PoliticsWe’ve Reached Agreement On Minimum Wage "Keyamo, Labour" by Maniagist1(op): 4:03am On Oct 18, 2019
The Federal Government and organised labour on Thursday finally agreed on the percentage increase on the consequential adjustment in workers’ salaries as a result of the new minimum wage of N30,000.

As the meeting reached an advanced stage, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, tweeted from the venue that both parties had reached an agreement, but he did not give details.

The tweet read, “After some delicate negotiations (with both ministers as conciliators), the government and labour have finally reached an agreement on the consequential adjustment of other wages following the implementation of the enhanced minimum wage of N30,000. We are working on the communiqué.

In a statement, the President of the Trade Union Congress, Quadri, and the Secretary General, Musa-Lawal Ozigi, confirmed the peace pact, commending the Federal Government and labour for their patience while the National Minimum Wage negotiations lasted.

The statement read, “We commend the Head of Service of the Federation, Dr Folashade

Yemi-Esan, and her team for their sincerity. Though they argued that the government could not afford to meet our earlier demand of N30,000 minimum wage across board because of the economic situation in the country, we made them understand that some people could not be more Nigerian than others. If we are tightening our belts, government should also do so.”

The secretary of the JNCSNC, Alade Lawal, also confirmed the figure to our correspondent through a text message after confirmation on what was agreed with the FG was sought from him.

Lawal had earlier told our correspondent that the parties had reached an agreement on the wage crisis.

He said both parties agreed on 23.2 percentage increase for workers at grade level 07; 20 per cent for those at grade level 08; 19 per cent for workers at grade level 09; 16 per cent for those on levels 10 to 14; and 14 per cent for workers at grade levels 15 to 17.

The meeting was still going on as of the time of filing this report (12.56am) on Friday.

The agreement did not come easy as negotiations between both parties collapsed several times in the last six months.

The agreement came 182 days after President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new minimum wage into law.

After the necessary legislative processes at the National Assembly, Buhari signed the 2019 New National Minimum Wage Bill into law on April 18, 2019.

Thursday’s meeting was slated to begin at 7pm but more than one hour after the labour team, led by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, and the government team had taken their seat, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, and Keyamo came into the conference room.

Present at the meeting were the General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress, Musa Origi; NLC General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja; Chairman of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, Simon Anchaver; Secretary of the council, Alade Lawal; the President, Nigeria Union of Civil Service, Amaechi Lawrence; and the union’s General Secretary, Issa Aremu.

On the government side were the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan; acting Chairman of the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta; and the Permanent Secretary in the labour ministry, William Alo.

Ngige reminded the gathering that the future of the country must be given consideration in the negotiations.

He said if the country became broke because of personnel cost, it would suffer the consequences.

The leader of the government team, Folashade Yemi-Esan, said since Wednesday’s meeting adjourned around 2am on Thursday, members of the government team had not rested because of the enormous work given to it for an agreement to be reached at the Thursday meeting.

CrimeHow Scammers Use My Office To Defraud Nigerians "Boss Mustapha Says" by Maniagist1(op): 3:37pm On Oct 16, 2019
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, has said that job scammers are directing unsuspecting Nigerians seeking government appointments to submit their curriculum vitae to a non-existing desk in his office, while also charging a fee for the fraudulent activity.

A statement signed by the Director of Information at Mustapha’s office, Willie Bassey, noted on Thursday.

The SGF also noted that he was aware of forged introductory letters purportedly issued from his office to secure favours from individuals and corporate entities.

The statement reads, “The attention of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, has been drawn to unrelenting activities of faceless persons using the social media and other platforms to lure unsuspecting members of the public to submit their curriculum vitae at a fee, to a non-existing desk at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, for Federal Government appointments.

The Office is similarly aware of inaccurate information being peddled around regarding constituency projects being executed under its supervision.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation neither executes nor supervises constituency projects.

Also, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has become aware of numerous forged introductory letters purportedly issued from his office, seeking diverse favours from individuals and corporate entities for personal gains.

The statement further warned the public not to engage the services of such individuals; while adding that efforts were on to apprehend those behind the trend.

It also directed the public to contact the SGF office through the appropriate channel.

The general public is by this notice advised to beware of the clandestine activities of these dubious and fraudulent persons and their cohorts going about to fleece unsuspecting members of the public.

Assuredly, the government has evolved measures to track these unpatriotic and faceless persons and will bring to justice anyone found engaging in these unwholesome activities,” the statement added.

HealthUnregistered Medicine Remains Fake Until It Passes NAFDAC Test "DG NAFDAC Says" by Maniagist1(op): 3:29pm On Oct 16, 2019
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control on Wednesday warned members of National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers to abide by its regulatory guidelines and rules on drug administration.

The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the warning at a sensitisation workshop in Enugu State tagged ‘NAFDAC’s regulatory expectation of NAPPMED in Nigeria.”

Adeyeye said that all unregistered medicines remain fake drug until it passed through the Agency’s vital registration process, numbering and check.

Represented by NAFDAC South-East Zonal Director, Mrs Olajumoke Ojetokun, the NAFDAC boss explained that the dangers of the use of counterfeit and unwholesome medicines are enormous which according to her “range from pharmacological issues such as; respiratory depression (shallow breath and irregular breathing), central depression/severe drowsiness.

Other dangers are; muscle rigidity, unconsciousness/coma to socio-economic problems such as; crime, terrorism, loss of economic productivity and pressure on the healthcare systems,’’ she said.

The director-general also urged NAPPMED members to join the train of compliance and “active collaboration’’ with NAFDAC to create a healthy and safe country for all.

Always be vigilant within your market area and neighbourhoods and alert NAFDAC immediately for action” even as she assured of a robust and cordial relationship between the association and NAFDAC.

Speaking, Mr Chuks Osuji, Chairman of NAPPMED Ogbete Market (Section B), said that the association was committed to working with NAFDAC.

We are ever ready to obey all the instructions given by NAFDAC and maintain a cordial relationship with the Agency,’’ Osuji said.

On his part, Mr Oliver Ezemba, Chairman of NAPPMED Ogbete Market (Section A), noted that NAPPMED members had been longing for a workshop like this, where individual members would be taught best practices and how to ensure compliance.

It is clear that whenever someone sells an unwholesome or fake drug or medicine; it might be your family or friend that might end up using it,’’ Ezemba said.

The workshop, which was jointly organized by NAFDAC and NAPPMED, was attended by over 200 NAPPMED members excluding NAFDAC staff.

Members of the Otunba Gani Adams-led Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), on Tuesday, October 15th arrested a suspected kidnapper in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The suspected kidnapper, who identified himself as Taofeek Lawal, said he hailed from Osogbo, Osun State. Lawal confessed he had been engaged in the kidnapping business to sponsor his wife’s education in a higher institution in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The suspect, who confessed that his targets were children between the ages of four and six years, said the ransom for any kidnapped child was N100,000. According to him, he had successfully kidnapped three children in Osogbo and three in Lagos, and had sold his own child to take care of his family.

Lawal said his 15-man gang was working for politicians and a traditional ruler in Osun State whenever they needed their services. “I have built two houses, a mosque and a church. I do take care of my family from what I do and my parents know about what I do,” he said.

The suspect further said that he had intended to quit the kidnapping but the said traditional ruler in Osogbo encouraged him to keep doing it. He said he had been caught five times in Lagos and Osogbo, but that the traditional ruler in Osogbo was always securing his release.

An OPC official at Olaifa zone, Mr Babatunde Atiba, explained that the Congress got hint of the activities of the suspected kidnapper through a woman. Lawal has been handed over to the Oyo State Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for proper investigation and prosecution.

CrimeUNILAG Alumnus Accused Of Rape Denies Making Confessional Statement by Maniagist1(op): 6:39am On Oct 15, 2019
John Otema, an alumnus of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), standing trial for having unlawful sexual intercourse with students of the institution has denied voluntarily making parts of his purported confessional statement to the police.

Mr Fred Onyeka, counsel to Otema, on Monday, contested the statement being tendered in evidence at the resumed hearing of the case at the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court.

Onyeka said that an addendum of six lines, where his client admitted to having unlawful sexual intercourse with Student Y (name withheld) in his statement did not emanate voluntarily from him.

The defence counsel said that Otema was coerced to write that he voluntarily wrote the contents and was not beaten prior to writing the statement.

I am objecting on the ground that the last six lines of this statement were made on a different date from the first date which was Feb. 8, 2018.

Those six lines were of the defendant. It was obtained involuntarily my Lord; he was forced to make those confessions.

It is a flagrant violation of Section 34(1) (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended,” Onyeka said.

Urging the court to look at the proof of evidence, the defence counsel, requested that the court order a trial-within-trial to ascertain the voluntariness or otherwise of Otema’s alleged confessional statement.

Responding, Mr Akin George, the lead state prosecutor, urged the court to allow the prosecution to bring in relevant witnesses to prove the voluntariness of the confessional statements.

Obliging the request of the defence counsel, Justice Abiola Soladoye adjourned the case until Oct. 30 for trial-within-trial.

Sex-for-grades scandal: We rejoiced when Boniface claimed he had embraced Christ – Friend of embattled UNILAG lecturer

Otema is facing a three-count charge, bordering on rape and assault occasioning harm.

He is accused of raping two undergraduates of UNILAG.

According to the charge, Otema had sexual intercourse with Student Y without her consent on Jan. 31, 2018 at his home at No. 6, Ajileye St., Bariga, Lagos.

Also, on Jan. 17, he had unlawful sexual intercourse with Student X around the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) at UNILAG, Akoka, Lagos.

He also allegedly physically assaulted Student X by hitting her several times in the face, strangling her and biting her back.

The offences contravene Sections 173 and 260(1)(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Crime29 Passengers Escape Death As Bus Plunges Into Lagos Canal (PHOTOS) by Maniagist1(op): 7:57pm On Oct 14, 2019
29 passengers on Monday escaped death by whiskers after a commercial bus conveying them plunged into a canal in front of the National Theatre complex, Iganmu, Lagos,

They were all rescued unhurt, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

NAN learnt that the vehicle, with registration number MISA 68 XH, suddenly developed technical problem and plunged into the canal opposite National Theatre entrance.

The driver of the bus, Mr Augustine Okorie, who spoke to NAN, described the survival of the passengers as a “miracle’

I was bringing in 29 passengers from Shinbiri area in Okokomaiko along the Badagry Expressway and on getting to the front of the National Art Theatre, I lost control and the vehicle plunged into the canal.

As I was about to change the gear and could not do that immediately, the vehicle started to swerve uncontrollably and before you know what was happening, we found ourselves inside the canal.

In spite of the situation, I was so worried about my conductor who was hanging by the door, but we thank God none of us sustained injury,” Okorie said.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who refused to be identified, told NAN at the scene of the accident that they quickly alerted other emergency and traffic management agencies who assisted in the quick rescue of occupant of the vehicle.

NAN, however, reports that the vehicle was brought out of the canal 30 minutes later by officials of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA)

CrimeSuspect Confesses Using In-law’s Police Uniform For Armed Robbery by Maniagist1(op): 7:16am On Oct 14, 2019
The leader of a three man armed robbery gang Ojonugwa Ojomeje who is currently being investigated by the State Criminal investigation and intelligence department, Panti has revealed how he used his in-law’s police uniform for robbery.

According to 29-old Ojonugwa Ojomeje who was arrested alongside his accomplice Emmanuel Michael (24) and Moses Ogeh (27) by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad at Ikorodu area of Lagos, “in July 2019, men in police uniform collected my ‘okada’ in Ikorodu Bus Stop.

They told me they were Taskforce team from Ebute Police Station. They advised me to meet them there while they took the ‘okada’ away. It was after 10:00 p.m.

I went from Ebute Police Station to Ijede, Mola and Ladigboye Police Post, there was no trace of them. It was my only means of livelihood. It was exactly a week I got the ‘Okada’ on hired purchase at N280,000:00.

I paid only N40,000 with a balance of N240,000 to settle the owner, Chinedu. I searched for it in all the surrounding police stations but there was no record of it.

In order to pay the balance because Chinedu couldn’t take the excuse. I borrowed my friend’s bike, and bit by bit, I paid another N40,000. Because the owner was deeply on my neck with the payment, I sought the assistance of my friend to help me hijack another ‘okada’”.

He continued: “I had a MOPOL vest at home thrown away by a former neighbour in Obalende. I appealed to Michael to borrow me his sister’s husband police uniform. The plan was to get a motorbike for me and later on, I would pay them too after I might have finished paying my debt.

While I put on the MOPOL vest, Ogeh, a foodstuff seller put on the police vest and fez cap. At around 10:00 p.m, the three of us set out using Michael’s ‘Okada’ to Ita Maga.

We collected a bike but we were arrested”
Police quiz UNTH Doctor over criminal defamation of colleague,

It was learned that two of the suspects: Ojomeje and Ogeh were caught in MOPOL vest and police vest and fez cap while trying to escape after collecting an ‘Okada’ from a rider in Ikorodu.

The trio, operating on Michael’s ‘okada’ in the area, had around 10:00 p.m. accosted another ‘okada’ rider, stopped him and dispossessed him of his motorcycle. They were said to have told the owner that they were police officers from a nearby police station.

The victim on releasing the ‘okada’ to the robbers walked few steps away before crying out for help. This drew the attention of passers-by and the operatives of Rapid Response Squad in the area.

They were chased and arrested few meters from the scene.

Protesting vociferously to Ojomeje’s explanation of their roles, Michael and Ogeh stated that they were charmed and made to take an oath by their ring leader.

They added that they were offered kolanut to eat after Ojomeje had promised them a successful outing.

Investigations revealed that no police record avowed that a bike was from Ojomeje since July, 2019.

It was also disclosed that Michael’s in-law whose police vest and fez cap were used for the operation was outside the state at the time of the incident.

The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Reacting to the development, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Muazu Zubairu stated that the police would not relent in its efforts at bringing to book criminals who impersonate the police to give the force a bad name.

PoliticsPDP To Presidency, "We’re Not A Party Of ‘certificate Forgers" by Maniagist1(op): 9:09pm On Oct 13, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it remained vibrant as a major opposition party in the country.

This was in reaction to the statement credited to the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Lanre Issa-Onilu and Shehu Garba, media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that opposition was dead in the country.

National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, during a media briefing in Abuja on Sunday said it was untrue that opposition was missing or dead in Nigeria, adding that such claim was a figment of their imagination.

Ologbondiyan stated Nigeria would never become a one-party state, warning that efforts to turn the country in the past to one-party state failed.

He added that Nigeria would always survive dictators.

The PDP spokesman therefore advised those counseling the Buhari presidency to attempt to turn Nigeria to a one-party state to back off.

The Buhari presidency came out to claim that there are agitators for a third term. We quickly pointed it out to them that there are no agitators; rather, if there is anything, it is the Buhari Presidency who is bringing the third term to the issue of national discourse,” he said.

We assured them that, given the magnificent failures of this Buhari Presidency, Nigerians are not ready to discuss it.

From there, they have moved to the issue of one-party state and bringing it to national discourse. Even that is totally unacceptable to us and I want those who are advising the President on this issue to back off.

As they came out to claim that the major opposition party is dead, we want to state clearly that our party is the consensus political party of the majority of Nigerians and our party, after a long journey of overhauling, has become the centre for seeking for power and good governance in our nation.

The PDP does not contain certificate forgers; it is not a party of people who are contrivers.

Our political party is relating directly with Nigerian people and we are working assiduously to make sure that democratic tenets of our nation is not only entrenched but seen to be entrenched in our nation.

He added, “As we do not have space to respond to the gimmicks of former democrats who went around the nation and brought a despot into a democratic order, so also do we have no space to engage in verbal discussion with characters who are known to be pillaging and stealing directly from the patrimony of our nation.

As such, we are not going to respond to the innuendos such characters are bandying.

The PDP remains the bastion of democracy in our nation. PDP is in the Supreme Court to ensure that the mandate which was given to Atiku and has been stolen is restored to us.
