Omenlon: who is stopping who? why imports, what is wrong in encouraging those with licences to build refineries to build theirs. Come to think of it, who is stopping others from setting up their refineries? BUA is working on his own in akwa ibom, where are the " is our oil" business men and women, that aboki are taking over the business. You people should rest with una bad belle. There are a lot of closed refineries in USA. Why ? Because sometimes its cheaper to import than refine it locally.
So Nigeria deserves the right to keep both options on the table. We are not going to cancel imports and depend on just one refinery. Maybe when we have 10 refineries we can cancel imports.
If something happens to Dangote refinery and its out of function for 2 months due to repairs, where are we going to get petrol from. The importers have to keep their contacts to forestall and scarcity. As long as Dangote can bring petrol at a good price, he doesn't have to worry about importers. |

GEJDHERO: Importation of Petroleum products its seriously depleting our Foreign exchange reserve. Thats not how it works. Even if we buy from Dangote refinery, we will be paying in dollars or naira in dollars equivalents. Because crude oil is an international commodity traded in dollars. These dollars pays the salary of Nigerians and also is the money they give all the states as federal allocation. So you are asking Dangote's business to pay the salary of all Nigerians, buy buying all out crude oil and then the government gives him back the money by buying petrol from him. It feels incestuous. They can assign him a reasonable quota but energy independence has to be maintained. |

TheBizGenius: I would not have responded to your comment but people are already endorsing and validating it.
Your comment is wrong. And I'm guessing your bias is because you are not a "learned" business man.
Every business on earth seeks to eliminate ALL competition using business strategies. It is a course in business school.
Government steps in if the company is stifling other businesses on its level. For example, Mr. Biggs can be indicted for monopoly against Tantalizers but not against bus stop foofoo sellers.
In Aliko's case, is there a refinery it is creating a monopoly against? It can't be against importers. You can't indict VAVA, a Nigerian furniture maker, for trying to ban importation of home furnitures even if the importers are crying.
If you must explain to people, do so from the point of acquired expertise not opinions. Competition by performance is not the same as competition by exclusion. Yes, businesses aim to outperform rivals, but cartels aim to remove choice itself, often by influencing policy, choking supply channels, or pressuring regulators. Business school teaches competitive strategy; it does not teach regulatory capture.Importers are not “lesser competitors” like roadside vendors, they are functionally equivalent participants in the same market layer until policy intervenes. A refinery lobbying to restrict imports while becoming the dominant local supplier is not innovation; it is vertical foreclosure risk, a textbook antitrust concern globally. The furniture analogy fails because furniture is non-strategic. Fuel is systemic infrastructure, pricing, access, and continuity affect inflation, mobility, and national security. That is precisely why regulators exist and why independence matters. Finally, pointing to selective outrage undermines the commenter’s credibility: consistency is the minimum standard for moral authority. You cannot claim anti-corruption while benefiting quietly from distorted systems, then weaponize righteousness only when regulation resists you. This is not about disliking success. It is about defending market structure. When power tries to rewrite the rules mid-game, regulation is not interference,it is the game itself. |

Do you think Farouk & co don't own refineries or been major stakeholders in Malta and elsewhere, a strong reason why Nigerian refineries will never work? Please, I am more enlightened to be deceived by the monopolistic card play on Dangote because he has never stopped anyone from establishing the same business. Dangote has been the only private business man to tackle the cabals in the petroleum sector by establishing the business in Nigeria instead of establishing it elsewhere and work with Farouk to support importation. When you fight corruption, the same corruption will fight you back!! Chai.. Why is Farouk, Dangote's problem all of a sudden ? Have you asked yourself this ? Farouk has not denied Dangote from selling his petrol in Nigeria. If Dangote brings his products to the market at a better price. No one will buy from the importers. So why is Dangote worried about the importers? Unless he has an ulterior motive, which is chase away all the importers and jack up the prices, later. A country the size of Nigeria cannot hand over its energy needs to 1 single private businessman. We have to have open options. The same way a house has NEPA and Solar and generator. Nigerians like you said no. In 2005, the then government too wanted to remove subsidy Nigerians like you said no In 2012, there were sixty licences for refineries existing But because Nigerians like you said no, all of them could not get loans from banks and other financial institutions and also could not attract investors, because no one is going to invest in a refienry that is forced to sell subsidsed fuel. Dangote was the only one, and I am not praising him...who got financing not because government favored him, but because the banks knew that if he failed to make a profit from his refinery, and defaulted on his loans, they will just take their money back from his other businesses via AMCON. All this talk that you are saying dangote wants to be the only one, know that Nigerians like you brought it on yourself. If you had supported the removal of subsidy in 2012...and you did not need to support GEJ to do so, there is a difference between supporting sane economic practice and the party that produces them....by now there would have been at least two other refineries competitng with dangote. Even now, BUA, and at least one other person are putting up refineries and at least two people have refineries in the pipeline. Dangote is in a position to have us as his mercy because you Nigerians kept on supporting subsidy without realizing that you were doing yourself long term. You sound like a thoughtful person from your analysis. Nigeria is not without blame, I agree with you. But we should not jump from frying pan to fire. Have you asked yourself. Why is Dangote insisting on being the sole marketer to Nigeria ? If his petrol is being produced at a competitive price he can sell to any country in the world. Crude oil prices are also a world standard. He can purchase crude from any country in the world. His insistence to sell to Nigeria all their petrol demands only shows he knows he will get away with a lot as Nigerians sole petrol seller. He is hell bent on making Nigeria his only customer. Refinery profit margins are very low all over the world. A lot of USA refineries have closed because its cheaper for them to import petrol than refine it in the USA. So how are we sure Dangote's refinery is even profitable ? Is that why he is fighting tooth and nail to secure a customer that wont ask too many questions ? |

Willie2015: Huaxin just completed a take over of Lafarge...that is a global brand that's way bigger than Dangote Cement. The US govt sued Microsoft for monopoly practices in the 90s. FG can control Dangote if they suspect monopoly practices., that's the global practice. BUA refinery is coming up to compete with Dangote in that sector. That's what they called healthy competition, we expect other refineries to come up with time.. It simply bad economics to grant several import licenses to kill local production in the name of competition ..that's a dumb strategy if you have good knowledge of basic economics. Lastly, What you have failed to explain how you intend to control those cabals thats milking Nigerians from those import licenses that's adding no value. At the end of the day, the price and consumer preference should determine the market. Unless Dangote is trying to establish a monopolistic cartel. Which is what he is doing. After he is done chasing all of them away.....guess what ? He will raise the prices. Dangote shouldn't be worried by the import licenses, he should bring his petrol to the market cheaper. If he is able to do that....Farouk and co can go and buy the expensive imported petrol if they like. But Dangote wants to kill all competition form the jump. In a country as large as Nigeria, energy is like security. You cannot let one single man sell petrol to 250 million Nigerians. Thats a dangerous precedence. |

Nigerians are watching as Dangote is openly trying to turn petrol supply into a cartel
Business vs. Cartel
A business is built by competing. It creates value by offering better products, prices, or services, and it survives only as long as customers freely choose it. Regulation is accepted as part of the social contract, and failure is always possible.
A cartel is built by eliminating competition. It seeks profit through control, collusion, intimidation, regulatory capture, or barriers that prevent others from entering the market. Regulation is treated as an enemy, not a safeguard.
If Dangote is the corruption Czar he claims to be, Where was this energy when he was getting subsidized dollars from Emefiele. Who is the most corrupt Nigerian in modern times. Building a 750-Unit estate with stolen funds. Dangote did not report him to ICPC. They did business together amicably.
Dangote refinery was built on subsidized dollars. Every Nigerian is technically an owner in that refinery because national revenue was used to subsidize the dollar. In China, the government would have nationalized at least 30-40% of that refinery. Because the government gave you cheap dollars to construct it. Refinery was built with dollar at 350naira. But the government let him have the refinery without milking any concessions in petrol pricing out of him.Anybody trying to build a refinery today will have to do it at 1500naira to a dollar. There is no way you can compete with Dangote refinery. Instead of keeping quiet and eating his national cake. He also wants to go after all the the importers. |

Lukuluku69: The US pay for those imports with the currency they printed, they are in control of and have the power of supply over. Is this the same with Nigeria?
We have been told severally (unless it is a lie) that importation put a strain on the value of our own Naira which in this case is what will happen if we cam produce locally but choose to buy from abroad.
Every Nation protect her local industries reason why the US under Trump have been imposing Tariffs on almost everything entering the US.
I am not siding with Dangote here but rather with Nigerians and Nigerian Economy.
Tens of Modular Refineries are coming on board soon. Continued importation will stifle them all. Dangote is seeking to establish a petrol "cartel" not run a business. When he is done getting rid of the importers, you think he will accept Naira from the government ? Forget all the jingoism and catch phrases they are selling Nigerians. Crude oil is an international commodity. Its dollars all over the world. Petrol too is the same. If Dangote can produce at cheaper prices, why is he worried about the government. He can sell to Europe or even other African countries. But he wants to establish a cartel and make Nigerian Government his only customer. After he has succeeded in doing that. Then he will start playing with the prices. Depending on whether he likes the government or not. If he decides to raises prices 1 month to election. Whoever is in power might lose elections and if he lowers the price for one month only he would get votes for whoever is in power. THAT'S TOO MUCH POWER FOR ONE BUSINESS MAN. Energy has to be independent. |

I thought what those wailers should be doing is developing and seeking support to build a Refinery or buy out NNPC Refinery and compete. These your argument does not hold water Building a refinery that only runs on government patronage is not a business You are seeking to establish a cartel. Know the difference between the 2. If Dangote really built a functional and profitable refinery He wont be so bothered about the government He will buy his crude oil and sell his petrol with out without Nigerians But he hunger and insistence on having the Nigerian government buy from him alone, will leave room for monopolistic practices, price fixing etc. You might not see it now but that's surely his plan down the road. STEWpid: C h a i..The writer is biased!! A suspected paid agent by Farouk Ahmed!!
You said Dangote is angry that Farouk opposed the 15% import tax duty on importation of refined products just because he wants to monopolize the petroleum industry?
Our refineries have refused to work because of corrupt people like Farouk who wants soft landings for fuel importers than making local refineries work so that we will even forget about importation of fuel.
Na we get this crude oil for God's sake!!!
So Farouk wants a lower tax on importation of refined petroleum products so that Nigeria, a country that is richly blessed in the same petroleum resources, will be solely dependent on imported petroleum?
Farouk is against that high import tax because he is also part and parcel of those importing the fuel to the country at the expense of the masses as against the drive for functionality of our refineries that has been a monumental disgrace, gulping billions of dollars quarterly in the name of turnaround maintenance that hasn't yielded anything other than embezzlement/corruption.
Chai.. NaijArea.. When you fight corruption, the same corruption will fight you back,, Farouk is not the problem. How many years has farouk been in that position ? How many years have our refineries not been working. Farouk was still in school when our refineries stopped working. Dangote wants to monopolize the whole energy sector of Nigeria, or at least have everybody answerable to him. This from a security standpoint is not a wise idea. There should be open channels for petrol imports. These channels cant be kept corruption free. But there should still be open channels. There is no country in the world that buys its petrol from one private business man !! The minute you hand over the power in the energy sector to Dangote, he will raise the prizes of petrol and look the other way. If Dangote is producing Petrol at a good price, why is he worried about levying the importers. So because Dangote is a billionaire, he should wait, open his eyes and allow his investment to be destroyed. Dangote said his tanks are filled with refined Petrol, his production can meet local demand, at which point the PIA said an embargo should be placed on importation of petrol ( When domestic production meets local demand) yet the Farouk kept issuing import license. That's how they killed the multi billion Naira Textile industry, Nichemtex gone, Nigeria Textile, Kaduna Textile etc all gone because of this type of policy. I like Dangote style, he won't wait to be destroyed. In business, you cannot force a buyer to buy or force a seller to sell. Dangote's refinery is a private business. Its only in a drug cartel with monopoly, that you can dictate 100% who is the seller and who is the buyer. Dangote trying to force Nigeria to buy petrol from him or sell crude to him is slowly taking the shape of a cartel. If his prices are low and remain low, he does need to beg for buyers....But if he plans to sell at high prices then he needs a buyer that will keep buying regardless. That is what he is doing now. He is trying to force Nigerians to be his 100% customers by eliminating all other sellers, after he is successful doing that he will now raise the prices. Same thing was done when he started selling cement. The government has to make sure he has competition, |
