geez*:

Very funny. How come some states in the US are know for certain things and not everything? Arkansas and Arizona are top agricultural states while Atlanta is best known for oil and gas. California is know for entertainment. A state can't be everything to everyone. I even doubt if a country can. This doesn't mean that a state wont have a bit if everything or most things. There are farms in Lagos but the biggest farms in the SW aren't in Lagos which is the commercial hub of Nigeria.

All states in the US can stand on their own as independent nations if they wanted to. They're food sufficient, have industry, have services, have their own educational outlets etc.
There is a thing called comparative advantage and that's fine, some states will have things they will do better than others and each state needs to find and emphasize that.
but if all states are farming, all states are industrialized and all states are tourist attractions all states prosper.

We under estimate and size and scope of our states. Ogun State as an independant country would be close to the size of ghana or kenya. It thus makes no sense for them to think small. If ghana has a airport, ogun should too regardless of what's happening in Lagos. If ghana has it's own industries, so should ogun, etc. We need to treat our states are competitive nations, not mini aspects of a federal structure because they are capable of being their own nations and there are free nations in this world that they're bigger and more important than on their own. I want the east to treat imo as one nation and anambra as another not see them as different pieces of an intergrated southeast because it allows one side to neglect certain aspects of development

in order to develop you need to pull up all sectors, not pull up some while your neighbor pulls up another.

Im more interested in seeing a milk factory in Ekiti and a milk factory in Lagos and this is what i want for the SE.
Co-dependence isn't integration. We live in the same nation, we're integrated. Integration and tribal unity gimmicks are used by politicians trying to expand their empire and I dont want igbo people to be susceptible to it.

There's no need to build something in one state to support 6 others. Each state in Nigeria is populace enough to be it's own nation and if you go to nations smaller than our states you will see that they provide their own facilities and still have space for export.

There are enough people in Ibadan and Lagos for them both to have their own cattle ranch and export to the world.

I don't even know what integration means in nigeria. Are we not the same nation? How can you integrate two states in the same country especially if they already speak the same language? what are you bringing together?
Every state needs to be strong enough to stand on their own and every leader strong enough to do the same. Godfather-ism and turning the south east into a 1 party state is a politicians wet dream and for that reason we should avoid it because only a self centered and evil element finds cause to 'rule' over others.
PDP is serving Enugu and Rivers well, at the same time AGPA is serving Imo well. The southwest had a worst experience with PDP. All of their governors were among the biggest thieves in Nigerian state history and they saw little to no development. Their wholesale acceptance of ACN is really a rejection of PDP.
but in a state where there was performance (ONDO) ACN was stopped in their tracks.

We shouldn't support a party because it claims to be igbo, lets keep our eyes open to the one that serves us the best.

Im sure we all have our ideas, i'd like to hear some. If you notice, none of mine were dependent on the government.
competition is our strength, lets capitalize on it. More importantly lets make the government a detail not a central point in development until it's ready to be serious.
Town counsels have done more for our development than most state governors in the entire nation.

Politics / Why Nigeria's Southeast Should Not Intergate by MajeOfficial: 10:22am On Dec 15, 2012
It has come to my attention that many of the positive achievements of the ACN in the western region has the rest of Nigeria considering tightened regional ties along the lines of the original federating units of the nation. Though the yoruba effort is commendible and represents a real and tangible development strategy, it is not the only way out of poverty. Most importantly, intergation of economically imbalanced elements has always proven to be economically troublesome for nearly all that have tired. We have the european unions current economic stagnation and decline as proof, and our own economically unbalanced union of regions called Nigeria as closer more tangible proof.

Though intergration can work, competition is the key. More importantly, Competition is the key for the east and has been for decades. Because of our unique nature, we should acknowledge culturally who we are, as opposed to trying to fit an alien mold of what is functional because before the war, the competitive nature of the east put it miles ahead of the rest of the nation, and it was that same competitive spirit that saw our rapid recovery from the war.

That being said, the detrimental nature of our competitiveness is there and haunts our ventures daily. It's with this in mind that we find an intelligent and effective way to channel our competitiveness.

1. The east must remain a competitive market for all political parties, no monolithic dominance of one. The reason is that if that one isn't in power federally, our entire region risks political isolation and further marginalization. Every political party must feel it has a stake and a chance in the east and thus if the east remains a competitive swing region we have complete control of the ball game. Parties will pander to the open igbo vote as opposed to giving up and leaving it in obscurity. Winning the igbo vote is also crucial and breaking down margins in other regions because the Igbo vote well represented in all states of Nigeria. If the igbo vote remains attractive, favors and patronage remain an option.

2. The east is a tale of many nations. The igbo man believe his village is his nation in every sense of the word. The concept of pan-igbo is very new, and there's nothing wrong with this thinking. It's for this reason that the igbo man will build a factory in his village, build a school in his village, and strive to see his village compete with any city in the world. The mentality of everyone chipping into one city and leaving the rest to squalor is alien to us and should remain so. If i continue to see Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Onitcha as another man's land, I'm more likely to build a private hospital in the land i can call my own. This is why though no one city in the east can claim complete dominance in all sphere, all can hold their own in self sustenance. This is the model followed by the Germans. All German cities are in competition with each other and thus it's not a nation defined by one city like England. The result is German is a richer and more balanced nation than England. When we see and Innoson raising in Nnewi, every city and village should be striving to build their own. If PH has an airport, i want to see one in Aba as well.

3. Open up to the world. We experience a serious drainage of human capital in every generation. We won't be able to stop this with worlds alone because our people want to be connected with the rest of the world knowing that spots with diversity and a cosmopolitan culture can breed many opportunities. I would like to see the cities of Igbo land open up to the world. I would like to see Mosques in Owerri and an Hausa Market, a China town, a little india, a little lebanon, etc. All of the worlds people's have different skills and specialities they bring to the table and it's a combinations of the worlds cultures that create world class cities. No nation develops in isolation. Our people leave and that's fine, we need someone to come in and fill the gap. The cities that have embraced cultural plurality in nigeria. Lagos, PH, Kano, Abuja, operate of a scale beyond that one those that haven't and always will. There should be at least one city in every state where you can see the races and cultures of the world.

4. formalization of business. We have the industry and commerce needed to develop. Lets formalize these cottage industries. give them access to banks, loans and stock markets so that they can expand at will. access to the world's vast financial pool is what separates westerners from africans, and as these industries grow lets look towards export to the rest of Africa. Igbo musicians are sadly better excepted outside of Nigeria than in Nigeria. P Square for instance came to the United states and it was 100 USD for a ticket. Dbanj came and it was 25 USD but in Nigeria they will patronize Dbanj as if he's the alpha and omega of Nigerian music. Though im a personal fan the truth remains, the rest of the country doesn't like to see us doing well. That's fine, and is their own problem. Lets export our products to the rest of Africa. Lets solidify contracts with the rest of the world where biases won't hold us back. Igbo land needs to be of the world, look beyond Nigeria.

These things are all possible and competition, not consolidation, is the key.

Owerri has a special place in Nigeria as a place where Hotels will flourish. It's in between major business cities (Onitcha, Enugu, Asaba, PH, Aba) all of which except Enugu lack quality hotels.
On top of that Imo state returnees are a huge source of income. If Imo is meant to be a tourist spot so be it. I hope he's adding attractions along side these hotels.

the #1 thing to run from in Nigeria is uncertainty.

Nigeria is a society that can be scary because you're not expected to know what comes next. Every election feels like that last. When you encounter police you don't know if you're going to live or die. You don't know when you'll have electricity and when it will go away. You can't go to court cause you're not guaranteed fairness. It's impossible to know anything because everything is such a gamble.
It's hard to success when there's no foundation to stand on. Anything you buy can be a scam or a fake. You don' know who's telling the truth because lies are so normal. You're essentially trying to build a mansion on top of water, so i sympathize with Nigerians in that respect that was certainty.

That's the #1 reason i would say someone has to leave. Anyone leaving to become a billionaire or millionaire over night will end up with a kilo of cocaine pulled out of his anoos rotting in a chinese prison

Freiburger: The OP just listed the English speaking countries and and stoped there. grin grin grin Why not say these countries are good for Nigerians what are no longer copable of learning new languages?

Nigerians worship the west because they were colonized by the English and the English made us praise and admire their specific anglo saxon traits. Nigerians make the mistake of thinking all countries have these traits, they don't. The countries i listed excel at rule of law and most importantly racial and religious tolerance and indifference. Though racism is there, the law will be on your side if you can prove yourself. They believe in a fair start for everyone and they're not so socialistic that it's impossible to gain wealth or escape poverty.

Nigerians value raw capitalism. They want a chance to start and finish where they feel their destiny deems. Scandanavia is great for example, but their culture dictates that people are given everything they need to survive but don't have a reason to built extraordinary wealth which is what nigerians like and want. You will have free health care, housing etc, but dont expect to become financially better off than you are now. These are the only countries better than the Anglo Saxon english speaking ones

the rest have cultural elements that unfavorable to the success of african immigrants. Racism, bad economic management, lack of rule of law, poor cultural assimilation, etc.
Even the vastly wealth Switzerland isn't a good choice, the immigrants there live in complete squalor and isolation.

When Nigerians go to places like Poland, Russia, Albania, China, Indonesia and find themselves thrown in prison for no reason with no trail and no means of escape or having to bribe their way through life they will realize there's not much of a difference between nigeria and these places.

stay in english speaking anglo saxon countries, they're open and it's easier to climb

I think that people leaving nigeria is best for nigeria because it's helping us get rid of a lot of criminal, hateful and unpatriotic elements. I think poverty beats down many people's ability to ration correctly and the guy that posted above me shows this, so it's going to be hard to speak so someone who is still in abject poverty like himself. May will say i'm being selfish, or 'dont want them to come' as most of our people do when I or any american born Nigeria tells them that they're wasting their time trying to come here. I figured I leave the truth out here because many of our people are dying, and ending up in prisons, more importantly committing unnesscary acts of desperation in the name of obodo oyibo while many that live here are trying to go back to Nigeria because they know the truth.

If you can make it in the US, you can make it in Nigeria

We too often attribute success to geographic location. While location is important for many things and some environments are more conducive than others, the US is not the place to come if you want to be rich, and more importantly if you want to be rich AVOID europe. The reason is because this is the land of the middle class. Going to school and working hard is going to land you in the middle class. You will live in a modest home, drive a modest car, and be able to cloth and feed yourself well. This is not rich. The problem in Nigeria is the middle class is rare so people don't know what it is.
Middle class people buy everything using loans for the bank. That's what you have to do in america. You don't own your home, you don't own your car, and you have to pay thousands for school after you finish. This is how many Nigerian Americans get 'trapped' in the US. Because they are middle class they can't pay off these loans quickly and it often takes decades to be debt free, but nearly all americans are in debt.
This is why many can't return as freely as they wish, and why many are dying from stress. In the US it's difficult to become rich for a black person. If you want to be rich here you start a business and hope it work, but there are so many businesses doing so many things that have been around for literally 100-50 years and are worth billions that it's hopeless to start because they will easily crush you.

Europe is even worst. Europe is a socialist system with very high taxes that keeps anyone from being too rich or too poor. You will live in comfort in the US and Europe but it's not a land of 'wealth', it's a land of order and function.

Those Nigerians that make it in the US or Europe are actually a rare and special breed. They have drive, a vision, opportunity and most importantly a plan. I will say that anyone with these traits will make it in Nigeria as well. The difference is your money goes further in Nigeria than it does in the US. A person worth 1 million USD in New York can still struggle to pay bills because they're so high. If you have 5000 USD in Nigeria you can live like Jay-z half a year.

Returnee Nigerians are Liars
Many Nigerians return from the west with sll types of clothes, new cars, and begin building homes in their villages. They create the illusion that they've 'made it', and use their return to flaunt their 'wealth' instead of helping their brethren. This is a lie. Don't believe them. These people know 2-3 years in advance they're going to Nigeria. It's then that they begin saving the money they will use to show off for December. I've know many that go to the bank and acquire loans so that they can buy objects they'll use to fake as if they're rich in Nigeria. Many will neglect their bills and debts so that they can keep up the image of someone that is rich in Nigeria. Many of the people in Nigeria flaunting are poor people.
This is the home of a Nigerian American i know

but they will behave as if they're Donald trump upon returning. This creates a false image that everyone in the Us, or even the majority of people have a lot of money. It's a lie. This is a very expensive place to live and most people are modest.

The Richest Nigerians are in Nigeria
As i said the place to look for wealth isn't in a new land. By the time you're done learning the customs and way things work here you'll be 50. You know Nigeria, you know the way it works, though few want to admit it you can make it in Nigeria. The richest nigerians in the world are from Nigeria, and don't bother themselves with the US. If you look at somebody like Dangote, Adenuga etc you will see they have one devious but consistent thing in common: connections to those in power. As a black person, and more importantly a Nigeria, you have to understand those in power are white and have no business bothering themselves with you. At least in Nigeria you can climb the social ladder more freely, you can't here. To become rich in America you need a great idea, something nobody has ever done before like an invention or a service and it has to make sense to the demand. If you have one of these....you'll make it in Nigeria as well.

Not Every Country is Rich, Be careful

Many people think any country with white faces is the US, and all European countries are good. BE CAREFUL this is a lie
Canada
US
UK
Australia
New Zealand

are the only country i would suggest for anyone. The rest are extremely dangerous and the people there have a hard time achieving anything due to poor economies and racism. Israel, Poland, Spain, Italy are all place that look nicer than Nigeria but suffer from the same unemployment and corruption. Many Nigerians feel they will get someone going to China not knowing that there are more unemployed Chinese than there are human beings in Nigeria. If you're not going to any of the countries on the list, don't waste your time. Many are going to places more corrupt and downtrodden than Nigeria like Russia where the poor remain poor for ever and the rich are rich forever. more importantly DO YOUR RESEARCH. I recently had a friend go to Yemen. Yemen is not only poorer than Nigeria but is one of the worlds more war torn nations. Many nigerians will go somewhere without knowing the name of the countries president. Not every oyibo country is 'ala beke'. Many might as well be in Africa. Be careful!

Don't come here for the wrong reasons.

If you want a quality education for the sake of knowing more (not getting rich), a stable consistent life, 24 hour power, stable employment, good health care, good infrastructure, and a life of routine and order this is the best place in the world to be. If you want to be extraordinarily rich, a 'big man/woman', relaxed, to have fun in life, have children that will carry on your name and culture, or even important back home, stay home. You can want all of these things but you can't have them all. Many Nigerians believe they can come here and enjoy the benefits without suffering the pitfalls, this isn't true. Most Nigerians in the west are stressed, unhappy, lonely, feel as if they don't belong, struggling, and have children that most likely won't take care of them when they're old. Many are very rich as well and have done well for themselves but they would have done the same back home. Even with 24/7 power supply you'll come to find that you'd rather be eating egusi in the dark because a lot of the west isn't worth it if you come for the wrong reasons.

Like i said, many have made it and this is a great place to live and raise children. It's not a place to become 'rich' but it's a good place to have a reasonable life without too much unpredictability. If you can't make it in Nigeria, you can't make it here, that's plain and simple and by the time you learn what it takes to make it here, it'll be too late. and again, be careful where you go, only a hand full of countries are better than Nigeria, i mean it.

That's the past. now is now. They're not going to begin planning nigerian cities that weren't planned.
All you can do is organize the unplanned portions and from here on work based on a plan. Major neighborhoods need to be torn down for sure and replaced with things that contribute to quality of life
and the residents relocated to new modern low income developments

but rusted roofs are a serious health hazard and this is why nigerians fall ill so often. Many drink water that comes from rain that comes from used roofs.
They wash their clothes in rust water, bath in it, etc and the end result remains rust is poisonous and destroys your heath.
plus it makes the city look ugly and if the city looks bad, people won't respect it. They're liter at will, and violate laws more.
Politics / Imo Security Force Launched (state Police?) by MajeOfficial: 1:07am On Dec 12, 2012

Imo State governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha has launched a special vigilante outfit christened ‘Imo Security Network’.

Inaugurating the outfit at the Ahijoku Convention center, Owerri yesterday, Governor Okorocha explained that the move is aimed at complimenting the efforts of the security agencies, Community vigilate groups as well as Traditional rulers who by the provisions of the Community government, are the Chief Security Officers in their respective Communities.
Said he; “Imo Security Network that is being inaugurated today is to compliment the efforts of security agencies and vigilante groups. They will also collaborate with the Traditional rulers whose positions as chairmen of the Community government Councils have placed them as chief security officers in their various Communities. These gentlemen will no longer live in their homes but in places that will be provided for them as barracks in nine locations across the State. They will introduce themselves to the people with phone numbers that will be dedicated for their operations and in any case of suspicion, they will be called upon for prompt response. Each team will be attached to a police man to ensure that they operate within the ambit of the law”

The governor further said that his administration will not tolerate any form of indiscipline, extortion or harassment of innocent citizens and stressed the need for a synergy and healthy collaboration between the newly established Imo Security Network and other security agencies in the collective fight against crime in the State.

According to him, the operations of Imo Security Network will include locating the hideouts of kidnappers and other criminals by combing the forests and uncompleted buildings in all the nooks and crannies of the State.

He however urged the people to join the government in the war against crime in the State by volunteering useful information that will lead to the arrest of suspected kidnappers and other criminals.

Earlier in a speech, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr Ifeanyi Nwachukwu said that Imo Security Network comprises 324 men drawn from the 27 Local Government Areas of the State and trained by the security department of the Imo College of Advanced Professional Studies [ICAPS] under the supervision of American Security experts.

Also present at the occasion is The Senior Special Assistant to the Imo State governor on Security [Administration], Barr Okey Okorocha and The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adisa Bolanta who was represented by the Assistant Commissioner of police [Operations].

1. to see family
2. business
3. faith

and those reasons alone. If 1000 people visit that mosque on a friday from out of town, that 1000 new customers for every merchant in town.
