Politics / Majority Of Nigerians Are Poor - Buhari Tells New Ministers by Maniagist2: 2:18am On Aug 21, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has told his Ministers designate that majority Nigerians are extremely poor.

President Buhari said this on Tuesday at the end of a two-day Presidential Retreat for designate and senior Government officials.

Here is the full text of the President’s speech:
After two days, we have come to the end of a successful retreat. However, you will agree that our work is just beginning.

These last two days have been very instructive for me personally, because I have had the opportunity to know many of you new Ministers-Designate better.

I was also pleased to see that you have all equally enjoyed debating and deliberating on the various challenge.

Ladies and Gentlemen, majority of our people are poor and are anxiously hoping for a better life. A Nigeria in which they do not have to worry about what they will eat, where they will live or if they can afford to pay for their children’s education or healthcare.

Our responsibility as leaders of this great country is to meet these basic needs for our people. As I mentioned yesterday, this Administration inherited many challenges from our predecessors to mention a few:
A country in which 18 local governments in the Northeast were under the control of Boko Haram

Decayed infrastructure in which our rail lines and roads had severely deteriorated;
A rent seeking economy that depended largely on oil revenues and imports, Significant unpaid pensions, subsidy debts, legacy contractor debts. I can go on and on.

In our first term, we laid the foundation to rebuild our country. We recaptured those 18 Local Governments previously held by Boko Haram, whose activities are now limited to sporadic attacks against soft targets.

Our investments in road and rail infrastructure are without precedent, and many of you can attest to this. We also focused on diversifying the economy from oil towards agriculture and industrialization.

Despite reduced revenues from oil and gas compared to past governments, we have broadly addressed many of the legacy debts they left behind.

Whilst we have obvious successes to celebrate, the challenges ahead are significant as you would have observed in detail over these two days. Nevertheless, from the quality of the deliberations, it is clear that solutions to our problems are well researched and have been well articulated.

We have discussed solutions relating to addressing Insecurity; Macroeconomic Stability; Agriculture and Food Security; Energy Security for Petroleum products and Electricity; Transportation and Critical Infrastructure; Industrialization and SME Development; Human Capital Development; Social Inclusion; Anti-Corruption; Housing Financing and Consumer Credit.

Public service is not easy work, and at times it can be thankless. I am therefore charging you all to see this opportunity to serve as an honour, to give your best to deliver on this mandate, for a more prosperous Nigeria, not for some, but for all Nigerians.

You will find that working collaboratively and purposefully will enable us to achieve quicker results, recognizing that four years is not a very long time. For the new Ministers, make sure you engage and benefit from the experience of the older Ministers and former Governors in the cabinet.

In terms of coordination, kindly ensure that all submissions for my attention or meeting requests be channeled through the Chief of Staff, while all Federal Executive Council matters be coordinated through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

I would like to thank the Office of the SGF for coordinating this successful Presidential Retreat. I would also like to thank the National Assembly leadership, the Party Chairman, Chairman of the Governors Forum, and resource firms, for the active engagements and contributions.

Once again, the challenges that lie ahead of us as a country are significant. But I have no doubt in your individual capacities and our collective patriotic commitment to deliver a better Nigeria for us, our children and a brighter future for all.

Crime / Nigerian Army, NSCDC Nab Oil Thieves In Bauchi, Rivers by Maniagist2: 5:27am On Aug 20, 2019
Men of the Nigerian Army have arrested suspected oil thieves in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State and impounded a tanker and other items used to siphon fuel from pipelines.

The arrest and seizure were made by troops of the 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi.

The Brigade Commander, Brig. Gen. Michael Durowaiye, disclosed this to journalists on Monday while handing over the tanker and other items used by the suspects to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at the 33 Artillery Brigade headquarters in Bauchi.

Durowaiye, who was represented by the Garrison Commander of the brigade, Colonel Gabriel Osho, said the suspected oil thieves, on sighting the army’s patrol vehicle, fled and abandoned the tanker and the items used for their bunkering activities.

He said the items recovered included a tanker, two generators, hand pump, pipe, drilling machine, welding machine, 26 welding electrode rods, one X Vanier calliper and three drilling rods.

We will continue to go after oil thieves and ensure that we arrest them to make sure that the state is devoid of such criminals,” the brigade commander stated.

Speaking while receiving the items and the suspects, the Commandant of the NSCDC in Bauchi, Halliru Alhassan, commended the troops for arresting the oil thieves.

He lamented that their activities were costing the country billions of naira and vowed to work closely with other security agencies and members of the public to ensure that oil thieves were arrested and prosecuted.

The commandant, who was represented by Daniel Taki, said the command would carry out further investigations to ensure that the suspects, still at large were arrested and brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the NSCDC has arrested 21 suspected oil thieves and a barge laden with stolen crude oil in Rivers State.

The agency also impounded two trucks conveying bags of illegally refined diesel and two buses laden with large quantities of diesel.

Parading the suspects at the agency’s headquarters in Port Harcourt on Monday, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Muktar Lawal, said 11 of the suspects were handed over to the agency by troops of the Nigerian Army attached to the Operation Delta Safe.

Lawal noted that the suspects would soon be charged once the agency concluded its investigation.

He said, “Today (Monday), we are parading 21 suspects, out of which 11 were handed over to us by the Operation Delta Safe and the Nigerian Army.

“We also have in custody a barge with six compartments, four of which were filled with suspected stolen crude oil. The barge is currently at the NSCDC jetty at Ogbogoro in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.”

Lawal told journalists that his men arrested two trucks laden with bags of illegally refined diesel hidden beneath bags of salt as well as two buses fully loaded with nylon bags of diesel.

He stated, “Two trucks were impounded with suspected adulterated AGO concealed beneath bags of salts, while two buses loaded with AGO were also seized.

The suspects are currently being interrogated and will be prosecuted.”

The state NSCDC boss vowed that the command would leave no stone unturned in its quest to protect the country’s critical assets and infrastructure, adding that the cooperation of sister security agencies as well as members of the public was invaluable.

Lawal added, “We’ll leave no stone unturned in ensuring the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure against vandalism.

We need the cooperation of the public and we will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure that the resources are protected from vandals as security is everyone’s business.”

Crime / 3 Students Arrested In Ondo School Of Health For Allegedly Rape Female Student by Maniagist2: 5:19am On Aug 20, 2019
The Ondo State Police Command, on Monday, said it had arrested three students of the School of Health Technology, Akure, for allegedly gang-raping a female student of the institution.

According to the police, the suspects are Damilola Aderoboye, Charles Eyitayo and Blessing Michael.

They were said to have committed the crime last week Wednesday at the residence of the victim’s boyfriend.

It was gathered that the case had been transferred to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of the command for investigation.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Femi Joseph, who disclosed this to our correspondent, said the command had begun investigation into the matter.

We have commenced investigation into the matter, and after the investigation, the suspect will be charged,” Joseph said.

A source narrated that the victim was gang-raped by the suspects in her boyfriend’s room on the Oda Road, which is not far from the campus of the institution.

The source said, “The victim went to visit her boyfriend in the evening of Wednesday, but she did not meet him at home; she met another man, who is a friend to her boyfriend.

So, she decided to wait for the boyfriend. Suddenly, three young men entered the room wieding dangerous weapons and asked the man they met inside to have sex with the lady, but he refused. It was after this that they gang-raped her.

Narrating her ordeal in the hands of the suspects, the victim said, “I was in the room when the three men forced their way in and pounced on me. I was shocked when they entered the room and they asked me to take off my dress and lay on the bed with my back.

I begged them to leave me alone, but they refused. They asked one of them to forcefully UnCloth me and before I knew what was happening, the three of them had raped me.

They threatened me that they had the recording of the action and would upload the footage on the social media if I told anyone about it.

But I could not keep the trauma to myself and I had to tell one of my friends, who reported the issue to the police and the boys were tracked and arrested.

I knew one of them, Eyitayo, who had once asked me out, but I rejected his advances. I have to speak out now because I cannot keep it to myself and I really want justice. Those boys took advantage of and abused me.”

The Provost of the school, Dr Felix Olawoye, condemned the alleged action of the male students and declared that they must face the full weight of the law.

The suspected student rapists have been arrested and as an institution, we believe that the law must take its rightful course after which the school’s disciplinary committee will also present its recommendations to the political head, the Commissioner for Health. We don’t tolerate any form of indiscipline,” he stated.

The police, on Wednesday, arraigned a soldier, Sunday Awolola, before an Ondo State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure for alleged rape.

Awolola, who was attached to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Akure, was alleged to have raped a student of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.

He was said to have committed the offence at a military checkpoint on the Ikare Akoko-Akungba Akoko Road on July 31, 2019.

The victim is said to be a 300-level student of the Department of Religious and African Studies at the AAUA.

Following the outcry that the incident generated, the army dismissed the randy soldier and handed him over to the state police command for prosecution.

The 33-year-old Awolola was arraigned on one count of rape on Wednesday.

According to the police prosecutor, Mr Adeoye Adesegun, the accused committed an offence contrary to Section 357 and punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The case could, however, not be heard as the defence counsel, Mr Kayode Idowu, opposed the application brought before the court by the prosecutor.

The police prosecutor had brought an application to remand the accused, but Idowu opposed it and asked the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study and respond to the application appropriately.

In his ruling, the magistrate, Mr Mayowa Olanipekun, adjourned the matter till Friday, August 16, 2019, to enable the defence counsel study the application.

The magistrate ordered that the accused be remanded in police custody till the adjourned date.

The representative of the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs, Mr Ogunleye Oluwaniyi, said he was in the court to represent the ministry, because the state government had interest in the case.

We are here to ensure that justice is served on the part of the accused as well as the victim. That is what the Ondo State Government is interested in,” Olaniyi explained.

Politics / Buhari Visits Idps, Says I’m Aware Of Your Sufferings by Maniagist2: 7:23am On Aug 15, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari said on Wednesday that he was aware of the hardship faced by Internally Displaced Persons in the country and was taking measures to address it.

He spoke in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State during a visit to 1,050 IDPs selected from the affected eight frontline local government areas of the state, bordering Ruga Forest.

The IDPs, who were sacked by bandits, were camped at the Basari Council Secretariat.

He said, “I am very sad that the consequences of these bandits’ actions have brought hardship and affected the socio-economic life of our people in the localities. Agriculture, which is the mainstay of the economy and source of livelihood, is worse affected.

I would like to assure you that the Federal Government is fully aware of your situation as I receive daily reports from security agencies and Governor Aminu Masari, who personally visited and briefed me on the killings and wanton destruction by the bandits not only in Katsina but in other states as well.

Let me assure all and sundry that the protection of lives and property of the citizenry is the prime essence of government. We shall be focused and determined to protect our citizens,” State House statement by Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, quoted him as saying.

He told the IDPs that measures taken so far included the deployment of military personnel and technology to contain the bandits.

One of our correspondents, who witnessed the visit, reported that Buhari told the IDPs that those who were engaging in kidnapping and maiming and were calling on God were not true Islamic faithful.

He declared, “It is either they don’t know God or they disagree with Him. What brought me here is to condole with you over the recent bandits’ attacks affecting not only you but all of us. I have nothing to add to what the Emir had already spoken extensively about, but all what leaders should do right from home is to ensure justice.

I assure you that we sleep and wake up with the sad moment of banditry and kidnapping activities in the state and country. By the grace of God, we will use soldiers, police and other security agencies to end banditry.

All those whose activity is to kill people and saying ‘Allahu Akbar’ are lying because God is not wicked. You can’t carry bomb or gun, sword or knife to go and kill innocent somebody and say ‘Allahu Akbar.’ This implies that you either don’t believe in God or you don’t know what you are saying.

However, he sought the support of the local communities and leaders for the security agencies to succeed fully.

There is a popular Hausa adage which says ‘it’s the rat in the house that tells the rat outside that there is fish in the house,’ so within yourselves, your neighbours and even your relatives there are informants.

So in this case, both you and I don’t know them, it’s only God that knows them. We can’t do anything here rather than intensify prayers for God to expose them.”

He thanked all those who had so far provided relief services to the IDPs, including his wife, Aisha, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal and Stanbic IBTC.

Masari had earlier said that the amnesty and offer of dialogue granted repentant bandits by the North-West governors, along with other strategies put in place, had started yielding good results.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State on Wednesday said he would not be deterred by insurgents’ intimidation and attacks in some resettled communities in the past weeks in the state.

Zulum, who spoke at the inauguration of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Agro-Ranger squad, said his administration remained committed to ending insurgency and restoring peace to the state.

Let me assure our people that the recent intimidations by insurgents at Gajiram; Gajiganna, Dalori, and Gubio will never deter us from our commitments to finding peace and stability in the state.

We will not be frightened, we will not fear any threat, it rather increases our commitment and resilience until we find peace.

During my inaugural address; I pledged my commitment towards upholding Section 14 (1b) of the constitution that categorically states that the security and welfare of the people are the primary purposes of government.

I am ready and ever committed to ensuring the fulfillment of that pledge,” he said.

Zulum said the state government would continue to collaborate with the military, police and other security agencies to protect lives and property.

The governor further renewed calls for insurgents to surrender for de-radicalisation and reintegration into society.

Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has threatened to come after Andy Ruiz Jr with a lawsuit if he refuses to fight in Saudi Arabia.

Ruiz who is expected to earn £7.5 million in the second fight, had said in an Instagram post that the rematch will hold in United States and on his own terms.

I know everybody’s talking about the fight and all but we got the real news coming soon,” said Ruiz on social media.

The fight is going to happen soon. I’m trying to give hope, give motivation to all my people. It’s going to be on my terms, our terms. We’re going to bring it back here in the United States. It’s like I said, I don’t have no protection over there (Saudi Arabia).

However reacting to claims made by the Mexican-American boxer, Eddie Hearn threatened to come after him with lawsuit which might leave him stripped of the championship titles won from Joshua on June 1 in New York.

The contract for the rematch was signed prior to the first fight,” Hearn told Sky Sports.

They were both signed at the same time. There is no other contract. We have to let (Andy and his team) know the time, date and venue which we have done. That’s it. They are contractually bound for the rematch. There are no conversations between the two teams about not doing the fight. I don’t perceive a problem.

He signed a contract with us that he was absolutely over the moon with. That gave him the opportunity of a lifetime. He will 100 per cent honour that contract. His choice is to have a legal battle that could put him out of boxing for years, or to defend his belts for a lot of money against a guy he has already beaten.

There isn’t any doubt he will take the fight. Any messing around and Ruiz Jr will lose belts, and he won’t want to do that. We expect the IBF, WBA and WBO belts to be on the line” he added.

Programming / 5 Nigerian Girls At 2019 Technovation World Pitch Summit Need Our Votes! by Maniagist2: 8:13am On Aug 14, 2019
Five young Nigerian girls have earned themselves a slot in the 2019 Technovation World Pitch Summit that is being held at Silicon Valley in California, U.S.A. after they emerged as finalists for creating an app to help finance an education for indigent children called “Handsout”.

The five kids whose ages range between ages 10 and 11 are: Pandora Onyedire, Ayomikun Ariyo, Ivana Mordi, Jadesola Kassim and Munachiso Chigbo of Standard Bearers School, Lekki phase 1, Lagos.

They already won the State, Regional & National Level for innovation with their App and are currently in Silicon Valley at the global finals.

There are already children benefiting from the App the girls have created and many more will.

Apart from the chance to win scholarships, the kids will also have opportunities to network, go on field trips and workshops and I can imagine they will even be the better for it.

Now the girls have gotten to the finale and they need our votes!!

Please lets support the @sbslekki #Brainsquad and their wonderful app “Handsout” .

They are the first on the list of candidates to be voted.

So, vote for them via: https://technovationchallenge.org/world-pitch/peoples-choice-award/#vote
