Politics › The Assisted UK Dying Bill: A Hidden Death Sentence For The Vulnerable? by malali(op): 12:12pm On Nov 29, 2024 |
The UK’s proposed Assisted Dying Bill, aimed at terminally ill patients with less than six months to live, opens a Pandora’s box of ethical dilemmas. Its proponents tout it as compassionate, but let’s strip back the veneer: this isn’t just about patient autonomy—it’s about cutting costs.
Who decides someone has six months left? Predictably, minorities, already underrepresented in equitable healthcare, could find themselves disproportionately affected. The same government balancing nursing home budgets can’t credibly promise fairness in deciding life or death.
For Nigerians in the diaspora, this law brings chilling questions. After decades of paying into the system, a hospital stay in later years could lead to uninvited “assessments” of your life’s worth. Is this healthcare or quiet culling?
The moral danger? A slippery slope to normalizing death over care. The economic benefit to the state is undeniable—but at what human cost? It’s time to ask who truly benefits.

Politics › Brief Summary Of The Proposed Nigeria Tax Bill by malali(op): 11:41am On Nov 29, 2024 |
The Nigeria Tax Bill introduces sweeping reforms aimed at simplifying tax laws, reducing burdens for individuals and businesses, and boosting government revenue.
Key Highlights
1. Personal Income Tax (PIT) • Exempts annual incomes below ₦800,000 (pro-poor). • Progressive rates: Top earners (₦50m+) taxed at 25%, while rates for low and middle incomes decrease significantly. • Start-up employees and ICT professionals enjoy tax exemptions. 2. Corporate Taxation • Small businesses (under ₦25m turnover) exempt from corporate taxes. • Medium and large firms’ rates reduced from 30% to 25% by 2026. • Consolidates multiple levies into a single “Development Levy” (declining from 4% to 2% by 2030). 3. Value Added Tax (VAT) • Incremental increases from 7.5% to 15% by 2030, but essential goods (e.g., food, medicine) remain exempt. • VAT sharing prioritizes states/localities where goods/services are consumed, not headquarters’ location. 4. Capital Gains Tax • Exemptions for personal property sales and injury compensation up to ₦50m. • Higher gain thresholds for taxation, promoting fairness. 5. Mining and Petroleum Sectors • Streamlined royalties for petroleum and minerals. • Incentives to encourage natural gas investments. 6. Stamp Duty and Harmonization • Clarifies and standardizes taxes on 47 dutiable instruments.
Advantages
• Pro-Poor Focus: Low-income earners and minimum wage workers are shielded. • Business-Friendly: Encourages small business growth and reduces corporate tax burdens. • Simplified Taxation: Less confusion through consolidation of taxes and clear exemptions. • Revenue Efficiency: Better tracking of high earners and sectors through financial disclosures.
Disadvantages
• Increased VAT: May indirectly raise living costs despite exemptions. • Compliance Pressure: More stringent reporting for businesses and banks. • Implementation Challenges: Shifting to a consumption-based VAT derivation may be complex.
The bill is seen as a transformative step to balance fairness and fiscal responsibility, though critics worry about its long-term effects on inflation and administrative enforcement.

Ndume did not clash with the FIRS Chairman, this caption is vilifying him.
He is telling the deputy senate president to stop sneaking very important items on the itnerary of te senate last minute.
It looks likes the deputy senate president, adds important stuff to senate hearing last minute, knowing fully well not all the senators are present.
This is a common trick and fraud perpetrated by the senate. When they have something controversial to vote or pass, they do it behind the senators that will oppose.
Ndume being a seasoned senator knows all these tricks and is telling the deputy senate president to let other senators know ahead of time the magnitude of what he wants to add as a supplementary item to the list.
I FULLY SUPPORT SENATOR NDUME ON THIS ISSUE. |

epainos: If I had known what I know now, I would have gotten a lot further than I do now. Nonetheless, I am pleased with my success.
What we study does not matter. Just get any degree, and you can navigate your way through. The only advantage we have is that we know what is currently trending, and even if we do not study it in school, we can easily learn it. Why? Your first step should be to find a job and earn a small income in your 20s after leaving school. Become an expert in what is popular and make a living from it.
With your savings, you should do what rich men do to increase their wealth, which includes:
1. Start a business. Look for disruptive technology and innovation to solve the problems that the majority of people face, and you will make money. You may start a business and find yourself in the same league as salary earners, which is something you want to avoid. This is why you must be prepared before starting a business. And you prepare by first gaining experience earning money elsewhere and learning business management.
2. Invest in both paper and digital assets. Learn to trade or find an expert who can do it for you. Forex, futures, stocks, crypto, etc. There are three types of trading strategies: day trading, short term trading, and long term. Most people enter long term when they are unable to read charts well. Therefore, you should look into stocks and crypto. The issue is that S&P 500 and it's like generates around 18% turn over presently annually, while digital assets give like 150% ....but it is a double edged sword. You must understand the difference between gambling and investment. This is one area all rich men go into. Elon is currently working on making the doge currency stronger. Hmm. This should teach you something about digital assets.
3. Real estate: This area is very technical because there is not as much money as there used to be, but if you understand it, you will make a lot of money. The annual rental strategy is a nonsense business. I can not believe Nigerians are still building to collect annual rent. Lol...when monthly rent is no longer satisfactory in most places. The new deal involves short-term leases. It is a lucrative business. Or you get some money, buy a house, and then resell it after remodeling it to maximize your profit.
These are the three areas you should focus on. If you do not do any of the above, you will not be rich. You van be comfortable. As a result, if you have not yet begun, your first task is to become an expert in a trending business area and sell your products or services for a fee....or you use your knowledge to find a job and earn a reasonable salary.
If you can not find a good source of income, you will be stuck for a long time, believing witches and wizards are after you. Then you will have to urgently consider relocation, which is why you should seriously consider JAPA. Of course, starting with a security job, UBER driving, or any other casual job is a good way to get started. Then you can start improving and increasing your wealth from there.
Again, look into a way to make 1 instead of the 0 you are currently making. You can multiply one.
Good luck to everyone. Smartest post i have read in Nairaland in the last decade. Question ? What decade of life are you ? |

Kemi will never be welcomed in Nigeria with her stance and utterances.
Kemi will never be as British as she delusionally wants to be.
Kemi will not be welcomed in Isreal as a Jewish by marriage.
She is playing a losing game. She has 250 million people in Nigeria free of charge to support her, based off her ancestry. But in her race to impress the white man. She is rejecting all of us.

miketayo: you are not being honest here or you are just ignorant. We got most of our debt canceled during OBJ and got more canceled after, we get interest-free loans every now and then, and we got looted funds from past leaders too but what happened to it? Begging is another reason other nations don't take us seriously, a wealthy country that won't stop begging and borrowing. Countries with far less resources have done better (read about Singapore). Honestly, you sound like someone that hasn't been to the airport, and you claim to have passports of 1st world countries. lol Stop looking at Nigeria as a charity case, when we know we have enough to fix it. This argument oversimplifies complex national failures and ignores the systemic barriers to progress: 1. Debt Relief and Looted Funds: Debt cancellations and recovered funds were mismanaged due to weak institutions and persistent corruption. Blaming others doesn’t absolve poor leadership. 2. Begging and Borrowing: While embarrassing, it stems from poor governance and failure to harness resources. Comparisons to nations like Singapore overlook stark differences in leadership, discipline, and vision. 3. Airport Anecdotes: This critique is condescending and irrelevant. Nigeria’s core issue isn’t “begging” but leaders who lack the will to reform. Mockery solves nothing. |
Politics › Re: UK Can’t Handle The Influx: Kemi Badenoch Promises Tougher Immigration Crackdown by malali(op): 10:16pm On Nov 28, 2024 |
kinguwem: We don't need to take treatment for other people's headache. They have a problem and they are out to solve it. We've problems but instead of solving them, we prefer to run elsewere to join others in solving their problems. Unrestricted immigration results in overpopulation and its problems: increased crime rate, overstretching of public utilities etc. There where things work, politicians discuss problems and proffer solutions before getting into office unlike here where a leader starts learning the problems and forms several committees to study the problems before thinking of solutions. Slave trade was abolished some centuries ago but we still believe it's why we're not progressing. our problems are tied to massive corruption, nepotism, sectionalism (ethnic, religious etc.), religious fanatism & other terrorist and criminal vices. The question is, why does a Nigerian sell is property, withdrawn is live savings and borrow money to run to his former colonist? Obviously we have serious problems. Let's concentrate on our problems and allow others to solve theirs. This argument is shortsighted and fraught with logical fallacies: 1. Oversimplification of Immigration Problems: Crime and public utility strain result from poor governance, not merely immigration. Countries with robust systems manage immigration effectively. 2. Misdirected Focus: Blaming Nigerians who seek better opportunities abroad ignores systemic corruption and lack of opportunities at home. Addressing push factors like unemployment and insecurity is crucial. 3. Colonial Context Ignored: Dismissing the long-term effects of colonization is historically inaccurate. Neo-colonial exploitation persists, affecting developing economies. 4. Solution Aversion: Simply pointing fingers at corruption and religion without actionable plans perpetuates stagnation. Leadership accountability is key. |
Politics › Re: UK Can’t Handle The Influx: Kemi Badenoch Promises Tougher Immigration Crackdown by malali(op): 10:13pm On Nov 28, 2024 |
XAUBulls: Kemi's submissions are largely correct here. Back in the day when Kemi's parents lived briefly in the United Kingdom and then gave birth to her in 1980, the unbridled immigration leading to overpopulation and unemployment wasn't there. But within the last 25 years, illegal immigration has gained momentum in the United Kingdom thereby hampering the socioeconomic lives of existing legal immigrants and British citizens. I remember that folks of Nigerian descent used to fly regularly on holidays, for studies or business trips from Lagos Airport into Gatwick Airport OR Heathrow Airport in London via Nigeria Airways and British Caledonian Airways from the late 1970s right into the 1980s and folks of Nigerian descent were respected in the UK as big spenders. These were the things I personally experienced back in the late 1970s right into the 1980s till British Caledonian got subsumed into British Airways in 1988.
In the grand scheme of things, NO country (Nigeria included) would allow such irresponsible illegal immigration and overcrowding in the name of being politically correct and this is why Donald Trump is also going to do the same by embarking on one of the largest deportations of illegal immigrants in U.S. history from 2025.
Last but NOT least, Kemi is married to a British Jewish banker (who is about her age in the early 40s) who incidentally had worked in Nigeria before their paths crossed in the United Kingdom, Kemi is NOW fully an integral part of the UK society by marriage to a British Ashkenazi Jew, therefore it's WRONG to accuse her of betraying Nigeria. Once a British-Yoruba or Nigerian-American woman has chosen to marry a White man and integrate into his country and have biracial children for him, then she has EVERY right to seek and fight for what is BEST for her children, family and the immediate environment she lives in against high crime rates, unemployment, hyperinflation, etc.
My ONLY red flag observation about Kemi is that in one of her videos, she was "trying too hard" to make a convincing argument against some form of reparations which she said was blackmail, BUT in reality, there were fundamental human rights violations in some countries such as Kenya that British colonialism took place. The French colonial rule and Belgian rule in the Congo were even WORSE than the British Empire's rule. She'll have to avoid overzealousness, tone down her words and think deeply before saying anything that would backfire on her down the road so that she doesn't inadvertently burn boths sides of the bridge. Period. This narrative is riddled with flawed arguments, historical inaccuracies, and oversimplifications. Here’s a critique: 1. Romanticized Nostalgia: The assertion that Nigerians were universally respected as “big spenders” in the UK during the 1970s-1980s overlooks systemic biases and challenges faced by immigrants. Wealth does not equate to societal respect or integration. 2. Immigration Misconceptions: Linking illegal immigration to socioeconomic decline oversimplifies complex global trends. Historical data shows economic struggles often stem from government policies, not migration alone. 3. Personal Marital Defense: Kemi’s marriage is irrelevant to critiquing her policies or arguments. Reducing her identity to whom she married distracts from substantive issues. 4. Reparations Argument: The mention of colonial abuses in Kenya, Congo, or elsewhere undermines any dismissal of reparations. Empires extracted vast wealth—acknowledging that isn’t “overzealous.”
Your narrative unintentionally conflates unrelated issues and ignores nuanced realities. Facts, not anecdotal nostalgia, should guide such discussions. |

But this is not the case, her parents immigrated she got their papers so let it be. Hypothetically, if 300 million people passed the background check and are eligible to be granted a visa to the UK, should they all be given? I have been saying this long before I knew there was someone called Kemi. it's the same reason we had Ghana must go, every country has its limit, and if the UK said they are nearing theirs respect it. If they really want to help us, they would give us interest free loans, they would set up non for profit establishment in Nigeria. Not accuse us of being dirty and poor when we knock on their door for assistance to work and earn a living. miketayo: Well I am not disappointed, you backed up your initial long gibberish writeup with a dumb shorter one. Which is easier to manage, a group of 10 or a group of 100 people? This is not about blaming immigrants or about preventing Nigerians (obviously your fear), but allowing the right immigrants in by limiting the numbers and conducting a thorough check on who is allowed into your country. Go read what Poland and Hungary are doing which is working for them, Germany is regretting opening its borders and is deporting people anyhow. Not every immigration policy is about Nigerians, that is your fear Her parents are immigrants, not her. what generation is irrelevant. LOL....My fear ? I am a Nigerian. I also have a few passports.(First world countries). I remain proudly Nigerian. I don't mistake my passport privileges to me not being an immigrant. I would never bad mouth Nigerians till i die. My ancestors were buried in various places within Nigerian just like Kemi's. If they were cherry picking immigrants when kemi's parent went to giver birth to her in UK. They wouldn't have picked them. They don't discriminate when looting politicians, loot millions to pour into the UK economy via real estate. When they do the Visa interview, is that not enough back ground check ? What else do they want in a background check ? Stool sample ? or DNA ? Conducting a thorough check is dog whistle for discrimination and racism. Sometimes its good to think independent of these politicians. God gave you your own brain. Dont use Kemi's brain to decide between good and Bad. |

Throughout history, stronger empires have fone far worse than what britain did to those they colonised. Can you run to the rich Arab countries and talk this nonsense? Good points you have raised. But thats the whole neo-colonization we are talking about. Keir Starmer (prime minister) was recently accused of collecting more than 100k pounds in gift. Which he quickly had to account for. But the british authortieis look the other way when our politicians come to North London to purchase houses that cost 5 million pounds, knowing fully well their salaries are not even up to 1000 pounds. The day Keir Starmer buys a house in Maitama above his salary and income he will be removed from office in less than 24hrs. |
