The confrontation between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Junta states may have just escalated. There are reportedly thousands of recorded deaths as a result of the back-and-forth between the two parties, and Burkina Faso blames ECOWAS. This has resulted in a grievance, which was expounded on during a speech by military commander Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ.
The Junta states in West Africa, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso and the regional bloc ECOWAS have been at odds, occasionally throwing jabs at each other. While ECOWAS has been imposing economic sanctions on these countries, Burkina Faso, along with other Junta governments, has decided to opt out of the regional bloc.
However, considering the recent remarks in a speech given by the Junta head of Burkina Faso, Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ, ECOWAS’s actions have had terrible repercussions.
A tweet by the journalist Sy Marcus Herve Traore showed that Burkina Faso’s Junta leader, Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ holds ECOWAS particularly its head, Nigeria’s president Bola Ahmed Tinubu responsible for the the deaths of thousands of Nigériens.
During Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ’s speech, he mentioned that the sanctions imposed on the people of Niger by ECOWAS have led to the death of thousands of its citizens. He noted that this however has not taken away the fighting spirit of the Nigérien people.
“Do you think there are weak men who are in Niger 🇳🇪? There are fighters over there. The Nigérien army is warlike. They have been fighting for years. It’s not an army of parade or a peacekeeping army. And the armies of the AES decided to unite,” Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ said.
He also mentioned that they are prepared to take on the ECOWAS forces that had been touted to be on standby.
“We are waiting for that standby force (ECOWAS). Thousands of Nigériens died on their hospital beds because of a lack of electricity or lack of medicine. It is a crime! They are responsible for these sanctions, they are responsible for these deaths.”
The remains of the popular Nollywood actor, John Okafor, fondly known as Mr Ibu, have been brought to Enugu State.
Accompanied by his family, including his second son, the late actor’s body arrived in Enugu on Tuesday.
Mr Ibu, a veteran actor renowned for his comedic prowess, passed away at the age of 62 due to cardiac arrest. He had been battling a prolonged illness that necessitated the amputation of one of his legs, stemming from a diagnosis of diseased blood vessels.
In their plea for financial assistance from the public, his family cited the actor’s ongoing health struggles, including persistent blood clotting in his leg and other complications that posed grave risks to his life.
As Enugu State receives the mortal remains of this beloved cultural icon, the Nigerian entertainment industry mourns the loss of a cherished talent whose contributions to the world of cinema will be remembered for years to come.
I was paid N10,000 for my first movie role — Rita Dominic
Nollywood actress Rita Dominic has revealed that she was paid the sum of N10,000 for her first movie role.
Rita Dominic made this revelation in a recent interview with Joy 99.7 FM in Ghana.
When asked about the lowest amount she has ever received for a movie role, she said, “The first film I did, the filmmaker paid me N35,000. But he owed me N25,000 for how many months. In fact, he didn’t even pay me the balance. He paid me only N10,000.”
The actress said when she started acting, Nollywood wasn’t lucrative but she was driven by her passion.
She said “I just wanted to be an actor. And to be honest, there was no money in Nollywood back then. We were just doing it for passion. We have the passion for the art which was what fuelled us.
“It was very challenging. But we just kept doing it until the industry got bigger and bigger. And obviously, the pay became much better.”
Fubara had said, “What is this struggle all about? …with all the power financially, (Wigwe) couldn’t control life.”
Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, told the governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, that if there is nothing in the struggle for politics, he (Fubara) should remove himself from the acclaimed struggle.
Akpabio stated this during his speech and tribute at the funeral of the former CEO of Access Bank and banking icon, Herbert Wigwe, in response to Fubara’s comment directed to the political class who attended Wigwe’s funeral.
The River’s State governor, during his speech at the funeral service, had said, “What is this struggle all about? You want to kill, you want to bury, what is it all about? This is a man, he’s not a politician. He made his money through us, our investments.
“He has the world in his palm financially. He controls even the political classes. But today, with all the power financially, couldn’t control life.
“Is it not enough today to ask ourselves why are we struggling? Why are we not making impact in the life of our people? Please, political class, let’s go home with that question, and be answering it in our minds, and reflecting it in what we do.”
In response, Akpabio, while mourning Wigwe, said, “We’re not going to cry in one day alone, we’ll cry so many days. When you look at the university, you will cry. When you pass through his personal house and edifice, you will cry. Any of the Access Bank branches worldwide, whether the one in Dubai, or whether the one in Kenya or anywhere, you will cry. The children that he touched, those that he sent to school and the lives he touched, when they are talking about it and they mention his name, you will cry.
“Then you will ask yourself, just like Governor Fubara said, what is the struggle all about? Your excellency, Governor Fubara, if there is nothing in the struggle, don’t struggle.”
Eulogizing Wigwe, Akpabio said, “Herbert was an iconic person; he was a people’s person. I believe he was a friend and a brother to all that came across him.”
Herbert Wigwe, along with his wife, Chizoba, and son, Chizi, have been laid to rest in a private interment in their hometown of Omueke, Isiokpo, Rivers State.
The funeral followed a week-long series of funeral rites honouring the life of the banking executive and his family.
The funeral service, which commenced some minutes past 11am, drew mourners from various spheres, including friends, associates, and well-wishers from both local and international communities.
Notable figures present at the service included Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, and the Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri.
The funeral also had the presence of top dignitaries such as HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II, business leader Aliko Dangote, Chairman THISDAY-ARISE Media Group, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Nigerian banker and Wigwe’s partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Investment banker and entrepreneur, Atedo Peterside, Gilbert Chagoury, Tunde Folawiyo, Afreximbank President Benedict Oramah among others.
Also, two former governors of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi and Celestine Omehia, former Senate President Bukola, Saraki, former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, and Nigerian Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, were present at the service.
The tragic incident that claimed the lives of Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son occurred when the Airbus Helicopter EC 130B4 they were on crashed near Halloran Springs, California, on February 9, 2024. The cause of the crash is yet to be determined, with a preliminary report from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) indicating that the chopper was seen as a “fireball” by witnesses before crashing. The weather on the day of the incident was reported to be a mix of rain and snow.
Throughout the funeral events, tributes were paid by numerous friends, captains of industry, family members, and associates to honour the late banking guru.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on Sunday, said its operatives intercepted a consignment of illicit drug consignment concealed in the engine compartment of an interstate commercial bus.
The agency said it also arrested and took into custody two grandfathers over alleged drug trafficking.
The NDLEA noted that no fewer than 5.2kg of cannabis sativa and opioids were discovered in the engine compartment of the interstate commercial bus marked VDY 187 XA on Thursday, 7th March 2024, along Gbongan – Ibadan road, Osun State by its officers on a stop and search operation on the highway.
The anti-narcotic agency said the bus driver, Iorliam Sughnen Dominic, 35, who took responsibility for the concealment was taken into custody for further investigation.
Details of the drug burst were disclosed in a statement by Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy.
Babafemi said the previous day Wednesday 6th March, a 26-year-old lady, Obasanmi Esther Iyanu, who produces and distributes skuchies was arrested during a raid on her hideout in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
He disclosed that at least 16.5 litres of the illicit substance and different quantities of molly and cannabis were recovered from her during the raid.
Babafemi further announced that NDLEA operatives in Borno State arrested a 70-year-old grandfather, Mallam Mai Gemu Adam and 65-year-old Yamama Musa for drug trafficking.
According to the spokesman, they were arrested on Saturday 9th March along with 24-year-old Abubakar Ya’u and Babagana Abubakar Ali, 28, in Maiduguri and Gamboru-Ngala respectively while 32,000 ampoules of tramadol injection were recovered from them.
“Same day, operatives at Geidam in Yobe State intercepted a Golf 3 saloon car heading to Gagamari in Niger republic, where the occupant, Alhaji Mala Tijjani, 28, was to deliver 40 blocks of cannabis weighing 24.5kg to another dealer, while 42 cartons containing 8,400 bottles of codeine syrup weighing 1,260 kilograms were recovered from a driver, Mutari Ya’u, 29, at Katsina road, Kaduna on Tuesday 5th March.
“In Kano State, Nura Yusuf, 35, was arrested with 62kg cannabis at Gadar Tamburawa area, where Abubakar Sani, 40, was also nabbed with 244 bottles of codeine syrup, while Mohammad Alkali, 28, was found with 49, 800 pills of tramadol along Kano-Maiduguri road, on Thursday 7th March. This is just as NDLEA operatives in Lagos State on Wednesday 6th March arrested Aba Thomas at the Igbo Elerin area of the state where 84 litres of scrunchies, 1.1 litres of codeine syrup,4kg cannabis sativa, and 800 tablets of tramadol 225mg were seized from him.
Anthony Joshua knocked out Francis Ngannou with a devastating second-round finish to shatter any prospect of a sensational upset and continue his march towards becoming a three-time world champion on Friday.
Joshua floored a shell-shocked Ngannou with a vicious right hand in the opening round before knocking down the former UFC heavyweight champion twice in the next, the second of which would leave Ngannou flat out for the count.
It arrived as the most destructive knockout of Joshua’s career to follow up statement stoppages over Robert Helenius and Otto Wallin in reigniting his pursuit of another world title opportunity.
The prospective prize had featured prominently throughout the build-up in Saudi Arabia, with victory now expected to pave the way to a shot at the winner of Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s clash for the undisputed heavyweight championship.
"When I saw the fight with Fury, I thought damn, this guy could fight, I wanted a piece of that,” said Joshua post-fight.
"He's an inspiration, a great champion, and this shouldn't take away from his capabilities. He can come again. I told him he shouldn't leave boxing. He's two fights in, and he's fought the best.
"He can go a long way if he stays dedicated."
Joshua had cut a laser-focused figure all week amid all the pageantry and promises, maintaining that approach as he delivered a knockout clinic to hand Ngannou a ruthless exposure to the true world of heavyweight boxing.
Ngannou had arrived riding the momentum of a staggering debut performance against Fury back in October, his shock third-round knockdown in defeat to the WBC champion earning him another lucrative day between the ropes. As 4am approached in Saudi Arabia, Joshua was in no mood for further drama.
The former unified world champion paraded his superior speed during the opening exchanges when he left Ngannou on his backside with a bruising right hand to set the tone, asserting his authority behind feints to which the MMA-convert could find no read.
Joshua then punished Ngannou's southpaw stance in the second with a crashing right fist to put his opponent down again, before crowning the job seconds later with another shuddering right to leave his man out cold and in need of treatment on the canvas.
The win moves Joshua to 28-3 in his career while offering another statement of intent before the eyes of Fury in the front-row at ringside following the Gypsy King's laboured split-decision win over Ngannou towards the end of last year.
Joshua wasted no time in making a beeline for the winner of Fury and Usyk, who will meet on May 18, while also paying tribute to the impact of his relationship with trainer Ben Davison, whose introduction has coincided with something of a resurgence of the cold-blooded knockout instincts that had fuelled the Olympian's early career success.

2023 Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC) whose radical agenda is to pull Nigeria out of the doldrums has said after proceedings of his court trial that the revolution the Nigerian government is running from Is about to happen.
We were at the Federal High Court in Abuja today in furtherance of #RevolutionNow #ShamTrial by the Nigerian government, we arrived court ready for trial but as typical of the FGN they said they’re not ready, claiming the last prosecutor has been transferred out of the Ministry of (In)Justice. Again, our lawyers argued strongly that Judge discard of the case but the judge adjourned again after “warning” he would dismiss the case if they are not ready! Remember it was the same threat last time!
Nurses under the aegis of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Abuja chapter, on Monday, protested against the new verification certification guidelines released by the Nigeria and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
The nurses expressed displeasure over what they described as an attempt to hinder their freedom to pursue career opportunities, asking the council to address nurses’ welfare, salary scale, shortage of staff, and other rights.
The protest monitored by our correspondent was carried out at the NMCN’s office in Abuja.
The NMCN had on February 7, 2024, issued a circular revising the guidelines for requesting verification of certificates for nurses and midwives.
The council’s circular was released after The PUNCH reported the deactivation of the verification portal on NMCN’s website in December 2023.
The circular signed by the Registrar of the council, Dr Faruk Abubakar, read in part, “A non-refundable fee per application shall be paid for verification to foreign boards of nursing as specified on the portal. This shall cover the cost of courier services to the applicant’s institution(s) of training, place of work, and foreign board.
“Eligible applicants must have a minimum of two years post qualification experience from the date of issuance of the permanent practicing licence. Any application with a provisional licence shall be rejected outright.
“The council shall request a letter of good standing from the chief executive officer of the applicant’s place(s) of work and the last nursing training institution attended and responses on these shall be addressed directly to the Registrar/CEO, NMCN. Please note that the council shall not accept such letter(s) through the applicant.”
The council also stated that applicants must have active practicing licences with a minimum of six months to the expiration date, and processing of verification applications would take a minimum of six months.
It added that the implementation of the guidelines takes effect from March 1, 2024.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the nurses and midwives were at the NMCN office protesting, singing, and carrying placards around the premises peacefully.
Some of the placards read, ‘Address unemployment among nurses, address quackery, address nurses welfare’.
Others are: ‘#No to verification rules,’ ‘Stop frustrating the Nigerian nurses,’ ‘We are going through a lot already, Protect nurses, protect healthcare,’ ‘NMCN, we say no to the verification rules,’ NMCN don’t reduce nurses.’
Speaking with our correspondent, one of the nurses’ spokesmen, Cynthia Adeyeri urged the government to improve the welfare of nurses, instead of issuing new guidelines on certificate verification.
Adeyeri said, [b]“We are to give the Registrar a letter and to say our displeasure over the certificate verification. We are saying no to making us work two years before we can leave (the country), we are saying no to getting a letter of good standing from the CMD from our hospitals, and we are saying no to other things in the circular.
“The government should dialogue with young nurses to ask us why we are leaving Nigeria. We have a poor healthcare infrastructure and that is why people are leaving, they want to go to where they have better pay and better welfare. The welfare of nurses in Nigeria is very poor.
“We want them to increase our pay and make the system better for the nurses and the patients.”
Another nurse, Isioma Alexis said nurses in the country are against the circular issued by the nursing council.
Alexis stated, “We are saying no to the circular that was released. There is no correlation between getting a letter of good standing from where we work and getting the verification certificate.
“We are telling them to reverse everything that is in that circular to what it used to be, both the ones they have not even implemented or what they are still thinking of implementing.
“We are thinking of improvement but they are giving us a shock of our lives.”
Addressing the nurses during the peaceful protest, the Registrar said the nurses’ complaints would be addressed as soon as possible.
Abubakar said, “We have listened to you and we are going to address it in a short time, in a couple of days. I have listened to you and I have heard you. I want to acknowledge the way you are mobilised and I want to assure you that your documents will be looked at holistically and will address every issue.”
He said nobody is against the nurses and midwives travelling out of the country.
“Nigeria is our only country, we don’t have any other country apart from Nigeria. Nobody is against you travelling and whatever policy that is coming on board is in the best interest of Nigerians.
“You have written your complaints and we will look at them one by one and get back to you.
“Go back to your respective place of work, and I assure you that in a couple of days, we will respond,”he noted.
The NMCN is the only legal, administrative, corporate and statutory body charged with performing specific functions on behalf of the Federal Government to ensure the delivery of safe and effective Nursing and Midwifery care to the public through quality education and best practices.
The council is mandated by law to regulate the standards of Nursing and Midwifery education and practice in Nigeria and to review such standards from time to time to meet the changing health needs of the society.
Eventually, the Nigeria national football team made it to the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON 2023) finals. Even though the nation always seemed to have talent in their camp, they never managed to reach the finals since 2013. The Super Eagles won that edition though.
It is a surprise that even though they have been able to play 15 semi finals they only have 3 titles to show for. This tournament’s semi-final was a big hurdle for the José Peseiro’s men amidst their bad luck for many years. But now they are in the big time, at the centre stage, the finals of the AFCON 2023.
In the final, the host nation Ivory Coast now stands in their way. The two nations will battle it out for the AFCON 2023 title at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé. The stadium was established in October 2020 keeping in mind the AFCON games.
With the final set to fire the adrenaline through the roof on 12 February (1:30 AM IST), let’s have a look at the journey so far.
Group A Runners-Up
Nigeria were drawn in Group A of the 2023 AFCON group stages. Group A featured the likes of Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast also happens to be the host nation of the tournament.
On matchday 1, the Super Eagles were up against Equatorial Guinea. In the game, the National Thunder went ahead at the 36-minute mark. However, the lead lasted just 2 minutes before Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen levelled the scoring. A draw and a point from the opening game at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé was earned.

The Super Eagles in action against Ivory Coast in the group stage
On matchday 2, José Peseiro’s men were up against the host nation itself, the Ivory Coast. The game saw the Elephants manage 65 per cent of the ball possession. But a William Troost-Ekong spot-kick goal meant the result going the other way.
On matchday 3, with a win over the hosts, Nigeria were up against final group stage opponents Guinea-Bissau. This game was also of fine margins. Only an own goal by Opa Sanganté allowed another set of three points on the Group A table. This meant the West African nation totalled 7 points and were through as runners-up.
Round of 16 and quarterfinals against Central African nations
In the Round of 16, Atalanta‘s Ademola Lookman was the star of the show. The game was played out at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny stadium in the city of Abidjan. The opposition was none other than Group C runner-up Cameroon. The Indomitable Lions were denied a spot in the quarter-finals. Lookman’s brace of goals helped move the venture further to the quarter-finals for the Nigerian squad.
Another country from Central Africa met at the crossroads. This time it was Angola in the quarters.
Once again the venue was similar. Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny proudly hosted the showdown between the Angola national football team and the Nigeria national football team. Head coach Peseiro had asked his side to line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation. The scorer of two goals last time out, Lookman was spearheading the left wing.
Ademola Lookman couldn’t help but score once again. A first-half goal from him was the only difference between the two sides after the final whistle.
The taste of adversity against South Africa in the semi-finals
After a runner-up finish in Group E, South Africa made it to the semi-finals eventually. They had managed to brush past 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Morocco in the Round of 16. And later also halted the progress of Cape Verde. The Island nation was the first side to qualify from the group stages in this tournament.
Given Hugo Broos’s men had beaten two strong opponents in the knockouts, this game was expected to be anything but easy. And so it was. Bafana Bafana troubled the Nigerian team in the first half by putting 3 shots on target.
In the second half, Osimhen was brought down inside the box. Captain William Troost-Ekong struck the ball centrally to give the Nigerians hope and a lead. But the semi-final drama wasn’t ending there. VAR intervened in the final minutes to award a penalty. Percy Tau was brought down in the final minute of the game. And eventually, Broos’s men were level with the Super Eagles.
After a full 120 minutes of gameplay, the match was sent to penalties. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saved two and the winner was scored by fairly unused star, Kelechi Iheanacho.
It may come as a surprise, but Nigeria will be facing the hosts Ivory Coast in the AFCON 2023 finals. The surprising part is that both teams kick-started the tournament in the same group which is Group A.
In their Group A meeting, a goal by captain William Troost-Ekong helped Nigeria win that fixture. The final is set to be played out at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé. And with a whole nation backing their opponents, will Nigeria realise their dream? Only time will tell.

Social critic and human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, on Monday declared that nobody can intimidate her as she continues to demand good governance from the President Bola Tinubu administration.
Yesufu insisted that she will continue to criticise Tinubu’s government over the rising economic hardships and worsening insecurity in the country, arguing that Tinubu did same in the past.
Yesufu, in a video sighted by DAILY POST, slammed those she alleged were trying to intimidate her because of her stance against the government.
The social critic maintained that she has the same right as Tinubu, who she said had criticized former President Goodluck Jonathan over similar happenings in the country.
In the 10 minutes video she shared on her X handle, Yesufu digged out past tweets in which Tinubu criticized Jonathan, insisting, “It’s our turn to demand good governance and accountability.”
“The right Bola Ahmed Tinubu had to call out Government in 2014 is the Right Aisha Yesufu has in 2024 to call out an illegitimate government.
“No Nigerian is more Nigerian than any Nigerian. We are all citizens in this country; no one is a slave. This country belongs to all of us, and nobody can intimidate us in our own father land. No one can intimidate us in this country everyone is a stakeholder to.
“So, all this talk about trying to get people intimidated, drop it! Drop it!……..”if they break head, nothing dey there, blood go gush out.” That’s it.
“Wherever, however, anyway they want am, na so e go be”. This country like I said, belongs to all us.
“It’s our turn to demand good governance and accountability. It’s our best to ensure Nigeria has the best it’s supposed to have. It’s our turn to have free, good quality education and development.
“If you like put a bullet through this woman, the message will be there.”
“It’s better to die for nothing than to live for nothing.”
“We will speak whether they like it or not. We are citizens. And I repeat, no Nigerian is more Nigerian than any of us. This is our country.”

Former Nigerian professional tennis player, Tanya Okpala, has been found mentally unstable and wandering the streets of Awka, Anambra State.
Tanya, who represented Nigeria in tennis during the 1990s, is a half-cast with a mother from Belarus and a father of Igbo extraction.
In a video shared across social media, the former tennis champion appeared unstable and was seen begging for money and drinks.
During a conversation with an unidentified man in the video, the tennis star, seemingly nursing a wound on her left leg, stated that she is a former lawn tennis player who has been abandoned.
She mentioned that she has been labeled a prostitute by people in the areas and has been asked to return to her country but considers herself an Igbo lady.
She however, appealed for help saying that she is planning to return to her village the next day to care for her daughter.
She said in parts, “I was a former lawn tennis champion in Nigeria. I don’t know if you are familiar with Tanya Okpala and Jacqueline Okwueze during those days. I played tennis for Nigeria and Africa.”
When asked about using any recreational center for her health, she declined to answer, stating, “I think if somebody is very mentally sick, I don’t think it is my business how the person is taking care of himself or herself.”
Tanya Okpala (Fmr Tennis champion) is now in the custody of the Anambra State Government. She was with the Commissioner of Women Affairs when my wife spoke with her on the phone. My government will ensure her rehabilitation and fruitful reunion with her daughter and family.

Popular TV talkshow, Reality Radio and TV Talk Magazine narrated how a family was asked to pay N250,000 to the police before they could get any assistance to rescue their loved ones who were held hostage by kidnappers in Mpape, a suburb of Abuja.
According to the presenter who was revealing the information, they managed to raise N100,000, which they offered to the police, hoping that they would swing into action and track down the kidnappers.
However, to their dismay, the police advised them to negotiate directly with the kidnappers and pay whatever ransom they demanded.
The police assured the family that they would pursue the kidnappers after the victims were safely released.
This alleged act by the police reflects the corruption that plagues the country, especially in the face of the rising spate of kidnappings for ransom.
