They are actually more knowledgeable than FIRS when it comes to customs procedures and classification. Collecting customs and excise duties is not as simple as people make it out to be. Customs have centuries of experience in this, and I don’t think there can be trade facilitation without assessing duties. Is the government planning to take over the customs offices at the ports and borders and hand them over to FIRS? If a customs officer catches a vehicle or container with underpayment of duties, is he supposed to refer it to FIRS to collect the duties? And if they catch smuggled goods, who will be in charge? I’m not sure how they plan to arrange this, but I see too many flaws that could lead to sabotage.

They are not asking Firs to start going after evaders. The enforcement remains with NCS, it’s just collection and Remittance that firs is to handle. A good number of countries have this kind of structure it’s not rocket science

There are lot of technicalities in collecting customs duties that require different type of training.

Customs is a profession itself bro. Even in customs there's specialization.

If you are not in the industry you'll not understand.

What other countries does is to make customs department under firs so the payment for duties goes to firs payment revenue pool directly but it's customs that collect it.

That's what the countries that Taiwo Oyedele that's making reference with do.

Check Kenya revenue service, south Africa revenue board, Canada that's all the model they used which the guy is referencing.
