伴随科技发展，我们进入了所谓的加速主义时代。加速主义代表着这样一种看法：人类能够通过科技的不断进步和创新，来解决现有问题，哪怕新科技会带来新问题，只要我们前进的速度够快，我们就能够不断地解决掉旧问题，摧毁旧有的结构和观念。加速主义如今已经成为社会主流，即便可以细分为左翼加速主义和右翼加速主义——二者在权力的分配结构上各有侧重，但是总体而言都是一派观点。
然而，从更广阔的视角来看，比如非人类中心主义视角会将整个地球视为一个大的生物圈，具有自我调节的生命的有机体，即所谓的盖亚假说。人类在加速主义趋势下，不断从自然界抢夺资源，造成很多物种灭绝。其后果之一，可能是加速自我灭亡的过程。在有些一家之言看来，今年的疫情是大的生态系统为了对冲人类的过度扩张、过分快速的碳排放等所生成的对冲手段。
从这一角度来讲，异化与加速主义是否导向自取灭亡的道路，完全取决于我们站在什么立场、以何种时空尺度来讨论问题，或许在我们有生之年这个问题都很难有确切答案。
