Five members of the US Congress have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, and more than two dozen others have said they are self-quarantining in hopes of limiting the spread of the pandemic.

The US House of Representatives passed a $2.2 trillion economic relief bill on Friday that had already been approved by the Senate. The House acted on a voice vote, and not all of the chamber’s 430 current members returned to Washington for it.

Here is a look at some of the lawmakers affected:

WHO HAS THE VIRUS?

Representative Mike Kelly

Kelly, a Republican from Pennsylvania, said on Friday he has tested positive for the coronavirus at a drive-through testing site.

Kelly said in a statement he had started experiencing mild flu-like symptoms earlier this week, and his doctor ordered the coronavirus test.

Representative Joe Cunningham

Cunningham, a Democrat from South Carolina, said on Friday he had tested positive for the coronavirus, although his symptoms have already begun to improve.

Cunningham said he had been tested a day ago at a local testing clinic. He said he had been in self-quarantine since March 19 after learning he had been in contact with another member of Congress who had tested positive.

Senator Rand Paul

The Kentucky Republican said on March 22 that he had tested positive and was in quarantine. He said he was asymptomatic and feeling fine and was tested out of an abundance of caution. He had been in the Senate and using the gym there in the days before he received his positive result.

Representative Mario Diaz-Balart

The Florida Republican said on March 18 that he tested positive after developing symptoms on March 14. That was less than 24 hours after he and more than 400 other members of the House of Representatives crowded into the chamber to pass a sweeping coronavirus aid package.

Representative Ben McAdams

The Utah Democrat said on March 18 that he had the virus, also having developed symptoms on March 14. In a statement March 24, the 45-year-old said he had been hospitalized and doctors were monitoring his occasional need for oxygen.

WHO IS SELF-QUARANTINED?

Republican Senators Mitt Romney and Mike Lee said on March 22 they would self-quarantine after having spent time with Paul.

Romney said on March 24 that he had tested negative for the virus but would stay in quarantine.

Paul, Romney and Lee all missed the March 25 Senate vote on the coronavirus bill, along with Senator John Thune, who began to feel unwell and flew home to his state of South Dakota that day. Thune, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, was feeling better by the next day and was still monitoring his health but was not in quarantine, his spokesman said.

At least four other senators previously self-quarantined. They are Republicans Cory Gardner, Lindsey Graham, Rick Scott and Ted Cruz. All have since returned to public life.

Democratic Senator and former presidential contender Amy Klobuchar said on March 26 that her husband, 52-year-old John Bessler, had been released from the hospital and was now at home recovering from the coronavirus. She had said several days earlier that she was not at risk because she had not seen him for two weeks.

More than two dozen House members have self-quarantined, some after exposure to Diaz-Balart or McAdams, and others after contacts with their constituents or staffers who later tested positive. Not all are still in isolation.

Two prominent Democratic House members, Ayanna Pressley and Katie Porter, said Thursday they had tested negative a day after they began self-quarantine.

Other members who have self-quarantined include: Republicans Steve Scalise, Mark Meadows, Tom Cole, Doug Collins, Drew Ferguson, Matt Gaetz, Paul Gosar and Ann Wagner, along with Democrats Don Beyer, Anthony Brindisi, Julia Brownley, Jason Crow, Sharice Davids, Kendra Horn, Andy Kim, Seth Moulton, Gwen Moore, Stephanie Murphy, Ben Ray Lujan, David Price, Kathleen Rice, David Schweikert and John Yarmuth.

So, it was more of mixed reactions when Senator Dino Melaye announced that he has joined Nollywood and presently on the set of a new movie titled; “Silent Prejudice”.

Most of his followers were shocked that the Senator would actually join Nollywood in the real sense of it, while others excitedly said that they saw it coming and can’t wait to see the movie when it’s out.

It would be recalled that last year, the controversial Senator released a song against the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

Melaye sang the song himself and it is titled” ‘Kogi Koya… Kogi ko Bello, this was after his hit song, Ajekuiya went viral in 2019.

Dino Melaye is a Nigerian politician, a Senator and was a member of the 8th Nigerian National Assembly, representing Kogi West Senatorial district. Dino is a member of the People’s Democratic Party. He was the Chairman Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

Two women who have been best friends since they were kids discovered just last month that they are biological sisters.

The women, identified as Ashley Thomas and Latoya Wimberly, have been inseparable for 17 years. People often commented that they look alike. As children, they had identical gaps in their front teeth, high cheek bones and the same complexion. They also wore the same size in shoes. They shared the same interests, including in music and fashion.

Though they were really close, they never suspected they were biological sisters until in January 2020 when Latoya Wimberly, 29, had a party to celebrate her engagement. Ashley Thomas, 31, shared photos from the party on Facebook.

Some of the photos included Latoya Wimberly’s father, Kenneth Wimberly.

While looking at the photos online, a friend of Ashley Thomas’ mother saw Kenneth and realized she knew him.

Ashley’s mom’s best friend told her she had no idea my dad was Kenny,” Latoya Wimberly said. “She said she and Ashley’s mom used to hang around him back when they were young. When Ashley told me, I knew something didn’t click. So I asked her to send me a picture of her mom’s best friend and showed it to my dad and asked him if he recognized her.

Kenneth immediately recognized the woman. And later, when shown a photo of Ashley Thomas’ mother, he recognized her, too. He revealed they had had a brief romantic relationship.

When he was told that Ashley Thomas did not know who her biological father was, Kenneth suspected it might be him and he volunteered to go for a DNA test with his daughter Latoya and her friend Ashley.

On February 21, 2020, the results came in and the girls discovered that they are indeed sisters.

It was a Friday, and I was at work when I got the call,” Ashley Thomas said. “When Kenny told me he was my dad, chills went through my body. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t process it. I couldn’t even talk to them.

Thomas was 15 when she learned that the man who had raised her was not her biological father. Her mother, who died 11 years ago, never told her who may have been her father. Ashley’s family had also never met Latoya’s family, so they didn’t suspect , since Aanything.

However, Ashley hung out with Latoya a lot, her father Kenneth played a fatherly role in her life, without knowing she’s his biological daughter.

Ashley was the only one of my friends who didn’t miss a single family event,” Latoya Wimberly said. “She was extremely close to my entire family on both sides. If my father is taking me out, Ashley’s coming with me. If someone asks who are those girls, he says ‘Those are my girls.’ If she has a car problem or any kind of issue, she always goes to my dad. But somehow our families never met.

Ashley Thomas described the discovery as “beautiful,” but also “extremely emotional.”

She said: “I have so many questions for my mom and I will never have any of those answers. Did she know he was my father?”

She added: “Big Kenny was like my dad. He was there for me the whole time and I had no idea.”

CNN reports that before this discovery, the three have always been close and even regarded each other as family.

Ashley Thomas, who has two children, said: “It’s just a weird feeling. It’s definitely going to take some time. I’m still in disbelief. But I want him to be a part of his grandchildren’s lives.”

Latoya Wimberly said she’s happy for their sisterhood to be official, but also feels guilty that Kenneth was more involved in her life than Ashley’s.

I watched Ashley go through so many things growing up and now all I can think about is that her father was here and he could have been there for her just like he was for me,” said Latoya. “So that’s very emotional.

As for Kenneth, he said he’s looking forward to building a stronger relationship with Thomas and “loving her as his daughter.” He also wants to spend more time with his newfound grandchildren.

“I’ve always seen the little ones around and this entire time they were my grandchildren and I didn’t even know,” he said.

Brazilian football great Ronaldinho will remain in pre-trial detention in Paraguay after a judge on Tuesday rejected his lawyer’s request that he be released on bail or to house arrest.

The 39-year-old World Cup winner and his brother Roberto were arrested on Friday, accused of being in possession of fake Paraguayan passports.

The judge rejected the defense’s request for conditional release or house arrest,” said prosecutor Osmar Legal.

Judge Gustavo Amarilla cited the seriousness of the case and the discovery of new evidence, as well as the involvement of public officials and business people who facilitated Ronaldinho’s arrival in Paraguay.

Those factors meant the former footballer needed to be kept in Asuncion “so that there is no obstruction to the investigation,” he said.

Amarilla acknowledged the measures taken against the brothers were harsh but said it was his “responsibility not to hinder an investigation,” which could be the case if the suspects “were to flee” the country.

Legal said he opposed house arrest because the property offered as a guarantee was only valued at $750,000 to $800,000.

It’s a tiny amount given the economic solvency of one of the” accused, he said.

Ronaldinho and his brother are spending a fifth day in a police cell in Asuncion.

They arrived in Asuncion from Brazil on Wednesday and showed their passports to immigration police, who did not immediately notice any problem with the documents.

Hours later, when the passports were determined to be fake, investigators raided the football star’s hotel room and seized the brothers’ identity cards and travel documents.

Fake passports -Ronaldinho said the passports had been given to him by people who had invited him to attend conferences sponsored by charities working with disadvantaged children.

A Brazilian businessman has also been arrested in connection with the fake passports, while two Paraguayan women have been placed under house arrest and Paraguay’s migration director has resigned.

Ronaldinho’s Brazilian lawyer Sergio Queiroz has said the brothers were given the Paraguayan passports “to facilitate the possibility of doing business” in Paraguay.

Ronaldinho did not commit a crime because he did not know that the passport they gave him was faked,” he said.

The administrator of the charity that invited Ronaldinho, Dalia Lopez, has admitted requesting the passports but said she didn’t know they were forged.

A warrant has been issued for her arrest.

Amarilla said the investigation is looking into possible criminal association and money laundering.

Ronaldinho, considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, was one of the stars of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup win and played for European giants Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, among others.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday arraigned Aisha Wakil, popularly called Mama Boko Haram, alongside two others on eight counts, bordering on fraud.

This makes her and other defendants contending with cases of fraud before three judges in the state.

The two other arraigned with her before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, are senior members of her non-governmental organisation, Complete Care and Aid Foundation, Alhaji Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyode.

Early this week, the trio, with another person at large, were charged before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of another Borno State High Court with N111.7m fraud.

Wakil and Daura are facing corruption charges involving a N66m fraud before Justice Aisha Kumaliya.

Early this year, Wakil, Daura, Shoyode and Mallam Adamu Sani (at large) were arraigned for N42m fraud before Justice Jude Dagat of a Federal High Court, Maiduguri.

While Wakil pleaded “not guilty” to all the charges on Thursday, while the second and third defendants refused to take their pleas.

Justice Fadawu, however, entered a “not guilty” plea for the two defendants. She, thereafter, adjourned until March 12 and 16, 2020.

In view of the pleas, counsel for the EFCC, Fatsuma Muhammad[quote][/quote] asked for a trial date in order for the prosecution to prove its case against them.

Three suspected robbers were arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) at Baruwa Gate in Ipaja area of Lagos state.

The suspects who were arrested on Thursday March 5 after snatching N5000 from one Opeyemi Oni at a Bank around Baruwa Gate, were identified as Ojo Akin, living at 23, Alagbotor, Iyana – Ipaja; Obinna Solomon of 19, Idi – Araba, Ilasa B/Stop, Mushin and Adekunle Olaniyi of 15, Oke – Rube, Ijegun, Ikotun.

Three ATM Cards of different names and banks were recovered from the suspect after a search was conducted by security operatives. They have been handed over to the Gowon Estate Division of the Nigeria Police Force.

The death toll from coronavirus has reached 1114 as the number of people infected passes 45,000.

Authorities in the Chinese province of Hubei - ground zero for the Covid-19 epidemic - reported 94 new deaths from the virus today. Although slightly down from yesterday's grim total, the overall death toll is steadily rising.

The total number of people infected around the world is 45,079.

With 1638 newly-confirmed infections in Hubei, it means there are more than 33,366 people infected in that province alone.

The revised death toll comes as the World Health Organisation warned the disease could spread incredibly quickly.

WHO head of emergency programmes Michael Ryan said Covid-19 had the potential to spread faster than either the Ebola or Sars viruses.

Medical staff infected
The number of medical staff infected with coronavirus in Wuhan may be more than 1000.

The infections have caused strain on Wuhan's hospitals and "deep concern" among health care workers, the South China Morning Post reports.

The Chinese government has been accused of trying to suppress details about the infections among healthcare staff, issuing an edict for the extent of the problem not to be made public. It was not immediately clear why, although the government has been trying to boost morale.

Medical workers in protective suits move a coronavirus patient into an isolation ward at the Second People's Hospital in Fuyang in Anhui Province.

A slide, widely-circulated on social media, taken on January 18 at two different venues, shows the total of confirmed and suspected cases among medical staff was 1101.

Nigerian soldiers in the battlefront in the war against terrorists, have expressed disappointment with the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government for releasing 1,400 'repentant Boko Haram suspects.

According to The Cable, the soldiers said they do not understand why suspected Boko Haram members are being released in large numbers. A lot of soldiers are not happy about this.

We were there at the Maimalari barracks when some of these Boko Haram people were released,” one of the soldiers who doesn't want his name mentioned said. “The authorities are releasing them, but Boko Haram are killing soldiers that they capture.

This does not make sense to us at all. We continue to sweep across the bushes to flush these people out, and then the government will release them. Does that not amount to wasted efforts?

Similarly, another soldier stated that most of the Boko Haram insurgents who were being released on a 'repentant' claim, have found their way back to terrorism, unleashing mayhem in Nigerian communities.

He said, “You wonder why Boko Haram members are on the increase? When we arrest them and bring them here, some top people would come and start negotiating their release. But, I will tell you some of these so-called suspects are returning to the bush and they were never repentant.

Addressing the release of the repentant Boko Haram suspects, Borno Commissioner for Information, Babakura Jato said it is true that the insurgents were released in large numbers. According to him, 1, 400 had been released in three tranches since the ‘Operation Safe Corridor’ programme began.
