Politics / How Nigeria Was Sold To The British For £865k In 1899 by Mandynews(f): 7:59pm On Jul 26, 2019
MandyNews.com brought more details on a trending topic on Twitter over Royal Niger company history on how Nigeria as a country was bought by the British via a company called Royal Niger Campany.

Read on below.

All 19th century, palm oil was highly sought-after by the British, for use as an industrial lubricant for machinery. Remember that Britain was the world’s first industrialised nation, so they needed resources such as palm oil to maintain that. Palm oil, of course, is a tropical plant native to the Niger Delta. Malaysia’s dominance came a century later.

By 1870, palm oil had replaced slaves as the main export of the Niger Delta, the area which was once known as the Slave Coast. At first, most of the trade in the oil palm was uncoordinated, with natives selling to those who gave them the best deals. Native chiefs such as former slave, Jaja of Opobo, became immensely wealthy because of oil palm. With wealth comes influence.

However, among the Europeans, there was competition for who would get preferential access to the lucrative oil palm trade. In 1879, George Goldie (1846 – 1925) formed the United African Company (UAC), which was modeled on the former East India Company. Goldie effectively took control of the Lower Niger River. By 1884, his company had 30 trading posts along the Lower Niger. This monopoly gave the British a strong hand against the French and Germans in the 1884 Berlin Conference. The British got the area that the UAC operated in, included in their sphere of influence after the Berlin Conference.

When the British got the terms they wanted from other Europeans, they began to deal with the African chiefs. Within two years of 1886, Goldie had signed treaties with tribal chiefs along the Benue and Niger Rivers whilst also penetrating inland. This move inland was against the spirit of verbal agreements that had been made to restrict the organization’s activities to coastal regions.

By 1886, the company name changed to “The National Africa Company” and was granted a royal charter (incorporated). The charter authorized the company to administer the Niger Delta and all lands around the banks of the Benue and Niger Rivers. Soon after, the company was again renamed. The new name was “Royal Niger Company,” which survives, as Unilever, till this day.

To local chiefs, the Royal Niger Company negotiators had pledged free trade in the region. Behind the scenes, they entered private contracts on their terms. Because the (deceitful) private contracts were often written in English and signed by the local chiefs, the British government enforced them. So for example, Jaja of Opobo, when he tried to export palm oil on his own, was forced into exile for “obstructing commerce”. As an aside, Jaja was “forgiven” in 1891 and allowed to return home, but he died on the way back, poisoned with a cup of tea.

Seeing what happened to Jaja, some other native rulers began to look more closely at the deals they were getting from the the Royal Nigeria Company. One of such kingdoms was Nembe, who’s king, Koko Mingi VIII, ascended the throne in 1889 after being a Christian schoolteacher. Koko Mingi VIII, King Koko for short, and like most rulers in the yard, was faced with the Royal Nigeria Company encroachment. He also resented the monopoly enjoyed by the the Royal Nigeria Company, and tried to seek out favourable trading terms, with particularly the Germans in Kamerun.

By 1894 the the Royal Nigeria Company increasingly dictated whom the natives could trade with, and denied them direct access to their former markets.

In late 1894, King Koko renounced Christianity, and tried to form an alliance with Bonny and Okpoma against the the Royal Nigeria Company to take back the trade. This is significant because while Okpoma joined up, Bonny refused. A harbinger of the successful “divide and rule” tactic.

On 29 January 1895, King Koko led an attack on the Royal Niger Company’s headquarters, which was in Akassa in today’s Bayelsa state. The pre-dawn raid had more than a thousand men involved. King Koko’s attack succeeded in capturing the base. Losing 40 of his men, King Koko captured 60 white men as hostages, as well as a lot of goods, ammunition and a Maxim gun. Koko then attempted to negotiate a release of the hostages in exchange for being allowed to chose his trading partners. The British refused to negotiate with Koko, and he had forty of the hostages killed. A British report claimed that the Nembe people ate them. On 20 February 1895, Britain’s Royal Navy, under Admiral Beford attacked Brass, and burned it to the ground. Many Nembe people died and smallpox finished off a lot of others.

By April 1895, business had returned to “normal”, normal being the conditions that the British wanted, and King Koko was on the run. Brass was fined £500 by the British, £26,825 in today’s money, and the looted weapons were returned as well as the surviving prisoners. After a British Parliamentary Commission sat, King Koko was offered terms of settlement by the British, which he rejected and disappeared. The British promptly declared him an outlaw and offered a reward of £200 (£10,730 today) for him. He committed suicide in exile in 1898.

About that time, another “recalcitrant King”, the Oba of Benin, was run out of town. The pacification of the Lower Niger was well and truly under way.

The immediate effect of the Brass Oil War was that public opinion in Britain turned against the the Royal Nigeria Company, so its charter was revoked in 1899. Following the revoking of its charter, the the Royal Niger Company sold its holdings to the British government for £865,000 (£46,407,250 today). That amount, £46,407,250 (NGN12,550,427,783.81 at today’s exchange rate) was effectively the price Britain paid, to buy the territory which was to become known as Nigeria.

Politics / EFCC Reacts To Sealed Rochas Foundation College, Supermarket, Daughter’s School by Mandynews(f): 6:10pm On Jul 24, 2019
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, wishes to state that it’s Enugu zonal office on Tuesday July 23, 2019 traced and marked some properties traced to the former Imo state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha as well as those of his family members and cronies.

The marking of the properties which is a fall-out of our painstaking investigation, is as a result of the failure of the suspects to honour the commission’s invitation for questioning on the propriety of their acquisition.

The properties include: Dews of Hope Hospital traced to Dr. Paschal Obi, former Principal Secretary to ex-governor Okorocha; Market Square Super Market; All in One Shop; and premises belonging to Imo State Broadcasting Corporation now hosting Rochas Foundation College owned by Senator Okorocha.

Other properties are: East High Academy and East High College, owned by Okorocha’s daughter, Uloma Okorocha-Nwosu; Royal Spring Palm Hotel and Apartment, a 16 block c*um 96 flats and eight bungalow multi-million Naira estate traced to Okorocha’s wife.

The commission at no time “raided” nor “harassed” anyone in the course of marking the properties as its operatives, in line with international best practices, informed the occupants of the facilities in good time, before taking the action.

It is also pertinent to state that the commission has pictorial and video evidences which put a lie to the claim that Rochas Foundation College was allegedly raided by the EFCC while in session. This could not be so because the school was not in session and could not have had its students harassed as was fed some online media.

The commission would ordinarily not bother with any allegation coming from the camp of Senator Okorocha, having noted his penchant for frivolities and propaganda; but this refutal has become pertinent in other to clear doubts especially in these days of fake news.

We urge all well meaning Nigerians to disregard the antics of some unscrupulous politicians and fraudsters who seek to distract the commission from holding them accountable for their nefarious activities.

Politics / President Buhari Signs Power Deal With Siemens AG (video) by Mandynews(f): 1:23pm On Jul 22, 2019
The Federal Government has signed an agreement with German-based Siemens AG today on an electrification roadmap aimed at addressing the nation’s power crisis, our correspondent has learnt.

According to the video sighted by MandyNews.com, as shared by official Twitter handle of the president.

He wrote;

"Today, in partnership with the German Government and Siemens AG, we are making an important move forward in addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenge. Our goal is a simple one: to deliver more electricity to Nigerian businesses and homes.

My challenge to Siemens, our partner investors in the Distribution Companies, the TCN, and NERC, is to work hard to achieve the target of 7,000 megawatts of reliable power supply by 2021 and 11,000 megawatts by 2023 – in phases 1 and 2 of this initiative, respectively.

Our intention is to ensure that our cooperation is structured under a Government-to-Government framework. No middlemen will be involved, so that we can achieve value for money for Nigerians.

We also insist that all products be manufactured to high quality German and European standards and competitively priced.

This project will not be the solution to ALL our problems in the power sector. However, I am confident that it has the potential to address a significant amount of the challenges we have faced for decades.

It is our hope that as the power situation improves, we will improve investor confidence, create jobs, reduce the cost of doing business and encourage more economic growth in Nigeria."

Celebrities / Beyonce’s “Brown Skin Girl” With Wizkid Enters Top 10 On US Itunes Sales Chart by Mandynews(f): 1:40pm On Jul 20, 2019
“Brown Skin Girl” is making big opening day moves on the US iTunes sales chart.

Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl” song with Wizkid, Saint Jhn and Blue Ivy Carter entered the market Saturday, and it is quickly finding resonance with US music fans.

As of press time at 1:40PM ET, it holds the # 10 position on the all-genre US iTunes sales chart. With momentum on its side, it obviously has a chance of moving higher in the coming hours.

As things stand, only Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus)” and Post Malone’s “Goodbyes (featuring Young Thug)” are selling at a faster pace.

Politics / "I Don’t Have Any Future Political Ambition" - Godwin Obaseki (video) by Mandynews(f): 8:42am On Jul 20, 2019
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has said as long as he remains governor the state will not be used as a mere pawn in a political game.
Obaseki said he would no longer allow a certain individual to continue to lord over the state, making all federal appointments and cancelling the elections he had conducted.

In a video sighted by MandyNews.com, Obaseki can be seen talking to a group led by Dickson Omoregie that individuals who were unhappy with his administration’s refusal to share state resources were behind the political crisis in the state.

Obaseki  said it was  embarrassing that  he was being  ridiculed when “at the centre, we have one of our own person who is supposed to superintend this”.

In what appeared to be a veiled reference to the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, he said, “So, if your children are fighting and you cannot come and settle them then what authority do you have to even be a father?”

He argued that even if he was the worst governor of Edo State, it remained  a fact that he was  the only APC governor in  the South-South.

Obaseki said were it not for his patience as governor, the state would have gone the way of Zamfara State where the party lost every elective position during the last elections.

He said, “How can I as governor  conduct elections and someone will come and cancel them  and be  manipulating and throwing  all sorts of people in there and now wants to use the people to fight me and remove me from office,  and you want me to keep quiet?

“So, I have said it that at the end of the day,  I only have one mandate to serve Edo people and as long as God has given me this opportunity,  I will not allow Edo State to be a pawn  in anybody’s political chess game.”
