TV/MoviesRe: Do Nigerians Appreciate Subtlety In Movies? by MadMax1(f): 12:30pm On Aug 08, 2008
I've long stopped watching Nigerian movies. Well, apart from Tunde Kelani's. For one thing there aren't that many good Nigerian actors. The point's been made that home videos target a certain audience, and I guess Nigerian actors  figure method acting as too hard to learn, and too subtle for us to appreciate. I watch a movie for its dialogue, its beauty and the power of its performances. That's why The English Patience remains my most affecting movie experience. The more intelligent Nigerian actors employ their intelligence in carrying a role, but they've no passion for their art, and with art, passion is everything. That's why foreign actors starve themselves, change their diet, undergo a rigorous physical regimen, for the sake of their art. They would do almost anything for it. Here, it's all about the pay packet. I watched Rinko Kikuchi's performance in Babel (That year's best supporting actress oscar should have gone to her or Adriana Barraza). She portrayed a deaf-mute, and managed to convey a myriad of complex emotions, without saying a word. When are Nigerian actors going to give us that pleasure? And the stuff's in us. They harp on about how Nollywood is the third largest film industry in the world. What the hell does that  mean? Nigerian films are poor in almost every respect. If there were good dialogue I'd take the poor sound, editing and technical production- a good movie costs megabucks to produce- but there's no incentive to watch them at all. So I don't. Except for Kelanis.
TV/MoviesWho's The Best James Bond And Who's The Worst? by MadMax1(op): 12:08pm On Aug 08, 2008
Didn't we all get blown away by Daniel Craig's 007 in 2006? With his cruelty and cold charisma he's only the best and most believable Bond ever. I think Roger Moore is the silliest, nancing around like the whole thing's a joke and he's the only one in on it. Who are the best and worst Bonds?
TV/MoviesRe: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by MadMax1(f): 12:03pm On Aug 08, 2008
Schindler's List vs Goodfellas? Hard to call. There's an oldie but goodie, Fight Club. It's dialogue that gets me in a movie, which is why Quentin Tarantino never disappoints. But Fight Club is amazing. It made me an Edward Norton fan for life. I am Jack's surprise the movie did not get several Oscar nods.
Christianity EtcRe: Are The Ten Commandments Really Necessary? by MadMax1(f): 11:05am On Aug 07, 2008
I'm not sure, but I think this is what happened with the Ten Commandments. After existing as a society for a while, laws and rules of conduct emerge and a culture is formed. But the Jews were slaves for hundreds of years and probably adopted the rules of their masters for living. When they left Egypt, God cut to the chase and created a culture and a constitution for them. They would be lost if He hadn't done so. The Ten Commandments, the Sabbath, are meant for the Jews, and that, before Christ came and abolished the Law. Even now the Sabbath is part of the culture of the Jews. It's not a Christian custom. God is partial to Israel, and says so. Christ was a Jew, and that's the ultimate sign of favour to a race. A lot of practices described in the Bible are Jewish traditions and customs, not Yoruba or Ibo or Hausa. One accepts Christ, not the culture of the Jews. The Sabbath, the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. Yom Kippor,et.c. Christ says believe who I am and what I say, accept my death as payment for your sins and turn from them. The first five books of the old testament are a history of the Jews and their God-given laws. It's nothing to do with the New Testament laws by which we should live our lives. If it's in the New Testament, you are bound by it. If the Ten Commandments are in the New Testament, you are bound. I checked. Christ repeated all the commandments for us, except one: The Sabbath. Christianity is not for the Jews alone, hence the omission of their cultural practices from the Faith.Sorry I've been so long-winded. That's just an opinion.
Travel AdsRe: Cheapest Way To Ship Goods From USA To Nigeria? by MadMax1(f): 9:27am On Aug 07, 2008
I saw something similar somewheres. There's a company here that buys all the stuff I need overseas and sends them to my office. The longest it's taken anything I ordered to get to me was 10 days. I can keep track of my stuff too while its in transit. Honestly, so far they've really impressed me with their courtesy and proffesional support. I'll wait a few more months before I give them a five-star rating, see if they don't slip up. But so far, amazing service. Their website is www.palemilion.com.
