Any idea why he or his son wanted the letter to remain sealed until today out of all days? Is it a special anniversary?
Foreign AffairsMasaryk’s “last Words” Envelope Opened: by ManirBK(op):
Previous thread https://www.nairaland.com/8521920/masaryks-letter-written-1937-finally

the weight of a political message.

“It is quite possible that others were present when this note was recorded — perhaps his daughter Alice, or even Edvard Beneš — because in some passages the document reads like a political message about how to treat the other peoples of multinational Czechoslovakia. There is, for example, a record about the Germans: they should stay with us. Masaryk said, ‘Give them what they deserve, but no more.’”

Preparing for death and legacy
The papers also revealed how deeply Masaryk thought about his death and funeral long before 1937.

Photo: Khalil Baalbaki, Czech Radio Photo: Khalil Baalbaki, Czech Radio
“Masaryk prepared for his own funeral for a very long time, already from the beginning of the 1930s, when it was being discussed where he would be buried. It was never clearly stated that it would be at Lány. What he wanted in any case was a simple grave with his family. At the same time, he was aware that even such an event would have great symbolic significance, which was confirmed in 1937.”

Another passage displayed Masaryk’s stark reflections on society and education:

“If people are uneducated and foolish, there is not much that can be done. People are glad to be foolish — do not make it easy for them, and argue with them.”

The journey of the envelope
The envelope itself traveled an extraordinary path. After Masaryk’s death, the papers were kept by his son Jan. They likely went with him to London during his diplomatic service, then back to Prague, and after his mysterious death in 1948 passed into the hands of his secretary Lumír Soukup. From there, the envelope journeyed into exile in Scotland and later France. After the fall of communism, Soukup’s family began returning Masaryk materials to Czechoslovakia.

In 2005, Antonín Sum, another of Jan Masaryk’s secretaries, deposited the envelope in the National Archives with a wish that it remained sealed until this week. The reason for this remains to be explained. It will now be a subject of a profound restoration and careful sytematic research In the Czech National Archives. The offical results shoud be published in about a month

CrimeBandits Force Ransom Bearer To Drink Boiled Indian Hemp by ManirBK(op): 6:07pm On Aug 28, 2025
Bandits have ordered a ransom bearer to drink boiled Indian hemp at their hideout in the Katambi forest, near the Azara community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A resident of Azara, Saleh Buba, said the incident happened on Tuesday after the ransom bearer, whom he identified as Ayuba Musa, delivered a N2 million ransom along with other items to the bandits.

The money and items were meant to secure the release of five women who were abducted from a farm in the area.

He said that after intense negotiations with the victims’ families, the abductors agreed on the N2 million ransom, which also included two bags of rice, 25 liters of palm oil, a carton of cough syrup, and Indian hemp.

According to him, Ayuba took all the requested items, including the N2 million, to the bandits at the designated location.

It was there, he said, that the bandits boiled a portion of the Indian hemp and ordered him to drink it.

After the bandits collected all the items they had demanded, they took the Indian hemp and boiled it for him to drink,” Buba said.

According to them, the ransom bearer might have poisoned the hemp, which is why they asked him to test it.”

However, after collecting the items, the bandits ordered Ayuba to return to the victims’ families and demand an additional N500,000 before the women would be released.

A community leader from the area also confirmed the incident to our reporter by telephone on Wednesday, stating that the bandits are still holding the five abducted women despite collecting the N2 million ransom and other items.

“It was around 6:34 pm on Tuesday when one of the victims’ relatives came to inform me that the man who took the ransom to the bandits was asked to go back and raise another N500,000 before the women would be set free,” he said.

PoliticsRemi Tinubu Donates ₦1 Billion To Victims Of Benue Attacks by ManirBK(op): 9:37am On Jul 30, 2025
First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday donated N1 billion to victims of armed invaders attack in Yelwata community of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

Our correspondent reports that over 100 people were reportedly killed in the night of June 13 and early hours of June 14, 2025 in the rural Yelwata community, prompting the First Lady’s donation to help survivors rebuild their lives.

Mrs Tinubu who made the donation during a condolence visit to the state, held at the New Banquet Hall of the Government House, Makurdi, also pledged support from the Renewed Hope Initiative to address cross-border attacks and ensure affected children return to school.

Earlier, the First Lady was received at the Tactical Air Command, Nigerian Air Force Base, Makurdi, around 10:45am by Governor Hyacinth Alia and other top government officials.

Speaking at the event, the paramount ruler of Tiv nation worldwide, Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse, decried the continued attacks on Benue communities, describing them as a “genocidal war.”

Ayatse accused Nasarawa State of serving as a base for the assailants and called for urgent action.
In his remarks, Governor Alia lamented the humanitarian crisis resulting from the attacks and renewed calls for the establishment of state police to allow for quicker response to security threats.

The governor also urged the federal government to adopt ranching as a national policy to curb farmer-herder conflicts.

Responding, Mrs Tinubu promised to work with the wife of the Nasarawa State Governor to find solutions to the recurring cross-border crisis.

She announced that her Renewed Hope Initiative would support displaced children’s education and community recovery efforts.

The president’s wife later presented the N1 billion cheque to Governor Alia and state officials in a brief handover ceremony before meeting with stakeholders.

CrimeRe: IPOB Hideout Dismantled As Police Arrest 2,785 Crime Suspects by ManirBK(op): 6:40pm On Jul 20, 2025

CrimeIPOB Hideout Dismantled As Police Arrest 2,785 Crime Suspects by ManirBK(op): 6:39pm On Jul 20, 2025
The police in Imo State say they have
arrested 2,785 individuals for allegedly
committing various criminal offences in
the state.
The police spokesperson in the state,
Henry Okoye, in a statement on
Saturday said the suspects were
arrested in multiple operations
conducted in the past six months in the
state.
Mr Okoye, a deputy superintendent of
police, said the offences included
kidnapping, terrorism, murder, armed
robbery, cultism, and child trafficking.
“These operations also resulted in the
rescue of 58 kidnapped victims and 42
stolen children, many of whom have
been joyfully reunited with their
families,” he said.
Dismantling of IPOB hideout
Mr Okoye said police operatives, in one
of the operations, dismantled a camp
belonging to suspected members of the
outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra
(IPOB) and its armed militant wing,
Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The spokesperson said police operatives
dismantled the IPOB camp at Njaba, a
local government area in Imo State,
when they raided it.
He said some notorious and wanted
IPOB/ESN members were arrested
during the operation.

Mr Okoye identified some of the
arrested IPOB members as Amechi
Onyebuchi, 38, Ozioma Ihedoro, 39,
Cyprian Ikegbunam, 50, and Uchenna
Opara, 30.
“These individuals were responsible for
multiple attacks on security formations
and public infrastructure in Njaba LGA.
“During interrogation, they confessed to
the kidnap and murder of Emmanuel
Oguzie, allegedly on the orders of a
wanted ESN commander known as
Asari,” he said.
“All the suspects will be arraigned in
court upon completion of
investigation.”
Several arms and ammunition,
including explosives, were recovered
from the suspects, according to the
police.
Some of the items recovered included
two GPMGs, 14 pieces of AK-47, 20
pump-action guns, four fabricated
rocket launchers, seven gas-cylinder
explosives, locally made hand grenades,
Biafran flags, and charms.
Arrest of suspected kidnappers
Mr Okoye said, in another operation,
police operatives arrested two
suspected kidnappers: Uche
Nwachukwu, 24, and Chinonso Ozirim,
32.
The spokesperson said the arrested
suspects- believed to be members of a
syndicate- allegedly kidnapped a
resident, Anayo Iwuoha, on 20 June in
his compound at Akabo, a community
in Ikeduru Local Government Area of
Imo State.
“The syndicate held the victim at
Chinonso Ozirim’s residence, collecting
a N2.2 million ransom before a joint
operation by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit
and local vigilantes led to his rescue
and the arrest of the suspects,” he said.
“A manhunt is ongoing for their fleeing
accomplices.”
Arrest of cultist
Mr Okoye said, in a separate operation,
police operatives arrested a suspected
cultist, Chinazaekpere Ogbonna, 36,
who hails from Orlu, another local
government area of the state.
The police spokesperson said Mr
Ogbonna is a suspected member of
Vikings Confraternity and had been on
the run for two years after the brutal
murder of a man simply named “Pikin.”
He said Mr Ogbonna and three of his
unnamed gang members allegedly
“butchered Pikin” whom they
“mistakenly identified” as a rival cultist.
“He (Ogbonna) was recently
apprehended by operatives of Orlu
Division for burglary and stealing, but
upon further profiling and transfer to
the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, he was
identified as one of the cultists involved
in the heinous murder,” Mr Okoye said.
Increased attacks
Like other states in Nigeria’s south-east,
security has deteriorated in Imo State
with frequent attacks by armed
persons.
kidnappers, cultists and even armed
robbers are believed to be partly
responsible for the growing insecurity
in the region.
Also, separatist groups like IPOB have
been linked to some deadly attacks in
the region.
The IPOB-linked attacks often target
security agencies, government officials
and facilities.
But the group has repeatedly denied its
involvement in the attacks.
Hundreds of persons have been killed
or abducted and several others injured
in some of such attacks in the region.
IPOB is a group leading agitation for an
independent state of Biafra, which it
wants carved out from the south-east
and some parts of south-south Nigeria.

PoliticsAnother PDP Senator Resigns From Party by ManirBK(op): 9:16am On Jul 20, 2025
The senator representing Osun Central,
Olubiyi Fadeyi, has resigned from the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing
unresolved internal crises and the
inability of the party to offer coherent
leadership at the national level.
Mr Fadeyi’s resignation, conveyed in a
letter dated 12 June and addressed to
the chairman of the PDP in Ward 3,
Oke-Ejigbo, Ila-Orangun, came barely
hours after a similar announcement by
the senator for Osun East, Francis
Fadahunsi.
The resignation letter pointed to deep-
rooted divisions, court battles, and
ineffective structures that have
hindered governance and effective
representation.
“I wish to formally notify you that I am
resigning my membership of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with
immediate effect,” the letter said.

Mr Fadeyi noted that the decision
followed extensive consultations with
political associates, family members,
and close advisers.
With his resignation, the PDP continues
to lose ground in Osun State, despite
holding the governorship under
Governor Ademola Adeleke. Mr.
Fadeyi’s departure also reinforces
growing speculations of a mass exodus
from the party ahead of the 2027
general elections, particularly in the
South-west. There are also speculations
that Governor Adeleke will soon defect
to the APC.
The PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition
party, has remained engulfed in
leadership tussles since the conclusion
of the 2023 general elections, with
multiple court cases and factional
disputes weakening its national
cohesion. These internal frictions have
triggered a wave of defections and
political realignments in the Senate and
across state legislatures.
Following these back-to-back
resignations, the PDP now has 28 seats
in the 109-member Senate, while the
APC maintains a clear majority with 69
seats.
The Labour Party (LP) now has four
seats, while the Social Democratic Party
(SDP) has two seats. The New Nigeria
Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All
Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)
hold one seat each.

Foreign AffairsIsraeli Strike On Gaza’s Only Catholic Church Kills Two by ManirBK(op): 5:34pm On Jul 17, 2025
An Israeli strike on Gaza’s only Catholic church killed two people on Thursday, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said, as Israel said it “never targets” religious sites and regretted any harm to civilians.

Pope Leo XIV said he was “deeply saddened” by the attack, which came as Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that Israeli strikes across the Palestinian territory killed at least 20 people.

With deep sorrow the Latin Patriarchate can now confirm that two persons were killed as a result of an apparent strike by the Israeli army that hit the Holy Family Compound this morning.

“We pray for the rest of their souls and for the end of this barbaric war. Nothing can justify the targeting of innocent civilians
,” it said in a statement.

Gaza civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said “two citizens from the Christian community” were killed in an Israeli strike on the church in Gaza City, with which the late Pope Francis kept regular contact through the war.

AFP photographs showed the wounded being treated in a tented area at Gaza City’s Al-Ahli Hospital, also known as the Baptist Hospital, with parish priest Father Gabriel Romanelli with a bandage around his lower leg.

The patriarchate, which has jurisdiction for Catholics in Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Jordan and Cyprus, condemned the strike and said it “destroyed large parts of the complex”.

“Targeting a holy site currently sheltering approximately 600 displaced persons, the majority of whom are children and 54 with special needs, is a flagrant violation of human dignity and a blatant violation of the sanctity of life and the sanctity of religious sitses, which are supposed to provide a safe haven in times of war,” it said.

Israel expressed “deep sorrow” over the damage and civilian casualties, adding that the military was investigating.

“Israel never targets churches or religious sites and regrets any harm to a religious site or to uninvolved civilians,” the foreign ministry said on X.
