Okada/Tricycle Ban: Nans Urges Lasg To Provide Alternative Transport In Lagos Inner Road

South-West Coordinator of NANS, Olawale Kappo, said in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos that the state government should have provided alternatives and palliatives for commuters before placing the restriction.

Motorcycle serves as a means of livelihood and employment to thousands of people in Lagos which means banning them will cut people off their means of livelihood and impede them from catering for the needs of their families.

Several students get their fees from guardians who engage in this means of transportation and earn their living from it. “Furthermore, the elimination of Okada and tricycle on strategic routes will lead to loss of jobs as people will find it difficult to get to work at a stipulated time, said the students union leader.

Kappo said that regulated and organized Okada and tricycle transport system could work without posing dangers to the security of lives and property in the state. “Lagos State Government needs to put in place adequate security measures to protect her borders because of the free entry and exit at the moment in Lagos State.

They should engage in an operation to clear out all elements that pose potential threats to the security of lives and property in the state,’’ he said.

Kappo appealed to the state government to curb the excesses of the security officials to avoid the creation of civil unrest across the state. “We have received news of several clashes and chaos emanating from the overzealousness of the security officials in enforcing the ban.

It is a policy that is taking a negative toll on the people, hence minimal force should be used in the enforcement of the policy,’’ he said.

Nigeria and Ethiopia have signed a visa waiver agreement for diplomatic and official passport holders, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in the field of Defence.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, confirmed this development in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to the statement, President Muhammadu Buhari and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed witnessed the signing of the agreement on Tuesday in Addis Ababa.

The signing was performed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, and his Ethiopian counterpart, Gedu Andargachew, during the State Visit of the Nigerian leader.

Earlier, while meeting with the Ethiopian Prime Minister, President Buhari had discussed how to explore new areas of collaboration to further enhance and expand Nigeria-Ethiopia bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefits of the two countries.

The visa waiver agreement is expected to ease travels by officials and contribute to further strengthening of bilateral relations.

The Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation is important to both countries in the coordination of efforts in the fight against terrorism and securing peace and stability in their respective sub-regions, as well as on the continent of Africa.

The MoU will also enhance bilateral military cooperation in the areas of training and education, technical assistance, exchange of visits and defence technology transfer.

It also entails cooperation in peace support operation issues within the framework of the respective laws of the parties and on a reciprocal basis.

Both sides agreed to swiftly conclude negotiations on the revised Bilateral Air Services Agreement and the MoU on cultural cooperation.

The consummation of these two agreements will provide veritable platforms for deepening existing air transport services, tourism and cultural exchanges between the two countries, the statement said.

The presidential aide quoted Buhari to have expressed gratitude to the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia for the warm and generous hospitality extended to him and his delegation during the visit.

The Nigerian leader further extended an invitation to Prime Minister Ahmed to pay a reciprocal State Visit to Nigeria on mutually convenient dates.

Joint Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Philippine National Police operatives seized around 10kilograms of methamphetamine worth PHP68 million (about N489million) from two suspects in a buy-bust operation in Quezon City on Tuesday.

The suspects are identified as Nigerian Lawrence Ikegwuruka Obinna, 27, and and Malagasy Michaella Agustine, 23, both residing at the same address in Cavite.

Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), said both suspects, who were put under surveillance for three months, were arrested around 10 a.m.

Both will be facing non-bailable charges for trafficking and possession of dangerous drugs under Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

A benevolent UK-resident has paid for the medical bills of six stranded new mothers at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for the new mothers to be released.

According to Chris-Vincent Agyapong Febiri, the founding editor of Ghanacelebrities.com and Human Rights Advocate, his friend was left heart-wrenched by the state of the women when he arrived in Ghana and visited the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Crippled by the disheartening condition of women who had delivered new babies but were being held by the hospital for unpaid bills, his friend donated GHC5,000 (N334,714.54) to defray the debts of the women.

He paid 5,000 GHS for 6 women he does not know from anywhere—and they were soon discharged,” Chris-Vincent disclosed.
Chris-Vincent added that his friend described ” the joy on the faces of those women, as never seen.”

His friend, however, wondered why the gap between the rich and the poor keeps widening in Ghana without any real government social interventions to cushion the poor.

Chris-Vincent’s kind-hearted friend also quizzed why women after childbirth become stranded in a government hospital because they cannot pay their delivery bills and yet there is a National Health Insurance scheme said to be in place.

While details of Chris-Vincent’s friend were not shared along with the post, he posted awe-inspiring images of his friend, his colleagues and the new mothers who were discharged after he paid GHC5,000.

A two-year-old male child died and three others sustained injuries when a Fulani settlement at Jingbe, Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi, was completely razed by an overnight fire.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered in Lokoja on Sunday that the settlement made up of 87 thatched houses being inhabited by over 300 Fulani men, women and children, was gutted by fire at about 2 a.m. when the occupants were fast asleep.

Briefing newsmen on the development, the acting Chairman of the state branch of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria ( MCBAN), Ardo Bello Garatu, said that the incident occurred in the early hours of Feb. 8.

Garatu, who spoke through Mr Adamu Abubakar, the state Acting Assistant Secretary of the association, said that a two-year-old male child died in the incident, while three women sustained various degrees of injury.

He said that the victims, apart from being rendered homeless, had lost cash and personal effects worth millions of Naira.

He said that the victims who included children were now being forced to live in the open, calling for the urgent intervention of Gov. Yahaya Bello.

The association also appealed to the Federal Government to direct the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately come to the aid of the victims to prevent further loss of live.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, DanMalam Mohammed on Wednesday confirmed the death of a police sergeant, Yusuf Igoche in a gun duel with armed robbers on Lagos-Benin Expressway on Tuesday.

The sergeant, he said was on escort duty with a school principal who sustained several injuries and was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

He said that they were on their way to Lagos from Enugu State when they ran into an ambush.

They were coming from Enugu, the police sergeant was on escort (duty) with the principal. They ran into an ambush of armed robbers. He came out but unfortunately he lost his life,” he said

The police boss said the case is under investigation and a formal report on the incident has been made at the Edo State command.

We are investigating. As I’m talking to you I just sent a combined team of police officers into the bush now. On that day they followed them and they abandoned their car and a lot of things are recovered from the car.

So I told them to smoke the forest. They used long-range tear gas. When they saw our police they entered into the bush but they didn’t know the road and immediately they reached a dead end, they abandoned the car there. Our men went there yesterday but I sent them back today again because there is the possibility that they (gunmen) will come out,” he said.

Police source said the incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Benin Bypass.

It was revealed that the gunmen who came out of surrounding bushes, rained bullets on the Lexus GX470 Sports Utility Vehicle conveying Igoche and the school principal.

The police and the Edo State government have since commenced the clearing of all bushes by the roadside of Lagos-Benin Expressway to boost visibility of motorists following the spate of kidnapping and attacks on the highway.

The matter was raised on the floor of the state House of Assembly in a motion of urgent national importance by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yekini Idiaye.

As a result, security was beefed up in the area with road checkpoints mounted by the police, soldiers and vigilante group.

An unemployed man, 25, Ahmed Abiodun, on Wednesday in Lagos, appeared in a Magistrates’ Court for robbing a man of his phone worth N20,000 in a road traffic.

The defendant, who resides at Agege, Lagos, was arraigned before Magistrate Mrs A.O. Aderibigbe on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and robbery.

Abiodun, however, denied committing the offences and was admitted to a bail of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

Aderibigbe said that the surety should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the state government.

The prosecutor, Insp Mojirade Edeme, told the court that the defendant and others still at large, committed the offences on July 25, at Oke-Ira, Ogba, Lagos.

She said that the defendant dispossessed Mr Aliu Umaru of his phone.

The complainant was inside a vehicle in a road traffic, when the defendant and his accomplice snatched his phone through the window of the vehicle and ran away.

He raised alarm, a policeman ran after them, the defendant was apprehended and his accomplice escaped with the phone,” the prosecutor said.

According to the prosecutor, the alleged offences violate sections 287, 296 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing while section 296 prescribes 21 years for robbery.

The case was adjourned until Oct. 23 for mention.
