any misunderstanding of the context in which my statement was made. In a time of active politicking, when scoring political points have taken precedence over our overarching goal of nation building, we must not allow those strong bonds which tie us together as a nation, and which brought our people to the streets, for the common cause of seeing that the right thing is done by all and for all the people of our country - an ideal which the western part of Nigeria has always been in the fore-front of aspiring for - to be dispensed with by the mere nuance which we attach to words. The Western part of Nigeria by my estimation remains a very sophisticated and educated part of our dear country as sophisticated as the cultures in all other parts of our country and unique in its unequivocal stand for justice and equity. Therefore,as Architect Sambo and I move around the country seeking the mandate of our dear countrymen and women, we shall continue to respect and pay tribute to the hard work and patience of all our people. Our promise of a significant turnaround in the way our country operates and is governed is an article of faith. I made a commitment to Nigerians that our campaign will be about issues and livelihood advancement. I am determined to remain true to this commitment. In this regard, we made the promise and will zealously deliver on, amongst other things, a stable, constant supply of electricity which will revolutionise the way business is done in our country. We will pay special attention to the security of lives and property; we will focus on access to good quality health andeducation for all Nigerians and job creation for our youths, for this is the only way we can defeat poverty. We are focused on delivering on our commitment to agricultural and infrastructural development, the expansion of our economy and the complete transformation of our national security architecture in other to better secure lives and property in our Country. Let us all insist in building a united nation where justice, equityand the fundamental essence of freedom and democracy is sustained. GEJ facebook page |
Stampede in Ibadan Parents storm schools, withdraw pupils It ’s blackmail - Oyo Govt From YINKA FABOWALE and GBENGA ADESUYI, Ibadan Friday, February 11, 2011 There was pandemonium in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital as thousands of panic- stricken parents besieged public schools in the metropolis to withdraw their children, following rumours that some pupils died after eating meal allegedly poisoned but provided free by the Adebayo Alao-Akala government. The poison scare was coming even as the rumour mills went abuzz that Governor Alao- Akala planned to use 200 people for fetish rituals to realize his second term ambition But the state government and the governor ’s campaign organization, swiftly dismissed the reports, describing them as wicked lies and blackmail. Governor Alao-Akala ’s Special Adviser on Communication, Dotun Oyelade, in a reaction, said the development was an attempt by political opponents to blackmail his principal as his administration does not run a free meal programme in schools. He assured state residents of their safety. Many public schools in the city had become empty by 100pm, after news made the round that some officials and politicians seeking elective offices in the state were distributing free food packs from government round the schools in the metropolis, of which some school children had died after eating thereof. The food poison scare which hit the city about noon spread like wild fire, as anonymous callers made calls to parents and teachers in schools, warning them not to accept or allow their wards to partake of the meal. Parents, including civil servants, market women and housewives stormed primary and secondary schools to withdraw their children and wards, on receiving the alarming messages. But most school premises were scenes of chaos as hot arguments ensued between them and school authorities following the latter ’s attempt to prevent the parents, who headed for the classrooms to pick the pupils. Hundreds of parents were sighted at Mokola,, Oniyanrin, Odo Iye, Oke Are, Opo Yeosa, Oje and other parts of Ibadan rushing to schools in the areas ostensibly to beat the arrival of the food distributors. Similar situation played out in areas such as Oke Ado, Liberty road, NTC area, Molete, Sango, Ojoo, Mokola, Agodi gate,Old Ife road,Alakia,Challenge,Muslim/ Odinjo area,Bodija,Basorun. Some head teachers had to resorte to locking school gates, but this provoked serious protests and agitation by the teeming parents, some of who threatened to break the gates. Some even assaulted teachers. The development caused security to be quickly beefed up with armed policemen stationed at strategic locations including Oniyanrin area to forestall break down of law and order. Some of the parents vowed not to allow them back to school until the state government could publicly assure their safety. A nursing mother met at St. Stephens Primary school,Oniyanrin, however told Daikly Sun that she had to go to the school and pick her seven year old daughter when she heard the rumours, declaring ” You don’t take risks with politicians. I heard some pupils ate akara(baked beans) and died. They even said some disappeared after eating. So I had to rush here and pick my daughter. ” Investigations at Adeoyo General Hospital, the University College Hospital (UCH) and some private hospitals located around Yemetu and Mokola areas of Ibadan , where some of the victims of the poisonous meal were said to have been taken, did not, however, reveal any reported case. Teachers declined comments on the development, but some at C and S New Eden Primary School Mokola were overheard saying they rexceived phone calls warning them not to receive the toxic food package from the Akala men. But, Oyelade, assured residents of the state of their safety, describing the whole development as blackmail. |

I believe most of our leaders are illiterate despite their level of education. I dont think you need any technical detail b4 you know how to figure out things like this. At the collation center you can easily detect double registration even two people with the same name. Except if INEC intentionally want to frustrate their own effort, this coming election will surely be fruitful. |
