Music/Radio / Interview With Maleek Berry, Wizkid's Producer by mafiacent(m): 9:33pm On Feb 21, 2013

Maleek Berry is one of the UK’s rising producers. Born in the heart of South London, Berry grew up listening to some of the biggest names in R&B from Tevin Campbell, Boyz II Men, Jodeci and of course the one and only King of Pop, Michael Jackson. It was at this time, at just the tender age of 14 that he saw young stars break into the American music industry. Although worlds apart from the shores of London this did not deter him but rather spark his ever growing love of the music industry.

Like most, Berry started off his career in the church, forming a group with two close friends. Managing to get his hands on a little pre-production setup – Fruity Loops – the group began writing, producing and performing their own songs at the ages of 14 and 15, only to disband at 16. However, the experience didn’t leave Berry disillusioned, as he was the brains behind a lot of the group’s records and they all remain very close till this day.

Prisonerofclass recently reached out to Maleek Berry and he was kind enough to answer some of our questions

So what’s The Name?
Well my real name is Maleek Berry, but my birth name is Maleek Shoyebi, Berry just my nickname.

You have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, so did you come down to Nigeria for your youth service (NYSC)

"No I'm working from the UK so I haven't gotten around to it yet"

First it was Carolina by Saucekid which featured Davido you also produced about three tracks on Davido’s Album, then your own project “Matter” which featured Wizkid, My Way by Wande Coal and Lagos to Soweto by Wizkid. I have to ask what the secret is.

Honestly, I don’t know. I just go in and try to be free and just make good music. It’s truly a gift from God and I thank Him regularly for it.

Judging by your portfolio of songs, you are obviously a very talented producer, so why are we just hearing the Name Maleek Berry in Nigeria?

I’ve been doing this for a while. Produced for some UK acts too, suck as IKES, S.A.S and many others. I just think that ever since my music crossed the pond that’s when my name started making more noise. But trust me, the whole world will know soon too , by God’s grace, not just Nigeria.

Any Professional Advice for Upcoming producers; what they could do to improve their work
Number one advice is to pick up and instrument and learn that, then find a DAW of your choice, master that , get some gear for a home setup and you are good to go. Just go for it.

Matter which you featured Wizkid is topping every chart in Nigeria, Should we be expecting more from you; like an Album or a Mixtape
Yes I’m working on a project. I don’t want to call it a mixtape because I feel like the quality of the music is of album-level. But be expecting a body of work before the year is up.

Is there any other Nigerian act you’re currently working with?
Yes there are a few who have gotten in touch for some music. Naeto just reached out recently so we’ll see where that goes. I plan on just making great music.

All you works ended up on top of the charts in Nigeria, this must have opened up new doors. So are you picky about who you work with or you work with anyone who can pay your price?

I’ve always been picky about who I work with because music is an art and I care a lot about how my work is perceived by listeners. Money is not a big issue because if I really like the artist I can always work around prices anyway.

Are you signed to any Record Label?

as of now , no; I’m not signed to anyone at the moment. But I have a very rough idea of who I intend to partner up with. It’s best to prove yourself and build buzz before signing anything so you are seen as an asset not a liability.

Thank your Mr. Maleek Berry, any word for your fans & prisonerofclass.com
Thank you so much for the support thus far. I have so much music in me that I will be giving to the world in years to come and hope you all ride with me all the way.

Do You Know Maleek Berry produced three songs on Davido’s O.B.O’s Album, Sauce Kid ft. Davido – “Carolina” & Sina Rambo ft Davido – “Ijo Sina”

Read This on www.ranksng.com this morning, When Boko Haram started, the Nigerian Government wasn't trained on handling Terrorism. I don't blame Jonathan for struggling to contain Boko Haram, Obasanjo and past leaders didn't really put down steps to prevent or arrest terrorism. No Database, No surveillance Cameras, Bomb Detectors, Personnel in Counter Terrorism.
Jonathan was just the easy target for us all to blame.

Literature / Re: Memoirs Of A Drug Lord (Episode 1, 2 & 3) by mafiacent(m): 10:19pm On Feb 12, 2013
It was a long drive back to the hotel, and as I drove slowly, all I could think of was how I shot and killed Robert. Each time the thought popped in my head, I smiled to myself – making up different scenarios that I could have employed in killing him, but in all, he was dead.

I arrived at the hotel very fatigued, that as soon as I made way into my room, I jumped into the bed and slept off like a baby – still fully clothed.

I woke up hours later, still tired, but this time I could tell it was hunger related, so I got up and phoned the hotels kitchen to order for food before stripping to the last piece of clothing I had on and went to take a shower.

I was still getting dressed when I heard a knock on the door. It’s my food – I thought to myself – so I hurriedly wore my sweat pant and t-shirt and went on to open the door.

“It’s called a mobile phone because it’s supposed to be carried around. Where is your phone?” Chairman yelled out as he walked into the room – without Lateef this time but with his bodyguards.

“It’s over there” – I stuttered, pointing to the phone on the bed. “I put it on the silent profile because I didn’t want to be disturbed while I slept” – I continued, while locking the door.

“Because you didn’t want to be disturbed?” He exclaimed, nodding his head in disbelief. Well I won’t blame you. No! I won’t blame you. He negated.

I walked to the edge of the bed where he was seated and stood in front of him with my hands behind me – as a sign of respect knowing fully well that he was angry.

There was a long pause in the room, before chairman finally broke the silence -

“I’m impressed with how far you have come, especially with the way you carried out your assignment last night. Because you claimed it was your first time, I had one of my undercover persons in the police force at the crime scene when the body of the deceased was being moved to the mortuary and my excitement knew no bounds when I was told no evidence was recovered.” He enthused.

I felt the tension in the room ease off a bit, so I relaxed my nerves and got into my comfort zone while still listening to what he was saying.

“Not only am I impressed with you, the Chairman himself, the Oga patapata, the man funding the whole operation has been wowed by your performance and has requested to see you, but not after you make another drop”.

“There is another chairman? So what are you?” I asked looking a tad confused.

“Laughing out loud – yes there is. Everything here is done in a hierarchical order, and at every stage, we have someone we report to just like how you, Lateef and the other boys report to me, I also have someone I report to who might also be accountable to someone. They call me Chairman because it’s me they see as the overall boss but I call him chairman because I know what he is capable of. I’ve met him just twice as he chooses to remain on the background and all our dealings have been done via phone, so for him to want to see you, consider yourself a lucky boy”.

“Everything is happening too fast and right now it’s getting me confused. I haven’t lived a normal life in the last one month and it’s starting to bother me. I need to take a break from this and just do what normal people do”.

“Hmm you would do that son, but right now it’s not about what you want. If you want to be wealthy, you have to do whatever you are being asked to do. Once you are in, you are in there are no days off except maybe you want to face the wrath of the Chairman and believe me when I say you don’t want to”.

Sigh. I have now become slave to a man and his cohorts in the name of making money.

“What about the balance I’m supposed to collect?”

“Oh that, here you go – handing out a brown envelope he took out of his pocket with a bunch of keys to me – that’s $5000. The extra $3500 on it is your part payment for your trip to London in two weeks.”

“London?” A curious I questioned.

“Yes London. The keys are for your new fully furnished apartment in Ogudu. Chairman doesn’t want you living in a hotel and most definitely doesn’t want you back in Ketu”

“Wow”

“Well that’s what you get for being diligent and obedient. There’s still more from where that came from, don’t mess it up. And yes, the car is yours too and the address to the house is inscribed at the back of the envelope. Get your passport across to me so I’d get your visa processed. I guess I should take my leave now, have a good day”.

I locked the door behind him as he left with his guards and for the next twenty to thirty minutes I stood still, speechless. It was another knock on the door that jolted me back to reality. My food had finally arrived but the urge to eat had disappeared, again!

I packed my stuff, concealed the gun in a piece of cloth and hid it in the bottom corner of my suitcase as I headed out of the hotel en route to Ogudu. It was a two bedroom bungalow that was en suite with up to date household amenities.

My life had changed for good – at least so I thought.

The following day I went to a bureau-de-change and converted $2000 into Naira while the other $3000 I opted to deposit at the bank. Was checking out shirts in a store at the palms shopping mall that day when I met the lady who would later be my wife.

The minute I saw her walk into the store, I knew she was the one. Decked up in a blue blouse, black jeggins and black pumps, the aura around her screamed hot and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one checking her out, but I couldn’t bring myself to talk to her. She walked around the store for a while and when I noticed her staring at one of the bags they displayed looking a bit distressed, I figured that was my cue to talk to her.

So I manned up, went up to her and started a conversation. She wanted to buy a Louis Vuitton bag but was short a staggering N120,000. I was N300,000 rich and wasn’t going to spare any expense because to me it was love at first sight but she was insistent on me not doing so claiming she had it covered. We went on and on about it for about forty-five minutes before she finally bulged, after her ATM card still didn’t work, but only on the condition that she would pay me back during the week. I agreed even though I knew I wasn’t going to collect the money back and we exchanged numbers as we left the store. That marked the beginning of another phase in my life.

Two weeks had passed and Tomi and I were waxing strong with each passing day but it was time to make the big trip to London. I had heard a lot about the British Immigration, Metropolitan police and Scotland Yard’s crackdown on drug traffickers. They weren’t good tales but once again I was assured by chairman and lateef that my safety and security was guaranteed. To Tomi I was going on a business trip but to me it was a life changing one that could make or mar me.

Nigerian Immigration has to by far be the worst of the lot, N5000 tip usually gets me treated like a king and my Luggage most times never gets checked. The plane took off at exactly 11:25pm local time and we didn’t arrive at Heathrow airport till 6:30am London time, due to air turbulence. There was no hitch clearing myself with the British Immigration as the drug was properly concealed in baby diapers, and in no time I was being chauffeured to the Best Western Swiss Cottage Hotel where I had earlier made a reservation. It was a forty minute drive from the airport to the hotel and I slept all through the day since I was expected to make the delivery at night.

Around midnight, I got dressed up, put the drugs in a messenger bag and headed to the D Den Legacy club that was just five minutes by feet away from the hotel where I was supposed to meet the client. I had just cut into an alley as directed by the hotel guard when I was jumped by three white boys. One dragged the bag from me, the other gagged me by the throat while the third kicked me to the ground.

It seemed like the beginning of the end.

Yesterday, the Super Eagles of Nigeria lifted the African Nations Cup courtesy of a beautifully taken goal by Sunday Mba. What a lovely goal! What soon followed were some nervy moments and boy did so many thoughts cross my head, All Nigerians wanted was the Cup, it didn’t matter how we played, When the Referee approached the Keeper Vicent Enyeama for the ball in the 94th Minute of the Match, his heart was in his mouth; the Referee only does that when he awards a penalty. Africans love to do things differently, He simply blew his whistle signalling the end of the Tournament! The feeling that followed that final whistle – Priceless. Enyeama attempted lifting the Referee; He simply couldn’t believe it – He had just won the African Nations Cup.

Stephen Keshi’s team of Seventeen AFCON Debutantes just did the impossible. Even though Joseph Yobo lifted the trophy and wouldn’t take his hands off it, It was our Trophy; John Mikel Obi, Vicent Enyeama, Emmanuel Emenike, Efe Ambrose, Victor Moses and all other members of the Squad should have been given their time with the cup, Joseph Yobo thought differently.

However, with this new development, more football loving fans, will be cheering Stephen Keshi‘s men to victory, as they seek to bring back a trophy they won last in 1994.

Recommended Tweaks

Octopus Keyboard – This tweak brings the BlackBerry 10 keyboard to jailbroken iOS devices. You’ve seen the previews and the demo videos of BB10 in action, and if the keyboard takes your fancy, this tweak is one for you to consider.

Stride – Stride offers an alternative, action-based system for unlocking your device. If you find the passcode or password unlocking system to be a little dull and mundane, Stride’s method of allowing you to draw a specific pattern will certainly spice things up.

PhotoFilters – As the name implies, this tweak allows you to apply filters to your photos natively. Since Instagram, photo filtering has become immensely popular, and if you wish to dabble at device level, check out the PhotoFilters tweak.

Dashboard X – One of the biggest gripes with iOS is its lack of widgets, but with the Dashboard X tweak, you can have widgets right on your home screen. There are bunch pre-loaded into the app, and they can easily be resized and moved around your home screen.

IntelliScreenX – This tweak vastly extends your device’s Notification Center, providing essentially everything you could ever need from within iOS’s pull-down menu. Features include improved Mail support, Extended Calendar, Twitter / Facebook, RSS Reader, and Quick Reply, among many others.

Messages+ – Made by the same developer as IntelliScreenX, Messages+ offers a well-rounded, altogether more feature-rich messaging app. Its champion feature is the Quick Reply, which lets you respond to a message from within any app, and if you purchase IntelliScreenX, this one’s absolutely free!

BiteSMS – This is far and away my favorite tweak of all time. For those uninitiated, it’s an extended version of the stock Messages apps, and includes a whole host of wonderful features including timed messages, quick compose, passcode lock, and custom themes.

Bulletin – Brings the Notification Center to the lock screen. I’m unsure as to why Apple doesn’t offer this option as standard, but if you want to check all of your notifications without opening up your device, this tweak is for you.

– This tweak swaps voice-recognition sidekick Siri with Google Voice Search. Ideal for pre-Siri devices, NowNow does require you to be running the latest version of the Google Search app, but once that’s installed, NowNow is free over at the BigBoss repository.

iFile – This one allows you to browse your device’s file system. If you plan on installing quite a few tweaks, it’s a necessity, and even if you’re not, it’s useful to have as an explorer.

Springtomize 2 – This tweak is arguably the only app you’ll ever need in order to customize your device. Whichever element you’re looking to modify, be it your status bar, icons, text, whatever, you can do so with Springtomize 2.

Zephyr – As well as allowing the multitasking bar to be revealed by a swipe from the bottom upwards, Zephyr allows one to slide between the active display of open apps, akin to the four-finger gesture on iPad.

SBSettings
– SBSettings is, many would say, the most useful tweak on the Cydia store. If you have jailbroken before, you’ll already be more than aware of its capabilities, but for the uninitiated; SBSettings provides an easily accessible menu of all your device’s key functions in any one place. Once activated, one can toggle Wi-Fi, 3G, Data, Location Services, Brightness, Airplane mode, and other features on / off with a simple tap, as well respring / reboot / lock / safe mode or power off with absolute ease. Oh Apple, please make this a native feature!

Switchy – Switchy is yet another app switcher / multitask bar tweak, and as well as housing the ability to clear all apps with one tap (useful if, like me, you’ve a tendency to leave many open at any given moment), but it allows for two rows of icons, making things twice as easy to manage.

Activator – Activator allows you to assign various activation methods to perform certain behaviors. These be based on a variety of gestures, such as swipe, tap, shake or sequential pressing of physical buttons.
AirBlue Sharing – Apple doesn’t like you sharing content between iOS or non-iOS devices, but if connected to the same network, AirBlue Sharing will use the Wi-Fi connection for the transfer of files. There is also Bluetooth sharing, but it’s much slower.

WinterBoard – Created by Saurik, this is the original theming app for iOS. WinterBoard differs somewhat from Springtomize in that it focuses on the overall look of the lock screen and home screen. If you don’t feel like theming yourself, there are trillions of pre-made themes available online and through Cydia, so there’s bound to be a look to suit you. Oh and if you decide to install WinterBoard, make sure you try Ayecon theme, it is by far the best theme available for jailbroken devices.

App Locker – Pretty self-explanatory, App Locker allows you to lock your apps with a password. This is especially useful if you don’t want to unlock your device every time you use it, but want to keep certain apps closed from prying eyes.

Zeppelin – This allows you to change your carrier logo / text to an icon of your desire. You can even get the Redmond Pie logo if you so desire!

f.lux – f.lux is a truly unique app which brings a warmer, ‘sunset’ overlay to your device’s screen. It’s certainly one that has to be experienced to be appreciated, and you can also set it to activate only at night, which is useful since it’s easier on your eyes.

OverBoard – OverBoard allows you to view pages of home screens at a glance. If you’ve a million apps and find it hard to manage them, OverBoard may just be your ticket.
