President Muhammadu Buhari has been called upon to intervene in the persisting factional crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State. Concerned stakeholders under the aegis of All Progressive Congress Interest group, Excellence Achievers Movement made the plea on Friday through its president, Solomon Deesi Lenu, in Port Harcourt. He lamented that the division of the APC in the state had hindered the party to play its rightful duty to constructively criticize the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Time has come for President Buhari to look into the crisis that has paralyzed Rivers chapter of the APC. This crisis is working against the collective interest of Rivers people. A state that twice produced Mr President’s campaign Director-General, Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi deserves to effectively play an opposition role in governance by providing alternative directions for the Nyesom Wike’s administration. Rivers people should benefit a great deal from the present government they voted into power, but the reverse is the case today because opposition APC in Rivers is in disarray and needs to be restored,” Lenu said. He said the desire of his group was to the APC become part of the solution to the deteriorating state of security, which appears to be too big for the current government to solve in Rivers. The party constitution provides for an internal mechanism for settlement of disputes and if that fails, the leaders and executives at national-level ought to prevail on the principal actors to ensure the party forges a common front to take its rightful place in serving its duties to the people of Rivers,Lenu added. The Grammy Award nominee who bared his mind during a TV interview on Thursday evening said it is a shame that an administration with Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu will lock somebody up when he’s the leader of the ruling APC. Seun who also revealed that he can never accept a political appointment from the current administration, added that knowing the history of NADECO and the role Tinubu played from 1993 till date, Sowore’s continued incarceration was a bit ‘harsh’ He said; It is a shame that an administration with Ashiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu will lock somebody up when he’s the leader of that party that is ruling, for saying Revolution Now, knowing the history of NADECO, the role that he played, and where we all came from, from 1993 till date, I think it was a bit harsh. Seun added: “The only thing I told Sowore was that he needed a bit more time to take people along. You can’t do revolution on the people’s behalf. You have to do your revolution with the people. His comments comes days after R&B singer turned politician, Banky W described the continued detention of Sowore, by the Department of State Security (DSS) as a clear infringement on basic human rights and a grave injustice. The musician, who was reacting to the ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja ordering the DSS to immediately release the pro-democracy activist on bail, said Nigeria has a way of constantly punishing innocent people. Commissioned by Expo 2020 Dubai, and conducted by YouGov, the Global Optimism Outlook Survey tracked people’s priorities for the future, looking at sustainability, economic growth, technology, travel, and more. More than 20,000 people across 23 countries were surveyed, broken down by geographic region, gender, employment, marital status, and income. Despite the breadth of diversity, it appears the majority of the world is closely aligned when it comes to the key issues facing the planet’s future. Unlocking future opportunity According to the results, 80 per cent of Nigerians believe knowledge gathering, learning and access to education would be effective at unlocking opportunity in the future, followed by access to resources (77 per cent), and collaboration across national borders and cultures (76 per cent). On nationwide economic development, 46 per cent and 45 per cent of respondents cited that access to education and knowledge is encouraging Nigeria’s growth. The survey also revealed that 96 per cent believe that greater collaboration and communication between individuals and communities can help in shaping a better future. Technology consistently appeared as having a role to play in future development and collaboration, with respondents saying they believe tech advancements will continue to build communities (96 per cent) and connect people globally (95 per cent). Seventy-four per cent said they would like to experience free trade for all, while 93 per cent said they were optimistic about the future of global trade. Seventy-one per cent said carbon-free travel and universal clean energy transportation, followed by sustainable infrastructure and architecture (68 per cent). Tech featured again, with 74 per cent, 61 per cent and 63 per cent saying they would like to experience high-tech solutions, cloud computing, big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and e-commerce respectively. Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai, said “In just over a year, Dubai and the UAE will be bringing the world together for the World Expo, in a spirit of collaboration, and creating an open global dialogue that allows us to look towards the future with renewed optimism.” We developed the Global Optimism Outlook Survey to help us understand what the citizens of the world believe will shape a better future. People from around the world have spoken, and we are listening. The results show that we are more connected than we may believe. That dialogue, communication and collaboration are essential, and that we are united in our desire to create a happier, more inclusive, cleaner planet. Policemen from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Anambra State Police Command have allegedly beaten up a 98-year-old woman, Cecilia Okpalaku of Achina in the Aguata Local Government Area of the state, over a family dispute. The policemen said they were looking for a document in my house but they ended up taking my granddaughter from me and assaulted me with an AK-47 riffle,” the nonagenarian told PUNCH Metro. It was gathered that the incident happened when the cops invaded the family home of one Emeka Okpalaku in Achina on the invitation of his estranged wife, Chiemerie Nzekwe, from the same local government area. Emeka, a Japan-based businessman, our correspondent learnt, was married to Esther from Uga some years back. While Emeka was in Japan, Esther and their daughter stayed back in Achina with the mother-in-law, Cecilia. A family source, who begged not to be named said, “Emeka was occasionally visiting home to see his wife and daughter. But trouble started when the husband visited home recently and observed certain strange things. It was Esther’s inability to explain some of these things that made Emeka to threaten to opt out of the marriage. Emeka, having sent his wife away, left their only daughter in the custody of his nonagenarian mother, Cecilia. His embattled wife stormed the husband’s place in Achina with some SARS operatives to forcefully take away their daughter.” It was alleged that the SARS operatives assaulted Cecilia in the process as she tried to stop them from taking away the child. The nonagenarian’s family has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, for his intervention in the matter. In the petition by its lawyer, Charles Asadu, the family decried the alleged assault on Cecilia by the police over a matrimonial issue. The petition read in part, “We have been briefed and our legal services have been retained by Messrs Josephine Anudu and Euphemia Ekwebele of Umuezeiyi village, Achina in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. Information reaching us is that armed police men with Ak-47 rifles and wearing black T-shirts with the inscription, F-SARS, in company with Mrs Chiemerie Okpalaku, invaded the premises of our client and physically assaulted their aged mother, Mrs Cecilia Okpalaku, 98. The reason behind the attack was that Mrs Chiemerie Okpalaku is an estranged wife of Emeka Okpalaku, son of the aged woman, who resides abroad and has been in marital problems. We gathered that it was the aftermath of the matrimonial faceoff that prompted Chiemerie and the officers to attack the aged woman. They ransacked the entire household, damaged the doors of the rooms and went away with so many household items belonging to our clients. In an effort to subdue our clients, the police used the butts of their AK-47 rifles on the aged woman, who according to our clients, is now admitted in one of the hospitals in Achina.” When contacted on the telephone, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident. Mohammed said the persons in dispute were not formally married, adding that the command had commenced investigation into the matter. He said, “The real fact of the issue is that the man confiscated the credentials of his fiancée in order to deny her the opportunity of reporting for the National Youth Service Corps orientation. The complainant’s lawyer sent in a petition to the Anambra State Police Command and the Commissioner of Police ordered a discreet investigation into the matter. However, as soon as the suspect sighted the police, he escaped through a window. The police then used the power of ingress to gain access into the house. President Muhammadu Buhari will embark on a state visit to South Africa as part of the efforts to put an end to incessant xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in that country. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, disclosed this wednesday in Abuja during an interaction with the media shortly after he was inaugurated. The minister who refused to reveal the date the president would be embarking on the trip, also stressed the need to establish a hotline between the two countries. Onyeama stated: “We have to have a hotline between ministers and the minister of South Africa. We have to be on hotline. So, if we feel that the South African government at the highest level needs to act, then we can get in touch with them. “But more specifically, as regards to south Africa, our president has accepted to go on a state visit to South Africa and the South African president, the former and the present one elevated our bi-national commission with south Africa from ministerial level to presidential level. So, what we are looking at is a special relationship between South Africa and Nigeria that can be also a game changer for African the same way the Franco-German alliance has been the engine of the European Union. We want to see a situation where that will be the case. South Africa, and Nigeria are driving Africa economically, and socially for the next 50 or so years and in that framework, we need to address the issue of security of Nigerians in South Africa at the very highest level. When the two presidents are engaged on this, I think all those below that have to do something or will be forced to do something. Onyeama noted that while there was a trust deficit between the Nigerian Union in South Africa and the South African police. He said it was important to get the two working together to address this issue The minister explained further that Citizen diplomacy would be a major priority in the next four years, while the ministry would equally continue to engage various countries to ensure repatriation of stolen funds. According to him, “for this, I will like to see us have a 24-hour help desk so that every Nigerian anywhere in the world will have a number that they can call whenever they are having any issues of any kind and that will be managed from a central point and transferred immediately to wherever we will be able to provide that solution. As a help-desk for every Nigerian anywhere in the world – if they have complaints, that it is going to be addressed at the highest possible level. Onyeama stated that the ministry would provide oversight over all Nigerian agencies around the world to ensure that they are providing the best services they can for Nigerians. In that context too, we have to look in particular the security of Nigerians in all the countries around the world. We are going to be a lot more aggressive and robust in engaging with countries to ensure that the human rights and security of Nigerians anywhere in the world is respected,” Onyeama assured. On the economy, he said that the federal government would develop what he called Nigeria Economy Development Initiative, adding that the ministry would play a key role in promoting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Nigeria, while also leveraging on the physical presence of the country in about 100 countries around to promote export for Nigerian businesses. A Federal High Court in Lagos has declined to order the release of SaharaReporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore and other persons in connection with the August 5, #RevolutionNow protest. Vacation judge, Justice Nicholas Oweibo, said he needed to first hear from the Federal Government, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). He ordered the DSS and IGP to appear before him on September 4 to show cause why Sowore and other protesters in detention should not be immediately released. The judge also ordered Lagos-based lawyer, Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje, who filed the ex-parte application seeking the detainees’ release, to put the IGP and DSS on notice. Ogungbeje, who said he participated in the #RevolutionNow protest but was not arrested, filed the application on behalf of himself and other participants. He prayed the court to declare as “unconstitutional and illegal police clampdown of the protesters and the arrest of Sowore by the DSS.” He also sought an order for the immediate and unconditional release of those arrested and detained. Joined as respondents in the application were the Federal Government, the DSS and the IG. Giving reasons why the arrested persons should be immediately and unconditionally released, Ogungbeje said, “There has been a grave constitutional infraction committed by the respondents against the applicant and other persons who engaged in the peaceful protest for good governance in Nigeria.” The lawyer said he was deprived of his constitutionally guaranteed right to peaceful assembly and association and the right to freedom of expression. On the 3rd of August, 2019, the convener of the protest, Mr Omoyele Sowore’s residence was forcefully invaded and put under siege; he was arrested, whisked away and detained in the detention facility of the 2nd respondent (DSS). Mr Omoyele Sowore has not committed any offence known to law to warrant the infringement and likely infringement of rights by the respondents. “By engaging in the peaceful protest, the applicant and other persons have not committed any offence known to law to warrant the treatment meted out to them by the respondents and their agents,” Ogungbeje said. He urged the court to order the immediate release of those arrested and detained. Read more here; https://maniagist.com/2019/08/21/update-court-refuses-to-release-sowore/
