The debate over Nigeria’s petrol subsidy has resurfaced with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent comments contradicting President Bola Tinubu’s assertion that the subsidy has ended. The core issue is that petrol, like any international commodity, has fluctuating global prices. Just as the dollar’s value changes, so do oil prices. Tinubu’s administration has not adequately explained this dynamic to Nigerians. Petrol costs about $0.72 per liter (around 1,100 naira) before transportation and import fees. With added costs, the local pump price could reach 1,250 naira per liter. Such a price is unaffordable for most Nigerians and would cripple the economy. Instead of a flat subsidy, which locks in a fixed price and forces the government to cover the difference, the administration should implement a “buffer.” This means adding 200-300 naira per liter to adjust for global price fluctuations without a drastic increase. This approach allows for price adjustments in line with global trends while providing some protection against sudden spikes. The government must improve its communication to explain these complexities to the public, preventing unrest and confusion. Even with domestic refining efforts, global crude oil prices will continue to impact local prices. Transparent and clear explanations will help manage expectations and avoid further protests. |
Tone deaf statements. Unnecessary statements. Goodluck Jonathan said he had no shoes. While Diezani was busy buying half of London. Buhari said he had only six cows, when Emefiele was busy raising capital to start his own personal CBN. |
This government is fooling themselves, This is just fodder for the masses Even 10 million dollars is chump change compared to what Emefiele looted. What is 2.4 million dollars !! Is that money ?? They are so bold with the theatrics and drama |
The box that made some people billionaires. |
Tamper justice with mercy. Give her monitored and supervised community service. Let her show up everyday and help the cleaners To sweep and clean the airport. If she refuses or fails then remand her. Banned from using any Nigerian airport for 6months- 1year this will teach everyone that airport access is a privilege, not a right. Lets make it a learning experience. And every week she should be interviewed to advise the youths not to do an act like that. |
No pranks in federal building. Do all your prank inside your house. |
The government will keep pretending they cannot see or hear about the increased rates of abandoned babies. All of a sudden its no ones responsibility From elected Councillors Local government chairman Commissioners deputy governor Governor senators house of reps ministers vice president President All these elected officials......BUT YET NOT A SINGLE PERSON IS TRYING TO ACKNOWLEDGE OR EVEN ADDRESS THE PROBLEM |
cococandy:I am not responsible for you feelings or perceptions. However, thanks for keeping it real and Thanks for reading my threads. ![]() |

abdsamad:You make valid points, studying the medicine is not the problem. Incentivizing the doctors to remain after graduating is the problem. Paying them more might not really be a good solution, because guess what doctors earned 11k naira 20 years ago, now those doctors earn around 200k naira i presume. No matter how much you pay them,if inflation and forex continue to do better than naira, they will continue to leave. You have to anchor them with another incentive, like paying for their school. I have seen these models work in different countries trust me. American doctors go to Saudi Arabia, Saudi pays off your mortgage in America, help with loan repayment, pay your children school fees, pay you good salary tax free. And this is very common in all the middle east countries. So just paying them more in Nigeria, will not solve the problem, we will be back to the same problem in 5 years max! |
abdsamad:If you pay 500k more, USA will pay 5000 dollars more, and then devalue your currency to $1= 2500naira. Thats what we are dealing with now, Nigerians will study Medicine even if it came with a loan We are not people to shy away from such. |

“The salary of Mr. President is N1.2 million a month. I’m sure some MDAs heads earn N5million and some N2 million a month. No public servant in Nigeria should earn more than Mr. President and the governor of a state. Elected National Assembly members earn N12 million and N8million respectively. All those monies some people alluded to are not their salary. They have operational costs and other expenses added to it. These monies were put into it by the National Assembly as logistics and they are paid from the system. We don’t have the power to checkmate that. Only the Nigerian public can challenge that.” The RMAFC is responsible for determining the appropriate remuneration packages for all public office holders, including the President, Vice President, Governors, Senators, and members of the House of Representatives. They conduct reviews periodically and make recommendations for changes in salaries, allowances, and other benefits. 1. Misrepresentation of Facts: Mohammed Shehu’s statements regarding the salaries of public officials, especially those of the Nigerian President and governors, have been called into question by several prominent figures, including Senators Shehu Sani and Kawu Samaila. If these senators have disputed the accuracy of Shehu’s claims, it suggests that his grasp of the facts is questionable, which undermines his credibility as a federal official. 2. Outdated and Archaic Views: Shehu’s assertion that no public servant should earn more than the President is an oversimplified and outdated viewpoint. In modern governance, remuneration should be based on the role’s demands, responsibility, and the individual’s qualifications. Many government agency heads manage large budgets and oversee critical national functions, justifying their higher salaries. Insisting that the President’s salary should be the ceiling could demotivate highly skilled professionals and undermine the efficiency of government agencies. 3. Irresponsible Public Statements: By publicly making sweeping and unfounded statements, Shehu has displayed a lack of professionalism and responsibility. His remarks not only misrepresent the reality of public service remuneration but also reflect poorly on his capacity to manage a sensitive and important federal office. 4. Disputes with Prominent Figures: Shehu’s willingness to dispute former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a respected elder statesman, and other figures like Senators Shehu Sani and Kawu Samaila, without providing concrete evidence or a solid foundation for his claims, indicates a tendency towards confrontation rather than constructive dialogue. This approach is unbecoming of someone in a position of federal authority. 5. Potential for Misinformation: If allowed to continue in his role, there is a risk that Shehu could further spread misinformation or mislead the public on critical issues related to revenue mobilization and allocation. This could have far-reaching negative consequences on public trust in the government and its institutions. 6. Impact on Tinubu’s Administration: The continuation of such behavior under President Bola Tinubu’s administration could erode public confidence in the new government. Allowing officials who have been publicly discredited and who continue to propagate potentially misleading information would not bode well for Tinubu’s efforts to establish credibility and effectiveness in governance. Mohammed Shehu should be dismissed from his role as Executive Chairman of the RMAFC. His outdated views, misrepresentation of facts, and irresponsible public statements are not befitting of someone in such a high-ranking federal position. President-elect Bola Tinubu must ensure that individuals who hold federal office under his administration are competent, truthful, and aligned with modern governance standards to foster trust and integrity in government.

drstranged:Have your heard of limited or provisional licenses ? Its similar to doing house job for a longer number of years.... Some other countries issue licenses without "certification" and give you a few years before the certification There are ways around your concern. I assume you are a dr from your moniker. |

The U.S. federal government is considering ways of squeezing Iranian oil exports amid heightened Middle East tension following Tehran’s vow to avenge the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Politico reports that a spokesman for the State Department said in comments that the department was looking for ways to further limit Iran’s revenues from oil exports, blaming the country for the escalation in the regional situation after Israel killed Hamas’ Haniyeh in Tehran. “As Iran continues to escalate tensions in the region, we will work with partners to further pressure Iran and reduce their oil exports,” the official, whom Politico did not name, said. “Sanctions evasion is very costly—paying middlemen, laundering money, and so on. We assess that the Iranian regime receives only a fraction of the revenue from its oil sales as a result,” the official added, acknowledging, however, that despite the sanctions Iran was expanding its crude oil exports. Indeed, earlier this year Iran’s oil exports hit a six-year high, at an average of 1.56 million barrels daily over the first quarter of the year. “The Iranians have mastered the art of sanctions circumvention,” Fernando Ferreira, head of geopolitical risk service at Rapidan Energy Group, told the FT in April. “If the Biden administration is really going to have an impact, it has to shift the focus to China.” China is Iran’s largest oil customer but it is not the only one. Reuters reported earlier this month that cargo tracking data had shown Iranian oil cargoes moving to Oman and Bangladesh. Last month, Iran’s Petroleum Minister Javad Owji claimed that Tehran is currently exporting its oil to as many as 17 countries. Iran’s crude oil production averaged 3.22 million barrels per day in July, the monthly Reuters survey found earlier this month. That level was the highest Iranian output tracked by Reuters surveys since 2018. By Irina Slav for Oilprice.com
