What I would advise to move to the active side is to try to switch internally within your organization. You must try to prove to the managers that you can take on that responsibility. You can learn with the guys in the active side when they troubleshoot issues and also learn on your own.

I did something similar too. Mine was in semi-passive but I wanted to do core network engineering so I changed organizations to achieve that but I had to do lots of study and labbing using emulators to understand concepts. You can start with Net+ or Jeremy IT CCNA course on youtube. It might be boring when you don't work with the things you study but that's why you have the emulators. They help you feel like you are in the real appliance.

Although, if you have the funds too, you can do a masters too and I am very sure you will use these emulators during your studies and maybe you'd have a little edge.

Lol, many people are in network engineering. I don't know your condition but many people I know started without any certifications but their regular Bsc. For entry level, what is required is that you know the basics which can be learnt from watching YT videos or some certification courses which are free . You don't need to take any certification yet.

Could clarify what you mean by passive telecom?

Passive telecom handles the non-signal generating equipment at a bts.

For traditional network Engineering, there are emulators like GNS3, Pnetlab, Eve-NG that can be use to virtualize hardware like switches, routers, firewalls, monitoring tools, windows, linux endpoints and many more hardware appliances..

The only requirement is that you have a very powerful laptop or workstation. Depending on your lab and topology, you might need anywhere from 16 - 128GB RAM with atleast 8 CPU cores...You can research more on this.

Wow - that's quite a massive requirement in addition to the expensive certifications that's mandatory for one to get a job and grow in the field. I guess that's why there're very few people venturing into it. I currently work in the passive telecom but it's not something I enjoy and I'm looking towards switching to the active part but I don't know how to do that easily. My plan is to go for an MSc in network engineering to give me an edge. Anyone willing to provide counsel on how I can make the switch without going through the long education route?

Wicked! My Vilros power brick died on me. I have an OEM RPi power brick but that means one of my RPi is always down. I'm sure excited to see another hobbyist. I'm leaving RPis sha. Getting too expensive for what they deliver now. Used Thinkcentres cost almost the same and deliver more computing power.

Cost of hardware made me quit continuing the journey into network engineering. I'm willing to continue learning if there's a means to virtualize learning completely, while still being able to achieve real world use - and not just some projects using virtual tools that will only live inside my pc due to my inability to afford hardware for realworld practicing.

Some explanation of the VoIP lingo so “lay people” can understand:

DID: Direct Inward Dial. Also called DDI-Direct Dial-In. Both refer to the same thing. The choice (used to) depend on region. Americans call it DID, most of the rest of the world calls it DDI. It’s essentially a phone number. Think of it as equivalent to your GSM number. Any call to that number will ring your VoIP phone

SIP Trunk: this is the “connection” that ensures that calls to your DID are routed to your VoIP infrastructure. It is provided by companies authorised by NCC to provide “SIP Trunking” services. In Nigeria Airtel and to some extent MTN are major telcos that provide it. There are several other smaller telcos that play in the space. I will give an honourable mention to RapidBTS as one of their employees (Holla Adamu) offered me a SIP trunk and DID when I started out 4 years ago.

Zigbee: This is not VoIP but is something that may also need explanation. So the poster is looking to do some Home Automation (those who follow this thread from the beginning know that I’m interested in it). So one way to connect “smart home devices” (think of smart light switches) is over WiFi. But this can be a challenge as many home automation devices can overwhelm your WiFi. Zigbee is a “way” to connect your smart devices to your home network using an “alternative” to WiFi. I don’t fully understand it (yet) as my “play” in home automation so far has been using Tapoo smart plugs. But more robust home automation projects use Zigbee (or an alternate protocol called Zwave). So think of Zigbee as a means to connect your smart devices to your home network. In the poster’s setup, dialing extension 9999 on his PBX (he is using a software called Freeswitch to run his PBX, most of my post has been around Asterisk, a different but similar PBX software) will give access to his Zigbee controller were he can issue commands by pressing buttons on his phone. The buttons issue a “tone” called DTMF which provide instruction to the Zigbee controller on what to do

I understand where you’re coming from because I have been working from home for the past 4 years too. It can get very boring. I’m married and my wife goes to work. I have a car but hardly drives it unless I want to go buy something. Now, I’m considering renting an office space just to go out of the house daily. I have someone working for me remotely but I’m considering hiring someone to work in-office. I know all these will be more expenses but I will do them just to go out daily.

I will also suggest that freelancers and people that work from home should have like a Facebook or WhatsApp group to chitchat and make friends. That will also help. If you’re in PH we can be friends.

You can get items on telegram that you can't easily get via google. TG is more than just a chat app. Just that its not popular here. You can host a recorded group voice chat. Do live video streams, upload unlimited number of files for personal storage, Make video and voice calls, download music, anime, movies etc, retrieve first messages in a group no matter what time you join the group etc etc

I've been tempted , I've seen nudity ( nude videos and pictures) sent to my inbox by different ladies during my time on social media , but God has helped me overcome.

I've never taken drugs nor visited the hospital since I gave my life to Christ except from when I disobeyed the Holy Spirit.

I've lived most of my Christian life in isolation and separation having the Holy Spirit as my only friend. The grace of God has been so overwhelming in my life. I've waited upon God for 8 years on a stretch, yet was stronger than people who eat 3 square meal. After 8 years the Holy Spirit told me to stop. I rested for a year and 9 months and the Spirit bade me resume again. September 30 would make it 4 years, if the Spirit still chooses to keep me here , yet I've never given up cos the grace of God has been my strength in weakness.

I've read the scriptures more than 150 times from genesis to revelation, yet the Spirit says it isn't enough and keeps helping me study more.
I've seen people close to me die yet I couldn't do anything about it and had to let God's will prevail.

On the 17 October 2019 , I went into the bathroom and the Spirit told me my dad was going to die, I refused to accept it , but on the 20th October same year, in the morning I heard a song in the dream ( ndi mozi by Judy Kay) woke up only to hear my dad gave up the ghost. I was alerted , got there laid my hands upon him and commanded his spirit to return, but the Holy Spirit told me to stop wasting time that he's been taken. I wept for 2 weeks but that was the last I saw my beloved dad, whom I hoped was going to be alive to see me fulfill my ministry.

In all I've been through as a Christian , I've been more than conquerors by the mighty hand of God upon my life.

I don't know what you're going through as you read this but I want you to know that all things are going to work out for your good.
This race isn't a competition, your timetable is different from that of others , just allow Jesus take the wheel and see Him manifest His mighty works in your life.
Never give up for any reason, for he that endures to the end shall be saved. Keep on hoping against hope like Abraham did and God would surely come through at His own appointed time, for He makes all things beautiful in His own time.
