Career / 5 Simple Ways To Build Your Confidence Before An Interview by mailtimi(m): 11:32am On Feb 17, 2016
Heading into a big interview can be terrifying, not unlike the feeling I’d imagine you’d have if you were about to jump out of a plane for the first time ever.

Of course, there's little risk of actual death (unless, of course, you're improbably applying for head coach at lion-taming school), but it’s nonetheless an anxiety-producing scenario.

Summon your self-confidence and conjure your courage in five easy ways.
1. Stop the storytelling

Your brain’s primary job is to minimize danger and maximize reward, so in a situation where there's an unknown outcome — especially a situation where you might screw up — your mind’s going to start telling you stories designed to keep you safe, tales that will help you from feeling the crush.

I'll never get the job, and I'm about to get called on my spectacular lack of suitability. What if the hiring manager hates me? These kinds of opportunities always go to someone on the inside or someone they already know, I have no chance.

Your brain will always spin stories when it doesn't know what will happen, so it's vital that you recognize what your overly analytic mind is doing in creating these works of fiction. Notice the fear-filled worries and let yourself consider the hilarity of them for just a moment, and then get yourself back to reality stat. It’s the only way you’re going to build the confidence you need for a home-run interview
2. Return to your best

Being at your best means being at the top of your game, the place where you’re buzzing, flowing, and really feeling alive. When you’re in that place, two things are happening. First off, you're simply using everything you've got in the moment (all those skills, all that experience, all your smarts, all your talents, all your strengths and all that instinct) and, secondly, you’re not letting anxiety get in the way of your confidence.

In an interview, these two things combine to give you the sense that this is OK; that you’re OK. It’s sitting in that chair feeling whole and resourceful rather than incomplete and on edge.

To enlist this feeling, try this exercise: Sit and close your eyes, and dive into how it feels when you’re firing on all cylinders. Check in to see where that feeling lives in your body — maybe in your stomach or your chest or your fingertips. Imagine that place in your body being the source of this energy, this flow, this power, this ease. Then, when you need it, just focus on that place in your body, and you’ll return to your best.

Career / 10 Bad Work Habits To Eliminate Before Becoming An Entrepreneur by mailtimi(m): 8:17am On Nov 27, 2015
We all have bad work habits, and most of us are content to get away with them for the foreseeable future. Sure, they may make us a little less productive, and they might not look great in a performance review, but they’re relatively innocuous when they creep into our daily lives.

When you step up to be an entrepreneur, everything changes. You’ll have more direction, more authority and more freedom, but you’ll also have far more accountability for your decisions and habits. Not only will most of your actions have a direct and substantial impact on the health and future of the business, they’ll also set an example for the other people you work with, and set a tone for the entire organization.

Before stepping out fully as an entrepreneur, be sure to eliminate these 10 bad work habits:

1. Not planning your day (or week).

You can get away with this in a job you can muddle through, but, as an entrepreneur, if your priorities aren’t clear, you may never be able to dig yourself out of that hole. Each day, and each week, preview everything you need to do and organize those tasks based on order of importance.

2. Reacting to emails as soon as they come in.

Prompt responses are almost always a good thing, so there’s no fault in wanting to respond as quickly as possible. However, responding to emails all day is an inefficient way to go about your tasks. Plan your projects and tasks in advance, and don’t let emails relentlessly distract you. One exception to this rule, however, is sales personnel, whose quick email response may prove essential for landing a sale.

3. Communicating inefficiently.

Inefficiently written emails or conversations in meetings might cause a slight hiccup in someone's average day-to-day work, but in the context of a budding business, these problems may cause serious headaches and make your company look unprofessional. Take an inventory of your communications skills, and make improvements where necessary. Don’t rush through anything, and think carefully about what you mean to say.

4. Settling into a firm routine.

Routines are useful for productivity, especially for everyday tasks you might otherwise forget. However, settling too deeply or firmly into a routine could put you in a poor position when things change abruptly (and they will in a startup). As an entrepreneur, be flexible enough to change your approach when the situation demands it.

Career / 4 Most Important Things To Include On Your Resume To Land A Job In Social Media by mailtimi(m): 1:01pm On Nov 10, 2015
Having a job in social media means more than just posting cat pictures all day.

Your resume is often the first impression you make with an employer. And if you want to work in social media, you’ll need to demonstrate that you are both creative and strategic. Here are the four most important things to include when you apply (cats optional):

Tools and software you are familiar with

Managing a company’s social media presence or strategizing for a campaign will involve more than just rudimentary knowledge of Facebook and Twitter.

Prove you know the anatomy of each channel by mentioning the monitoring and engagement tools you utilize (Hootsuite, Buffer, Crimson Hexagon, etc.) as well as the analytics and reporting tools you’ve learned. Even if your future company doesn’t use the same software, you’re highlighting the breadth of your skillset and trainability.

Statements that show you play well with others

Working in social media doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily be staring at a screen all day, every day. Like many other jobs, you’ll often collaborate with other departments on projects and campaigns.

Show that you are a team player by describing how you contributed to a larger goal with sales, legal, finance and other teams.

Most importantly, you need to demonstrate your value. “It's not enough to show ‘skills’ and list a bunch of social media platforms,”.

Career / Five Interview Questions You Should Stop Being Scared Of by mailtimi(m): 4:58pm On Nov 06, 2015
With so much at stake when it comes to finding the right role, it stands to reason that improving your interview technique can be one of the most important things you will ever do.
1. What would your co-workers say about you?

OK, we admit it: some people are just good at interviews. Sometimes, in fact, regardless of their ability to do the job. You could call them lucky (also, probably a lot worse), but somehow they always seem to manage to think on their feet come interview time. If you’re one of these people, we’ve got bad news for you: this question is essentially your Kryptonite.

A classic interview question, this can also trip up the most modest of candidates, who doesn’t feel comfortable singing their own praises. However, always avoid reciting long lists of favourable-sounding adjectives (‘hard-working’, ‘reliable’ and, dare we say, ‘nice’). Testimonials are what recruiters really want.

Use real-life examples to try and give the interviewer a true picture of what you can do.

Right answer: ‘They’d call me dedicated, and goal-orientated. After a recent project, I was nominated for an award by my peers which represented some of the values the business strives for. I’ve also brought along a few testimonials, if you’d like to see them’

Wrong answer: ‘I’m not too sure, to be honest. My co-workers and I aren’t really on speaking terms’
2. What motivates you?

What’s known as a career goal question, the purpose of determining your motivation is surprisingly simple.

Essentially, a recruiter wants to know why you’re applying for the role, and what about it appeals to you. Will this position motivate you to do great work and keep your productivity high? Or are you just in it for the pay cheque?

Think about why you’re applying for the job and what excites you about it. Avoid excessive flattery when answering, and try and build a story as to why you’ve made it to this point in your career. Forming a narrative around your choices will be your key to success, so make sure you’ve properly prepared your story beforehand.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, it is ok to say money, especially for a sales role. Being target-driven never hurt anyone…

Right answer: ‘I went into IT straight out of university, and while I enjoyed helping people solve their computer problems, what really motivated me was when I got to work on projects analysing which software programs best met a company’s needs. I really love translating people’s requirements into technical solutions, and that’s what excites me about this position’.

Wrong answer: ‘I just really need a job’

Politics / Top Global Crisis, Boko Haram Activities Listed by mailtimi(m): 9:03am On Jan 01, 2015
The Boko Haram crisis has been listed as number eight on CCTV’s top 10 global crisis.
Boko Haram loosely translated as “Western education is forbidden”, but , with real name Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (People Committed to the Prophet’s Teachings for Propagation and Jihad) is a fanatical Islamic sect that has been waging war in the North Eastern part of the Nigeria since July 2009 when its leader, Mohammed Yusuf was killed. Yusuf is believed to have helped the then governor of the state, Ali Modu Sheriff win the governorship election in Borno State in 2007. A strain in the relationship between the former and latter , caused the sect which relatively practiced its unorthodox teachings in remote areas to go haywire, it is widely believed. On 26 July, security forces arrested nine Boko Haram members and confiscated weapons and bomb-making equipment.

Phones / Google To Encrypt Android Data By Default by mailtimi(m): 1:41am On Sep 21, 2014
Following Apple CEO Tim Cook’s declaration on Wednesday that Apple is unable to decrypt devices using iOS 8, Google let it be known that the next version of Android will shield data on devices more effectively. Android has supported user-controlled device encryption since the debut of version 2.3.4 (Gingerbread), with improvements over the years. But now Google plans to turn device encryption on by default. A company spokesperson told the Washington Post, “As part of our next Android release, encryption will be enabled by default out of the box, so you won’t even have to think about turning it on.” The next Android release is called “Android-L.” No specific release date has been announced, but Google intends to deliver the update before the end of 2014, possibly as soon as October. By turning device encryption on by default, Apple and Google are declaring their disinterest in surveillance-as-a-service. Government agencies often ask the companies to help them access data on smartphones seized in the course of investigations, when investigators cannot access that data on their own. When authorities make such demands in accordance with valid legal process, companies must provide whatever data they can access. Default device encryption means Apple and Google will be unable to assist authorities with data on devices, whether they want to or not.

Religion / Chris Oyakhilome's Lawyer Threatens To Sue Media Houses by mailtimi(m): 5:45am On Sep 04, 2014
Pastor Chris Oyakhilome through his through his lawyer, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) has threatened to seek legal redress against journalists and media house publishing stories about the divorce scandal he his embroiled in with is wife, Anita.

Portion of the statement read thus:

“The attention of our client, Rev. Chris Oyakhilome, and the church has been drawn to the wave of false, malicious and fabricated stories being published in the print and electronic media about his person, the church and a matrimonial cause between him and his wife," his attorney stated.

Sharply criticizing the recent coverage of the divorce proceedings, which the statement did not refute, the release claimed that publishers went so far as to fabricate claims that he had committed adultery against his wife, Anita. These contradict her claims that the leader of Christ Embassy Church had indeed been unfaithful during their "terribly degenerated" marriage, something she disclosed through counsel to Premium Times earlier Wednesday.

Characterizing the media's coverage of his wife's efforts to divorce him as “complete distortion of the facts in the pending proceedings in the United Kingdom”, the statement cited the coverage as "selfishly motivated" for political and financial advantage.

Oyakhilome's counsel further said the media's coverage was engineered to bring him and the church shame and ridicule, though his wife was the person who aired the allegations against him. Earlier today, Wednesday, Mrs. Oyakhilome even told Premium Times, through counsel, that the marriage had "terribly degenerated".

The statement also acknowledged freedom of the press, but quite contradictorily cautioned that further action will be taken to safeguard the image of the church and the pastor if coverage continued. "Be warned therefore that unless the concerned media houses desist from further publishing words and stories which are false and damaging of our client’s reputation and the church, we shall, without further recourse to the concerned publishers, promptly embark on appropriate legal machinery with a view to protecting our client’s reputation and that of the church."

Politics / Survivor Of Boko Haram Attack On Gwoza Police Training College Testifies by mailtimi(m): 6:20am On Sep 01, 2014
The widely reported Boko Haram insurgency attack on Wednesday 20th August 2014 at a Nigerian Police training college in Gwoza, Borno State left few survivors. Omereji Friday, a Rivers State indigene who was present at the scene of the bloody onslaught, attributes his own survival to Divine protection. Speaking at The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos, Nigeria on Sunday 31st August 2014, the mobile police officer explained that he was stationed in Nasarawa State when informed that a training exercise was to be conducted in Gwoza, Borno State. Before embarking on the journey, Friday, who spoke in pidgin English during his testimony, called his wife to inform her. “My wife nearly fell down,” he explained, stating she insisted he visit her before going on the exercise. Omereji’s wife warned him of the dangers of the area in light of the recent activities of Boko Haram insurgents but the policeman seemed unperturbed by the dangers. “We quarrelled in the house and she told me if I did not go to Synagogue Church first, there would be trouble,”he explained to the congregation. Reluctantly agreeing with his wife and not by means of any personal conviction, Friday decided to visit T.B. Joshua’s renowned church in Lagos, Nigeria before his journey to Gwoza Arriving in Lagos late on Sunday 17th August 2014, church activities at The SCOAN were about to cease. “I met one young man from South Sudan and introduced myself as a Nigerian police officer,” Omereji continued. Although the service had finished, Friday pleaded with his newly made foreign acquaintance to give him something from the church he could take with him for the journey. “He gave me the ‘Anointing Sticker’ which he was with and I put it in my pocket,” he continued. Arriving back home, Friday’s wife told him to promise her that he would keep the ‘sticker’ which bore the message ‘Let love lead’ around his neck next to his ID card at all times during the journey as she didn’t want to end up a widow. Arriving at the military camp in Gwoza on Monday heavily armed, two days of training exercises were conducted hitch-free. “On Wednesday, our ‘oga’ told us to go and drop our arms and ammunition at a certain place before the exercise.” According to Omereji, the policemen saw a helicopter hovering over their area on an apparent surveillance mission later on that day. They reported to their seniors but were told not to be alarmed. It was when the training exercise of that day was concluded and the policemen were back in their lodging that Boko Haram militants struck. Friday recalled the hellish incident: “Suddenly, they called us to grab our guns. If you see how rain used to fall, that was how the bullets were falling. The person next to me was hit by a bullet and died in my presence. I fell down and began crawling. Our dormitory caught fire. Five armoured tanks were approaching with sophisticated weapons.” He quickly remembered his wife’s words and clutched the Anointing Sticker he kept around his neck. “I began to shout, ‘God of T.B. Joshua, where are you? Come and save me.’ ” Bullets were raining around him but surprisingly none hit. “I crawled to the high wall of the camp. I saw an officer attempting to climb over hit by a bullet and die instantly.” The wall was higher than an ordinary jump could reach by human capacity. “As I prayed, I jumped and don’t know what pushed me up over the wall.” However, the danger was far from over. As Friday began to run, he heard the sound of yet more heavy artillery. People to his left and right were collapsing but the policeman kept running. Miraculously, he escaped to safety. “It was a warfront. I was the only person I know of who survived this Boko Haram attack,” he soberly concluded. “This Anointing Sticker is powerful!” In his comments, T.B. Joshua reiterated his previous assertion that Boko Haram was the challenge of Nigeria and not Ebola. He further warned that infiltration from foreign militants had already occurred within Boko Haram, hence their sophisticated weaponry. The prophet further released some alarming prophetic messages related to events to come around the world. He warned airlines not to fly over the volatile Russian and Ukrainian region, stating that he saw the crash of another commercial plane. He specified the European nation of Poland needed prayer, stating that calamitous events would soon unfold there. Joshua further stated that US President Barack Obama would soon be rushed to hospital over a health concern and should not undergo an operation. He warned United Kingdom to secure their country in the middle and ending of September in light of the recent security warning issued because of the threat of ISIS militants.

Politics / Military Operation To Recapture Seized Towns From Boko Haram Underway by mailtimi(m): 7:38pm On Aug 31, 2014
The Nigeria Army has launched an offensive attack to recapture Gwoza and 14 surrounding villages seized by Boko Haram in the last two weeks.

A top military source, who those not want to be named said: “Some active military operations are ongoing but we will not talk until we have regained the town and other villages. All I can tell you is that Nigerian troops are capable. They did it in Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, and other places. There is no basis for not dealing with the insurgents at home.”

“We have launched fierce attacks both on land and in the air. We are prepared to reclaim Gwoza from the insurgents who have become tired of Sambisa Forest because the terrain has become marshy”, the source added.

Responding to a question, the source noted that “Troops would have taken over Gwoza by now but the operation is tactical because we are sticking to the rules of engagement.

“We have discovered that the insurgents have been using most of their captives as human shield in launching attacks on troops and invasion of villages. But their antics cannot last”.

In a related news, five out of the twenty-seven policemen who went missing during the Boko Haram seizure of the town and attack on the Nigeria Mobile Police Academy in Gwoza, have rejoined their units unhurt.

The top echelon of the Nigeria Police remained optimistic that the remaining 22 police trainees would reunite with their units soon following the safe return of five others.

A source familiar with the development said: “Following the invasion of the Academy by the insurgents, some of the mobile policemen ran into the bush and they have been trying to find their path in the last few days.

“Do not forget that some of them are not used to the Gwoza terrain because they are not from the area. They also have to navigate their ways in such a manner that they will not fall victims of Boko Haram.

“Most often, those who survived Boko Haram attacks have been linking up with their different units through Adamawa State”, the source explained. When contacted, the Force Public Relations Officer, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu, said:

“Five of the policemen have returned safely to their stations. Some may have gone back but yet to officially report. “Let me assure you that we will recover the Academy in Gwoza from the insurgents, we are not giving in at all”, Mr. Ojukwu said.

Politics / Three Facts You Should Know About Ebola River by mailtimi(m): 6:14pm On Aug 31, 2014

The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) ravaging West Africa continues to receive global attention, having claimed 1,552 lives (as at August 28) since February when it broke out.

However, little has been said about the river after which the viral disease is named. Here are three facts about a river that has itself wreaked no havoc on humanity but has suddenly become the water body no one wants to bathe in.

1. EBOLA RIVER IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR EBOLA VIRUS

Since the outbreak of Ebola in August 1976, much scientific work has gone into combating the virus and consequently the disease. But little has been written or said about the river, and this is no coincidence. It is because Ebola River is not responsible for the outbreak of the virus. There are five Ebola strains, each having a different degree of fatality and breaking out at different locations of the world where the river is absent.

2. EBOLA RIVER IS A VICTIM OF EBOLA VIRUS

When we speak of Ebola, we often consider humans and some primates as the victims. But the ignominy that Ebola River now personifies has shown that victims of the disease are more than humans and animals.

Celebrities / Banky W Reveals Why Skales Was Kicked Out Of His Record Label by mailtimi(m): 8:14am On Aug 29, 2014

CEO of Empire Mates Entertainment, Banky W, has revealed the real reason why he dropped Skales.

Skales (Raoul John Njeng Njeng) was signed to EME in 2010, on a 3-year contract, and amidst a number of hit songs such as Mukulu, Take Care Of Me, and Komole, he had not truly risen to the top of mainstream Nigerian music, which made EME refuse to offer him a new contract after his previous one had expired. Banky W has revealed that he had creative differences, as well as a conviction, that Skales needed a new spark in his career, that was why he was let go.

He told Pulse.ng: “My disclaimer is that people tend to make things a lot more negative than they are.

“I have to say that we are very proud to have discovered Skales and his talent, and to have given him a foundation to begin to express himself as an artiste, and also the platform to release that music to the world.

“Recording deals are based on the number of albums or the number of years. The years have passed, and we haven’t gotten to the point where we could release his first album, but we built a bit of a buzz, but we just haven’t gotten to the album.

He continued. “And then I looked at it. Some of the greatest artistes you know, had to go through 2 or 3 different labels to really figure out what it is that they wanted to do. 50 Cent was famously on Columbia, then he eventually moved from there and went down to Dr Dre, and then to Interscope. And Alicia Keys was on 3, 4 different labels, Lady Gaga same thing.

“So sometimes an artiste, just for their own creative purposes, needs a new environment. And I think with Skales, when we found him, we said it’s like finding a young M.I. He’s a rapper, we are going to make this great rapping artiste, and he creatively decided to start changing that direction.

Foreign Affairs / Obama Throws Accusation At Kremlin, calls Russia Liars by mailtimi(m): 7:07am On Aug 29, 2014
US President Obama has said Russia “outright lied” spotting their continual denial of involvement and or military support for separatist rebel in Eastern Ukraine.

This accusation comes in the wake of satellite footage released by NATO showing what is heavily armed Russian troops operating in Ukraine,a claim which is alluded by Samantha Power US ambassador to the UN.

The US are expected to only continue placing stiff economic sanctions on Russia with president Obama saying the US”is not taking military action to solve the Ukrainian problem” dismissing any thought of military approach.

Vitaly Churkin Russian ambassador insists that the footage shows nothing but Russian volunteers and their presence is not covert, as” no one is hiding it”. He however blamed the Ukraine government for bringing chaos upon themselves citing their anti-people policies.

Shoes are a lady’s best friends. She fawns over them, adores them and takes good care of them like she would do for prized treasure. And that’s all well and good seeing as shoes can make or break an outfit. Shoes accentuate a lady’s features and add colour and style to any get-up. No wonder some ladies spend a fortune amassing a collection of shoes, not just for wearing, but also for the aesthetic value (just look at Imelda Marcos). Yeah, not everyone has the purchasing power to spend on shoes, but as a lady there are some shoes you must have least one pair of; these will finish up any outfit you put together. Pay attention as I show you around the shoes I believe every lady must have.

1. Classic ballet-type slippers. Or flat shoes as some people might call them. If you don’t have any shoes at all, you should have a pair of these. They are comfortable to wear and easy to walk in for everyday women. Slip into a pair of these when you’re heading to that 2-hour lecture or for that extra busy day at the office. Feeling extra stylish? Why not ditch the conventional black pair and go for a pop of colour with a bright red or silver pair of flats?

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has closed most of the country’s borders, stationing Ebola testing centers at the few points of entry and will implement preventive measures, she said.

The president also placed restrictions on public gatherings and ordered hotels, restaurants and other entertainment venues to play a 5-minute video on Ebola safety.

“No doubt the Ebola virus is a national health problem,” Sirleaf said in a statement. “It attacks our way of life, with serious economic and social consequences. As such we are compelled to bring the totality of our national resolve to fight this scourge.”
