Pfizer 'probed Nigerian official' Leaked cables say drugmaker investigated Nigerian attorney-general for corruption to persuade him to drop legal action. Last Modified: 10 Dec 2010 09:01 GMT Pfizer told the Guardian that the statements purportedly contained in the leaked cables were false [GALLO/GETTY] US drugmaker Pfizer hired investigators to find evidence of corruption against the then Nigerian attorney-general to convince him to drop legal action against the company over a drug trial, the UK's Guardian newspaper has reported, citing leaked US diplomatic cables. Nigeria's Kano state sued the world's largest drugmaker in May 2007 for $2bn in damages over testing of the meningitis drug, Trovan, which state authorities said killed 11 children and left dozens disabled. The Guardian reported on Thursday that a memo published by the WikiLeaks whistleblowing website referenced a meeting between Enrico Liggeri, Pfizer's country manager at the time, and US officials suggesting that the company did not want to pay to settle two cases brought by Nigeria's federal government. "According to Liggeri, Pfizer had hired investigators to uncover corruption links to federal attorney-general, Michael Aondoakaa, to expose him and put pressure on him to drop the federal cases," an April 2009 cable from Robert Tansey, of the US embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, said. "He said Pfizer's investigators were passing this information to local media," the cable read. "A series of damaging articles detailing Aondoakaa's 'alleged' corruption ties were published in February and March," the cable said. "Liggeri contended that Pfizer had much more damaging information on Aondoakaa and that Aondoakaa's cronies were pressuring him to drop the suit for fear of further negative articles," it said. Legal settlement Pfizer and Kano's state government signed a $75m settlement on July 30, 2009. Aondoakaa was removed from the position of justice minister in February this year by Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria's president. In a statement to the Guardian, Pfizer said: "The Trovan cases brought by both the federal government of Nigeria and Kano state were resolved in 2009 by mutual agreement. Pfizer negotiated the settlement with the federal government of Nigeria in good faith and its conduct in reaching that agreement was proper. "Although Pfizer has not seen any documents from the US embassy in Nigeria regarding the federal government cases, the statements purportedly contained in such documents are completely false." In 1998, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Trovan for use by adults only. After reports of liver failure, its use in the United States was restricted to adult emergency care. http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2010/12/2010121061017861547.html The European Union banned its use in 1999. |

I do not know nothing about Blacks in England. Can someone come in here and enlighten me? ![]() Amerikka NEVER talks about other countries, yet alone how Blacks are living on other countries. |
Whose Cops are More Racist, America’s or the Brits'? “Blacks in England and Wales are 26 times more likely to be stopped and frisked on the streets than whites.” The United States criminal justice system has been called the most racist on the planet. And, by most measures, that’s true. But Blacks in Great Britain are also under siege by police – enough to generate a recent visit to London by Rev. Jesse Jackson. A new study shows that Blacks in England and Wales are 26 times more likely to be stopped and frisked on the streets than whites, a figure that Rev. Jackson said “undermines the moral authority” of the United Kingdom. It would be hard to criticize the analysis for sloppiness; it was conducted by the London School of Economics, in collaboration with the Open Society Justice Initiative. On the face of it, the figures would seem to indicate that Blacks in England and Wales are targeted by police with even more ferocity than their counterparts in New York City, where a similar stop-and-frisk campaign has scooped up progressively larger numbers of Blacks and Latinos in recent years. In England, Section 60 of the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act was originally promulgated to deal with rowdy soccer hooligans, most of whom are white, but has in recent years turned into a mechanism to disproportionately stop Blacks on the streets. New York City’s stop-and-frisk regime has drastically escalated under billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has also dramatically ramped up the pace of gentrification. Strong pressures also exist in England to contain the non-white population. “U.S. cops stop a much higher percentage of the people – about 25 times as many per capita.” But, are the police in England and Wales really more viciously racist than New York City cops? With Black Brits 26 times more likely to be stopped than whites, while Black New Yorkers are only 9 times more likely, one might conclude that the English cops behave in a more racist manner. But the sheer numbers of stop-and-frisks in New York City may say otherwise. In 2009, only about 150,000 people were stopped on the streets in all of England and Wales, home to 54 million people. New York City has 8 million residents, less than one-sixth the size of England and Wales, but its cops stopped nearly 600,000 people, four times as many, the vast majority of them Black and Latino. The conclusion: When English cops stop someone on the street, it is more likely to be a Black person than a white – more likely than when New York cops make a stop: 26 to 1 versus 9 to 1. But U.S. cops stop a much higher percentage of the people – about 25 times as many per capita. What that would tend to indicate is, that a Black Brit might think he had it bad in England, but he'd be more likely to get picked out to be stopped and searched on the streets of New York, because of the sheer volume of stops in the Big Apple. The same applies to prison. The Black-white incarceration ratio is worse in Britain than it is in the United States. But the U.S. imprisons four times as many people per capita as the Brits do and holds a full 3 percent of the Black U.S. population behind bars. For Blacks in Britain, it's only 1 percent. So yes, it's true: the U.S. does have the most racist criminal justice system in the world. For Black Agenda Radio, I'm Glen Ford. On the web, go to www.BlackAgendaReport.com |
He is not like the halftard black boys I see that all they know is making mix-tape, speaking poor english, smoking weed and sagging their trousers to their knees without any academic qualification/aspiration to build the mind or be a back-up to an aspiration in entertainment. Then we get reports of academic underachievement by black males because all want to be gangster rappers, DJs or footballers, leaving people with Bawo's academic achievement as exceptions in the communityWhatever. what has nigeria exported that's worthy of mention beside OIL. and even that goes to the Politicians that keep the money for themselves. Escape to America at your peril. Besides, it is Governmental/Corporate Structural Institutions that keep Black and Brown people impoverished and HATING on each other. Look at how Nigerian Tribes DETEST each other. Poverty breeds hatred. AND poverty can be an "impoverished mind" conditioned to self loathing. |
you are such an ignorant loser, what exactly have you got that i would be jealous of?I suspect that in the UK your weak a.r.s.e Nigerian Degree was not recognized. so you had to take work as a commoner. Then the U.S. refuse you a VISA. LOL!!!! Rough over there in England aye? coming from Nigerian upscale to U.K. bottom feeder only to find that the U.K. lives for Everything American and YOU CAN'T GET HERE. ![]() |
yeah right. sweet dreams. I've seen many of these so called developments NEVER materialize. good luck with that |
At the end of the day, all human beings are not equal and those with the ability to exploit the system will make money. That is the capitalism. I am not about to go into the merits and demerits of capitalism, socialism, and communism with you because I know you are anti-capitalism and there is no point in having that debate with you. Lets just agree to disagree on that.+1 All that complaining and whining he's doing is NOT going to change things. Besides, he's in the UK. that chump is JEALOUS of EVERYTHING American. something is WRONG with him. he's suffering from searing low self esteem and is only causing his own hearthache focusing on EVERYTHING that's WRONG in Amerikka while unable to do anything about it. Sad mofo |

Dolton is a suburb right outside of chicago. It looks like a nice neighborhood but in reality, its a bunch of niggerish behaviors going on. Underemployed and unemployed youths are bad for any community. Whats up with these parents that OWN homes? SH.tz fugged up. |
In good ole amerikka, nobody excapes gun fire. Damn shame ![]() http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/southsouthwest/ct-met-dolton-shooting-1201-20101130,0,525269.story At only 21, Olubusayo Awomolo was so focused on obtaining his master's degree in mechanical engineering that he hardly did anything besides go to class and study, his father said. His quiet life and single-minded devotion to school made it all the more difficult for his family to comprehend how Awomolo could be gunned down Monday evening in the driveway of their Dolton home. "My son is gone," said Wale Awomolo, as he stood surrounded by friends and family Tuesday in their south suburban home. "He was a very, very, very quiet boy. I'm hoping the police will be able to tell me why." Olubusayo Awomolo was a master's degree candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he also received his bachelor's degree, officials there confirmed. ------- He grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and joined his father and siblings in Dolton in December 2002, his family said. He graduated from Thornwood High School, then made it his mission to finish college. "He was all academics," said his sister, Arinola Awomolo. "He was very quiet, easygoing and nice. He was an amazing brother." He was returning home from the Chicago campus when a group of men approached him, Wale Awomolo said he learned from neighbors. Although some neighbors said they heard the shooting and at least one saw several men go up to his son, no one called police, Wale Awomolo said. The man was discovered by his older brother, who was coming home and found him lying in their driveway in the 15500 block of Ingleside Avenue. "My son said he saw a body and he called 911," Awomolo said. "He thought it was someone drunk or someone sleeping. Then we found out it was my son. I said, 'My God.'" According to Dolton police Chief Bolden Jones, Olubusayo Awomolo was shot and killed between 7 and 7:45 p.m. Police have no one in custody and are asking anyone with information to come forward, Jones said. "The most important thing is to find out what happened to this young man and who did this," he said. On Tuesday, friends and family sat in the living room of the Awomolo family's modest brick house struggling to understand the tragedy. The boy's mother sat on the couch, crying quietly while friends hugged and comforted her. "This is terrible. You never think this could happen in a neighborhood like this," said Adeyemi Adesuyi, a family friend. "We should be our brother's keeper and look out for each other." Margaret Taiwo, the victim's aunt, said just thinking about what happened to her nephew made her angry. "We want people to know this is very bad," she said. "People should not be afraid to call the police. It could have been their child. If he got help, he could be in the hospital right now, recovering. But he was left there. Only God knows. "I pray, whoever did this, will not rest." His friends and family described Awomolo as a bookworm who spent most of his time on his laptop computer. On his MySpace page, Awomolo said he liked to play video games and read war stories. "He was a best boy," Adesuyi said. "He did what you asked him to do and he was very focused |
