imhotep: The house of representatives has raised the alarm over the reported criminal activities perpetrated by insurgents in some communities in Oyo state.
At plenary on Tuesday, the lawmakers said some violent groups — “sometimes consisting of insurgents and foreigners from neighbouring countries” — have been camping in over 200 villages in the state for about three weeks.
They said while some of the insurgents rob and kidnap people for ransom, some of their counterparts “storm villages to maim, loot and even kill in search of food, money and shelter”.
The deliberations were sequel to a motion of urgent public importance raised by Bosun Oladele, from Oyo state.
Oladele said villagers and farmers living in the affected villages have fled the area and taken cover in neighbouring communities.
He said eight persons have died from the attacks while “more than 15 persons have been kidnapped for ransom, some resulting in fatalities and gunshot injuries”.
He also said there is need for “drastic” measures to be taken to avoid a situation where “economic and social activities within the constituency will be paralysed”.
Contributing to the motion, the lawmakers lamented similar security challenges in other parts of the country, while calling for the expansion of security personnel in the country.
However, Henry Nwawuba from Imo state said the problem may not be employing more security personnel, rather, “are those in the armed forces the right persons for the job?”
He said: “We are talking about the armed forces being overstretched; those in the armed forces, are they there because they have the passion for the job or because of the money? When you employ somebody in the force that is there only to make money, then you see killings and collusion.”
He said the solution is the restructuring of the nation’s security architecture, adding: “Let us consider going back to our constitutional review to look at the issue of state police, to address these killings once and for all.”
Sulaiman Romo from Kano state accused some of the lawmakers of “trivialising” the matter.
“My worry is that we may be trivialising a very important matter of this nature and if we are going to judge our country and government on the bases of sectoral crises, then all the governments since independence have failed,” he said.
“Whenever we have an issue to discuss, let us address the substance instead of castigating the government and individuals.
“We should look at the possibility of increasing the capacity and number of the officers of the Nigerian police. There are so many issues across the country and this is not limited to 2019.”
Thereafter, the house urged the chief of army staff and the inspector-general of police to “urgently” deploy personnel in the area.
They also mandated the relevant government agencies to provide relief materials to the victims of the crisis.

Culture › Re: Isi Agu - An Igbo Identity by LZAA: 3:28pm On Mar 27, 2018 |
soloxxng: Is isi-agụ the right name for this cloth material that is associated with the Igbos?
Yes, isi-agụ is its correct name but what is on the cloth is isi ọdụm (lion's head), not isi agụ (leopard's head)
Does that nullify the name? No.
Is it the first time a wrong name has been given to something in Igbo, English, Latin, etc? No.
The people who named this cloth mistakenly called it isi-agụ. But that wrong name has become its name. It can't be changed soon. It does not even matter anymore.
It is that mistake that contributed to the confusion many Igbos who are under 50 have over which animal is agụ and which one is ọdụm.
Ọdụm is lion.
Agụ is leopard.
That is why we say: Ọdụm na-egbu agụ (the lion that kills the leopard). That is why God is called Ọdụm nke ebo Juda (the Lion of the tribe of Juda).
Tiger never existed in Africa and was never seen or known by our forefathers. So they had no name for it. But in modern times, some people also call the tiger agụ. However, I have suggested that it be called agụ-ukwu (the big leopard), because it is the biggest of the big cats, while cheetah should be called agụ-ọsọ (the speed leopard), because it is the fastest land animal.
So should isi-agụ be changed to isi- ọdụm? It is not necessary. Languages don't develop like that.
Similar mistakes had been made in Igbo before. Some months ago, I asked people on Facebook what is the Igbo name for library, since school is already called ụlọ akwụkwọ (book house), and what is the Igbo name for pharmacy, since hospital is already called ụlọ ọgwụ (drug house). It caused a lot of confusion and introspection.
School has been "erroneously" named ụlọ akwụkwọ. It can't be changed anymore. Library will have to get a different name. Same goes for pharmacy.
In English, similar mistakes have been made countless times. When the world erroneously thought the earth was flat, they coined the words "sunrise" and "sunset", believing that the sun rose from the east and set in the west. Centuries ago it was discovered and certified that the sun never rises and never sets. Rather the earth rotates round the sun. Centuries after, the words sunset and sunrise have not been abolished in English. We use it everyday even though we know sunset and sunrise are scientifically wrong and non-existent.
Similarly, the months September means 7th month (ie septuagenarian); October means 8th month (ie octagon, octogenarian); November means 9th month (ie nonagon, nonagenarian); December means 10th month (ie decimal, decade, decimetre). But in reality they are 9th, 10, 11th, 12th month respectively in the Gregorian calendar we use today. This is because the old calender did not capture 2 months. The current calendar captured them, gave them names and adjusted the months by 2 months, causing the mix-up we have today. But nobody bothers to change the names of the months to reflect their true meanings.
Again when Christopher Columbus set out for India through a different route, he landed in North America. Thinking it was another part of India, he called the indigenous people he saw there Red Indians. West Indies also got its name via that mistake. These names have stuck till today even though North America has no connection with India.
So isi-agụ was mistakenly named by those who didn't know the difference between agụ (leopard) and ọdụm (lion). But that name has stuck. It can't be changed now. Isi-agụ is its name.
Interestingly, some isi-agụ materials bear no animal pictures (as can be seen in some of the attached pictures), but are still called isi-agụ. Some even have the pictures of other animals but are still called isi-agụ. So it is no longer the picture drawn on this material that makes people call it isi-agụ. It is the material and what it represents. It is the cloth material that points to the Igbos as a people. The Igbos have adopted it as the cloth that gives them their identity. So isi-agụ is it!
If you don't have your isi-agụ, nwanne, ndo.

Angelanest: The Anambra State Governor, His Excellency Dr. Willie M. Obiano has made history by appointing into office Bonaventure Enemali the first honorable commissioner of Igala origin and extraction. 33-year-old Hon. Bonaventure Enemali, the second youngest in the cabinet of the Youth and Sports ministry is from the Igala speaking denomination in Anambra East Local Government Area.
The newly appointed Exco Members were earlier today inaugurated at the Exco Chamber by Governor Willie Obiano at the Government House, Awka followed immediately by the first Exco Meeting.
The business of the day started with the governor honouring outgoing exco members who served with him in his first tenure by publicly appreciating them and encouraging them with medals of honour.
The newly confirmed members were later inaugurated starting with the commissioners and then the Special Advisers.
From the 19 Commissioners inaugurated today, 8 made it from the first tenure of Governor Willie Obiano.

Nairaland General › Re: Residents Flee As Monkeys Invade Lagos Community by LZAA: 5:13pm On Mar 26, 2018 |
nairavsdollars: Invasion by monkeys from natural habitat is forcing many residents of Soluyi/Sosanya Community in Gbagada, Lagos State, to flee. Some of the residents told the News men in Lagos on Monday that they could no longer withstand the situation.
They called on the state government to save the community from the trouble, saying that the animals forced their ways into their rooms, destroying window and door nets, food stuffs and other items.
The Chairman of the community’s Landlord Association, Mr Adigun Olaleye, said that it had become difficult for the community to curtail the monkeys and their destructive attitude.
He said that the invasion might have resulted from the nearness of the community to a swamp forest that separated the community from Ifako area.
According to him, the monkeys come into residences at any time including early morning and gain entrance into rooms even if the houses are locked.
Olalaye told the News men that the community had written a letter to the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture as regards the situation but had yet to get a relief.
“They said we would have to pay for them to come and pack the monkeys,” he said. He said that the invasion had been on for years but recently became unbearable.
Olaleye appealed to the state government to urgently intervene.
Narrating her ordeal, a journalist who lives in the community, Mrs Funmilola Gboteku, told the News men that the monkeys had forced her family to flee.
“Many times, these monkeys come to the neighbourhood to destroy our property. Once they see food items inside a house, they direct all their energies at gaining entrance forcefully.
“The monkeys are in the habit of tearing the protective nets on windows to gain entrance and eat whatever they find in the house.“I have had to replace the protective nets several times; I am tired of doing it.
“I have been locking my windows but locking of windows has disadvantages; there is no cross ventilation in the house, and as a result, we suffer heat,’’ she told the News men.
Another landlord, Mr Oluwatosin Aregbesola, told the News men that his tenants were no longer feeling safe in the house because of the monkeys.
“The monkeys enter kitchens to eat our soups and any food stuff on the shelf.
“The day I tried to catch one of them, the monkey attacked me by using its long nails to punch a hole on my neck and scratch my face,” he said. Aregbesola appealed to the state government to save the community from the menace.
