Top Yoruba monarch, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has passed on, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

Alaafin Adeyemi, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, died in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State in South-West Nigeria.

The remains of the top Yoruba traditional ruler were brought to Oyo town, 62 kilometres from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in the early hours of Saturday and traditional rites began, palace sources told this newspaper.

He was 83 years old and the longest reigning Alaafin ever, having ruled for 52 years.

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is expected to make an official announcement upon receiving the report of the monarch’s passing from the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, who will now lead Oyo town before a new Alaafin is installed.

The monarch had been sick and a plan had been made to fly him abroad before he passed on late Friday night.

A source familiar with the medical travel plan said his tickets and those of a few wives were already procured.

His death came months after the two other senior Oyo State monarchs – the Olubadan of Ibadan, Saliu Adetunji, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Jimoh Oyewumi – died. All happened in less than five months.

A new Olubadan has been installed but the Soun throne remains vacant.

Alaafin Adeyemi was born Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi on October 15, 1938 into the Alowolodu Royal House of the famous Oyo town.

He was crowned on November 18, 1970, succeeding Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I. He was known popularly as Iku Baba Yeye.

While he reigned, he was the permanent chairperson of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

With the demise of Alaafin Adeyemi, it is now the turn of the Agunloye Ruling House to produce the next Oyo monarch. Mr Adeyemi’s predecessor, Alaafin Ladigbolu, was from the Agunloye House.

The cabal around President Muhammadu Buhari has been thrown into a dilemma on pushing forward a successor to the outgoing president after ruling out a number of powerful individuals in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC including some within the government.

While the cabal is said to know those in their permutation who will not succeed Buhari, they are according to multiple sources confused over who will.

That confusion in finding an amenable Southern presidential material, according to multiple sources, was at the weekend giving life to the once unfathomable prospects of the dutiful minister of state, petroleum, Timipire Sylva emerging as Buhari’s proverbial dark horse.

APC sources in Bayelsa State and authoritative sources in Abuja gave credence to the permutation on Sylva which though had been mentioned in the past was now getting a life of its own.

The powerful cabal around the president consisting mostly of kin from Katsina and party loyalists from the North it was gathered have been flummoxed by the determination of some of those they had initially ruled out from forging ahead. Two of those it was gathered are Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who it was learnt has insisted on exercising his democratic rights in a free and fair primary. He appears to be the man to beat, all things being equal.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, another prospect has also shocked the cabal with the weight of favour that his aspiration has garnered. However, the cabal it was gathered, is unshaken by different polls and studies that put Osinbajo as one of the best bets for the APC to retain power in 2023 with insinuations of lack of trust in the professor.

The prospects of Governor Kayode Fayemi who is also said to be preparing to roll out his campaigns are also said not to have won the favour of the cabal.

However, many, mostly from the South including Rotimi Amaechi, Ibikunle Amosun, President Goodluck Jonathan among others are said to have been considered by the cabal. Jonathan it was gathered has, however, given as his condition that he must be adopted as a consensus, a prospect that the cabal has not been able to guarantee.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the eventual retreat of Russian forces from Ukraine’s southeastern city of Mariupol would reveal “far worse” atrocities than the “death, destruction and atrocities” left in Bucha. He spoke in Panama after a meeting with representatives of Latin American countries.

“The conditions there, the situation there, as a result of this Russian aggression, are truly horrific,” he said.

Blinken said that despite the U.S. advising on the conditions of the humanitarian corridors to escape Mariupol, the final assessment and the “burden” of the decision rests in the hands of the Ukrainian government and the people themselves.

“Security has been violated by Russian forces. And so people leaving, believing they could have done it safely and securely, were fired upon,” Blinken said of previous humanitarian corridors.

Earlier on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that the country’s armed forces have been unable to “unblock” Mariupol, which has been besieged by Russian forces in a recent push by its military.

With the race for Nigeria’s top seat heating up and the interested regions find themselves putting up arguments supporting claims that put them in advantage over the other geological/political zones. He threatened that Ohanaeze will switch and turn its support to Biafra agitation – and not for Nigeria unity.

Nnia Nwodo’s take almost matches a recent opinion by Fani Kayode – where he masterfully analyzed the reasons where the political block in Nigeria will never allow the Igbo to mount the President seat as President.

Kayode explained that Nigeria as presently constituted are afraid to allow a south easterner to become President because of a lack of trust. “The Hausa/Fulani does not trust the Igbo man”. They want to stay in power in perpetuity.
