The aggrieved soldiers at the Maimalari barracks besieged the headquarters of the Theatre Command in Borno State, shooting sporadically into the air on Thursday night following their redeployment.

Soldiers of an unidentified battalion in Operation Lafiya Dole have protested their posting to a location in the Theatre of Operation.


According to Channels Television, the aggrieved soldiers at the Maimalari barracks besieged the headquarters of the Theatre Command in Borno State, shooting sporadically into the air on Thursday night following their redeployment.

They cited nonpayment of allowances and poor equipment as reasons for their rebellion.


Some of the soldiers who spoke under anonymity recall how a whole unit that went for reinforcement when Marte was captured last month, perished under the superior firepower of the enemy forces.


The Media Coordinator for Operation Lafiya Dole, Colonel Ado Isa, confirmed the incident.


While blaming the protest on the soldiers’ minor admin/welfare, he said the issues were promptly addressed.


This protest is coming on the heels of a statement made by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno, that billions of naira meant for purchasing arms and ammunition could not be accounted for.

According to the NSA, the funds were released during the time of the last set of service chiefs but the current set could not explain the whereabouts of the funds or equipment.


No less than $1 billion was released for the procurement according to Monguno, a retired Major General.

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have shot dead a Nigerian Navy personnel, Faruk Yusuf, who was deployed to Onitsha in Anambra State.

The killing is coming one week to the wedding ceremony of Faruk, who hailed from Unguwan Sarki area of the Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.



SaharaReporters learnt that the police had launched a manhunt for the killers.

Anambra State has recently become notorious for killing uniformed personnel such as the police and the military, by suspected ethnic militias and allegedly by operatives of the Eastern Security Network.

The Nigerian Navy has not officially reacted to Yusuf’s killing, but it was learnt that some arrests had been made in connection with the incident.

A source in Onitsha familiar with the incident noted that the activities of the gunmen needed to be urgently curtailed.

He said, “Yusuf was posted to Onitsha in Anambra State amidst all the unrest in that region. He was preparing to tie the knot next week with his betrothed but his life was cut short by gunmen who waylaid him in Onitsha.

“The late Yusuf hailed from Unguwan Sarki area of Biu LGA in Borno State. There is tension as the military could embark on raids and reprisal arrests and torture and even killing. The situation in Onitsha is palpable because the military is going to strike back. The activities of the rampaging gunmen need to be curtailed.



“Killing someone just a week before his wedding is indeed very agonising and condemnable. This is a moment of great agony for the relatives, friends and family of the deceased. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

“The naval authorities in Anambra State have already launched an investigation into the murder. They are looking for the assailants and we are hopeful we will get them. This is indeed wickedness of the highest order by these gunmen. The cold-blooded murder of a military personnel will never be overlooked by the authorities,” another military source told SaharaReporters.

he paramount ruler of Iwo, Osun State, Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi has said that only the council of traditional rulers in Yorubaland can decide if there will be Oduduwa nation or not.

He said there are factors to consider before the agitation for self-determination of the Yoruba nation can be pursued.


Akanbi told SaharaReporters in an interview on Wednesday while reacting to a publication that quoted him as saying whoever from Yorubaland that does not vote for Bola Tinubu in 2023 is a bastard.

He said, “About endorsing Tinubu, I’m not a politician, so I don’t endorse people to vie for political seats. All I was trying to say was that Yoruba people should unite to vote for our own people if the opportunity presents itself. If you look at me very well, I have always wanted the unity of the Yoruba people.”

Reacting to the rising agitation for the self-determination of the Oduduwa nation, he argued that Yoruba will think of resources to sustain them among other issues before venturing into the process. He stated that only Lagos State has the capacity to be financially independent.

“Have you thought about the allocation of the civil servants? Have you thought about how to generate revenue to pay them? Have you thought about how to be financially independent? For instance, in Osun State, about N2 billion is needed to pay civil servants, have you considered that?

“Then, you will think of other states. We have six states in the South-West, it seems only Lagos State has the capacity. This agitation for self-determination calls for wisdom and consideration.”

About the relentless effort of the socio-cultural organisations at the forefront of the agitation, Oluwo of Iwo accused some of the members of pursuing their own selfish interest.

“The Afenifere has been politicised. It is only a few members among them that have the interest of the Yoruba at heart. Ask them if they have carried the traditional rulers along. In Yorubaland, if they truly know history and culture, they should know that it is the paramount rulers that have the final say.

“In their agitation for Oduduwa nation, have they carried the traditional rulers along? They have to adhere strictly to the decision of the traditional rulers in Yorubaland. I’m talking about the council of Obas in Yorubaland. There is only one council of traditional rulers, and whatever their decision is, is final.

“It is when the paramount rulers have come together to say this is where we are going. Unfortunately, the traditional rulers are not united. You will discover that this one says this, the other says that. We cannot achieve anything tangible with that. It is when the traditional rulers unite and unanimously speak, that is when we know that the Yoruba nation is ready.”
